Finally, Something That Baby Loves To Eat

I was cracking my head again yesterday morning, trying to whip up something interesting for Baby to eat. She now dislikes porridge and has not been eating it for 2 weeks. Everything that she used to love to eat, she now hates it. Her recent bout of cold and flu have also suppressed her appetite. I had cooked some tomato omelette for Baby for lunch, together with a pot of old cucumber soup. My mil had cooked a big pot of whatever-in-the-fridge pasta. She used whatever ingredients that she could find in the fridge and freezer to fry the pasta and it was really delicious. My 2 gals loved it and when I let Baby try a piece of the macaroni, to my surprise, she loved it! And she kept screaming for more and more and more and boy oh boy was I glad that she’s finally found something that she loved to eat.

The whatever-in-the-fridge pasta cooked with macaroni, fish (meant for Baby’s porridge but since she has stopped eating porridge, we had a surplus of fish in the freezer), fishballs (a few-day old leftover), cabbage (also over a week old but still looked fresh), shredded carrot (leftover too), prawns, big onions, tomatoes and pasta sauce.

Baby loved eating the macaroni by holding it, uncut. She ate about 7-8 pieces of macaroni and wanted more but I stopped feeding her for fear that she would puke.  She had it both for lunch and dinner. I rinsed the macaroni briefly with hot water to get rid of excess oil, salt and sauce.

How To Get Kids To Eat Food They Dislike

My mil made some sushi for the gals last week since they’ve been badgering daddy to bring them to the Japanese restaurant for sushi. The gals liked them so much that my mil made another batch of sushi the following day. This time, she concealed steamed pumpkin in the sushi. My gals hate pumpkin and would never eat them but when the pumpkin was hidden in the sushi, ho ho ho ho, they walloped all the sushi and licked the platter clean! Even Sherilyn who hates rice and meat gobbled down the sushi… FUSS-FREE!

Sushi with pumpkin, homemade char siew, Japanese cucumber, fried eggs and Japanese mayonaise.

Check out my other blog to see how my mil made homemade char siew sushi.

Baby C’s Stash Of Biscuits… And The Throes Of Spoon-Feeding Her Formula

Here are Baby C’s stash of biscuits:

There are more but not in this pic …. butter animal biscuits from Marks and Spencer, Pureen baby biscuits, Heinz orange-flavored rusks, Heinz cheese sticks, plain cream crackers, organic wholewheat crackers and much more. Baby used to get bored with the same biscuit after eating them a few days straight in a row.  Now I offer her a different type of biscuit everyday. On some days when there is fresh bread or buns, she will eat bread or buns. On some days, I will cut bread into strips and toast them lightly.

Giving Baby a biscuit, a cookie or a toast is one of the ways to keep her still on her highchair while I spoon-feed her Vanilla-flavored Pediasure…. and that’s only 2-3 ounces at each feeding…. which would take me between half an hour to an hour to coax her to drink… with lots of entertainement to distract her.  And I have to do this 4 times a day!  So can you imagine how tiring and stressful my days are these days, doing nothing much but feeding Baby her formula and her meals, just so she can catch up on her weight….  *loooooooooooooooooooong sigh*

*bow bow*  Give a clap to this devoted mummy LOL!

Note to Baby C : Cassandra, each day as I break my back washing your bum after you poo poo, each time as I break my back spoon-feeding you formula, each time as I coax you to drink water so that you have enough fluids to flush out those pesky bugs from your urinary tract, each time I sniff your soiled diaper to check if there’s any foul smell, each time I break my back trying to collect your pee,  each day as I crack my head to find ways to entertain and distract you just so you will drink your formula and eat your antibiotics…. I will tell you to be really good to mummy when you grow up.  As you are reading this now Cassandra, I hope this post has touched you my sweetie-pie.   You better be good to mummy… always!

Cute Pokemon Mac N Cheese

This is the Pokemon mac n cheese that I bought from Jaya Grocer, which I cooked yesterday:

It’s pretty simple to prepare. First, boil the macaroni until soft. Drain the water. Add in the powdered cheese, some butter and fresh milk to the macaroni and mix well.

I cut out some Kraft singles cheese into Pooh Bear shapes and put on top of the mac n cheese to make it look more appealing and appetizing.

