How to Make Time for Hobbies When You Have a Baby

The arrival of a new baby brings joy along with sleepless nights, endless feeding, nappy changes, and general chaos. While your little one becomes the focus of your world, it’s important not to completely neglect your hobbies and interests. Carving out small pockets of personal time will make you a happier, more relaxed parent. Follow these tips to make space for the things you love.

Get Creative with Your Schedule

After the initial newborn haze lifts, aim to establish some sort of routine. Look for windows of time when your baby happily plays independently. Use this time to pick up a hobby for 20 minutes here or there. The key is flexibility – be prepared to pause what you’re doing when your baby needs you. Over time, you’ll discover patterns you can take advantage of in your day.

Involve Your Little One

Choose hobbies you can do with your baby close by. Arts and crafts projects are great for this. As you colour, paint or draw, chat away to your little observer. Not only will you enjoy your hobby time, but you’ll be also stimulating your baby’s development. Investing in a front carrier like the Ergobaby or a sling can allow you to get creative while keeping baby snuggled close.

Take Advantage of Nap Times

A sleeping baby means hobby time for mum! Use your baby’s daytime snoozes to catch up on scrapbooking, peruse craft books like the top drawing books for beginners, or even take an online photography course. Keep the best books for learning to draw and all your supplies or devices in easy reach so you can jump into action as soon as those little eyelids get heavy. The key is preparation since nap lengths vary.

Get Dad or Your Partner Involved

Negotiate set hobby times by enlisting the help of your significant other. While you disappear into the craft nook or home office for an hour or two, have them take over baby duty. Then, return the favour so they can enjoy their own special interests. This time is sacred, so avoid non-essential interruptions.

Connect with Other New Parents

Arrange a parent craft group in your neighbourhood. Take turns hosting so you can work on hobby projects together while the babies entertain each other. Not only is this a great way to enjoy ‘me time’, but you also get to build friendships with others who understand the joys and challenges of new parenthood.

Join Forces with Your Little One

As your baby grows into a toddler, get them involved in simple arts and crafts. Provide lots of safe materials you don’t mind making a mess with! Be prepared to step in if frustration surfaces. Not only will this allow you hobby time, but you’ll also nurture your child’s creativity. As a bonus, independent play skills emerge when toddlers engage in creating.

Making time for yourself and your special interests is vital for your emotional health as a new parent. Applying even one or two of these suggestions can open up small but essential breathing spaces in an otherwise baby-focused routine.

Navigating Storms: How I Manage Anger and Rediscover Inner Peace

This morning, I found myself caught in a tempest of anger provoked by unkind words by a family member. I reacted with a storm of retorts before deciding to retreat. Walking away from the conflict, I sought refuge in the nearby plaza, hoping to find a balm for the emotional wounds inflicted by unkind and sarcastic words.

In the eye of this emotional storm, I discovered my unique way of weathering the rage and finding solace.  Amidst the solitude of the plaza, I treated myself to a tranquil brunch—an indulgence rarely granted. A plate of my favorite fried mee hoon and a refreshing bowl of cendol became the elixir to soothe my agitated soul.

With the scent of anger still lingering, I indulged in some retail therapy. The act of picking up unnecessary household items became a distraction, diverting my mind from the lingering shadows of the earlier confrontation. In these moments, I found a semblance of control.

The brunch may have cost me RM31, a seemingly extravagant expense for a solo meal. However, I realized that the investment was not merely in food; it was an investment in reclaiming my sanity and dousing the fire within me. Sometimes, spending a little extra on self-indulgence is the antidote to the toxic residue of anger. Money can indeed buy happiness!

Acknowledging that anger can be detrimental to health, I’ve embraced the importance of finding outlets to release these turbulent emotions. The lunch, shopping, and solitary moments became my catharsis, preventing the festering anger that could lead to chronic health issues.

Suppressing anger can be toxic; hence, it’s crucial to identify healthy ways to release and manage these emotions before the accumulated toxicity gives birth to chronic diseases. I’m glad that I’ve found ways to manage my anger and to bring myself back to sanity.  What are your ways of managing anger?

My brunch today. I finished the Cendol and ate only half the fried mee hoon.

