Our recent stay at Novotel Platinum in Bangkok was nothing short of extraordinary—a perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and culinary delights that left a lasting impression on Alycia and me. From its prime location to its delectable buffet breakfast and massage, every aspect of our stay surpassed our expectations and added a special touch to our Bangkok adventure.
The decision to book our accommodation at Novotel Platinum was a result of thorough research. I told Alycia that I wanted to book a hotel that is located at a prime location, must be clean (I’m OCD), and must have good Google reviews. After scouring through Google reviews and considering our priorities, we found ourselves drawn to this modern hotel nestled in the heart of Bangkok’s bustling city center. I paid RM2,118 for 3 nights stay.
One of the highlights of our stay was undoubtedly the daily buffet breakfast at Novotel Platinum. As a self-professed breakfast enthusiast, I was delighted by the wide array of dishes and culinary delights that awaited us each morning. From sumptuous Thai delicacies to international favorites, there was something to tantalize every taste bud. Healthy options were wide and delightful too – from slow-pressed juices to freshly cut fruits, Greek yogurt, low-fat yogurt, a wide array of salad and cheeses, nuts, seeds, healthy hummus, oatmeal, and much more. The scrumptious Thai food, eggs cooked in a variety of styles, Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines were just a few of the many delights that made each breakfast a memorable affair. It’s safe to say that the buffet breakfast at Novotel Platinum was a highlight of our trip—an experience that we still reminisce about fondly.
Beyond the comforts of our hotel, Bangkok itself offered a vibrant tapestry of experiences waiting to be explored. From bustling markets to iconic landmarks, and modern shopping malls, Alycia and I immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of Thai culture, bonding over shared adventures, culinary discoveries, and shopping excursions. While Bangkok’s bustling streets and vibrant atmosphere may bear close similarities to Kuala Lumpur, its abundance of modern shopping malls, tuk tuk cars, and the Songkran water festival added an exciting twist to our trip.
On the downside, due to our continuous currency depreciation, we discovered that things are more expensive in Bangkok compared to our homeland.
As we reflect on our time at Novotel Platinum and our adventures in Bangkok, we are filled with gratitude for the memories made and the moments shared. From the warm hospitality of our hotel to the vibrant energy of the city, our breathtaking experience of stepping on the transparent glass tray 314 meters above ground (on the 74th floor) at the Mahanakhon Skywalk, and our very first experience dining on a cruise ship, every aspect of our stay left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Introduction to Wellness
The journey to comprehensive wellness requires an understanding that one’s health is not solely determined by physical abilities or the absence of sickness. Wellness is a multifaceted endeavor that integrates life’s physical and psychological aspects. It demands a continual commitment to personal growth, self-awareness, and behavioral change, leading to a fulfilling and balanced life. For instance, Denver fitness center offers wellness enrichment through a nurturing environment. Here, one can find the resources and support needed to develop a regimen for physical fitness, which, as we will explore, is intrinsically tied to mental health.
The Fundamentals of Physical Fitness
To truly optimize our wellness, we must grasp the essential components of physical fitness. Physical fitness doesn’t merely indicate one’s stamina or muscular capability. It’s a conglomeration of attributes, including cardiovascular and aerobic endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. These components collectively enhance our ability to perform daily activities with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, while reducing our risk of chronic diseases. The objective is to build a well-rounded fitness routine that contributes positively to our overall health and lays a robust foundation for nurturing our mental and emotional states.
Mental Health and Its Connection to Exercise
The narrative surrounding mental health has expanded dramatically, recognizing the profound effect exercise has on our psychological well-being. The quintessential benefits of exercise extend beyond building muscles or improving cardiovascular health; they also include significant enhancements to mood, mental clarity, and emotional stability. Engaging in regular physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters, and can act as a buffer against the symptoms of depression and anxiety. This is corroborated by extensive studies, which underscore exercise as a powerful modality in improving mental health and contributing to overall happiness and quality of life.
Designing a Fitness Plan That Supports Mental Well-being
While devising a fitness regime, it’s crucial to acknowledge that its benefits are not merely physical. A well-tailored workout plan can be a significant catalyst in combating stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. To this end, exercise should not exclusively focus on intensity or frequency but also the quality and mindfulness of the activity. Incorporating mindful practices such as yoga, Pilates, or meditative walks into your routine can amplify the therapeutic effects on mental well-being. These activities encourage a mindful presence and deepened body awareness, acting as a grounding force that fosters inner peace and mental resilience.
Nutritional Influence on Physical and Mental Health
The adage “you are what you eat” holds not only for our physical health but also our mental state. Food fuels our bodies and profoundly impacts our brain function and mood. Nutritional psychiatry is an emerging field exploring the role of diet in mental health. Diets rich in vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids promote brain health and contribute to the clarity and plasticity of cognitive functions. Thoughtful nutritional choices can complement our fitness endeavors, helping us to maintain an optimal balance between mind and body and reducing the occurrence of mood swings and mental fog.
