They say that the forbidden apple always taste real good. I think it’s so true. I rarely allow my kids to eat instant noodles and even if I were to cook instant noodles, it would be without the seasoning powder and oil. I would normally fry the noodles with lots of veggie, eggs and meat.  Each time Alycia and Sherilyn see kakak eating maggie mee (they call instant noodles ‘maggie mee’), they would stand next to her with eyes fixated at her bowl of curry maggie mee, swallowing their saliva and discreetly plead with kakak to let them have a spoonful or two. My maid would give in to their requests though I’ve told her repeatedly never to feed them with food from the plate that she’s eating. After satisfying her desire, Alycia would tell me out of guilt that kakak had given her a spoonful of maggie mee. Sometimes she would keep it from me but I would find out eventually when I see a strand or two of noodles at the corner of their mouth.
Several days ago, I finally cooked them maggie mee for lunch… but I only used a quarter sachet of the seasoning and oil. Daddy had bought a few packets of MSG-free instant noodles imported from Korea for himself.
I threw in lots of cabbage so that the soup will be sweet even without the complete sachet of seasoning. Also fried them each an egg for extra protein.Â
My gals’ bowl of instant noodles with fried eggs and watercress chicken soup.
The verdict?
Alycia is fool-proof. She put on a disappointing look and said “mummy, how come this is not kakak’s maggie mee? Why don’t taste like kakak’s maggie mee? I don’t like”.
Sherilyn happily whacked the whole bowl of noodles, together with all the cabbage and gladly asked Alycia to pass over the noodles to her!
Do you allow your kids to eat instant noodles (with the seasoning) ?

I haven’t tried leh. I use the “maggi mee” without fried and seasoning type only with own soup or fry.
I think maybe it’s ok, once in a while, if they are willing to eat. Maybe I always buy tomyam flavor, so they never have chance to try.
My kid never eat maggie mee before, may be I should let him try, once in a while its fine. 🙂
Actually, I would but not on a regular basis. I ate them (a lot) as a kid cos I was always hungry by tea time and my Mum was not the sort that kept snacks like biscuits at home. So I would get a bowl of Maggie Mee and drink up every ml of the soup (with the entire packet of oil and seasoning! Sometimes I even ask for reduced water so that the soup will be more “keng”). I’m still alive and kicking (albeit with a little less hair possibly). So I think the trick is not to make it the forbidden apple. As Taoism has it, “Follow the golden mean”.
Wah didn’t know my comment so long. Shows you how passionate I am about my Maggie Mee! LOL
I haven’t let ashley tried maggi mee before. i think she would like it 🙂
So far Sharlene takes her maggi mee without the seasoning and oil. We normally cook it with ikan bilis soup or other soup base.
hmmm.. i think i let my lil missy tried maggi mee a few times before, they are not eating it everyday wat, should be ok kua? all food is to be taken moderately mah rite? 🙂
I only allow my children to eat the noodle with my natural seasoning. You can use boiled chicken stock or ikan bilis stock.
The maggie mee seasoning got MSG which is not good for children.
I think, to have maggie mee once in a while is alright. I am maggie mee person too. But I tried not to put too much seasoning every time too.
Y’know what I normally make? I make a stock out of chicken bones, heaps of garlic pips, 2 inch ginger and black peppercorns. Boil for 2-3 hours. Store in fridge.
When I make the ‘maggi mee’ (I normally buy one big bag of plain maggi mee noodles). I use this stock, add some fried shallots..and a wee bit of salt, carrots n whatever vege available.
I tell you, it tastes just the same. I swear! It’s the garlic and peppercorns that bring out the stock flavour! hahahahahahahah
Oh..I posted the recipe here.
Mott…. I shall try it! Thanks!
Maybe someday I would for sure but now he is abt to be 2, way too early for instant noodles, boy!
me too a maggie mee person, sometime when i m lazy to go out to buy lunch or dinner… hungry at nite, instant noodles was my best fren .. i have many kinds of IN in my kitchen, from spicy to not spicy, mihun, kiew tiew and mee … hahhaha…
I do let my kid eat IN too.. but not always … once in a blue moon, sometime i will take out the noodles and wash with plain hot water … leave a lil taste on the noodles it self …. hihihi
I’m afraid I also let the kids take it. Its too simple to prepare mah. I’m a bad mommy. Boo Hoo!
Once in a while is ok, esp when they see adults taking instant noodles. The more you refrain them, the more they want to try.
No chance to try it out yet with Ryan but I loves maggie mee myself. Literally grow up with it. Hehe
once a while ok, but i will always replace the seasoning with ikan bilis powder or chicken broth…
philip also likes noodles…
My kids have tried the maggie mee b4 and they like it. Sometime I use the Vits mee and add the soup boiled by my mum.
I’ve tried this Korean instant mee. Nice . They got a few different flavour. I saw at Jusco. Quite nice. but i feel thgh they claim no MSG but the seasoning can be pretty salty , too.
I always add lots of green vege & one egg for my kids, too. Healthier!
wow dats a big bowl of noodle! can they finish it? i will let them take instant noodle but i dun put the seasoning. i will do my own, not as nice but healthier
i also a “maggie mee” person. Most weekend i will eat instant noodles as lunch. Mostly i will take korean instant noodles. I did let my boys tried, while i’m having maggie mee for lunch. Few spoons i think still ok kua. Cruz always love it, when he see me eat mee, he will tell me he also want mee, but not Fearles.
eat…………….. hantam la. semua hantam. hahahhaa