Expert Tips for Effectively Managing and Reducing Stress

Stress is an inevitable part of life that can negatively impact our health and well-being if left unchecked. Finding healthy and effective ways to manage stress is crucial for living a balanced, peaceful life. This article provides expert tips for alleviating anxiety, relieving stress, and promoting overall serenity. Read on for insights into techniques like tapping therapy, mindfulness, exercise, organisation and more.

  1. Tapping Therapy

Also known as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping therapy has become a popular self-help technique, especially in the UK. This approach draws from ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. The basic method of tapping UK involves tapping with the fingertips on various meridian points on the body while focusing mentally on the specific stressor. Tapping helps calm the nervous system to restore balance in the body and mind.

Organisations and advocates of EFT in London note that tapping is easy to implement anytime, anywhere. Studies show tapping therapy can reduce symptoms associated with anxiety, PTSD, phobias, fatigue and more. This drug-free approach for stress relief and anxiety allows people to take control of their mental health. Clinical trials confirm using EFT for anxiety is effective for most patients. When feeling particularly tense or worried, spend a few minutes calmly tapping through the EFT sequence for positive results.

  1. Practise Mindfulness

Living purposefully in the present moment cultivates tranquillity. Mindfulness techniques aim to ground us, mute the stressful mental chatter, and bring stillness. This may involve focused breathing, body scans, visualisation, or mantra repetition during mundane tasks. For example, while washing the dishes, consciously focus the mind on the warm water, soap suds and cleansing motions instead of allowing it to wander. Yoga, meditation, journaling and walking outdoors also effectively clear mental clutter. Make mindfulness a regular ritual by setting aside 10 minutes a day for these practices.

  1. Get Moving

Nothing shakes off stress quite like exercise and movement. Not only does physical activity release feel-good endorphins that boost mood naturally, but it also enhances focus and sleep. Ideally, aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, along with some strength training. This could mean brisk walking, swimming, cycling or even just cleaning the house vigorously. Dancing and gentle stretching like beginner Pilates work wonders as well. Customise a manageable fitness plan that you enjoy and stick with it. Staying active will keep you humming happily along.

  1. Organise Your Environment

External disorder directly feeds internal turmoil. Cluttered homes and workspaces drain mental energy and spark frustration. Make it a habit to tidy these spaces frequently so they remain restful havens that support stability. Store things properly, clear flat surfaces, and purge unnecessary items. Design efficient organisational systems like filing cabinets, shelves, bins, and cupboards tailored to your lifestyle. These smoothing measures establish a sanctuary protecting your peace.

Incorporate one or more of these four strategies above to ease anxiety and stabilise your mood long-term. Little daily steps to care for mental health prevent tension from accumulating into overwhelming stress.

Nurturing Individuality in Three Remarkable Daughters

As a mother, watching my three daughters evolve into distinct individuals with unique characters and aspirations has been a remarkable journey. Each one sails their seas, braving the waves of challenges, embracing growth, and steering towards their dreams.

Alycia: The Party Maven: Our eldest, Alycia, has transformed from a once shy, super quiet, and non-sociable girl into a vibrant socialite. Balancing her studies and work, she embraces the party scene with enthusiasm, morphing into a party animal. Thank God she totally can’t drink, not even a mouthful of booz, or she will throw up.  As she journeys into adulthood, turning 21 in December this year, maturity has graced her thinking, infusing tact into her interactions. Her determination to work hard and play hard exemplifies the modern woman she is becoming, embodying the essence of balance and responsibility.

Sherilyn: Dance Enthusiast:  Middle child Sherilyn, once the preschool and primary school chatterbox, has evolved into a discerning individual when it comes to friendships. She was once jokingly named ‘7-11’ by a relative because of her mouth yakking non-stop. As she matures, she’s now mellowed down and is more of a quiet girl.  Immersed in the world of dance, she channels her energy into dance classes, competitions, and video shoots during her free time. She also works part-time at two cafes (one in her uni and one nearer to home), whenever she has an off day from uni. She has to work to pay her dance classes, costumes and makeup. She also attended several barista and coffee art courses, on her own accord and money, to equip herself with an added skill which has now proven to be extremely helpful in the cafes that she works at. Her dedication to her craft is palpable, and every step she takes reflects her commitment to self-expression and personal growth.