Overcoming Common Barriers to Physical Activity
Despite the evident benefits of regular exercise, many individuals need help integrating it into their daily lives due to common barriers. Procrastination, lack of time, and waning motivation can quickly derail fitness aspirations. Overcoming these obstacles requires a strategic approach, such as setting specific, measurable goals and incorporating activities you enjoy into your routine. When exercise is convenient and enjoyable, it’s easier to stay committed. Additionally, enlisting the support of friends or joining fitness groups can provide the necessary accountability and encouragement to remain steadfast in pursuing your wellness objectives.
Fitness Across Different Life Stages
Physical exercise plays a differing yet critical role throughout the various stages of life. Children and teenagers benefit from activities that foster motor skills, social interaction, and healthy bone development. Conversely, adults may focus on maintaining a healthy weight and preventing chronic health conditions. For seniors, the emphasis often shifts to sustaining mobility, balance, and cognitive functions. Tailoring fitness activities to the needs of each life stage ensures that individuals can enjoy and thrive during every phase of their lives, focusing on longevity and quality rather than mere survival.
The Role of Community and Social Support in Fitness
A robust social support system can significantly enhance one’s commitment to an active lifestyle. Research has consistently shown that communal aspects, such as group exercises or working out with a partner, can lead to better adherence to a fitness routine and higher levels of enjoyment. A supportive environment fosters camaraderie, which in turn encourages consistency. It’s worth exploring different community-based fitness options, such as local running clubs, group classes, or online workout communities, especially for those who find solace and motivation in shared experiences and common goals.
The Future of Fitness and Mental Health
The nexus between fitness and mental health remains an area ripe for innovation. As technology evolves, we witness a paradigm shift in approaching health and wellness. From virtual reality workouts that provide immersive experiences to smart devices that track our every step, heartbeat, and calorie, the future holds a realm of possibilities for personalized health strategies. These advancements promise to make achieving fitness and mental health goals more accessible to a broader audience with varying needs and lifestyles, democratizing wellness for all.
Alycia and I survived our first DIY overseas trip without a guide and without her dad with us and I’m glad to say that everything went smoothly. Both our Air Asia flights were on time, despite warnings from my hubby, parents and other friends who had bad experiences of flight delays and cancellations with Air Asia. I thank God for blessing us with an enjoyable and trouble-free trip.
I’m also proud to say that Alycia is such a superb travel organizer. Her regular trips (local and overseas) with her uni mates have groomed her to be a travel-savvy and street smart girl. I just told her the dates that I wanted our trip to be, the time of our flights, where I wanted to visit, find a good and clean hotel and she did everything… with my credit card of course. She booked our hotel accommodation on booking.com. For our visits in Bangkok, purchase of Thailand SIM cards and transport cards, she booked them on Klook. She collected the SIM cards and transport cards at the Klook booth at the Bangkok airport.
We pre-paid our visit to the Mahanakhon SkyWalk and Royal Galaxy Chao Phraya river cruise via Klook. For our meals and shopping, Alycia googled for the most happening shopping malls and eateries and we covered at least 10 shopping malls in three days. We moved around mostly by Grab, BTS, Tuk Tuk car, and walked a lot under the scorching sun. I’m now a few shades tanner.
Alycia even wanted to try Grab motorbike but I was strongly against it for safety reasons. I thought that Sherilyn and Cass are dare devils who dare to try everything dangerous to get the adrenaline rush, but I discovered during this trip that my eldest is another fearless and daring young lady. She has transformed a lot from a timid and shy girl to an adventurous and sociable young lady ever since she went to university three years ago.
A day before our trip, Alycia found out that our dates in Bangkok coincided with the Songkran water festival. She warned me that we would get wet but I didn’t give much thought or worry to it. But I was wrong. We were both caught right smack in the middle of the festival and there was no way we could escape it as our hotel (Novotel Platinum) is located in a prime location, which was where the water fights would be held!
It was our very first time immersing in such a festival and we both had a culture shock. Everything that I had read from the news about Songkran in the past was now right in front of my eyes. We were both squirted with water and our faces were swiped with powder by strangers, who would target anyone with dry clothes and clean face. We had to cross an overhead bridge to get across to the other side where all the shopping malls were. The bridge was jam-packed with revellers and we could not even move. People were shooting water everywhere and at everyone. When we saw that the crowds were even bigger and more rowdy at the opposite side, we made a U-turn and returned to our hotel. We had our dinner at the hotel coffee house and then indulged in massage at the hotel.
To be continued…
Bic C is a supermarket where one can find a wide array of snacks. It’s a great place for tourists to shop for Thai snacks. But again, due to our currency depreciation, the things are not cheap at Big C. I’ve not seen anything that’s really cheap in Bangkok. Things are cheaper back home. Nonetheless, I bought a big bag of snacks and had to lug them back to KL on my hand-carry bag as some of the snacks are very fragile.
Becoming a parent is one of life’s most profound changes. The demands of caring for little ones can completely transform your lifestyle and priorities. It’s easy to lose touch with the person you were before having children. Reconnecting with your pre-kids self is important for your mental health and happiness, and ultimately benefits your whole family. Here are some tips for rediscovering the hobbies, interests and personality traits that give you joy outside of parenting.
