Sherilyn’s Grueling Schedule: Balancing Back-to-Back College Assignments

Sherilyn is in the final stretch of her 1-year Foundation in Natural & Built Environments course, with plans to begin her degree studies in September. As the end of the foundation year approaches, the workload has become increasingly intense, leaving her with little to no time for herself. The relentless projects and assignments have taken a toll on her sleep, leaving her exhausted and overwhelmed. On top of her studies, she is very much involved in dancing, rehearsals, and video shooting. Dancing is her first love and will always be.

The demands of the foundation course have been relentless. Sherilyn has been working tirelessly on back-to-back assignments, barely catching a moment to rest. The past two weeks have been particularly challenging, with little to no sleep as she races against deadlines. A few nights ago, she was still at college at 3:30 a.m., working on a project with her course mates. Despite my worries, I knew she was dedicated to completing her work. Whenever she or Alycia are not back home yet, I won’t be able to sleep well too. So I am also battling sleep deprivation.

After submitting one assignment (drawing of floor plans and site layout), another challenging project awaited Sherilyn. This time, her task involved creating something out of a big bunch of matches, air-dry clay, red papers, fire lighters and sharp cutting tools. For two days, our apartment was transformed into a makeshift workshop, filled with the smell of smoke and ashes from burning matches and papers. The air was thick with fumes, and our air purifier was working overtime to clear the air, with numbers in air quality rising to three digits. As someone with OCD, the mess and chaos drove me to my limits, and I found myself nagging non-stop and yet helping Sherilyn clean up the aftermath despite dealing with a painful right tennis elbow and a post-surgery left foot.

While I was frustrated with the mess and the strain it placed on my own health, I understood the pressure Sherilyn was under. I am still asking her if an architectural course is truly her passion, given the relentless workload and sacrifices it demands.

After pulling two all-nighters, Sherilyn is finally submitting her assignment in college today. I hope she can get some much-needed rest and sleep before the next round of assignments begins. It’s been a grueling journey, but her hard work and perseverance are commendable. As her mother, I am incredibly proud of her dedication and resilience, even if it means enduring sleepless nights and a chaotic home environment.

As Sherilyn prepares to transition from her foundation year to her degree studies, I hope she finds a better balance between her academic responsibilities and personal well-being. The road ahead in an architectural course will undoubtedly be challenging, but I believe in her ability to navigate it with the same determination and strength she has shown so far. Even if she decided to drop architectural and pursue another degree course after the Foundation course, I will support her decision.

Here’s to hoping for more organized projects and less smoke-filled rooms, messy dining table, and dirty floors in our house in the future!

Super messy dining table.

Burnt match sticks on the left and match sticks sprayed with black paint on the right. The ensemble, along with burnt red papers is supposed to create some kind of aesthetic design, I guess.

Burnt match sticks, which looked like some mushrooms.

Now I know why many students gave up the architectural course mid way as it’s not easy. I don’t think it’s easy.

Why Consuming Too Many Refined Foods is Bad for Us

We all love burgers and sausages and takeaways, but eating large amounts of refined and processed foods can negatively impact our health in several ways. Here are 5 key reasons why we should be mindful of overdoing refined foods.

1. Nutrient Deficiency

Overly refined foods like white bread and white rice have had the nutritious bran and germ removed during processing. This leaves only the starchy endosperm, stripped of beneficial fibre, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds.

Eating too many refined grains can lead to deficiencies in iron, magnesium, zinc, folate and other essential micronutrients over time. This is especially true if refined grains make up the bulk of your carbohydrate intake, rather than whole grains. Choosing whole grain versions like whole wheat bread and brown rice provides more complete nutrition.

2. Blood Sugar Spikes

When refined grains are consumed, they are quickly broken down into sugar during digestion. This leads to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Foods high in sugar like sweets, soda and juice have a similar effect.

Over the long run, frequent blood sugar spikes can increase your risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. The fibre in whole grains causes their carbohydrates to be digested more slowly, for a gentler impact on blood sugar.

