Alycia On Braces – Day 4

On day 4, Alycia was still on a fasting mode. She didn’t have the mood to eat anything, though her tummy was rumbling like crazy.  She was already sick of eating yoghurt, mashed avocado and fruit smoothies. She was drooling on Drama Queen’s homemade lemon pie but it was another ‘see but can’t eat’ case.  Everyone felt so bad for her.

When we went to the shopping mall in the evening, we chose Canton-I for dinner so that Alycia could eat porridge. But she wasn’t interested in porridge. She hates it. That’s the worst food in the whole world for this girl, though when she was a toddler, she loved her porridge.  She would bemoan and whine each time she eats porridge now.

At Canton-I, when the porridge arrived, we had to force the porridge down Alycia’s throat, literally. She looked glum with the bowl of porridge in front of her  🤐 What was on this girl’s mind was the shop next door that sells Japanese shaved ice desserts! Throughout our dinner at Canton-I, Alycia kept asking when she could have shaved ice, just like a little girl whining and pestering her parents for something 😂 After a quick dinner, we segued a few doors away to Kakigori to satiate Alycia’s craving for Japanese shaved ice while the hubs and mil continued with their dinner at Canton-I.

And so this was Alycia’s actual dinner on Braces Day 4 ~ a bowl of very refreshing Elderberry & Elder Flower Espuma:

The shaved ice dessert  wasn’t cloy sweet but very mildly sweetened with fruit juice topped with espuma (froth) ~ all natural ingredients and well-curated, which justifies why it has a price tag of RM19.

When I expressed shock that I had to pay RM19 for a bowl of shaved ice, Alycia quipped  that RM19 is for her breakfast, lunch and dinner ~ all in one bowl.  Very clever answer 🙄

Kakigori’s Elderberry & Elder Flower Espuma is a new flavour on shaved ice series. The generous portion of shaved ice (each bowl) is big enough to be shared across 2-3 persons. A whole mountain of shaved ice is filled with elderberry syrup all over with a thick layer of Espuma added as topping.  It tastes exactly like having a chilled wild berry yoghurt which gives kicks of sweet and sour berry flavours.  As you venture further into the shaved ice, there will be a little surprise awaiting (chunks of cheese) which  enhances the overall flavour and experience.

As I was rushing off to Uniqlo and Daiso to get some stuff, I left Alycia and Drama Queen at the cafe to enjoy the dessert.  But I will definitely be back at Kakigori with the girls to try other whimsical items from their exciting menu soon, perhaps at the next school holidays.

Braces For Alycia

On the first day of the school holidays last Monday, I brought Alycia and Drama Queen to the dentist to have their teeth assessed for braces.

An X-ray of their jaw / teeth was taken before the dentist can confirm if it’s a green light or yellow light for the girls.

Alycia would require 4 of her primolar extracted (OUCCCCCH!!!!!). Honestly, I really wish that Alycia doesn’t have to go through so much pain to have perfectly aligned teeth to look prettier.

When I was Alycia’s age, mum gave me the option to choose whether I wanted my 4 teeth extracted and wear braces or live with having a Snaggletooth (aka vampire tooth). I chose the latter.  I have a low pain threshold and at that time, having a Snaggletooth was the beauty trend in Japan and many Japanese girls went through pain just to have a Snaggletooth attached!

The X-ray and scaling for Alycia and Drama Queen cost RM740!  We will have to pay RM2,500 for Alycia’s braces tomorrow and thereafter RM200 each month for about 24 months.  The cost for the braces for each child costs RM6,500 excluding cost of X-ray and other miscellaneous charges 😓

Alycia’s appointment with the dentist to have the braces fixed is tomorrow (Wednesday, 20 June) and a few weeks later, have her 4 teeth extracted (2 teeth from each side to be removed each time).

As for Sherilyn, one of my customers who is a dentist read my Facebook posting on the girls’ dental procedure and told me about Myobrace.

The Myobrace System is a preventive pre-orthodontic treatment that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of crooked teeth, often without the need for braces or extraction of teeth, unlocking natural growth and development. Treatment is best suited to children aged 3 to 15 and involves using a series of removable intra-oral appliances that are worn for 1-2 hours each day plus overnight while sleeping.

I will fix an appointment with another dentist (who happens to be Cass’ kindy classmate’s mother whom I know) for Sherilyn and Cass to be assessed for Myobrace.

Since the first dental appointment, Alycia’s primary worry is not so much the pain and discomfort that she will have to endure but what she will not be able to eat for a long time ~ nuts and chocolate (which are her absolute favorite), biscuits, steak, etc. I told her that she will have no choice but to eat porridge (which she hates) for the first few days but my silly girl says she’s going to live on bread. I’ll see…

Today I bought ‘lar jar pau’ aka Messy Bun / Dirty Bun for Alycia, which is one of her favorite pastries. With braces on, I know my OCD girl will stay away from such messy food.

Drama Queen brought forward her chocolate chip cookie baking project to today so that Alycia could eat them before the braces are put on. She even made 2 batches from 2 different recipes so that her che che can stuff herself silly with chocolate chip cookies before her B day tomorrow 😬