Make Time for Old Hobbies
When you have young children at home, finding time for yourself can seem impossible. But carving out even small windows to engage in hobbies you enjoyed before becoming a parent is vital. Don’t wait for the perfect chunk of free time – it won’t come! Instead, identify ways to incorporate past passions into the margins of your day. Even 15-20 minutes of making art, playing guitar or reading can help centre you. Share your interests with your kids as they grow older.
Socialise with Child-Free Friends
It’s common for new parents’ social circles to shrink and consist mostly of other families. Make an effort to maintain friendships with people who don’t have children. Plan occasional adult-only outings to restaurants, shows or events that remind you of your pre-kids lifestyle. Your friends without kids can provide perspective and a sense of normalcy beyond the world of parenting.
Revisit Old Fashion Choices
Becoming a mum or dad often means adopting a more practical, low-maintenance personal style. Make space in your routine to reconnect with the fashion sense or beauty rituals you enjoyed before having kids. Wear the types of clothes and makeup that make you feel most authentically yourself, when practical. Even symbolic gestures like putting on an old favourite accessory can awaken a sense of your identity beyond parenthood.
Indulge Nostalgic Entertainment
Your TV shows, movies, books and music tastes likely look much different than in your child-free days. Set aside time to rewatch, reread or relisten to old favourites from your youth or that you associate with the person you were before becoming a parent. Feed your soul with entertainment that resonates with your core self. Share beloved classics with kids as appropriate.
Pursue New Interests Too
Reconnecting with your past doesn’t mean you must remain stuck in it. Carve out time to experiment with new hobbies, fashion choices and entertainment as well. Look for classes or groups that align with untapped interests. Adding novelty to your life helps prevent the monotony than can come with the daily parental grind. Bring a beginner’s mindset of curiosity and fun.
Work with a Coach
If you feel overwhelmed about rediscovering who you are beyond a parent, consider working with a parenting coach from The People Practice Group. A parent coach provides structure, accountability and guidance in setting and achieving goals related to your personal growth and fulfilment. Parenting coaching help you honour the demanding role of parenthood while reconnecting with needs beyond caring for your kids. Many offer remote sessions by phone or video chat.
The transition to parenthood often means parts of your pre-kids self recede into the background. But you are still a multidimensional person with a unique spirit to nurture. Reawakening and expressing your whole self – not just the parental role – allows you to bring more joy, presence and creativity to your family. Your journey will benefit your children as much as yourself.
Last week has been a whirlwind of many tasks to accomplish as my eldest daughter and I embark on a new adventure—planning our first-ever DIY trip to Bangkok. With Alycia’s semester break soon coming to an end, we seized the opportunity to have a short holiday in Bangkok, taking on the challenge of organizing every detail ourselves.
As someone who has frequented Thailand numerous times in the past, I thought planning this trip would be a breeze. However, diving into the nitty-gritty of trip planning proved to be more complex than I anticipated.
From scouring the internet for the best airfares with convenient departure and arrival times to securing a nice hotel (with good Google reviews) at tourist hotspots, there was no shortage of tasks to tackle in the span of less than ten days. Gone were the days of relying on travel agents and my parents to handle the logistics—this time, it was up to us to navigate the intricacies of travel planning.
As of today, I have paid for the air tickets and booked the hotel (Novotel Platinum Bangkok).
In addition to booking flights and accommodation, there were several other essentials to take care of before our departure. Making trips to the banks to activate overseas usage for credit and debit cards, online purchasing a SIM card for Thailand use, online purchase of BKK transport cards, exchanging currency and booking entrance tickets (via Klook) to the places that we are planning to visit in Thailand were just a few items on our lengthy to-do list. As the countdown to our departure date dwindled, the pressure was on me to ensure that everything was in place for a smooth and seamless journey.
Alycia has been traveling pretty regularly lately and she’s no stranger to booking tickets and hotel online. She’s also adept at using Apple Maps to bring me around.
However, amidst the excitement of planning our trip, a new challenge emerged—a recent requirement stipulated by the Thai Embassy mandating travelers to carry a minimum of 15,000 Thai Baht (around RM2k) per person in cash upon entry into Thailand as proof of financial ability. This unexpected hurdle added an extra layer of complexity to our preparations, prompting concerns about compliance and logistics. I have since checked with friends who had just returned from Bangkok and all of them told me that they were not checked by the Immigration staff in Bangkok on the amount of cash that they brought in, which was less than the stipulated amount. It seems that the Immigration staff would conduct random checks on travelers.
As departure day draws near, my thoughts turn to my youngest daughter, Cass, who will be home alone when she returns from school in the afternoon. If hubby is busy with work, Cass will have to settle lunch on her own. Cass will also have to learn how to operate the washing machine and do other house chores during my absence. Being the youngest and not one who would willingly do house chores, I hope that she will learn to shoulder responsibilities during my absence.