3. Inflammation

Refined oils like soybean, corn, sunflower and canola oils are often used in processed foods. These oils are high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. Excessive omega-6 intake promotes bodily inflammation, which has been linked to chronic diseases.

Additionally, the refining process strips away antioxidants like vitamin E that can combat inflammation. Eating too many refined foods means you’ll miss out on antioxidants from whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

4. Gut Health Imbalance

The lack of fibre in refined foods can alter the balance of gut bacteria, promote intestinal inflammation, and contribute to constipation. This disrupts our digestive health.

It can also allow candida, a fungus that lives in the gut, to thrive. Candida feeds on sugar and can cause an overgrowth if too much refined sugar is consumed. A candida overgrowth leads to candida symptoms like bloating, cramping and diarrhoea.

Take a candida test if you think this might be a problem for you.

Prebiotic fibres from whole plant foods support a diversity of beneficial gut bacteria. This improves gut balance and intestinal health.

5. Other Health Issues

There are additional concerning health effects tied to overeating refined foods such as:

  • Increased risk for heart disease due to the trans fats and low omega-3s in many processed foods
  • Higher cholesterol levels as a result of refined carbohydrates and damaged fats
  • Possible decreased cognitive function and dementia resulting from nutrient deficiencies
  • Greater chance of depression and anxiety due to blood sugar fluctuations and inflammation
  • Higher likelihood of acne and skin conditions because of high glycemic diets and food sensitivities
  • Greater exposure to food additives, emulsifiers and preservatives that may impact health

Limiting refined foods as part of an overall balanced, nutritious diet can go a long way in supporting our health and preventing chronic disease.

The One House Chore My Hubby Loves

My hubby is not the type who readily engages in household chores. With his demanding work schedule, his evenings are often reserved for unwinding by watching videos on his phone. However, there is one chore he secretly loves: ironing clothes. Despite his busy and tiring days, he dedicates at least half an hour to an hour each week to this task, ironing his clothes and our daughters’ clothes without complaint.

It’s quite endearing to see my hubby who is a neat-freak meticulously ironing each piece of clothing. He doesn’t mind doing it and takes pride in the result. Fortunately for him, I prefer buying wrinkle-free clothes, so he doesn’t have to iron my clothes as much. But even when I do leave a few pieces on the ironing rack, he will still iron them for me, showing his affection through this small yet significant gesture.

Last year, he made a surprising purchase that further revealed his secret love for ironing.  After dinner at Bangsar Shopping Centre, he wandered into a luxury home living products shop that specializes in ironing boards, pedal dustbins, bathroom and kitchen assortment. None of us anticipated that he would buy something so extravagant, especially from a household products boutique. But to our amazement, he emerged from the shop holding a jumbo-sized Brabantia ironing board under his armpit that cost  RM400! This luxurious ironing board has become his pride and joy. With its spacious surface and sturdy build, it has made ironing an even more enjoyable experience for him.

In a way, ironing has become his little escape. It’s a task that allows him to focus and unwind. I think that to him, there’s something meditative about smoothing out the wrinkles, transforming crumpled fabric into perfectly pressed garments. He might not admit it outright, but I can see that he genuinely enjoys this chore 😆. His face lights up with a sense of accomplishment after he’s done, and there’s a certain satisfaction in his eyes as he hangs up the freshly ironed clothes.

While my hubby might never admit it, I know that ironing brings him a sense of satisfaction and peace. And I couldn’t be more grateful for the small but significant way he contributes to our home.

Jumbo sized Brabantia ironing board. I still don’t know how to operate it. According to Alycia, there’s a button somewhere to open and close the board.

The hole where the viral wart used to be is healing well 🙏. Bleeding is minimal and there’s not much pain when I walk given that I am still tip-toeing on my left foot. I am hopeful that I can start to exercise again with brisk walking by next week.

Lunch and dinner for everyone today ~ air-fried ribeye steak, steamed egg, pumpkin and veggies. Cass added Mizuna salad to her bowl.

