Sherilyn Wins Gold in Get The Beat Dance Competition

Today has been an exciting day for Sherilyn, as she just won two prestigious medals at the Get The Beat (GTB) dance competition! GTB is an internationally touring dance competition, and this marks Sherilyn’s second time shining on their stage. Her first victory came six years ago when she was just 13 years old, making this win even more special.

In the hip hop category for her age group, Sherilyn wowed the judges and secured a gold medal. She didn’t stop there—she clinched a Double Platinum medal in her Contemporary dance performance.

The day wasn’t without its hiccups, though. Sherilyn accidentally left her dance studio jacket behind at home, and with little time to spare before her performance at the PJ Performing Arts Centre, she ordered a Grab bike driver to get the jacket from home. I was eating breakfast half way and had to hurriedly change and bring the jacket down to the Grab driver. Despite the small drama, she stayed focused and delivered stellar performances on stage.

Today’s achievement has certainly made her a very happy camper, and as always, we’re incredibly proud of her dedication, passion, and hard work.

Leslie Cheung’s 20th Death Anniversary – Will You Remember Me Flash Mob @ Pavillion Bukit Jalil

Sherilyn was one of the dancers of a flash mob dance organized by Universal Music Hong Kong and held at Pavillion Bukit Jalil on Saturday, 25 March 2023. The event was to commemorate the passing of Leslie Cheung 20 years ago on 1 April 2003. Her dance studio, 1119 Dance Studio/1119 Entertainment, was engaged to provide dancers for the flash mob.

The dancers boogied to Leslie’s most popular hits donned in retro clothes of Leslie Cheung’s era/’80s. Sherilyn appeared in the song “Thanksx4 Monica”.

I was there to watch the flash mob and to give moral support to my dancer, while Cass was at the skating rink for figure skating practice. I just couldn’t stop singing along to the song “Thanksx4 Monica” during the flash mob. This song reminds me of my carefree and happy teenage years in the mid 1980s. My elder brother would jam to this song day and night on his mini compo. Leslie’s suicide came as a big shocker to me and to the entire world. He was one of my favorite TVB ‘leng jai’ actors and singers. My friends and I used to swoon over him.

Can you spot Sherilyn? She’s with a bandana and in white attire with a yellow singlet over.
You should be able to spot Sherilyn in this photo.

Here’s the video of the flash mob on You Tube. To all the fans of Leslie Cheung, enjoy the dance and songs 💓

Our Dancing Baker

I have a vision for our middle child. As she has talents in baking, cooking and dancing, I told her that she should open a cafe-cum-dance center in future. The ground floor shop lot would ideally be a cafe and the first floor, a dance school. While she manages the cafe and teaches dancing, I’ll be the cashier at the cafe. The cafe would serve as the perfect waiting place for parents after they drop off their kids for dance classes. There’ll be cakes, healthy smoothies, juices, and mains on the menu. I’ve also encouraged her to take up a Degree in Business Management so that she can effectively manage her businesses.

But I doubt that this will come true as she has something else on her mind, which is remotely related to F&B and business. Oh well, we’ll see what God’s plans are for her  😇

Yesterday our teenage baker baked a lemon meringue cake. She has a thing with baking really complicated cakes. Never one who would bake a good old butter cake or a classic banana cake, she’d only choose recipes that involve 101 steps! I’ve told her many times that I crave for a good old plain orange cake or banana cake but she said NO, she would only bake cafe-style cakes!  🙄

The lemon meringue cake involves multiple complicated steps. First is the preparation of the lemon curd. Then the baking of 3 lemon sponge cakes. Next, preparation of the meringue. And finally assembling of the cake and blowtorching the meringue to create a light brown toast color.

A total of 12 eggs and 8 lemons were used. It’s a pretty costly cake!

In the process of prepping the cake, a snafu happened. While she was removing one of the sponge cakes from the oven, she accidentally dropped the cake on the floor! It was a mess but she quickly salvaged the cake and the top part of the cake was smashed on the floor! Luckily OCD me had just mopped the floor and since the floor was clean, the both of us scooped up the cake from the floor and stuffed it into our mouths… and ROTFL while at it 😆 .

She had so much fun blowtorching the meringue on the cake!
Picture perfect, cafe-style cake. All self-taught from watching You Tube tutorials.
Very lemony and yummy! But I find it a tad sweet, though she reduced the amount of sugar. I told her to reduce more sugar the next time she bakes this cake again.