On top of all these, my other big worry is Haru. Sherilyn is tasked to feed Haru breakfast and Cass has to take care of the dinner. Sherilyn will have to wake up earlier in the morning to feed Haru before rushing off to college. And both of them will have to take turns cleaning the litter box. I hope that these two busy girls will remember to feed Haru and take good care of their fur sister. I am surely going to send them lots of reminders when I am in Bangkok 😜
Despite the uncertainties and challenges that lie ahead, I’m filled with a sense of anticipation and optimism for the journey ahead.
With faith, determination, and a spirit of adventure, I have no qualms that Alycia and I will navigate Bangkok with ease and return home with hearts full of cherished memories. Here’s to new beginnings, unexpected challenges, and the joy of discovery that awaits us in the Land of Smiles. Wish us luck!
This past week has been a whirlwind of activity, filled with everything from passport renewals to last-minute travel changes. To top it all off, I was down with a cold and a blocked nose, no thanks to the flu bugs from the mil and Sherilyn.
The week kicked off with a mission to renew my passport, a crucial step in preparing for an upcoming overseas holiday. However, the journey to the Immigration Department was not without its challenges. Despite waking up early on Monday and attempting to secure a queue number via the QMS app on my phone, I found myself thwarted by the limited availability of slots. By 6.30am, the numbers for all three UTC offices (Pudu, Keramat and Sentul) were already snapped up. I then enlisted the help of Alycia the following morning to help me stay glued to the phone to grab a queue number, and after a few hiccups, we managed to secure a spot at UTC Keramat, albeit not the location I initially intended. Hubby and I were hoping to get a queue number at UTC Pudu.
Fortunately, the waiting time at UTC Keramat was pretty fast. When we arrived at 8.30 a.m., the number that was called out was 9005 and my number was 9032, while hubby’s number was 9064. Within one hour, my passport was done and collected. I am impressed with the efficiency of the staff.
With passports in hand, the focus now shifted to planning our holiday. Alycia was eager to make the most of her semester break, and together we scoured for overseas tours. Meanwhile, amidst the hustle and bustle, I lent a helping hand to my mother-in-law as she prepared for her journey to Hong Kong and London. She will be away for four months. From organizing travel insurance to running last-minute errands for her, it was a flurry of activity before her departure. Alycia also went to Hong Kong, albeit on a different flight from her grandma. Alycia took Air Asia while the mil boarded Cathay Pacific, an hour difference in take-off time. Alycia will be spending a week in Hong Kong.
As plans for our trip began to take shape, fate threw us a curveball. A visit to the travel agency on Wednesday to book our Seoul trip ended in dismay as soaring airfares dashed our hopes of a getaway within my budget (RM12k for the entire trip). When the travel agency staff quoted me the price for two pax to Seoul, Korea a few days ago, it was about RM9k. But a few days later, the air fare shot up and now the price went up to about RM16k for the two of us. This is only for a 4D 3N stay in Seoul. It’s a crazy price to pay as in essence, we only have two full days in Seoul.
After we left the travel agency office, we walked to Pavillion KL for lunch at Ichiban. Alycia led the way with the help of Apple Maps, the default map system for iPhone. She used Apple Maps to help her get around Singapore when she was there recently for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert.
Despite our best efforts to find alternative options at Air Asia, the steep increase in prices during peak season left us reeling. The Air Asia’s flights are all at odd hours or with a stopover in Bangkok. April is spring time in Korea with sakura in full bloom and one of the best times to visit, thus the soar in air fare prices. After much deliberation and consultation with my parents and hubby, a spontaneous decision was made to switch gears and opt for Bangkok instead. I am still determined to go to Korea but will have to do so during non-peak months.
I have tasked Alycia to do the homework of searching for hotels near the places that we plan to visit, restaurants, and other essential information needed for our holiday in Bangkok for 3 nights and 4 days. She’s now in Hong Kong and very eager to do the homework coz it’s something that’s fun.
Today, as I celebrate my 51st birthday, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of events that transpired throughout the week. Despite the challenges and unexpected changes, there’s a sense of excitement and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. With plans to book our air tickets to Bangkok and finalize accommodation in the coming days, I’m reminded that life’s greatest adventures often begin with a leap of faith and a willingness to embrace the unknown.
Embarking on a journey toward wellness is often a step-by-step process, and for me, joining a yoga class has long been a dream waiting to be realized. After years of contemplation, last Thursday marked a significant milestone as I finally took the plunge and attended my trial class for Iyengar yoga. It was a moment of fulfillment, ticking off a cherished item from my bucket list.
My initial intention was to explore flow yoga, drawn to its dynamic movements and graceful transitions. However, timing and logistical challenges such as parking woes and traffic congestion led me to reconsider, ultimately opting for Iyengar yoga, which offered morning classes in a more accessible location with ample parking spaces.
Iyengar yoga, a form of hatha yoga, focuses on precise alignment and technique, emphasizing quality over quantity in each movement. Through slow, deliberate poses and controlled breathing, I discovered a practice that not only strengthens the body but also cultivates flexibility and improves posture.
