Not too long ago, I wrote about my mini drama involving a car park chip coin at my neighborhood supermarket which I always frequent. The dang small and slippery coin slipped out from my hand into a tiny gap between my car handbrake and my seat and I spent 15 minutes frantically trying to retrieve the coin. The supermarket manager whom I am very familiar with told me that he couldn’t help me and I had to pay a RM30 fine to replace the coin 😠. Thank God for watching over me, I managed to retrieve the coin and evaded the RM30 fine!

Today it happened again, WTF! I wonder if it’s only me with butter fingers (mind you, I’m a very cautious person) or this had happened to many ‘victims’? These days, my hands are always slippery and wet from hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Surely the tiny, smooth chip coin would slip from my hand, right? 😐

As I was driving out of the supermarket to the exit barrier, I took the coin from the dashboard and fudge, it dropped from my slippery hand into the tiny gap under the dashboard. I quickly parked my car at the side and with my loyal almost empty Cetaphil hand lotion tube that’s thin enough to go through the gap, tried pushing the coin out but the dang coin went to the right side into an even smaller gap. WTF!!! Previously I used the same hand lotion tube to push the coin out.

The coin looks easy to retrieve from the photo but there’s no way one can reach it as it’s wedged inside.

I called the car park attendant for help even though I knew that he won’t take the effort to help me coz he’s not the most helpful of staff and always has a grumpy and pissed off face. Wasted my time and effort calling him as he just said “tak tahu”. Whatever, go back to work. I quickly called hubs for SOS and fortunately he was on his way out of his shop to get some ingredients to cook fish head curry and managed to come to my rescue within 5 minutes.

One look at the dashboard and my handyman pushed a lever under the steering wheel and the steering wheel box loosened and moved up; I heard the dang chip coin roll out onto the mat. Thank God for helping me again! I really didn’t want to waste my RM30 on a stupid coin. 🤑

I have been driving this car for 7 years but never knew that there’s a lever here to push up the steering wheel box. Super blur me! Do you even know too? 😬

  1. Did u try using disposable chopsticks to get at the coin? Perhaps would be a good idea to use those foam inserts that fit between the seat and the gear box and even have a cutout slot for the seat belt lock. Got mine from Daiso in KL years ago.

    1. Know what, Chris? After the incident, I remembered that I actually have a pair of disposable chopsticks in my gloves compartment. I put them there after you suggested to me. But I totally forgot about the chopsticks when I panicked. Anyway, I don’t think the chopstick can go thru the tiny gap as the chopstick has a round tip and the gap is quite flat. Yeah, it’s a good idea to have foam inserts! But we’re still under a lockdown and I don’t dare venture out to the mall. Maybe I’ll just use a cloth for the time being to cover all the gaps on my dashboard and handbrake. Thanks for the suggestion again!! 🙂

  2. I believe that steering wheel lever is for the driver to adjust the tilt of the steering wheel. Some cars have “telescopic” steering wheels where apart from moving it up and down, one can also pull and push it to get it at a distance most comfortable for the driver.

    1. Hi Alvin
Ah yes, to adjust the height of the steering wheel. Now I remember. At the time of panicking, I forgot about this too lol! Thanks for leaving your comment here 🙂
