Boiling Telephone Porridge

I remember I only started to ‘poa tin war choak’ or ‘boil telephone porridge’ which, in Cantonese literally means using the telephone for a prolonged period till the telephone becomes hot, when I was a teenager. Sherilyn who is only 5 1/2 years old has recently started to boil telephone porridge by calling her best friend in class, Berlyn Yong, who is a very pretty girl with long curly hair.  One time, Sherilyn even chatted with Berlyn’s mother on her handphone when she was at work and when I found out, I spoke to Berlyn’s mother… who told me very nicely to ask Sherilyn to call Berlyn at home. What a cool and sporting mother Berlyn has. Berlyn also called my hubs on the handphone one day and he also entertained her. Now, they call each other every other day but I had to put my foot down when Sherilyn spent almost an hour chatting with Berlyn on the phone several times.

I can imagine and visualize how this 5 1/2 years old girl will transform into 8 years down the road when she turns into a teenager. I think she will even badger her yes-man daddy to get her a phone with her own fixed line or get her a handphone so that she can talk about boys, fashion and bitching stuff LOL!!

Caught on camera… sipping packet chocolate milk and boiling telephone porridge with Berlyn, when she should be taking her afternoon nap!  Do you have a 5 1/5 yo kid who does the same?

  1. OMG…ur little girl can talk on phone for so long..
I used to chat on phone with my friends on my teenager age,and I always get scolded by my dad.

  2. well, given a choice between kids developing social skills or strengthening friendship over telephone and learning through the idiot box telly, I guess the phone is the lesser evil. Also infinitely preferable to fighting with siblings, or other mischief like messing up the house, jumping up and down on the furniture!

  3. Just a suggestion..if she can tell time, limit her chat time to when it is “2 o’clock”, so she knows she has to hang up. That’s what my parents did. Back in the day it was only one phone in the hse and mum didn’t want it tied up with the kids nattering away!
