I never thought I would say this, but I’ve fallen in love with Arugula (wild rocket) salad! Not too long ago, I wasn’t a fan of its slightly bitter, peppery taste. But somehow, my taste buds have evolved, and now I can’t get enough of this nutrient-packed leafy green. It’s perhaps even a superfood.
What’s even more surprising is that my daughters, who also didn’t care for Arugula before, have now developed a liking for it too. Maybe it’s because I only stock up on Arugula and other leafy greens in the fridge, so they’ve had no choice but to eat it. But hey, no complaints now—they seem to enjoy it as much as I do! I’m lucky all my girls are raw veggie lovers. Like me, they don’t like salad dressing and eat the greens plain or with a touch of Balsamic vinegar. They usually pair their salads with a protein.
Most people drizzle their salads with dressing, but I prefer my Arugula plain. I love its distinct, aromatic taste and don’t want dressings to overpower it. There’s something so refreshing about eating it straight from the box—just crisp, peppery leaves packed with goodness. I buy the triple washed, ready to eat ones.
Aside from its delicious taste, Arugula is also a powerhouse of nutrition. Every bite is loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Here’s why it deserves a spot in your diet:
1. Rich in Vitamins & Minerals
Arugula is packed with Vitamin K, which supports bone health, and Vitamin C, an immune booster. It also contains folate, an essential nutrient for cell growth and metabolism.
2. High in Antioxidants
This leafy green is full of antioxidants that help fight inflammation and protect against chronic diseases. It’s also rich in glucosinolates, compounds known for their cancer-fighting properties.
3. Good for Digestion
Arugula is high in fiber, which supports gut health and digestion. It keeps things moving smoothly and helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
4. Supports Heart Health
With its high nitrate content, Arugula can help regulate blood pressure and improve circulation, making it great for cardiovascular health.
5. Low in Calories, High in Nutrients
For those watching their weight, Arugula is a fantastic choice. It’s low in calories but densely packed with essential nutrients, making it an ideal superfood.
Arugula isn’t the cheapest leafy green around. A 100g punnet costs RM10, which is enough for two servings. That’s RM5 per person—almost like taking a daily multivitamin, but in its pure, natural form. Given its impressive nutrient profile, I’d say it’s worth every cent!
I never expected to love Arugula this much, but now, it’s become a staple in my diet. My girls have joined me on this Arugula-loving journey too. Whether they eat it out of necessity or genuine enjoyment, I’m just happy that we’re all getting a solid dose of nutrients with every meal.
