What’s The Difference Between Geeks and Nerds?

We often hear people referring to geek and nerd interchangeably but are these two the same? Let’s get to the 101 on geeks and nerds.

Geek 101

Geeks are enthusiasts or very knowledgeable about and obsessively interested in a particular topic, hobby, or field, especially one related to technical or intellectual pursuits.

Geeks are obsessed with collecting facts and mementos related to their subject of interest. They like to be the first few to know about the newest and trendiest things that are related to their area of interest.

Long ago, the term geek was used to describe someone eccentric or non-mainstream, who was not fashionable or popular. They were someone whose interests took precedence over popularity and, thus were thought to be socially impaired. Fast forward to the Information Age or Computer Age, if you’re called a geek, it is deemed a positive term and means that you are perceived to be very intellectual and knowledgeable.  In this era, most geeks like to wear a geek t shirt and are part of social media and hangout groups for geeks. From Mark Zuckerberg to Nikola Tesla to Bill Gates, these are some of the geekiest people to walk the planet.

A geek who plays computer games knows an extensive amount of information about computer games. They would have information on each game’s development and the company that developed it at their fingertips. They are always glued to the computer and don a gamer t shirt most of the time. Their lives evolve around computer games and some make lucrative earnings from eSports.  Some professional gamers earn salaries and receive sponsorships and even scholarships from universities for eSports programs.

Whether they’re attending a gaming contest, convention, or hanging out with fellow geeks, wearing a geek shirt creates a sense of belonging in a community of enthusiasts and serves as a badge of honor.  The designs on these shirts often reflect the interests of these people, whether it’s gaming, science, or tech stuff.

Nerd 101

A nerd is an overly intellectual individual, again of a particular topic or field.  As opposed to geeks, nerds are achievement-oriented and are likely bent on acquiring knowledge and skills over memorabilia. These people are often introverted, shy, obsessive, pedantic, and devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits. They are often socially inept and lack a good sense of fashion, dressing in a nerd shirt and in a quirky sort of way. They spend much of their time on books and unpopular or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either very technical, complicated, or related to topics such as math and science.

To those who have always thought of nerds as someone who is a weirdo, read this: Bill Gates, one of the richest men in the world, once said, “Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one”.

In conclusion, if you think someone is a nerd or a geek and wouldn’t want to be seen with these people, think again. These people that have been the butt of many jokes for their thick glasses, quirky behavior, nerd t shirts, and unfashionable clothes, are a force to be reckoned with. According to a study, nerds who were less popular as teenagers end up doing better in life than their ‘cooler’ peers. The researchers followed the lives of adolescents for ten years and found the ones labeled as ‘geeks’ went on to outperform their peers by the time they reached adulthood.

Sherilyn Wins Gold in Get The Beat Dance Competition

Today has been an exciting day for Sherilyn, as she just won two prestigious medals at the Get The Beat (GTB) dance competition! GTB is an internationally touring dance competition, and this marks Sherilyn’s second time shining on their stage. Her first victory came six years ago when she was just 13 years old, making this win even more special.

In the hip hop category for her age group, Sherilyn wowed the judges and secured a gold medal. She didn’t stop there—she clinched a Double Platinum medal in her Contemporary dance performance.

The day wasn’t without its hiccups, though. Sherilyn accidentally left her dance studio jacket behind at home, and with little time to spare before her performance at the PJ Performing Arts Centre, she ordered a Grab bike driver to get the jacket from home. I was eating breakfast half way and had to hurriedly change and bring the jacket down to the Grab driver. Despite the small drama, she stayed focused and delivered stellar performances on stage.

Today’s achievement has certainly made her a very happy camper, and as always, we’re incredibly proud of her dedication, passion, and hard work.

Why Do Some Christians Wear Christian Clothing and Accessories?

The cross is a strong symbol of love, protection, and sacrifice for Christians as Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross to save us from our sins.  Many Christians believe that wearing a cross necklace epitomizes the meaning of the cross and may protect them from evil.

Just as wearing a cross necklace, some believers wear Christian clothing and carry Christian-inspired fashion accessories to express their faith and spirituality, spread the word, and are proud to do so.  Christian apparel and fashion accessories have always been popular and there are specialty stores that sell such items. Here are some of the reasons why the trend in Christian-inspired clothing and accessories is still popular among believers.