Hubby bought 6 thick slabs of ribeye steak and we still have 2.5 pieces left. The girls are very happy that they get to eat steak three days straight.

I just discovered that air-fried steak tastes as good as pan-fried ones and it’s so much easier with air-frying. There’s no oil splatter and washing is minimal.

Method: marinate steak with Lea & Perrins sauce, soy sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, McCormick Season All Seasoned Salt (optional). NO oil is needed for frying.

For well done steak, air-fry for 10 minutes at 190C. Turn off power. Let sit in the air-fryer for 5 minutes before serving. No flipping to the other side is needed.

For medium rare, air-fry for 8 minutes at 190C. Turn off power. Let sit for 5 minutes. No flipping to the other side is needed.

In the afternoon, hubby surprised us with a box of pastries from Dou Dou Bake . 💞

Cinnamon bun, chewy chocolate chunk sea salt cookie, rose pistachio escargot and almond croissant.

My Experience with Laser Surgery for a Viral Wart

On Thursday, 11 July 2024, I underwent a laser surgery to remove a stubborn viral wart on my left foot. The procedure took place in the Procedure Room of the consultation suite at Sunway Medical Centre. The procedure started at 12 noon sharp, and by 12:15 p.m., it was all over. It was an outpatient procedure.

The dermatologist instructed me to lie on my right side so she could easily access my left foot. Before administering the two Local Anesthetic (LA) injections, she sprayed a numbing spray on the site. The spray was freezing cold, making my foot almost numb. She quickly followed with the LA jabs. The first jab was excruciatingly painful, and I cringed in agony. The second jab, though still painful, was slightly more bearable. Both jabs lasted for about 6-7 seconds. After the LA jabs were administered, the doctor reassured me that the worst part was over.

The Laser Procedure

After ensuring that I couldn’t feel any pain on the wart site, the doctor began the laser procedure. She explained each step as she worked. I felt no pain during the laser treatment, only a tugging sensation on my foot. The room was filled with the smell of burning, which was the carbon dioxide (CO2) from the laser and my burnt skin and flesh. I could see bits of white debris flying, which I assumed was my skin. I also heard the sound of a vacuum cleaner, likely a suction machine to suck away the burnt skin debris. I stayed still and avoided moving my body to look at what the doctor was doing.

At 12:15 p.m., the doctor announced that the procedure was over. She mentioned that I might feel pain after two hours, but thankfully, I experienced no post-surgery pain. My foot was bandaged, and I was instructed to keep it dry for two days. If it got wet, I was to apply Murozin ointment on the wound and re-bandage it.

The cost of the laser surgery cost RM750. After adding up the consultation charges last week and post-surgery consultation in two weeks’ time, the total cost would be around RM1,500. I hope my insurance will approve this claim.

Post-Surgery Care

Despite three layers of protection—a cotton crepe bandage, a layer of plastic food cling wrap, and a plastic bag covering my foot—the outside of the plaster was still slightly damp after my shower. However, the plaster is water-resistant, so my wound was still dry. Showering without wetting my left foot was quite a challenge. I sat on a backless, armless chair, trying to keep my left leg up at a 90-degree angle by resting on the wall. After my shower, I changed the plaster and bandage and finally saw my wound. There was a large hole where the wart had been, with some blood oozing out 😮. It was a gory sight, but I had to dress the wound myself. Thankfully, Sherilyn was there to help me with the flimsy op-site plaster.

I thought hard about whether I should post a photo of my lasered foot and I think I shouldn’t, not at the moment. It can be too creepy and disturbing to some.

The next day, I improved my showering technique. I used a non-slip rubber plastic chair with arms and back support, hanging my left leg on the armrest. This time, the bandage stayed quite dry, though I changed it anyway due to some slight blood stains. Although the doctor advised keeping the wound dry for two days, I plan to keep it dry for longer. The hole looks deep and scary, and I can’t risk getting it infected.