Cassandra: Fitness Junkie: The youngest, Cass, navigates the tumultuous seas of teenage hormones with a dash of moodiness. She’s the toughest for me to handle now.  However, her heart beats for figure skating, a passion that absorbs all her free time and savings. Beyond the ice rink, she embraces a holistic approach to fitness—running and gym workouts every day, bouldering, hiking, and badminton—a testament to her love for an active lifestyle.

As a mother, my aspirations intertwine with theirs. My deepest wish is for my three daughters to thrive, and to lead lives filled with comfort, good health, and boundless happiness.

As my daughters embark on their journeys, I harbor dreams of my own—to traverse the world. Before I start planning my travels to my dream countries (Norway is one of them!), I made a promise to my girls that I would treat them each to a holiday where I would travel with only one daughter each time to an overseas country.  Now, I have to work on making this promise I made to them materialize.

Navigating University Life

As the pages of time turn swiftly, my two older daughters find themselves embarking on different chapters of their university lives. Alycia, my eldest, is gearing up for her fourth and final year which will commence in September this year, while Sherilyn, my middle child, eagerly anticipates the commencement of her degree studies after she completes the Foundation in Natural and Built Environments in August this year.

Alycia: A Transition to Internship and Beyond

Alycia, on the brink of turning 21 in December, stands at the cusp of a significant transition. With her fourth year in university approaching, the prospect of internships looms on the horizon. Conversations with her now involve discussions about the corporate world and makeup—an aspect she finds more of a necessity/chore than a pleasure. The carefree days of primary school seem like a recent memory to me, and yet, the responsibilities of adulthood beckon. As she reluctantly put on a light touch of makeup for a friend’s birthday party just now, the realization of soon entering the professional realm begins to dawn.

Alycia’s recent assignment from her Strategic Advertising class – a postcard to create awareness on diabetes in Malaysia. She did this postcard from scratch, from the design to the text, caption, to sourcing for a printing shop to have the postcard printed.

The back of the postcard, which even comes with a QR code.

Sherilyn: Dance, Dreams, and Degree Studies

Starting her first year of degree studies in September this year, Sherilyn passionately returns to her love for dance. A few months’ hiatus recently due to a foot injury hasn’t deterred her spirit. Balancing academia and her devotion to dance, Sherilyn actively attends classes at two different studios—one near her university in Subang and another closer to home. Dance remains her first love, and while she dreams of pursuing a degree in performing arts, my old-school convictions nudge me towards a more conventional path. I am still of the opinion that one cannot make a comfortable living being a dancer / dance teacher / entertainer in Malaysia. Correct me if I’m wrong to have this opinion.

Throwback photo of Sherilyn’s lunch box of ramen with unagi, air-fried chicken chop, avocado and seaweed. She still brings a bento box to uni on most days. She complains that the food sold on campus is too expensive (like over RM15 for a simple plate of economy rice), so she brings food from home.

Another throwback photo of Sherilyn’s lunch box to uni – boiled pork + chives dumplings made by a Taiwanese housewife.

My hopes echo a universal sentiment: that whatever career path my daughters choose, it will bring them joy, a stress-free life, and the means to live comfortably.

As a parent, my aspirations for my daughters extend beyond academic achievements. Their pursuit of happiness and fulfillment in their chosen paths takes precedence. The pages of my two older daughters’ university journey turn, and I, as their mother and cheerleader, eagerly await the chapters that unfold, praying and hoping that they will make right choices in life.

Navigating the New Year: Catsitting For Haru and School Beginnings

As our family steps into the realm of 2024, the days unfold with a mix of anticipation, adjustments, and a fervent hope for a kinder, gentler year. The beginning of the new year marks not just the start of school for my youngest daughter, Cass, but also the countdown to a significant event in the life of my pandemic cat, Haru—the first time she ventures into a catsitter’s realm. The boarding will commence on 7 February 2024, for 7 days, which is the minimum number of days set by most exclusive cat boarders.

For Haru, the timid feline presence that has become an inseparable part of my daily life, the prospect of spending seven days away from her familiar home is met with a mix of trepidation and hope. Haru’s exclusive boarding promises a private haven with a window to the outside world and a CCTV connection for our virtual interactions. Yet, my heart is filled with prayers that this catsitting venture unfolds seamlessly, ensuring Haru’s comfort and well-being. My greatest wish is for Haru to accept the catsitter without turning aggressive towards her, without turning into a nervous cat, without falling sick, and for Haru to eat and drink well, poo, and pee well.

