At Primary 3, Alycia has not been taught how to write English composition or Karangan yet. Perhaps her school teachers will start them off in the last school term. To give her the heads-up so that it will be easier for her when the time comes, I told her to start writing her own composition based on her past and recent traveling and outing experiences. To make it less classroom style and boring for her, I told her that she could use the laptop and iPad to type out her composition and karangan. That would also be easier for me to correct her mistakes and for her to see where her mistakes are, using Word’s track changes function. Also, she could use the spell check and Thesaurus function in Word. That suggestion was certainly a good carrot for my little bunny! She was very pleased with the idea and was very excited to start drafting her first composition, which was about her recent trip to Port Dickson. Her second assignment from me was a karangan (composition in the Malay language) on her first fishing experience with daddy.
With a smattering knowledge in using Microsoft Word, my 8.5YO girl began typing her very first composition. Not bad for a first timer, with lots of room for improvement.

A good start….well done!!
Great idea with using the Microsoft Word to type out the composition.
Great work, Alicia!
Thanks for sharing, Mama. Does she need to find the keys to type, haha….T1 does and she keeps asking me how I can type so fast.
I didn’t realise that Primary 3 in Chinese Schools have not begun composition writing. What about Sekolah Kebangsaan? Is it the individual schools or the national syllabus?
mamapumpkin… Aly’s quite OK with the keyboard as she uses the iPad and laptop to play games and read very often. I’m not very sure about the SRK syllabus too. But I remember I did not do composition and karangan until Std 4. Can’t really remember haha.
This is a good idea!
Thanks for the idea. It is indeed a very good way to motivate Alycia to compose her first essay/karangan. I like it a lot.
Well done Alycia. It’s hi-tech way to write essay like this, but need to save time to time, else one button and the file gone missing or deleted then she need to redo from beginning again 🙂
I still prefer the old good traditional way – write it down on a booklet. Alycia will get the hang of it. My girl just started composing stories and she loves it. Lots of weird and funny stories from her ..