After two days of showering with my left leg up at almost 90 degrees and walking on my toes to avoid putting pressure on the wound on the side of the heel, I now have an achy leg.

Conclusion

The laser surgery to remove my viral wart was a brief but intense experience. The pain from the LA jabs was significant, but the actual laser procedure was painless. The post-surgery care has been a challenge, but I am managing with careful bandaging. I hope for a smooth recovery, free from infection, and that new flesh and skin will grow back to cover the hole in my foot. This journey has been tough, but I am optimistic about the healing process and look forward to walking pain-free again.

Photo on the right – pre surgery. The wart looks unsuspicious but it caused me a lot of pain when I walked or applied pressure on it. Viral warts take a very long time to go away on its own, it could take years. But when waiting isn’t an option and over-the-counter treatments failed, like in my case, it’s best to consult a dermatologist.

This will be my footwear fashion for the next one week.

This non-slip chair with arm-rest and back-rest is a life-savior for post-surgery patients when they want to keep certain parts of their body dry. Hubby bought this chair for his mum to sit on during shower after her cataract surgeries two years ago.

10 July 2024 ~ Update on the Viral Wart on My Left Foot

The past few days have been a whirlwind of trying desperately to get my insurance to approve the laser procedure to remove the viral wart on my left foot. After several phone calls to my insurance agent and dermatologist, I have to accept that my insurance will most likely NOT cover this procedure. However, my insurance agent advised me to submit my claim, and I hope that it will be approved by the insurance as the wart removal by laser is not for aesthetic purposes.

The Insurance Battle

Navigating through insurance claims has been a daunting task. Despite the clear need for the procedure due to the pain and difficulty walking, my insurance company is reluctant to approve it. I spent hours explaining my situation to my insurance agent, hoping for some understanding and flexibility. My dermatologist has also provided detailed reports and an appeal letter to support my case, but the outcome remains uncertain.

Mentally Preparing for the Procedure

As someone with a low pain threshold, the thought of the laser procedure is quite intimidating. The idea of enduring several Local Anesthetic jabs and laser zaps fills me with anxiety. However, I am mentally ready to take on the pain. The 4 months of pain that I was in with every step I took is nothing compared to just 15-20 minutes of pain tomorrow. I have gone through 5 major abdomen surgeries in my life and I know I will survive tomorrow.

Finding Strength in Perspective

Over the past four months, every step I took was a reminder of the persistent pain from the wart. Walking became a challenge, and everyday activities were marred by discomfort. I have not exercised for more than a month ever since the wart started to hurt badly when pressured is applied on the foot. Comparing this prolonged agony to the brief pain of the procedure puts things into perspective. Enduring a few minutes of discomfort for long-term relief is a small price to pay, though I will have to be prepared to pay between RM1k – 2k out of my pocket for this procedure at Sunway Medical Centre.

The Anticipation of Being Pain-Free

The thought of walking without pain is incredibly motivating. The past few months have been difficult, but the promise of relief is within reach. I am looking forward to regaining my mobility and enjoying activities that I had to forgo due to the pain. The anticipation of being pain-free keeps me strong and determined.

Conclusion

Tomorrow is the day of the procedure, and while I am nervous, I am also hopeful. The journey to this point has been filled with challenges, from dealing with insurance to managing pain. However, I am ready to face the final hurdle. Please pray for me as I undergo the laser procedure. Your support means the world to me, and I hope to come out of this stronger and pain-free.

This photo popped up on my Google Photos a few days ago. Taken exactly 12 year ago, Sherilyn was 7 and Cass was 4. They were my models for my online store (for 10 years) where I sold clothes and kids stuff. I do miss them a lot at this age. Still like babies, they were way more obedient, cute, talkative and told me everything. It’s quite the opposite now 🥹

The Journey Behind the Gold

Cass’ recent achievement at the recent Skate Malaysia 2024 is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and perseverance. Winning a gold medal was not just about her graceful one-minute performance on the ice. Behind the perfect one-minute performance is something no one would know if they didn’t ask. It was about the countless hours of practice every day, the sacrifices, the lack of sleep, the tears, injuries, physiotherapy sessions, and the determination that led up to that moment.