1.  Expression of Faith

Wearing Christian t-shirts and accessories that represent our faith reminds us to be conscious of our actions and behavior and to live in a manner that reflects the love, grace, and compassion of Christ. It helps believers to stay grounded in their beliefs and to stay true to their relationship with God.

2.  To Reflect Christ’s Grace

When believers wear Christian graphic tee shirts or use Christian-inspired accessories such as bags, hats, keychains, and phone casings, it prompts them to be mindful of how to behave and to treat others with love, kindness, and forgiveness, just as how Jesus has shown us.

3.  Spreading the Word

For many believers, Christian clothing and Christian bags that they carry are more than just clothing and fashion accessories. They are instruments for spreading the word of God. They become walking billboards, promoting love and hope.

4.  Building Community

Christian apparel serves as a great instrument for expression within the Christian community, allowing believers to showcase their faith and belief.

5.  Supporting Christian-Based Businesses

Purchasing from Christian-based stores is a way to support businesses that align with the values of believers. Many of these stores donate a portion of their profit to the community or charitable causes.

In A Nutshell

Believers wear Christian clothing and use Christian-inspired accessories to express their faith and love for God. It promotes positivity, kindness, love, and hope and supports faith-based businesses. Clothing that contains an influential message is a great way to deliver your message and showcase your passion.

Alycia’s One Week Holiday in Taiwan

Upon arrival in Taipei, Alycia had a lucky moment and won 5000 Taiwan Dollars in a tourist draw at the airport, which gave her a nice bonus to spend on snacks and shopping. That’s a tidy sum of close to RM700! After landing in Taipei, Alycia and her friends hopped on a train to Tainan for a couple of days and then made their way back to Taipei.

I haven’t heard all the details of her adventures yet, as she’s been catching up on sleep since she returned early this morning after a long journey with no sleep for over 24 hours. They took a 12:45 am flight back, so she’s been out cold since she got back, waking up to eat her dinner, and then went back to sleep.

From the few updates she’s shared, Alycia had a wonderful time in Taiwan. During one of their trips to another town, their Uber driver treated them to cakes and Bingsu at a dessert shop—a sweet and unexpected gesture. Alycia didn’t miss the opportunity to shop, bringing home some cool Nike shoes and socks, and plenty of Taiwan snacks and facial masks to share.

It’s clear she had a blast, and she’ll be off again next month, this time to South Korea with another friend. I’m definitely feeling a little envious of her adventures!

Alycia’s lucky draw win of 5000 Taiwan Dollars.

With the win, she treated her friends to some ready-to-eat meals from 7-11 before they took a train to Tainan. She said the food ain’t nice 😁. Of course, these packaged foods are never nice or healthy!

Some of their meals in Taiwan.

The Uber driver (male) treated the girls to Bingsu. He ate with them at the dessert shop. He had to wait for the girls to finish all the touristy things before driving them back to Taipei.

My MIL’s order- crispy meat floss with seaweed and pineapple cakes.

My souvenir from Alycia was three packets of facial masks. She said they’re pretty expensive but I think it’s my ‘wages’ for helping her wash and dry her 7 days of dirty laundry! Definitely not a good deal for me! 😌

Would You Wear Matching Clothes With Your Family?

I would wear matching clothes with my family and I think it’s cool and fun! I used to wear matchy clothes with my three girls when they were younger and our coordinated outfits turned out beautiful in photos. Whether it’s for a birthday celebration of a loved one, a festive celebration, or a holiday, wearing matching clothes with your family, friends and loved ones creates a sense of unity and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Are you the kind who would wear matching clothes, such as family Halloween shirts or Chinese New Year shirts with your spouse or children? Let’s dive into this trend and why it’s popular.

Family Matching for Festive Seasons

Festive seasons like Christmas, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, and Deepavali are some of the most popular times for people to do family matching. By wearing coordinated festive looks, such as the same color, same design, or the same print of festive clothes, such as family Christmas shirts, these matching family clothes make for beautiful festive photos, perfect for social media bragging rights, and wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

My mum likes to buy family matching Christmas T-shirts for everyone in the family whenever there’s a Christmas gathering. Our family would gather around the Christmas tree and have lots of photos taken, before exchanging gifts. It’s a lovely tradition that we all look forward to.