During my trial class, I experienced firsthand the benefits of Iyengar yoga as my muscles were gently stretched and strengthened. The following day, I welcomed the pleasant ache in my muscles—a sign of progress and growth within my practice.
I opted for walk-in classes as this allows me the flexibility to attend sessions according to my schedule, albeit at a slightly higher fee of RM40 per session. While committing to weekly classes may be challenging, I am committed to prioritizing my well-being by making time for yoga whenever possible.
As I eagerly anticipate my second class tomorrow—a paid session—I reflect on the sense of accomplishment that accompanies each step forward in my wellness journey. Yoga has become more than just a physical practice; it’s a path toward holistic well-being and self-discovery.
And as I continue to explore the depths of yoga, another item on my bucket list is on the brink of becoming a reality—an overseas holiday. While details remain under wraps until my passport renewal is complete, the anticipation of embarking on this adventure fills me with excitement and anticipation.
In the crowded personal care market, the allure of beauty often overshadows the potential impact these items can have on our health and wellness. The array of options is endless, from skincare potions promising eternal youth to hair care elixirs guaranteeing luscious locks.
Statista claims the United States is poised to witness significant growth in the Beauty & Personal Care market. The expected revenue is estimated to reach US$100.30 billion in 2024. On an individual level, this translates to an average expenditure of US$293.30 per person. Moreover, online sales are projected to contribute substantially to approximately 27.9% of the total revenue by 2024.
Understanding the industry’s magnitude is crucial as we explore the impact of personal care products on health. This understanding is crucial for consumers and society at large. Remember that sometimes, beneath the glossy packaging lies a complex landscape of ingredients that can profoundly influence our bodies and the environment.
In this article, we explore the intricate relationship between personal care products and our health and well-being.
Common Ingredients in Personal Care Products
The world of personal care products can be complex, filled with unfamiliar terms and a dizzying array of ingredients. But beneath the fancy names lie some basic categories that play essential roles in how these products function. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most common ones:
Base Ingredients: These form the foundation of the product, making up the bulk. Water is king here, but other elements like oils and waxes can also be used.
Functional Ingredients: These are the workhorses that target specific concerns. For example, sunscreens contain UV filters to protect skin, while moisturizers might contain hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate.
Emollients: These are like skin soothers. They soften and smooth the skin, leaving a pleasant feel. Common emollients include shea butter and mineral oil.
Surfactants: These are the cleaning powerhouses in shampoos, soaps, and facial cleansers. They help water and oil mix, washing away dirt and grime.
Preservatives: These unsung heroes prevent bacteria and mold growth, ensuring the safety and longevity of your products.
Fragrances and Dyes: These add to the sensory experience — the pleasant scents and colors we associate with personal care products.
Understanding these basic categories can empower you to make more informed choices when navigating the vast array of personal care options.
Skin Care Products
While skincare offers a path to healthy, glowing skin, it’s important to be mindful of the ingredients lurking within some products. Certain chemicals, while promoting specific benefits, can have unintended consequences.
Sulfates: These cleansing agents, often in shampoos and face washes, can strip away natural moisture, causing dryness and irritation.
Parabens: Often used as preservatives, parabens have been linked to potential hormonal disruptions, although research is ongoing. Paraben-free options are readily available for those seeking a more cautious approach.
Fragrances: The delightful scents we associate with skincare can sometimes be a mask for a multitude of chemicals. These can trigger allergies or sensitivities, causing redness, itching, and inflammation.
Retinol: A powerful anti-aging ingredient, retinol can be highly effective but potentially irritating, especially for sensitive skin. Patch testing and following proper application guidelines are crucial.
Healthline recommendsavoiding certain ingredients in personal care products. These include oxybenzone, phthalates, formaldehyde, methyl and propyl parabens, PEGs (polyethylene glycols), and aluminum. These ingredients range from common allergens to potential carcinogens, with some linked to hormonal disruption.
Research on some ingredients is limited, and findings on others are mixed. It’s important to note that phthalates and certain parabens have been associated with hormonal disruption, while others may pose risks of carcinogenicity or skin irritation.
Hair Care Products
The health of our hair goes beyond just aesthetics. Strong, healthy hair reflects overall well-being, with factors like nutrition and stress playing a significant role. Hair care products can play a crucial part in supporting healthy hair growth and scalp health.
Shampoos and conditioners cleanse the scalp, remove dirt and styling product buildup, and replenish moisture. However, some ingredients commonly found in hair care products can be detrimental. Sulfates, while effective cleansers, can be overly stripping, leading to dryness and irritation. Silicones, often used to provide shine and manageability, can cause buildup over time, weighing down hair and hindering healthy growth.
One area of concern within hair care products is the use of chemicals in hair straightening treatments. Studies suggest a possible link between certain chemicals found in hair straighteners, relaxers, and similar products, states TorHoerman Law.
These chemicals may be associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, and even ovarian cancer in some cases. These chemicals, including phthalates and formaldehyde, break down the hair’s bonds and achieve a straighter style.