The Road to Victory: Daily Practice and Self-Discipline

Behind every flawless performance are countless hours of practice. Cass’ journey was no different. She dedicated herself to daily practice, both on and off the ice. This included self-learning sessions where she would watch videos, attend online courses conducted by accomplished skaters from overseas, analyze techniques, and practice tirelessly to perfect her moves. Her commitment to the sport meant early mornings, late nights, and a schedule packed with skating lessons and self-training.

Overcoming Obstacles: Injuries and Physiotherapy

The path to success is rarely smooth, and Cass faced her share of obstacles. Injuries are an unfortunate part of any sport, and ice skating is no exception. Cass had to deal with injuries, including a lateral sprain on her ankle just three weeks before the competition. This required physiotherapy sessions and a temporary halt to her training. I thought that she would have to skip Skate Malaysia 2024. However, her determination saw her through these tough times, and she managed to recover enough to compete, though not at 100%.  Last year she fell during training and injured her back. Off she went for physiotherapy again and after the fall, I bought her butt guard pants.  Weeks before she fell, I dreamt that she fell on ice, and in my dream, I saw how she fell – she was spinning when she fell hard on the ice and flipped several times. It was every mother’s nightmare!

The Financial Commitment: An Expensive Sport

Ice skating is an expensive sport, especially if you decide to compete. The costs of rink time, coaching, equipment, costume, choreography fees, extra lessons, competition participation fees, miscellaneous fees, and physiotherapy add up quickly. Even downloading a song for her routine had a price tag to it.  As parents, we had to make sacrifices to support Cass’ dreams. This meant cutting back on other expenses and prioritizing her skating needs. Despite the financial strain, seeing her passion and growth made every sacrifice worthwhile.

The Transformation: Shaping Character and Discipline

Beyond the medals and accolades, ice skating has profoundly shaped Cass’ character. The discipline required to excel in the sport has translated into other areas of her life. She has become more focused, responsible, better at time management, and resilient. The lessons learned on the ice have made her a more disciplined individual, ready to face life’s challenges head-on.

Friday Dinner

Cass has figure skating class every Friday. She always eats something that’s not too heavy and low in carbs, yet healthy and yummy before the class. She then skates for almost 5 hours. She’s lucky she has a health freak mommy who supports her low-carbs meals and preps them for her 😁

As usual, Cass loves colors on her bowl, colors that come from the veggies and fruits. Yesterday I roasted pumpkin and shimeji mushrooms in the oven.

Roasted pumpkin and mushrooms on a bed of salad – lettuce, mizuna, raw four angle beans, purple cabbage, long beans and other veggies with roast chicken breast and a poached egg as protein.

Update on the Wart on My Left Foot

I finally decided to address the stubborn wart on my left foot and went to Sunway Medical Centre on Wednesday to see the Foot and Ankle doctor. The consultation was brief, lasting less than five minutes, and cost RM80. The doctor took one look at the corn on my foot and quickly diagnosed it as a viral wart. He then referred me to a dermatologist, mentioning that if he were to treat it, I would need minor surgery in the operating theater to have the wart removed. A surgery in the OT would cost a minimum of RM10k onwards.

The Dermatologist Consultation

After waiting for an hour to see the podiatrist, I had to wait another hour to see the dermatologist. The consultation with the dermatologist was a bit longer, around ten minutes. The doctor gave me two options for removing the wart:

Frozen Liquid Nitrogen: This method would be painful and could be a lengthy process. Blisters might form on the wart’s site, and I might need to return for additional treatments if the wart doesn’t wither away. It could take weeks before the wart dies and peels off.

Laser Surgery: This is the recommended option as the process is relatively quicker. However, the local anesthetic injections required for the procedure are painful, which worries me because I have a low pain threshold.