Personalized Outfits for the Newborn

It’s always such an exciting and happy time whenever a new member is added to the family. Parents and grandparents can’t resist getting a personalized newborn outfit for the bundle of joy. These super cute baby outfits can be customized with names, genders, birth dates, or cute wordings. These are perfect for newborn photo sessions, baby full moon parties, or family photos. The parents, siblings, grandparents, aunties, and uncles can wear matching T-shirts with customized words, such as “Dad”, “Mom”, “Sister” and “Brother”.

Conclusion

I’m in when it comes to wearing matching clothes with my family.  Many families say yes too, especially during major festivals.  Dressing alike makes the celebration more joyous and creates lasting memories.  Whether it’s family Christmas shirts, family Halloween shirts, or outfits to welcome a new baby, dressing alike as a family is a simple way to celebrate togetherness and bond with your family.

Good Riddance

A week after our suspicious next-door neighbors, whom we suspect were involved in scamming or illegal activities, moved out, they finally had all their belongings removed. Interestingly, they didn’t even return to the unit themselves. Instead, they hired movers from Lalamove (I saw the truck with the Lalamove logo) to pack, seal, and transport their clothes and other possessions. They vacated not just their unit, but also two other units from a different block in our condo.

I can’t help but wonder where these suspicious Chinese nationals are relocating. With such a large group of people, it’s inevitable that they’ll draw attention wherever they go—especially from vigilant neighbors like me!

Yesterday, cleaners arrived to tidy up their unit, and, oh my goodness, the place was a complete mess! There was an overwhelming amount of trash, and the unit reeked of what I can only describe as rotting garbage. I had to spray a generous amount of disinfectant to cover up the stench, but even today, traces of the foul odor still linger. It’s unsettling, to say the least.

I hope my new neighbors will be someone decent. The two previous tenants were Japanese and they were all very friendly and nice folks. The first tenant, an elderly couple returned to Japan. The second tenant moved to another neighborhood nearer to their kids’ school.

Weekly Update: Busy Days and Exciting Adventures

The past week has been quite a whirlwind for me. I’ve been deeply engrossed in my writing work, juggling deadlines and trying to keep up with the pace. I managed to complete one batch of articles, only to have another, even larger batch come in from my client. Initially, I hinted that I might need a break, but my client was so accommodating to all my requests that I couldn’t say no. So, it looks like my break will have to wait another week. The silver lining is that my client agreed to a flexible deadline, which means I don’t have to rush through the work and can still carve out some time for exercise—a crucial part of maintaining my sanity amidst all the busyness!

On Alycia’s front, her finger is recovering well, which is a huge relief. She’s off to Taiwan for a holiday with her friends this Wednesday, and she’ll be gone for a week. Not stopping there, she has another trip lined up to Korea next month with a different group of friends. This semester break is truly a globetrotting adventure for Alycia, and she’s making the most of every moment.

To recap, this year Alycia has travelled to Singapore to watch Taylor Swift’s concert, to Hong Kong, and then to Bangkok with me. She’s traveling to Taiwan this month and to Korea next month. I can’t help but feel a bit envious, wishing I had done the same when I was her age but I was a workaholic. My rewards were my multiple promotions, Merit Awards and Merit Increments throughout the eight years that I worked in the bank. I But I’m so happy Alycia’s enjoying life to the fullest!

Sherilyn has also been keeping busy. She just completed her Foundation in Natural & Built Environment and is now enjoying a well-deserved month-long break before starting her first year of Bachelor of Science in Architecture. This break has been a chance for her to catch up on sleep, which I’m glad she finally has the time for. Today, she started a 4-day coffee-making class, sponsored by her university’s Barista Club, where she’s a member. I’m sure she’ll have a great time learning the art of coffee. Sherilyn is also active in her university’s dance club, and in two weeks, she’ll be competing in two international dance competitions, which are self-funded. I’m hoping she wins, as that would strengthen her application for a Talent Scholarship for her degree studies.

As for Cass, she’s been as busy as ever with her figure skating classes, heading to the rink three times a week. It’s great to see everyone so engaged in their activities, each pursuing their passions and interests.