Thehair straightener cancer lawsuit alleges that manufacturers didn’t properly warn consumers about the potential risks. The lawsuits allege that companies knew of risks but sold products without warnings.
Though the scientific evidence is evolving, it underscores the need for consumers to prioritize safer hair care products.
Body Care Products
Body washes, lotions, and deodorants are staples in most self-care routines. But their benefits extend far beyond simply cleansing and masking odor. The ingredients in these products can interact with the skin’s microbiome, influencing not just surface health but potentially impacting overall well-being.
Antibacterial Soaps: While effective at eliminating bacteria, these products can disrupt the delicate balance of the skin’s microbiome. Opting for gentle cleansers that preserve this balance can promote healthier skin in the long run.
Deodorants vs. Antiperspirants: Traditional antiperspirants often contain aluminum, which can clog sweat glands and potentially interfere with the body’s natural detoxification process. Deodorants, on the other hand, simply neutralize odor-causing bacteria. Choosing natural deodorants or aluminum-free antiperspirants can be a healthier option.
Moisturizers and Lotions: These products not only hydrate the skin but can also create a protective barrier against environmental irritants. Look for formulas rich in emollients and humectants, which attract and retain moisture, leaving skin feeling soft and supple.
Environmental Impact
While we focus on the impact of personal care products on our health, it’s crucial to consider the bigger picture. This includes evaluating the industry’s environmental footprint. Our self-care choices can have a ripple effect, influencing the planet’s health.
Packaging Waste: The personal care industry generates a staggering amount of plastic waste yearly. Much of this packaging, from shampoo bottles to lotion tubes, ends up in landfills or pollutes our oceans.
Microplastics: Many exfoliating products contain tiny plastic beads that wash down the drain and contribute to microplastic pollution in our waterways. These microplastics are ingested by marine life and can work their way up the food chain, potentially harming human health.
Chemical Runoff: The ingredients used in personal care products can enter our water systems through wastewater treatment plants. Some chemicals, like certain sunscreens, can harm aquatic ecosystems like coral reefs.
According to CleanHub, packaging waste is the biggest environmental hurdle for the beauty industry. A staggering120 billion pieces of packaging are produced annually, with a concerning 95% ending up discarded. It translates to a significant environmental burden, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
Tips for Safer Products Choices
With so many personal care products lining the shelves, navigating towards safer options can feel overwhelming. But fret not! Here are some simple tips to empower your self-care routine:
Embrace Less is More: Simplify your routine by opting for multi-tasking products that address multiple concerns. It reduces overall product usage and potential exposure to various ingredients.
Befriend the Ingredient List: Familiarize yourself with common ingredients and research those you’re unsure about. Look for products free from harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates, which have been linked to potential health concerns.
Seek Certifications: Look for certifications from independent organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) or B Corporation. These certifications indicate the brand’s commitment to safer ingredients and sustainable practices.
Embrace Natural Alternatives: Explore natural alternatives for common products. Consider DIY options using natural ingredients like coconut oil for hair care or baking soda for deodorant. Patch test any new product before full application to avoid irritation.
Cultivating Wellness Through Informed Choices
The world of personal care products extends far beyond achieving flawless complexion or bouncy curls. Our choices have the power to influence not just how we look but also how we feel and how we impact the environment.
By understanding the ingredients we put in our bodies and their impact on our microbiome, we can make informed decisions. This knowledge also helps us consider the potential environmental consequences, promoting true well-being.
Next time you choose a product, remember: it’s about nurturing wellness from within as much as enhancing outer beauty.
Life as a parent is a beautiful whirlwind of emotions, filled with moments that make our hearts swell with pride. Here are some updates on my daughters, each carving their unique paths in life.
Cass, my resilient figure skater, had a big day today. Rising with the sun at 6 am, her dad sent her to the skating rink before 7 am for her figure skating test – first with pre-test practice and then the actual test. Hours of practice and dedication culminated in a successful outcome – she passed her fourth test! Despite the early mornings and rigorous training regimen, Cass’s passion for figure skating remains unwavering. Her commitment to two to three times per week on-ice practice, coupled with daily off-ice sessions at the gym and at home, is a testament to her dedication and love for the sport. She celebrated her passing with pizza, chips, and Bundaberg root beer, all courtesy of her loving grandma.
Meanwhile, Alycia, my spontaneous adventurer, surprised us all with an impromptu decision to jet off to Hong Kong with her grandma. With her semester break looming and no concrete plans in sight, she seized the opportunity for a spontaneous holiday. Just like that, she booked her air tickets late last night, ready to embark on a week-long adventure in the vibrant city in eleven days, adding yet another stamp to her growing passport. It will be her fourth time in Hong Kong. She will fly back to KL on her own after a week’s stay in Hong Kong while her grandma will fly to London to visit her eldest daughter.
And that’s not all – Alycia’s travel bug doesn’t stop there. She’s also gearing up for a train journey to Perlis and then to Penang with her friends this weekend. This girl is living her best life!