Insurance Hurdles

Currently, I am facing a problem with my insurance. The claims officer does not approve the laser procedure, stating that it is for cosmetic purposes. I find this very absurd because the wart is causing significant pain when I walk. I spoke to the dermatologist’s nurse, asking the doctor to write another pre-admission form to the insurance company to clarify the medical necessity of the procedure.

Whether the insurance approves it or not, I have decided to go ahead with the laser surgery next Wednesday. The pain when I walk, especially when my foot lands on its side, is unbearable. If money can buy me a better quality of life, I am willing to spend a few thousand bucks to be pain-free again.

Moving Forward

I look forward to walking without pain and being able to run again. Every step I take now is painful and it’s making me feel miserable. I have not exercised for over a month. I pray that the insurance will approve my request for the laser procedure and that the surgery will not be as painful as I fear. My goal is to regain my mobility and live without the constant pain caused by this persistent wart. Here’s to hoping for a smooth procedure and a swift recovery!

I used to chuckle to myself whenever I see people wear socks with slippers. Who’s laughing at me now? I am laughing at myself.😂 But at least I wore a pair of nice and comfy original Vans La Costa slides 🤭

Proud Moment

I’m bursting with pride and joy as I share the news of Cass’s recent triumph at the Skate Malaysia Figure Skating Competition, Delta Level. Watching her glide gracefully across the rink, executing her routine flawlessly, was a moment I’ll cherish forever. Her performance was nothing short of spectacular, and I knew right then that she had a strong chance of clinching either first or second place.

Cass’s routine was a testament to her dedication and hard work. She moved with such grace and poise, seamlessly executing each element of her routine without a single flaw. The competitor from Kuwait also performed beautifully, adding to the tension and excitement of the event. But as I watched Cass on the ice, I felt a deep sense of confidence in her performance.

After a tense half-hour wait, the results were finally displayed. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw Cass’s name at the top of the leaderboard, securing the gold medal. The contestant from Kuwait was placed second. It was an emotional moment, and I couldn’t be prouder of Cass. All her hard work, discipline, and sacrifices had paid off in the best possible way.

Cass’s journey to this victory was not without its challenges. Just three weeks before the competition, she suffered a lateral sprain of her ankle, which required her to undergo physiotherapy sessions and take a break from practice for more than a week. Despite this setback, she showed incredible resilience and determination. Although she wasn’t fully recovered, she pushed through the pain and continued to train diligently. This tenacity and spirit are what make her achievement even more remarkable.

What makes Cass’s accomplishment even more impressive is that she only began her figure skating journey at the age of 14. Most figure skaters start their training at a very young age, but Cass has proven that with passion, dedication, and hard work, it’s never too late to start. In just one year and nine months, she has honed her talent to an extraordinary level, showcasing her skills on the ice stage with international competitors and emerging victorious.

Cass’s success is a powerful reminder that talent can be both innate and developed. Her journey shows that while natural talent is a great foundation, it is the relentless practice, perseverance, and passion that truly lead to success. Cass has demonstrated that with the right mindset and effort, one can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

Contestants were from USA, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, China, Singapore and Malaysia.

Her dad gifted her a bouquet of flowers.

Plushies thrown into the skating rink after Cass’ performance by team mates and supporters. Cass still does not know who gave her some of the plushies.

Thursday, 27 June 2024

Today is the long awaited day for Cass. It’s her very first competition after joining figure skating classes for 1 year 9 months. She has put in 100% effort into this passion of hers and 100% into discipline, nutrition, and fitness while not neglecting her studies. I’m really proud of how she’s managing everything independently herself. Whether she wins or not today does not matter at all.

There were a few obstacles stacked against her lately but this little tough cookie since birth will not let them stop her from competing in Skate Malaysia.

I don’t think I will be posting photos and videos of her in her costume and dancing in the skating rink as she has requested that I refrain from posting about it. So I respect her decision. Peace to the both of us 🤞

Just a short update for today. I’m going to be busy today.