All in all, it’s been a busy but fulfilling week for everyone. As I navigate through my writing projects and watch the girls dive into their respective pursuits, I’m reminded of how important it is to stay active and engaged in life. After all, you need to be healthy and energized to keep up with everything life throws your way!

The Throes of Living in a Condo: A Cautionary Tale

Living in a condo has its perks—convenience, 24 hours security, shared amenities, and a sense of community. But it also comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when you find yourself surrounded by suspicious neighbors or inconsiderate people who overstep boundaries.

A month ago, a group of Chinese nationals moved into the unit next to ours. At first, it seemed like any other new neighbor situation, but soon, things started to feel off. Every day, I noticed new faces—always men—coming and going. They didn’t look like regular office staff. They would always avoid eye contact with me and would quickly go back to their unit when I came out of my unit. This raised my suspicions. From my phone, I could see more than 14 WiFi names in our vicinity, most of them in Chinese characters. The sheer number of WiFi networks and the constant influx of different men made me suspect something fishy was going on. Were they involved in illegal activities, perhaps even scammers?

The situation was further aggravated by their heavy smoking. The odor of smoke was so bad that it permeated our bedrooms, making it difficult to breathe. We weren’t the only ones suffering—neighbors from other floors also complained to the condo management. The guards came up one day and spoke to me about our neighbor, confirming that they too were aware of something amiss. The owner of the unit told the office that his unit was vacant but it was in fact occupied.

It wasn’t just us who were concerned. My other neighbor, who is on the condo’s committee, and I started gathering information. We teamed up with other suspicious neighbors and eventually decided to lodge a police report. The condo management also suspected something was wrong, which added weight to our concerns.

Long story short, I believe these men suspected they were being watched. Exactly a month after they moved in, they suddenly moved out yesterday. It was such a relief—not only were we no longer subjected to seeing new, unfamiliar faces walking in and out every day, but the air was finally clear of that awful second-hand smoke. The whole ordeal was a reminder that if something feels off with your neighbors, it’s crucial to stay alert and take action if needed. Making a police report could be the first step in addressing a potentially dangerous situation.

But the condo drama didn’t end there. Today, another incident reminded me of the importance of standing your ground. I keep a shopping trolley in my parking lot for convenience. After shopping today, I returned to find my trolley missing. I searched everywhere for it, suspecting the contractor working on the floor above ours, whose car was parked inconveniently close to mine, with his tires touching my parking lot and making it difficult for me to get out of my car.

Frustrated, I went up to my unit to see if anyone had taken the trolley up but couldn’t find it. When I finally went back down to the basement, there it was—the contractor was unloading his tools into his car using my trolley! I was enraged. He had taken my trolley without asking, causing me to waste time searching for it. When I confronted him, he nonchalantly claimed that he thought anyone could use it. What nonsense!

I immediately reported the issue to the chief guard, who reprimanded both the contractor and the owner of the unit. It was a small victory, but it reminded me of the importance of standing up for your rights, even in small matters.

Living in a condo can have its convenience, but it’s important to stay vigilant and protect your space. Whether it’s dealing with suspicious neighbors or inconsiderate individuals, taking action and standing your ground can make all the difference in maintaining your peace of mind.

Perfect Presents for the Music Enthusiast

Finding the perfect present for a music enthusiast can be both exciting and challenging. Whether they’re a casual listener, an aspiring musician, or a seasoned audiophile, there’s a wide range of gifts that can hit the right note. From high-tech gadgets to timeless musical instruments, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you find the ideal gift for the music lover in your life.

1. High-Quality Headphones

For anyone who loves music, a great pair of headphones is essential. The market is filled with options, but choosing the right pair depends on the recipient’s preferences and lifestyle:

  • Noise-Cancelling Headphones: Perfect for those who enjoy uninterrupted listening, whether they’re commuting, working, or relaxing at home. Brands like Bose, Sony, and Sennheiser offer top-notch noise-cancelling headphones that deliver immersive sound quality.
  • Wireless Earbuds: Compact and convenient, wireless earbuds are ideal for the music lover on the go. Look for models with long battery life, good sound quality, and features like water resistance for workouts. Apple AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM4 are popular choices.
  • Studio Headphones: If your recipient is into music production or is a serious audiophile, consider studio-quality headphones like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro, which are known for their accurate sound reproduction and comfort.