Meanwhile, the echoes of the school bell signal not just the start of a new year but a fresh chapter in Cass’s academic journey. Senior High One (Form 4) places her in the top class of her chosen stream—Commerce. While academic achievements are part of the journey, my deepest wish for Cass extends beyond grades. It is a hope for her happiness, the forging of meaningful friendships that last a lifetime, and good health that remains free from the shadows of urinary tract infections and kidney infections.

As the calendar flips its pages, the specter of Cass’s urinary tract issues loom on the horizon. Yet, for now, our focus is for her to complete her high school first, as any surgery (which, most likely will be major) will be very disruptive to her studies. The pursuit of intensive medical investigations will wait until after her SPM, a pivotal examination that lies two years ahead. A gap year post-SPM will then provide the space to seek a skilled surgeon (most likely private and will cost a lot) who can unravel the mysteries behind her health concerns and guide her toward a successful resolution, conclusively.

The dawn of January brings not just resolutions but also a familiar dance with finances as school, college, and university fees beckon. The first two weeks of the year always witness a significant outflow from the bank account—a reminder that financial hurdles accompany the pursuit of education. In this dance, my heartfelt plea to 2024 is for a better and stronger financial journey for both my hubby and me.

Here’s to hoping that the new year unfolds with grace, resilience, and a generous sprinkling of kindness and good health for my family and yours too.

Drunk cat found outside hubby’s kitchen. Just kidding 😸. We found a new cat outside hubby’s kitchen, a cat that we’ve not seen before. There are many stray cats around his shop and many of them are Haru’s sibling and relatives. Each time I stumble upon these cats, I’m very tempted to bring them home but I know that this will not happen. One cat is enough for me.

Haru Turns 3

Our precious pandemic kitty, Haru just turned 3! She was born circa end of December 2020, right outside hubby’s office, on a staircase landing, behind some catering decor. Our country was still under a partial lockdown and his office was quiet for days because of the year-end festivities. When hubby returned to his office, he found treasure 😹😹

From a non-cat lover, I am now officially a crazy cat lady 🤪

We were all too busy to prep a cat-friendly cake for Haru, so I bought her favorite foods to treat her on her birthday – grilled salmon fish head (salt and sugar-free) and roast chicken breast (shredded).

Several weeks ago, I booked a catsitter/cat boarder for Haru for CNY this year. This is an exclusive cat boarder where Haru will get an entire room to herself. And the price? Almost a thousand Ringgit for 7 days, inclusive of pet transport!

I can even watch Haru via CCTV on my phone 24/7. I hope Haru will not be aggressive towards this catsitter or howl all day or she may be returned to me. This is one of the strictest catsitters I’ve known. Thus, I have to send Haru to the catsitter a few days before we return to Ipoh as trial-boarding. I also have to deflea Haru at the vet with only 3 specific brands of deflea meds purchased from a vet and have the procedure recorded and video sent to the catsitter, as a requirement before boarding starts.

I’ve been praying hard that Haru will love her catsitter so that I can have a complete peace of mind while we travel back to Ipoh for CNY🙏.

Reflecting on 2023: Gratitude, Hope, and Wishes for the New Year

As the final moments of 2023 fade into the past, it’s time to reflect on the year that was—a year marked by swift transitions, unexpected turns, health scares, and a myriad of experiences.

The passing of 2023 seemed almost like a blink of my eye. In the ebb and flow of life, our family encountered moments of triumph and challenges, creating a mosaic of experiences that shaped the year. Despite the ups and downs, the overarching sentiment is one of gratitude. Gratitude for the lessons learned, the strength discovered, and the love that held us together.

Welcoming the first day of 2024, my heart is filled with hope—for brighter days, for new opportunities, and for the chance to create more cherished memories with those I hold dear.

My greatest wish for the new year centers on the cornerstone of well-being—good health and safety. I pray for robust health and safety for myself and all my loved ones. May each day be a gift of vitality, strength, and well-being.

For my husband’s catering business, I wish for its continued success and prosperity. May the coming year bring new opportunities, satisfied clients, and the continued growth of a venture that brings joy to our family and those we serve.