Top 5 UK Regulations for Home Electrical Installations

Ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical installations in homes across the United Kingdom is paramount. Strict regulations are in place to uphold these standards, protecting both property and inhabitants alike. Whether you are a homeowner, tenant, or landlord, understanding these regulations is essential for maintaining a safe living environment. Here are the top five UK regulations for home electrical installations that you need to know:

1. BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations)

BS 7671, commonly known as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, forms the backbone of electrical safety standards in the UK. These regulations are regularly updated to incorporate the latest technological advancements and safety measures. They cover every aspect of electrical installations, from design and installation to maintenance and testing. Key requirements include circuit design, earthing arrangements, protection against electric shock, and the use of suitable materials and methods. Compliance with BS 7671 is mandatory for all new electrical installations and modifications to existing ones in domestic properties, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards. For reliable electrical supplies in the UK, check out powerpointelectrics.co.uk.

2. RCD Protection

Residual Current Devices (RCDs) play a crucial role in preventing electric shocks and fires caused by faulty appliances or wiring. UK regulations mandate the installation of RCD protection for sockets rated up to 32 amps in all new electrical installations. Additionally, older properties must also ensure that circuits likely to supply portable equipment outdoors are protected by RCDs. These devices detect even the smallest imbalance in electrical currents and rapidly disconnect the power supply, minimizing the risk of serious injury or damage.

3. Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a comprehensive assessment of the safety and condition of an electrical installation within a property. UK regulations require landlords to obtain an EICR at least every five years or at each change of tenancy. This report identifies any defects, damage, deterioration, or non-compliance with current regulations, providing clear recommendations for remedial action. By conducting regular EICRs, landlords ensure that their properties remain safe for tenants and compliant with legal standards.

4. Socket Outlet Heights

The installation height of socket outlets is regulated to ensure both accessibility and safety within domestic environments. In general, sockets should be positioned no lower than 450mm above floor level to minimize the risk of accidental damage and make them easily accessible. Exceptions apply in specific locations, such as kitchens and areas prone to dampness, where additional protection measures against electric shock are necessary. Adhering to these regulations ensures that socket outlets are installed in a manner that prioritizes user safety while maintaining functional convenience.

5. Earthing and Bonding

Effective earthing and bonding are critical for the safety and functionality of electrical installations. UK regulations specify that all exposed conductive parts, such as metallic pipes and structural steelwork, must be effectively bonded to the main earthing terminal using suitable conductors. This ensures that any electrical faults or leakages are safely directed away from users and into the ground, reducing the risk of electric shocks and fire hazards. Proper earthing and bonding practices are fundamental in maintaining the integrity and safety of electrical systems in homes.

Conclusion

Whether you are a homeowner seeking to upgrade your electrical system, a tenant renting a property, or a landlord maintaining rental properties, familiarity with these regulations is essential. By following the guidelines and implementing proper earthing and bonding practices, individuals can contribute to creating safer living environments. These measures not only protect against electric shocks and fires but also promote peace of mind knowing that electrical installations are up to standard and safe for everyday use. Maintaining compliance with these regulations underscores a commitment to electrical safety and ensures the well-being of occupants in residential settings across the UK.

16 June 2024 ~ Father’s Day 2024

This year we celebrated Father’s Day at If Only Restaurant, a striking space of elemental elegance in the city centre. As we did not make prior reservation, we waited for almost half an hour for a table. But the wait was all worth it. We enjoyed the superb food and desserts.

If Only also hosts the second home of Universal Bakehouse for superb Shio Pan, terrific tarts, croissants, cakes, and much more. We especially love the out-of-the-world Shio Pan.

After lunch at If Only, we went to Bray to get a loaf of sourdough bread and other desserts. We got a surprise when we were informed by the staff that fathers could choose a complimentary loaf of sourdough bread in honor of fathers on Father’s Day. We chose a loaf of apple and onion sourdough. As the girls and I are now ‘experts’ in sourdough breads from our frequent purchase at different bakeries, we know what the texture of perfectly baked sourdough breads should be. We all agreed that the sourdough bread that we got from Bray was spot-on. The inside of the bread was bubbly, slightly moist and chewy and the bread had a slightly tangy taste.

