Mathematics For 5-Year Olds

Don’t you think this is a tad tough for a 5-year old (in Aly’s case, a 4-year old)?  Or is this the norm?  Alycia can only count and recognize numbers from 1 through 20+ but her pre-school is already teaching the 5-year olds in her class numbers up to 30. Alycia is the youngest in the class being a December child.

I don’t think Aly really comprehends what ‘comes between’ means.  So I think this exercise is really tough for her.

When I coached her in this exercise, I had to write down the numbers from 1 through 30 on a sheet of A4 paper and point out to her to show her where the correct numbers should be in the exercise.

Frankly, do you think this is tough or your 4-year old child already knows the whole concept of this exercise?  Looking at Alycia’s homework each day she brings them home  really scares me big time as I find them to be really tough for a 4 year old. Luckily I am a SAHM who can coach her.  If I were still working and leave her in the care of the sitter, I wonder who will coach her in her homework.  Gosh, I feel like one kiasu mum who is overly concern of her daughter!

  1. everything gets tougher nowadays.. I had problems with Rae’s problem sums she had in Pri 1 last year. And this year it went into more difficult heuristics her dad and i had to look at each other and raise our eyebrows!

  2. I think that’s a little tough for their age. XY can recite up to 100 (almost) but doesn’t u/std wat the nos mean (esp 20 n above). The maths exercise they’re doing now is addition n subtraction for nos 0-10.

  3. the math is too tough for a 4 years old kid. My son is 4 years old and he is now only learn courting 1 to 10 only. My son went to kindergarten in M’sia before he studied here, and the teacher gave him lot of home work everyday and i didn’t see any improvement from him after he has studied for a year.
When i moved here and he start his KG1 this year i can see that he started to pick up word and mathematic slowly. In KGI here they do a lot singing and they only do bring their homework to do at home once a week.
So, I really like the way they teach here and my son pick up quite well now.

  4. over here, 5 yr o childs being teach “tangan”, “bunga”, “bola”…etc, for what? if the child not even can recognize the a,b,c….

  5. Think that a little tough for a 4 yrs old!!! Think the school got very high standard.

I remembered mine only do the “come between” in K2.: )