2. Vinyl Records and Turntables

Vinyl has made a strong comeback, and many music enthusiasts appreciate the warm, authentic sound of records. If your gift recipient is into vinyl, consider these options:

  • Classic Vinyl Records: Find out their favorite bands or genres and look for original pressings or special editions. Classic albums from artists like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, or Miles Davis can make for a cherished gift.
  • Turntables: For someone new to vinyl, a turntable is a fantastic gift. Look for models that combine style with sound quality, such as the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB or the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo. If they already have a collection, an upgrade to a higher-end turntable could be the perfect surprise.
  • Record Storage and Accessories: Help them keep their vinyl collection organized with stylish storage solutions, like a vintage-style record crate or a modern shelving unit. Accessories like a vinyl cleaning kit or a record brush can also be thoughtful additions.

3. Portable Bluetooth Speakers

Portable Bluetooth speakers are great for music lovers who enjoy taking their tunes with them wherever they go. Whether for home, outdoor adventures, or travel, there’s a speaker for every scenario:

  • Compact and Waterproof Speakers: Ideal for outdoor activities, the JBL Flip 6 or the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 are rugged, waterproof, and deliver impressive sound despite their small size.
  • High-Fidelity Speakers: For those who prioritize sound quality, consider something like the Bose SoundLink Revolve+ or the Sonos Move 2. These speakers offer rich, room-filling sound and are still portable enough for different settings.
  • Smart Speakers: If your recipient enjoys smart home gadgets, a smart speaker like the Amazon Echo Studio or the Apple HomePod offers voice control and smart assistant features along with high-quality audio.

4. Musical Instruments

For the budding musician or the seasoned player, a musical instrument can be a deeply personal and appreciated gift:

  • Guitars and Accessories: Whether it’s a classic acoustic guitar like the Yamaha FG800, an electric guitar like the Fender Stratocaster, or a travel-sized guitar for the musician on the go, there are options for every skill level. Don’t forget accessories like a high-quality guitar case, a capo, or a set of custom picks.
  • Keyboards and Synthesizers: A portable keyboard like the Yamaha P-125 or a compact synthesizer like the Korg Volca series can inspire creativity in both beginners and experienced musicians.
  • Percussion Instruments: For those who love rhythm, consider gifting a cajón, a hand drum, or even a beginner’s drum kit. Percussion instruments are fun, engaging, and suitable for all ages.

5. Music-Themed Decor and Memorabilia

If your recipient loves to surround themselves with musical inspiration, consider decor or memorabilia that celebrates their passion:

  • Music Posters and Art Prints: High-quality prints of iconic album covers, concert posters, or music-themed art can add a personal touch to their space. Look for limited edition prints or work by independent artists.
  • Framed Vinyl Records: Framing a vinyl record of their favorite album is a unique and stylish way to celebrate their love of music. It’s both a decorative piece and a conversation starter.
  • Band Merchandise: T-shirts, hoodies, or other merchandise from their favorite bands can make for a thoughtful gift. Look for official merchandise or rare items from their favorite artists at reputable sites like backstageoriginals.com

Final Thoughts

When it comes to finding the perfect gift for a music enthusiast, the options are as diverse as the world of music itself. Whether it’s cutting-edge technology, a timeless musical instrument, a memorable experience, or a personalized item, the key is to match the gift with their specific interests and passions. By doing so, you’ll be sure to hit the right note and bring a smile to their face.

Alycia’s Wound Care and the Importance of Medical Insurance

Thursday, 22 August 2024

Today, Alycia returned to the hospital for a follow-up wound dressing, just three days after she was discharged. This was the first time I got a clear look at her wound—a small cut on her finger where the doctor had drained the pus, performed in the OT under LA. The sight was a stark reminder of how quickly things can escalate when it comes to health.

According to the surgeon, the infection may have been caused by dirt entering through the proximal nail folds, leading to internal complications. It’s unsettling to think that something so small could cause so much trouble. The next dressing is scheduled for Saturday, just two days from now.

Today’s dressing and consultation came with a price tag of RM190, adding to the mounting medical expenses. I’m hopeful that all these follow-up consultations and treatments will be covered by our insurance.