The girls surprised their dad with his favorite chocolate – Whittaker’s Almond Gold chocolate bars. Sherilyn bought them from Family Mart after her dance class in the evening.

Onigiri breakfast set

Alycia’s Oden breakfast bowl. The fish cakes are not the typical Family Mart ones but house-made and very delicious.

Delicious wagyu burger

Heavenly waffles with ice-cream and caramelized bananas.

Flourless orange almond cake (my favorite!), scone, Chemor chocolate tart, and Banoffee croissant with filling of banana cream. Everyone enjoyed the desserts.

Takeaway pastries from Bray

Complimentary Father’s Day sourdough bread from Bray (costs over RM20 a loaf)

Why I Swear by Beacon Seaweed Chicken Essence

Lately, I have found Beacon Seaweed Chicken Essence to be an indispensable part of my routine. This incredible supplement helps combat fatigue, improve memory, and strengthen the immune system. Made from pure Beacon Chicken Essence, it is free of antibiotics, hormones, heavy metals, and comes from chickens with Halal certification. Here’s why I’m a firm believer in its benefits.

Two weeks ago, Alycia had to be admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery on her finger following a freakish kitchen mishap. During her three-night stay in the hospital, I almost didn’t sleep for three days. Knowing that my body requires ample sleep to function effectively, I quickly realized I needed something to help me stay healthy and alert.  Sherilyn was also unwell during that period and was on antibiotics. I was pretty sure that I was going to fall sick too and I couldn’t let it happen as I had to take care of so many things at home with a daughter who was in the hospital and would not be able to use the injured hand for at least six weeks.

That’s when I turned to Beacon Chicken Essence. I headed to the Beacon Mart in my neighborhood and bought a box. I drank a sachet every day throughout Alycia’s hospital stay and continued the routine after her discharge. Despite getting only 3-4 hours of sleep per night and no daytime naps, I felt surprisingly energetic and alert.

Each morning before heading to the hospital, I made sure to have a solid breakfast: two eggs, a slice of toast with my papa’s homemade pandan kaya, fruits, and a sachet of Beacon Chicken Essence. I stayed away from junk food. This combination helped me maintain my energy levels and stave off sickness during those exhausting days.

Thank God, I managed to avoid falling ill. Instead, I felt very alert and energetic throughout Alycia’s ordeal. After finishing the first box of chicken essence, I didn’t hesitate to buy two more boxes, especially with the promotional offer of “buy 2 boxes, get 2 free sachets.” At RM118 a box for 6 sachets of 80ml pure chicken essence, it was a worthwhile investment in my health.

Benefits of Beacon Chicken Essence

  • Combats Fatigue: Helps fight tiredness and keeps you energetic throughout the day.
  • Improves Memory: Enhances cognitive functions, which is crucial during stressful times.
  • Strengthens Immune System: Fortifies your body’s defense mechanisms to prevent illness.

Beacon Chicken Essence is made with the highest standards. It’s free from antibiotics, hormones, and heavy metals, ensuring that you consume only the purest essence. Additionally, it’s Halal-certified, making it suitable for everyone.

I don’t usually believe in off-the-shelf chicken essence, but Beacon Chicken Essence has proven its worth to me. It provides vitality, energy, and strengthens the immune system when you need it the most.

This is not a sponsored post, though I hope that Beacon Mart Management reads this and generously sends me two free boxes of chicken essence!

This is one of the most popular items in Beacon Mart. It is always sold out and I often see customers buying many boxes of it at one go. I had to pre-order the chicken essence and pay in full before the stock was delivered to me a week later.
When lightly heated up, the taste is 100% similar to homemade double-boiled chicken essence.

Beacon Mart is owned by Beacon Hospital, a hospital that specializes in oncology. Thus, the chickens from Beacon Mart are suitable for cancer patients. You can read more about Beacon Mart here.