Academic success is a beacon for my three daughters. As they navigate the halls of education, my prayer is for diligence, resilience, and the attainment of academic goals. May the new year be a chapter of learning, growth, and accomplishments for each of them.

I pray for God’s blessings to encompass every aspect of our lives—for guidance in moments of uncertainty, strength in times of weakness, and grace that abounds in both joy and challenges.

As I pen down my reflections and wishes for the new year, I extend the same sentiments to you and your family. May 2024 be adorned with blessings and good health, days filled with joy, and marked by prosperity. May your journey be guided by love, strengthened by resilience, and illuminated by the light of hope and God’s blessings.

In closing, let’s step into 2024 with hearts open to possibilities, minds attuned to gratitude, and spirits anchored in faith. Here’s to a year of abundance, growth, and the unwavering presence of love. Happy New Year to all my readers!

We had our first brunch of the year at UO Shin Japanese Restaurant at Millerz Square today, followed by coffee and desserts at HWC x Quack Quack Bakery.

Christmas 2023

Christmas 2023 unfolded as a day of joy, reflection, and, of course, indulgence in the finest festive feasts. From morning church service to a heartwarming family dinner, the day was a celebration of love, togetherness, and a culinary feast that left taste buds tingling.

The day kicked off with a Christmas service at 9 a.m. at the Trinity Methodist church. Post-service, our stomachs were treated to a Malaysian classic – catered food by our church comprising of Nasi Lemak and coffee from Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock Kopitiam. Sherilyn and Cass couldn’t resist digging into a plateful of Nasi Lemak crowned with a generously portioned whole fried chicken leg. I opted for a cup of instant 3-in-1 coffee (less sugar) just to try this particular brew from Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock.

Following the church festivities, we (our family and two of hubby’s aunts) ventured to our favorite haunt, Red Kettle Café, for a sumptuous lunch where we waited for over half-hour wait for a table. Hubby, true to tradition, ordered an array of our preferred dishes, including chicken chop, pork burger, three spaghetti styles, and a special Christmas grilled pork rib dish. Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous lunch at Red Kettle.

Sumptuous lunch at Red Kettle.

Dinner was once more at Aunty Wendy’s house for our annual Christmas dinner party. The table was a spectacle of homemade festive indulgence, boasting roast chicken, baked ham, prawn salad, roast potatoes, roast veggies, roast lamb leg, piggy in a blanket, minced pies, Stollen, Panettone, fruit cake, and a delightful addition—Sherilyn’s masterpiece, a Charcuterie board.

Christmas dinner

We’ve not been able to find frozen turkeys for the last two Christmas, so had to make do with roast chicken.

With so many rich and delectable treats gracing our table throughout the day, the joy of Christmas feasting was undeniable. With Chinese New Year just less than two months away and the excess calories consumed in December, I now have a renewed commitment to exercise even harder 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

24 December 2023 ~ Random Updates

Christmas dinner came early for us this year. Hubby roasted turkey at his kitchen for us and his staff on 22nd December, on Winter Solstice Festival.

There was a delish accompanying sauce for the roast turkey, made from the turkey oil and innards. My thoughtful hubby even deboned the meat for me to bring home for his girls.

I boiled a ginger + pandan leaves + purple sweet potato tong sui to go with the tong yuen.

The girls are crazy over this store-bought tong yuen with black sesame filling. I boiled two packets but still there wasn’t enough for everyone. Next time I have to boil three packets.

A few days ago, Alycia and her course mates were invited by their Thai classmate to his house for dinner. All the food on the dining table here was cooked by the boy’s Thai mum. Amazing!

The girls were all busy today – Alycia was at her weekend part-time job, Sherilyn was at a dance competition and Cass was out the entire day, so I took over the Christmas gift-wrapping task this year. When Alycia got home from work, she helped a bit. Hubby wasn’t pleased with the gifts that I bought earlier and we made an impromptu plan to shop for new gifts this afternoon 🤨.

Tomorrow will be a long and busy day for me. I’ll be up very early to complete some chores, then leave the house by 8.30am for Christmas service in church. Then we’ll be having lunch, followed by the annual Christmas party at hubby’s aunt Wendy’s house in the evening.