Verdict : tasted satisfactory. As I didn’t use the entire packet of cheese powder, the mac n cheese didn’t taste as good as it should.

To note : the mac n cheese should be served and eaten immediately once cooked…. when it’s still hot, otherwise they will turn hard, clumpy and starchy, which was the case as I had cooked it earlier and kept it for half an hour before Alycia ate it when she returned from her Mandarin enrichment class. Consequently, she didn’t quite like it and didn’t finish the plate of mac n cheese.

While Alycia and Sherilyn ate mac n cheese, Baby C ate apple porridge with 8 other ingredients.  Click here to see the apple porridge.

A Galore Of Cute Mac & Cheese

While I was shopping for groceries at Jaya Grocer @ Jaya 33 PJ recently, I came across these:

Nagomi, cute mac&cheese, bibs 027
A galore of mac & Cheese by Kraft.  I have never seen so many choices of Mac & Cheese at other supermarkets, at least not in KL… and I was really tempted to buy a box each but only settled for one… just in case my 2 fussy eaters don’t like them.

Nagomi, cute mac&cheese, bibs 026
Spoilt for choice…. macaroni & cheese made with 50% whole grain in the shape of popular cartoon characters from Scooby Doo to Spiderman, Square Pants Sponge Bob, Pokemon and much more.

 Nagomi, cute mac&cheese, bibs 025

I asked Alycia to pick her choice and she chose a box of Pokemon.  Each box cost RM6.90 and is just enough for Alycia and Sherilyn for 1 meal.

Yummy And Easy To Cook Mac And Cheese

One of the food that Alycia and Sherilyn will never get fed up with is mac and cheese. And just like the song sang by Barney and Friends on mac and cheese, they can have macaroni, macaroni, mac and cheese everyday, 3 times daily! Their favorite is the one by San Remo.  It contains no added MSG and it’s really easy to cook.

All I have to add are some fresh milk or milk powder, butter  and dump the whole packet into 2 glasses of water in a pan, keep stirring for 10 minutes and voila, this is what I get :

…. a creamy and cheesy bowl of mac and cheese.  I can even add a slice or two of Kraft singles cheese or some mozarella cheese to it to make it more cheesy.

I cooked this for the gals yesterday. I added some pan-fried salmon fish and mixed veggie (all left over from the night before) to the mac and cheese and they wolfed down their bowl of mac and cheese in a jiffy.  No bribes and coercing on Sherilyn to eat her meal….. no need 2-3 hours to finish her meal painfully and no need screaming and threatening her with the cane too.

If It Looks Good, It Tastes Good Too

I mentioned in my earlier posts that Sherilyn my tough nut is super willful and disobedient. Getting her to do any task seems to be a tall order, from getting her to wee wee to poo poo to washing hands to just about any instructions, with the exception of getting her to eat biscuits, chips, ice-cream and other junkies.

When she started pre-school on Monday last week, I have been telling her everyday that she is to eat the food that I pack for her in her lunch box.  I also told her to finish the water in her tumbler.  However, she comes home each day with her food untouched and water almost untouched too.  I never had this problem with Alycia when she was Sherilyn’s age last year.  Alycia would obediently finish whatever food that I pack in her lunch box and she would also finish the water in her tumbler almost everyday.

Feeling tired of reminding Sherilyn to eat the food in her lunch box, I made something cute and attractive for her several days ago.  I got my maid to fry some eggs, then, I cut them into shapes with my heart shaped and flower shaped cookie cutters.

The result – she whacked all the eggs everyday!

I can’t wait to buy some Bento lunch boxes and tools online so that I can start having fun making pretty Bento lunch boxes for Alycia and Sherilyn. I’m sure they will love them too.

Sushi Sandwich

Since my 2 sick kittens do not have appetite to eat much, I decided to make them something different and appealing for lunch today.  I copied this from one of the Singaporean mummies’ blog.   It doesn’t take too much time and it’s really simple to prepare.  All you need to do is to buy a loaf of fresh bread,  fry 2 beaten up eggs, have some seaweeds, jam and cheese ready.  Rolling up and cutting up of the sushi sandwich only takes 10 minutes.

The top and bottom ones are egg and seaweed ‘sushi’.  It would taste better with some butter but since Alycia has a tummy discomfort and kept puking yesterday, I omitted the butter.