This video is Sherilyn’s first You Tube dance cover, produced by her dance school. The filming was postponed umpteen times since last year due to the rising Covid cases and only shot 3 weeks ago at Tamarind Square, Putrajaya. She worked really hard to get into the dance group.

If you can’t spot her, she’s the one in cropped blue blazer and tennis skirt. She’s the shortest in the squad (and youngest) and has to wear soles lift pads to give her a slight boost in her height 😆

Our dancer’s next project is another dance competition in 2 weeks and there will be lots of practices with her group mates in the coming days.

Get The Beat World Tour 2019

Our dancing queen’s haul in the Get The Beat (GTB) Asia dance competition held on Sunday, 25 August 2019 was champion, 2nd and 5th placing in the student’s choreography, jazz and solo contemporary (under 14 category).

With this, she’s now qualified for the world finals to be held in Bangkok from 18 – 22 December 2019.  But her dad and I don’t think that she’ll be going as we want her to focus in her studies.  Lately she’s been spending too much time partaking in all sorts of competitions and dancing. We’re extremely proud of her prowess and burning passion in dancing but we feel that studies should be above dancing.

Even the day before the competition, Sherilyn had to be in school at 7 a.m. to perform in a Chinese cultural dance in a Merdeka Day celebration. She’s spent every night practising at the gym till 10 p.m. for the GTB competition and during the weekends and holidays, her team mates from school came over to practise the Chinese dance.

Would you believe it if I told you that our dancing queen choreographed for her school’s Chinese cultural dance? Sherilyn stopped going to the dance studio for lessons several months ago as I think she needs a dance teacher who can teach her more advanced techniques and help her to raise her game.

Enjoy the photos…

My dancing queen has definitely come a long way from a 3+ year old chubby cheeked girl who started attending ballet classes to a determined 14-year old who choreographs her own dance ❤️

Berjaya Teen Star Challenge 2019

My dancing queen registered herself in the Berjaya Teen Star Challenge 2018 audition last year and ‘recruited’ 2 of her classmates to be in her dance team. She choreographed the dance herself.  During the audition, one of her friends forgot the steps – they didn’t make it. Sherilyn vowed to try again the following year, though her dad and I didn’t fully encourage her to.

This year, again she registered herself in the 2019 audition, representing her school. I’ve been telling her that it’s a waste of her time participating in so many dance competitions and she should instead be spending more time on her studies. With only 2 weeks to go before the audition, she trained with D in school almost everyday. D came to our condo during the weekends to practise at our  condo gym.

The audition was held last Saturday. The two girls took Grab to Berjaya Time Square, with D’s mother tagging along.  They audition went pretty well but the judges weren’t too satisfied with D’s steps. Can’t blame D as she only had 2 weeks of practice. Moreover, D does not have much experience in modern dance. She’s a cultural dancer in school but it’s pretty different from modern dance.

The judge told Sherilyn in private that she had two choices:
1. to find another partner OR
2. her partner has to work on the flaws and to come back the next day (Sunday) for the final audition.

When they returned from the audition, they continued practising and perfecting the steps. With only a few more hours to go before the next audition, there was not much that they could do but to try and hope for the best. Sherilyn who choreographed the dance had to change some of the steps at the eleventh hour.

Sherilyn didn’t even tell me that she and her partner got through the second audition to emerge top 40 in Malaysia (modern dance category) to compete in the Berjaya Teen Star Challenge until I Whatsapped her while she was still at the audition venue!

Sherilyn should have named her team The Dimple Girls instead as both she and her friend have the sweetest and deepest dimples on both sides of their cheeks!

After Hari Raya, all the contestants who got through the audition have to attend a workshop at Colmar Tropicale, Berjaya Hills @ Bukit Tinggi for a short training session on how to perfect their showmanship before the prelims to be held in three months.

When it comes to things that interest her like dancing, martial arts, athletics and baking, Sherilyn’s discipline and focus are impeccable.  This fearless girl loves participating in competitions too.  She woke up very early on her own on both days to get ready – prepped her own breakfast, did her makeup and hair herself and ordered Grab herself. She’s naturally a born leader, in areas that pique her passion, which are all right-brain dominated!