As for Sherilyn, my thoughtful planner, she’s gearing up for a getaway of her own. With her semester break in full swing, she’s eagerly anticipating a trip to Penang with her friends next week. However, the temptation looms as Alycia’s escapades in Hong Kong beckon. Despite her desire to join her sister on this exciting adventure, Sherilyn understands the importance of financial responsibility. Having recently purchased an iPhone 14 that costs over RM3k with my assistance, she’s diligently saving up to repay me in ten installments. It’s a lesson in financial accountability that she’s taking to heart, even if it means missing out on a holiday abroad.
As I reflect on these updates, I’m filled with a sense of pride and admiration for my daughters. Each one embodies their unique blend of passion, spontaneity, and responsibility, carving out their paths in life with unwavering determination.
Over the last few years, Pilates has emerged as a powerful ally for those seeking a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being. This low-impact exercise system, developed in the 20th century, has gained immense popularity worldwide, attracting individuals from all walks of life. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a newcomer to the world of fitness, Pilates offers a unique blend of strength, flexibility, and mindfulness that can transform your body and mind.
Core Strength and Stability
One of the primary focuses of Pilates is on building a strong and stable core. By engaging the deep abdominal muscles, along with the muscles of the back and pelvic floor, Pilates helps create a solid foundation for all movements. This core stability not only improves posture and reduces the risk of injury but also enhances overall athletic performance and everyday functional movements.
Flexibility and Mobility
Pilates emphasises controlled movements and stretching, which can improve flexibility and joint mobility. The exercises target specific muscle groups, lengthening and strengthening them simultaneously. This balanced approach can alleviate muscle tightness and tension, reducing the risk of injuries and promoting a greater range of motion in daily activities.
Mind-Body Connection
Unlike many traditional exercise routines, Pilates places a strong emphasis on mindfulness and breath control. By synchronising movement with breath, practitioners develop a heightened awareness of their bodies, fostering a deeper connection between the physical and mental aspects of their being. This mind-body integration can reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance overall well-being.

Versatility and Adaptability

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced practitioner, young or old, an athlete or seeking rehabilitation, Pilates can be tailored to suit your individual needs and goals. Modifications and variations allow individuals of all fitness levels to participate and progress at their own pace, ensuring a safe and effective workout.
Unlocking the health rewards of Pilates is a journey that promises to transform not only your physical well-being but also your mental and emotional state. By combining strength, flexibility, and mindfulness, Pilates offers a holistic approach to fitness that can benefit individuals of all ages and abilities.
Sundays are a cherished time for our family, marked by moments of togetherness and indulgence in good food. Last Sunday was no exception, as hubby treated us to a surprise family lunch that took us on a journey down memory lane and tantalized our taste buds in equal measure.
This time, we embarked on our usual Sunday lunch with no clue as to our destination. It wasn’t until we arrived at Concorde Hotel that the mystery unfolded, evoking fond memories of our wedding day almost 24 years ago, when we celebrated our union at this very hotel in May 2000. I thought that hubby was pulling my leg when he told me that he was bringing us to Concorde Hotel for Dim Sum. We have not gone to a hotel for lunch for eons and in recent years, we hardly dine in hotels.
Stepping into Xin Cuisine, the Chinese restaurant nestled in the lobby of Concorde Hotel, we were greeted by the familiar sights and smells of dim sum – a nod to our wedding dinner held in the same venue.
True to form, the dim sum at Xin Cuisine proved to be a feast for the senses, with each bite bursting with flavor and tradition. From delicate dumplings to crispy spring rolls, the quality of the food remained as impeccable as ever. This is the reason why we chose to have our wedding at Xin Cuisine because of the quality of the food served.
After savoring our dim sum goodness, hubby surprised us once again by whisking us off to Three Years Old for coffee and cake. As we lounged in the cozy ambiance of the café, the girls indulged in a trio of sliced cakes, accompanied by steaming cups of gourmet coffee.
Our joyous afternoon took an unexpected turn when Sherilyn experienced an allergic reaction, reminiscent of a previous bout of hives that landed her in the hospital in June last year. She was at her dance studio for class when this happened, so she walked to a nearby pharmacy to get medicine to tame the allergy. We realized that the culprit may have been the prawns consumed during our dim sum earlier.
Reflecting on Sherilyn’s allergy history, we came to the sobering realization that while she may not have a direct allergy to prawns, certain chemicals used in their processing could trigger adverse reactions. Most of the time, eating prawns would cause no allergy but sometimes, she would get an itch in her mouth and lips and the worst case was a full-blown hives attack requiring hospitalization in June last year. Thankfully, with swift intervention, the medication managed to stave off a full-blown hives attack, sparing Sherilyn from further discomfort.
We planned to eat at our friend’s tai chow restaurant but there was a cloudburst and the only place that we could conveniently go to without getting wet and braving traffic congestion is the Japanese restaurant at our condo lobby. We love eating at this restaurant but we seldom go to this restaurant now as we have tried almost every item on their menu after living in this condo for almost 16 years. This Japanese restaurant has been around for more than two decades. The owners’ two daughters are the same age as Alycia and Sherilyn. Our girls and their girls grew up together and took swim lessons together when they were younger.