The ones in the middle are strawberry jam and cheese ‘sushi’.

Since I did this hurriedly (was rushing to grab an offer from this advertiser at 1pm), I did not do a good job rolling up the sushi and pressing the bread tightly.

Alycia and Sherilyn loved the sushi sandwiches to bits and gave their “ooohs and aahhs” and a big thumbs up!

Next time, I will try tuna sandwich sushi and chicken floss sandwich sushi.

As I was making this sushi sandwich, I was salivating away thinking of the gastronomical Japanese cuisine that we had last week.

Simple Lunch

When my former maid was around, I can just tell her to cook anything that we wanted to eat, almost anytime – fried noodles, fried mee, pancakes, crepes, mac and cheese, tumeric chicken, fried chicken, loh hon chai (vegetarian dish), fried fish, burgers, etc – just any dish that I’d taught her, she will know how to cook it the second time.  With my new blur and super slowcoach maid who forgets almost everything that I tell her, our lunch and dinner are super simple and easy now.

Last week, the girls only had sandwiches for lunch on most days coz mummy was too busy and kakak was super slow. In fact, they (especially Sherilyn who eats nothing but bread, egg, fish balls and milk) enjoyed the simple sandwiches much more than a complete meal. I made them sandwiches with fried egg, butter and chicken floss and peanut butter and cheese.

See how much they are enjoying their simple lunch with fresh milk here.

Simple And Wholesome Toasted Sandwiches

Ever since my maid went back to Indonesia, I’ve been preparing very simple lunch for the gals.  I am too tired to cook and my new temp Cambodian maid does not have much culinary skills.  Today, I made them toasted black sesame  sandwich with fried eggs, chicken floss and Japanese cucumber.  Though it was a simple lunch, the gals loved it, especially Sherilyn who only likes to eat eggs, bread and noodles.  So she ate without any fuss and I need not have to raise my voice or force her to chew and swallow her food.

Alycia’s Snacksbox

This is Alycia’s snacksbox. Though her pre-school provides food during snacks time but I don’t like the idea of her feeding on colored cakes, biscuits with cream and color, jellies loaded with sugar and other junks. So I’m willing to sacrifice 15 minutes of my time each morning to make her sandwiches. Yesterday I made her toasted walnut bread with cheese and homemade pineapple jam. Alycia loves it that I cut the sandwiches into triangle wedges. Sometimes she brings organic crackers or cookies and sometimes when I am lazy, I’d just buy some hot-cross potato buns across the bakery for her.

All-In-One Wholesome Dish

This is what we had for lunch yesterday :

A wholesome omelette made with 3 eggs, 1 Japanese sweet potato shredded, some minced chicken meat, chopped spring onions, Bombay onions and a dash of salt and pepper.

You get protein and iron from the eggs, carbohydrate and Vit A from the sweet potato, fibre from the sweet potato, spring onions and Bombay onions. Quite a complete meal for kids.

That’s watercress vegetables (‘sai yeong choy’ in Cantonese) soup with carrots, Chinese almonds, honey dates, red dates and chicken. A very nutritious soup that’s tasty and soothing.

Home-made Chicken Nuggets

After more than 5 failed attempts, I finally succeeded in making my own chicken nuggets. And they taste really good, as good as the ones from MacD or KFC, minus all the food additives and recycled oil.

Here’s the recipe that I’ve created (makes about 20 pieces) :

Chicken breast, blended
1 tbs wholemeal flour
1 tbs corn flour
2 eggs
Dash of pepper and salt

Mixed everything well in a big bowl, scoop out and fry them in a non-stick pan, spoon by spoon.

Even Miss Spity Spat Sherilyn ate the chicken nuggets.

Healthy Snack – Cherry Tomatoes

Another favourite snacks for me and my 2 lil’ ones, cherry tomatoes. Alycia loves them a lot. I normally try to buy organic ones but if I can’t find them, I’ll get regular ones. It’s also a great food for dieters as tomatoes have low GI (Glycemix Index) and rich in Vitamins and anti-oxidants.

I also love to use ripe tomatoes (blended into a paste) for cooking fish and minced chicken meat for the gals. Taste really good and is wholesome too.