Reflecting on the past two months, I never imagined that the total cost to save Alycia’s finger would reach RM40,000. This experience has only reinforced my belief in the importance of having medical insurance, regardless of age. It’s a safety net that can make all the difference when unexpected health issues arise.

Haru’s Dramatic Deworming Day

Last week, what was supposed to be a routine vet visit for Haru’s half-yearly deworming pill turned into a dramatic adventure that left both Sherilyn and me with a few battle scars, courtesy of our feisty feline.

As usual, I took Haru to the vet with Sherilyn holding her in the car. The car ride was relatively uneventful, thanks to Sherilyn’s calming presence. But once we arrived at the vet, Haru’s true colors began to show. Like clockwork, she hissed and spat at the vet, especially when the vet checked her teeth. Haru has always been a bit of a drama queen during vet visits, and this time was no different.

Everything was going quite smoothly until I noticed some newborn kittens crying in a paper bag. A lady had brought the kittens to the vet, hoping they would take them in. Unfortunately, since the kittens were newborns, the vet had to turn the lady away. The sound of the kittens crying caught Haru’s attention, and that’s when things took a turn for the worse.

I was carrying Haru at the time, and the moment she heard those tiny cries, she panicked. In a flash, her deadly claws came out, and she clung to both sides of my shoulder with such force that it felt like my skin was about to be ripped off. I couldn’t help but scream in pain. The vet and her daughter rushed out to help me, and it was clear that Haru was not in a good mood.

Given the situation, I asked the vet to trim Haru’s claws while we were there. Unsurprisingly, this didn’t sit well with Haru, who became even more agitated. It was a tense few minutes, but the vet managed to cut her claws, though not without much hissing and growling from Haru.

Meanwhile, Sherilyn had found herself a distraction in the form of a cage filled with a mother cat and her kittens. She couldn’t resist patting the adorable kittens and was reluctant to leave them behind. However, when we finally got back to the car, Haru’s sharp senses picked up the scent of the kittens on Sherilyn’s hands. Without warning, she bit Sherilyn’s hand, clearly triggered by the unfamiliar smell.

By the time we got home, Haru was completely rattled. To make matters worse, a friend was visiting, and Haru, already on edge, decided that hiding under the sofa was the safest option. It took almost an hour before she felt comfortable enough to come out.

This vet trip was anything but ordinary. Between the near skin-ripping experience and Sherilyn getting bitten, it’s safe to say that Haru’s deworming day was filled with more drama than we anticipated. But despite the painful scratches, bites, and scares, it’s all part of the adventure of being a cat parent. Haru may be a handful, but we wouldn’t trade her for anything.

Haru’s claws that were clawed to my skin for a brief 5 seconds were almost as painful as the LA jab administered on my foot during my laser surgery last month 😖

Our trip to Ipoh during CNY managed to desensitize Haru’s phobia of car rides. We now need to work on desensitizing her fear of the vet.

Cute kittens up for adoption.

Alycia Underwent Another Surgery!

Yesterday was another fateful day for me that sent my heart racing the whole day.

To give you some context, on June 6th, 2024, Alycia had a freakish kitchen mishap. Her finger was badly sliced by shards of broken glass from a container when she was washing dishes at home. The injury was severe enough that she needed a 1.5-hour surgery, performed by a hand and microsurgery surgeon, to repair the damaged nerves and tendons and remove the glass pieces lodged inside. Everything seemed to be going well with her recovery, until yesterday.

Alycia had a restless night, unable to sleep due to the pain and swelling in her finger. By morning, things took a turn for the worse—there was pus oozing out from the nail area. Alarmed, she Whatsapped a photo of her finger to her doctor. The response was immediate: she needed to go to the hospital to see him right away.

It all happened so suddenly. Alycia left for SJMC alone, as I was caught up with something else and couldn’t accompany her. My mind was racing with worry when I got the call from the doctor. He calmly informed me that Alycia needed to undergo surgery in the operating theatre to drain the pus. My heart sank. The first thought that crossed my mind was, “Will our insurance cover this?” Her first surgery had already cost us RM30,000. Would this one cost just as much?