I’d like to wish all my amazing blog readers, friends and loved ones a season of warmth, joy, and happy moments. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season. Thank you for being a part of my journey ❤️🤟🎄🎅

My Love Affair with Nike Running Shoes

When it comes to footwear, one brand has consistently stood out for me, transcending mere utility to become a vital part of my daily life—Nike running shoes. The unparalleled comfort, exceptional quality, and a touch of personal history make Nike my go-to choice, transforming my daily strides and contributing to a healthier lifestyle.

My love for Nike running shoes lies in their remarkable comfort and unwavering quality. Ever since I made the switch from sandals to Nike, I’ve noticed a significant uptick in my daily step count. I can also walk so much faster in running shoes vs. sandals, even for activities such as running errands and mall shopping. The comfort they provide encourages me to walk more, inadvertently aiding in shedding some extra weight. In addition, covered shoes protect my feet and they are not exposed to dirt from the streets. Nike’s commitment to quality ensures that each step is cushioned, making my daily activities from running errands to exercise a joy.

It was during the start of the pandemic in 2020 that I made a switch to wearing only running shoes each time I left the house. The pandemic prompted a re-evaluation of not just our lifestyles but also our choice of footwear. Gone were the days of slipping on sandals for a quick errand or a shopping spree. Instead, I embraced the protective embrace of Nike running shoes. The shift was not only about comfort but also about safety, as covered shoes offered better protection for my feet in the age of heightened hygiene concerns.

Before the pandemic, Christmas meant a special tradition in our family—new Nike shoes for everyone, courtesy of my hubby. However, with lockdowns and restrictions keeping us confined at home, the tradition took a brief hiatus for three years. This year, as a heartwarming surprise, my husband bought me three pairs of Nike running shoes, symbolizing the missed years and marking a return to the cherished tradition.

Among the trio of Nike running shoes that now graces my collection, one pair holds a special place—the Pink Nike Free RN NN Women’s Road Running Shoes. Spotted at JD last month, these shoes captured my attention with their vibrant hue (pink is my all-time favorite color!) and sustainable materials. Priced at RM439, these Nike Free shoes are not just a fashion statement but a conscious choice for environmentally friendly footwear.  I didn’t immediately buy it from JD when I saw them at Mid Valley Megamall. Instead, I went to the official Nike Malaysia website and showed them to the hubby. When there was a sale going on much later, he bought a pair of Nike shoes for himself and also the Pink Nike Free RN NN Women’s Road Running shoes for me.

Each step in my Nike shoes is not just a stride; it’s a celebration of the love for quality, the joy of movement, and the vibrant hues that make every walk an adventure.

Proactive vs. Reactive On Matters Pertaining To Health: Which One Are You?

In the intricate dance of life, our approach to health often falls into two distinct categories: proactive and reactive. Some individuals, like myself, lean towards the proactive side, diligently attending yearly check-ups and routine medical scans. However, there exists a minority who, feeling healthy and in tune with their bodies, dismiss the idea of regular medical examinations. In this exploration of perspectives, there’s been an ongoing debate: Is it necessary to undergo annual medical check-ups, routine scans, and blood tests?

The Proactive Path: As a self-proclaimed health enthusiast or, as some might playfully call me, a hypochondriac, my journey towards proactive health began two decades ago after the birth of my first child. Annual pap smears, ultrasound scans of reproductive organs, and in recent years, mammograms have become steadfast rituals. Any inkling that something wasn’t quite right prompted a swift visit to the doctor. For many, this approach is seen as a vital means of early detection—a proactive stance aimed at safeguarding well-being. After all, any malignancy, when detected at an early stage, gives you a good chance of full recovery and a higher survival rate.

The Minority Opinion: Contrary to the proactive crowd, there are individuals who resist the annual ritual of medical check-ups. They argue that as long as they feel good, there’s no necessity for scans, blood tests, or routine check-ups. My older brother, approaching 53, and my insurance agent, in her mid-50s, both fall into this minority. Their stance hinges on the belief that an attuned awareness of one’s body can obviate the need for regular medical examinations.

The Dilemma: To Test or Not to Test? The question of whether to undergo annual medical check-ups and blood tests sparks varied opinions. The belief in early detection as a lifesaving measure propels many toward the examination table. However, some argue that our bodies often signal distress through symptoms, rendering routine check-ups redundant.