This is what we indulged in, just the three of us – hubby, Cass and me. Alycia was in Singapore to attend Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert, Sherilyn was at a dance rehearsal, and the mil was at another dinner.
These days we don’t cook as frequently as we used to when the girls were younger. During the girls’ growing up years, we used to cook five to six times a week. Twice to thrice a day. Those were the days when we had the luxury of live-in helpers. I would plan the meals weekly, hubby would do the marketing and our helpers would execute the menu. When the mil was around, she would do the marketing and cook. When the girls were younger, the mil stayed in Hong Kong and Auckland most of the time as my nephews and niece were still toddlers and the mil was always overseas to take care of her daughters’ babies.
I really enjoyed those days when I needn’t have to do much house chores. Bless our helpers for giving us so much relief.
Fast forward years later and now our girls are in university and high school respectively. The two older girls do not have dinner at home regularly. Cass only eats one meal a day and my dinner is usually by 4pm, together with Cass when she comes home from school. On most days, there’s food from hubby’s kitchen. Thus, we don’t cook much these days. When the momentum to cook is lost, we tend to get lazy to cook. But who cares, right? As long as we enjoy our food and are happy, that’s good enough. 😋

Today, Alycia experienced a heart-stopping moment that sent waves of panic through our household. With her eagerly anticipated trip to Singapore to attend Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert looming on the horizon, the last thing she expected was to face a potential nightmare.
After a long day at university, Alycia made a detour to Sunway Pyramid to exchange some Singaporean currency. Little did she know that this seemingly routine errand would lead to a frantic search for her identity card, her lifeline amid her upcoming adventure. Without her IC, she would not have been able to board the flight to Singapore on Saturday morning or enter Singapore by land.
As Alycia stepped through the threshold of our home, her panicked voice filled the air as she confessed to losing her identity card. My heart sank as I watched her in distress, knowing the implications of such a loss on her impending trip. With a calm demeanor, I guided her through the steps of retracing her movements, urging her to remain composed amidst the chaos.
First, we reached out to the money changer where she had conducted her transaction, hoping against hope that her identity card was still there. Despite our efforts, the staff claimed no knowledge of her missing card, plunging Alycia deeper into despair.
Alycia also made a call to the Lost & Found Dept. to inquire about her lost IC. While there was a lost IC but it wasn’t hers.
Refusing to concede defeat, I suggested contacting the security department of Sunway Pyramid to review the CCTV footage from the time of her visit to the money changer counter. As Alycia’s high school best friend Elly, a beacon of support and solidarity, rushed to her aid, I could only pray for a swift resolution to this nerve-wracking ordeal. Thank God Elly was still in the university, which is just a 10-15 minute walk to Sunway Pyramid via a connecting bridge. Elly rushed to the money changer counter.
With bated breath, Alycia awaited news of any potential sightings of her lost identity card. The weight of uncertainty hung heavy in the air, threatening to shatter her childhood dreams of attending the concert she had long awaited.
Then, like a beacon of hope in the darkness, Elly delivered the news we had been desperately hoping for – Alycia’s identity card had been found at the money changer. Relief washed over us like a tidal wave as Alycia’s tears of anguish gave way to tears of gratitude and joy.
Praise the Lord!
As Alycia dashed to Sunway Pyramid to reclaim her lost identity card and to have dinner with Elly afterward, I couldn’t help but marvel at the resilience and determination she displayed in the face of adversity. As of typing this post, Alycia is still not back home yet. She’s still having dinner with Elly, with the dinner on Alycia to thank her bestie for helping her out.
Alycia’s heart-stopping moment became a lesson in resilience, resourcefulness, and gratitude. As she prepares to embark on her journey to Singapore, I have no doubt that she will carry this experience with her for life, ensuring she remains ever-vigilant and extra careful with important documents and belongings. Just one moment of neglect can be a life time of regret!
Today is the last Sunday of February 2024. And just in the blink of an eye, Chinese New Year is over and February is coming to an end. February has always been an eventful month with Chinese New Year and my dreaded yearly medical check-up and pap smear procedure. Tomorrow will be my appointment at my gynae’s clinic for pap smear, ultrasound and transvaginal scan. Never liked these scans and test 🤪. I still have some issues that need monitoring.
Lunch today is at Wai Kee, our favorite Hakka tai chow style restaurant. The chef is a lady in her 70s, helming the kitchen for decades. I’m always amazed with her grit, stamina and vitality for shouldering the challenging job of being the head chef in the super hot kitchen.
My latest fitness tracker ~ a new Xiaomi Mibro C2 smart watch from Shopee. Love this watch with plenty of cool & cute watch faces to choose from. The battery (magnetic charging) is very long lasting too. It comes with many functions but I only track my steps and heart rate. It’s a great smart watch for someone who is obsessed with counting their daily steps 🏃♀️ The best part is it only costs RM129 with free shipping and a RM10 shop voucher. I hope I will remember to remove it from my shorts pocket before putting my shorts into the washer. My Fitbit conked out as it went into the washer several times 🤪