I quickly reached out to my insurance agent, and after more than 5 worrying hours, I received confirmation that the surgery was approved. We had to wait this long as the insurance website was down and the hospital had to submit the claim form manually via email, which took a longer time for reply. Relieved but still anxious, I immediately transferred RM1,000 into Alycia’s account so that she could pay the co-insurance payment (non-refundable) required by the hospital. The surgery itself was minor, but the stakes felt incredibly high. The thought of going into the OT for another surgery sounds serious.

Alycia waited until 8:30 p.m. before she was finally wheeled into the OT.  I stayed by her side as the nurses moved her bed to the operating theatre in another block. The surgery took about an hour, during which Alycia was under local anesthesia. She remained conscious the entire time, and my brave girl assured me afterward that the injection for the anesthesia wasn’t as painful as she had anticipated. She didn’t feel a thing during the surgery.

I still find it hard to believe that this happened. Just when we thought Alycia was on the road to recovery, her situation took a sudden turn. The doctor mentioned that had she not come in quick enough, the bacteria could have caused more severe damage to her tendons and nerves, potentially requiring another major surgery. I was also worried about sepsis (which could be deadly) when Alycia showed me her badly swollen finger in the morning.

This experience made me reflect on how complications after surgery can sometimes arise when you least expect them. I remember how, 15 years ago, Cass also had a bad post-surgery complication that required another operation two weeks later. And now, it’s Alycia’s turn to face a similar challenge.

The doctor has sent Alycia’s pus sample for lab testing, and we’re anxiously awaiting the results, which should come out tomorrow. I’m hoping and praying that everything turns out fine and that Alycia can be discharged soon.

Waiting in her room for the nurse to tell us what time the surgery will be. Can you see her swollen left ring finger?

After surgery – wheeled back to the ward in another block.

The waiting area outside the OT. It was very cold and I was alone waiting. There wasn’t anyone there. Pretty creepy as it was 9-ish pm… and still Hungry Ghost month 😅 . To calm myself down, I bought a few things online from Lazada 🤩 and watched all my favorite Reels on Facebook.

My dinner – BK is opposite SJMC

Back at her room and immediately messaged her friends. She was so relieved and happy after the surgery.

Living with Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome – What to Expect

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues like skin, joints, and blood vessels. EDS is caused by faulty genes that produce abnormal collagen, an essential protein in connective tissue.

There are 13 recognised types of EDS, with varying symptoms and severity. The most common form is hypermobile EDS, which causes very flexible joints.

Common Symptoms

The most common EDS symptoms involve the musculoskeletal system. Joint hypermobility causes loose, unstable joints that dislocate easily. This leads to chronic joint pain and early-onset arthritis. Muscle weakness and poor coordination are also common.

Some types of EDS weaken blood vessels, causing easy bruising, varicose veins, and rupture risk. Soft, velvety skin that scars extensively is another hallmark. Fatigue and gastrointestinal problems like heartburn, bloating, and constipation frequently occur as well.

Living with Chronic Pain

For most with EDS, chronic musculoskeletal pain is the most life-altering symptom. Joint instability and soft tissue injuries cause constant aches, reduced mobility, and loss of strength. Pain often interferes with school, work, and social life.

Finding an effective pain management plan is essential. Lifestyle changes like low-impact exercise, physical therapy, massage, and resting sore joints can help reduce daily pain. Some patients find braces, splints, or wheelchairs useful for stabilising joints. Medications like NSAIDs, nerve pain drugs, or muscle relaxants may relieve pain for some. Alternative therapies like meditation, acupuncture, or medical marijuana can also provide pain relief.

Coping Strategies

Living with chronic illness often takes an emotional toll. Many with EDS struggle with depression, anxiety, and isolation. Developing healthy coping strategies is vital. Connecting to an EDS support group provides community. Counselling helps process difficult emotions.

Mindfulness practices like meditation help manage stress. Simplifying obligations, asking for help with tasks, and budgeting rest time prevent burnout. Though EDS may limit certain activities, staying engaged socially and pursuing enjoyable hobbies improves quality of life. Celebrating small wins and focusing on what your body can do, not just what it can’t, cultivates optimism.

Work with a Coach

Working with a coach who understands and supports those living with chronic illnesses like Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome, can help. A POTS coach like Rosie Bailey can offer personalised fitness and nutrition advice, so you can become the very best version of yourself. Many people living with a chronic health condition like Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome struggle with fitness and working with The POTS Coach can make a huge difference.