My Conversation with the Skeptics: Yesterday, I engaged in a conversation with my insurance agent about the advisability of a colonoscopy, given that I’m now 50 years old. Her response was a resolute refusal. Feeling good about her body, she dismissed the necessity for any medical tests or check-ups. She has never done any sort of medical check-ups before. I wish that I could be as healthy, assured, and optimistic as her.

Your Opinion: So, where do you stand on the spectrum of proactive vs. reactive health? Do you believe in the power of early detection through routine medical examinations, or do you align with those who prefer to rely on their body’s signals? The debate is open, and perspectives are as diverse as the individuals navigating the labyrinth of health and wellness.

The question lingers: Is the annual medical check-up a necessary ritual, or can a keen awareness of one’s body suffice? As the debate continues, the choice remains deeply personal, guided by individual beliefs, experiences, and a quest for holistic well-being.

My kind of meal – colorful, rich in fiber and high in protein. So yummy. I could eat this everyday.

A simple fruit and veggie salad for Cass’ lunner.

Cass’ request for Fridays – sandwich and salad as she wants something that’s easy and quick to eat. After she comes home from school at around 3.30pm, she has a quick lunner, then rushes to the skating rink for figure skating practice followed by class. She comes home at around 10.45pm on Fridays. Such a hectic and exhausting day but she has no complaints.

December Celebrations

The past week has been a busy week for our family – busy with celebrations, eating and late nights.

2 December 2023 ~ we attended the wedding of our very good friend’s daughter at Noble Mansion.

7 December 2023 ~ we had an early birthday celebration for the MIL at Ming Room, Bangsar Shopping Centre. MIL’s birthday falls on 9th December but we have a relative’s wedding to attend, thus we celebrated her birthday earlier. My SIL from Hong Kong came back for the celebrations.

8 December 2023 ~ pre-wedding dinner at the groom’s house and the menu’s theme was Hakka dishes. I indulged in all my favorite Hakka dishes from black vinegar pig trotters to rice wine chicken, Hakka braised pork and much more.

The couple registered their marriage in 2020 and the wedding banquet was booked for 2020, but had to be called off for 3 years before it finally materialized, no thanks to Covid. The entire family from New Zealand came back for the wedding banquet. The groom and bride and their super cute 2-YO baby girl flew back from the USA for the celebration.

9 December 2023 ~ We got up early to attend the tea ceremony at the groom’s house. In the evening, we were all dressed up to the nines to attend the grand wedding at the EQ Hotel (previously Equatorial). By the time we got home and showered, we only got into bed at 2 a.m.

10 December 2023 ~ with only 4 hours of sleep, I got up at 6-ish a.m. to do the usual house chores before sending Alycia to the cafe for her weekend part-time job. Before I could even have a short nap, we headed to Ming Room @ BSC again for dim sum lunch with hubby’s cousins from NZ, Taiwan, England and KL. I conked out at 9.30 p.m. and had a good 7 hours of sleep.

Wedding lunch at Noble Mansion on 2 December 2023:

Iberico pork ribs – everyone’s favorite dish. We were given disposable gloves to savor the ribs.

Fried fresh prawns noodles. This was so delish but everyone was so stuffed that the dish was hardly touched. We doggy-bagged this home for our lunch the next day 😀

Desserts.

MIL’s 78th birthday dinner at Ming Room, BSC on 7 December 2023:

Clockwise from top left: Yakitori, Steamed Soon Hock fish, London style roast duck, and steamed village chicken with minced ginger dipping.

Clockwise from top left: Deep fried pumpkin balls with steamed pumpkin and assorted veggies, longevity noodles, pork belly and salted fish in claypot and braised Chinese spinach ‘watt tarn’ style.

MIL and her childhood bff of over 70 years. At 78, Aunty Jackie is a super capable lady who still runs a car repair and service workshop. She drives her besties in an MPV to Ipoh regularly.

Steamed piggy bun with lotus paste and duck’s egg.

The groom is back at his parents’ house for the tea ceremony after the Wedding Gate Crash to receive the bride.

The next gathering of the Yaps will be on Christmas Day for the yearly Xmas dinner at aunty Wendy’s house (just a few floors below ours) for another feast! I’m already 1.5kg heavier! 🤪