Seeking Proper Medical Care

Getting an accurate EDS diagnosis is the first step. EDS is often misdiagnosed, so finding a knowledgeable specialist is key. Physical and occupational therapy helps develop strength and joint stabilisation. Cardiologists monitor heart issues, and pain management specialists help treat chronic pain. Surgery may be needed for severe joint instability or hernias in some cases. Lifelong follow-up care with a geneticist or rheumatologist knowledgeable about EDS is recommended. Lifestyle adjustments and proper treatment can make living with EDS more manageable.

What to Look for When Sourcing Fresh Produce for Your Food Business

When starting up or running a food business that uses fresh produce, it is crucial to source high-quality ingredients from reputable suppliers. The quality of your raw ingredients will directly impact the quality of your final products. Here are some key things to look for when sourcing fresh produce for your food business:

Quality and Freshness

The freshness and quality of fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy and other ingredients are paramount. Examine produce carefully for signs of spoilage, bruising, discolouration or damage. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true – lower prices may indicate the produce is older or inferior. Choose local, seasonal produce whenever possible for maximum freshness and nutritional value. Establish relationships with suppliers who can consistently provide high-quality ingredients.

Food Safety and Hygiene Standards

Your suppliers should follow strict food safety protocols and hygiene standards in their facilities. Ask about their employee training, sanitation procedures, pest control methods, use of food safety equipment, and compliance with relevant regulations. Avoid suppliers with lapses in hygiene or cleanliness. Visiting a supplier’s facility can help you assess their standards first-hand. You can then see if they use the right hygiene equipment from reputable hygiene equipment suppliers. Proper hygiene equipment for food industry includes boot washers, pallet washers and knee operated sinks.

Traceability

Reputable suppliers should be able to provide information on where ingredients were grown, what farm they came from, expiration dates, etc. This traceability protects you in case of a recall or foodborne illness outbreak. Keep detailed records of what produce you source, from which supplier, when it arrived and where it came from. Track this through your inventory system.

Storage Capabilities

Produce must be stored properly to avoid spoilage, contamination or food safety issues. Your suppliers should use proper refrigeration, containers, packaging and storage methods. Ensure your own premises has adequate cold and dry storage space and equipment. Use separate areas for raw and cooked foods. Monitor and log temperatures. First in, first out inventory rotation is crucial.

Sustainability and Ethics

Today’s consumers care about sustainability and ethical sourcing. Seek local, organic, fair trade and environmentally friendly ingredients when possible. Get to know your suppliers’ growing, breeding and distribution practices. Avoid produce that is out of season in your area, as it has a higher carbon footprint. Support small farms and food artisans.

Contracts and Relationships

Develop strong business relationships with produce suppliers through contracts, purchase orders, networking and communication. Nurture loyalty and reliability. Have backup suppliers in place in case of shortages or disruptions. Stay aware of market fluctuations and supply chain issues that could impact pricing and availability.

Regulations and Insurance

Your suppliers should comply with all relevant food safety, hygiene, packaging, labelling and transportation regulations. Carry out due diligence to avoid liability issues. Make sure your suppliers have adequate business insurance, as this protects you as their customer. Consult local regulatory agencies to ensure your sourcing and supply chain practices meet requirements.

By carefully vetting suppliers, you can source amazing fresh ingredients to create delicious, safe food products for your customers. This will build your reputation for quality and help your business thrive.

Random Updates

Hey y’all! I’ve been super busy lately – with work, celebrations, house work, and running the household. I’ve not been exercising regularly since two months ago, but still feel like I have a good workout everyday, from doing housework, running errands, running the house, and writing marathon. Some of my clients from China are very strict with deadlines and I am perpetually working my brain in full steam to submit my work. These clients are also very particular with the contents produced with strictly zero plagiarism and zero AI-content. And some of the topics are beyond my ken. Anyway, life goes on and writing I must as I need the moolah.

Just a short update today as I have to continue with my writing marathon. Here’s another K-pop dance video of Sherilyn and her dance team, shot at Starhill recently. If you can’t spot her, she’s the one with a double braided pony tail.
