The Butter Monster Chronicles

There’s a certain someone in the house who loves butter with an unmatched passion. This isn’t just a casual fondness—it’s a full-blown obsession. Bread, crackers, cakes, pancakes —everything gets a generous slathering. My advice to go easy on the butter? Ignored. My attempts to ration and hide it? Futile. And my expensive stash of Danish Lurpak Lighter butter? Wiped out faster than I can say smørrebrød.

Recently, I thought I’d outsmart the Butter Monster. I swapped my beloved Lurpak Lighter spreadable butter for Golden Churn spreadable butter with olive oil, banking on the olive oil flavor deterring her. Initially, it worked. She avoided the new butter as long as there was a smidge of Lurpak left. But the moment the Lurpak tub ran dry, she reluctantly moved on to the Golden Churn, devouring it like a pro.

Not ready to admit defeat, I introduced another contender: Payson Breton butter from France. This one isn’t spreadable—it’s a hard and unsalted butter. I thought the inconvenience of spreading hard butter straight out of the fridge might slow her down. And for a brief, shining moment, it did. But desperation knows no bounds. Once the Golden Churn was almost gone, the Butter Monster made quick work of my Payson Breton too.

It’s a relentless cycle. If I were the only one eating butter, a tub could last me two to three months. But with the Butter Monster lurking in the kitchen, my butter is now disappearing in just one to two weeks!

I’ve considered going for cheaper butter, but I’m adamant about quality. The brands of butter I buy are pure—just milk, water, and salt. No additives, no compromise. So, what’s left to do?

To fellow butter enthusiasts out there—how do you protect your golden tubs of joy? Share your tips before my butter budget spirals out of control!

Meanwhile, I’ll be savoring my toast with a very thin layer of butter, hoping it lasts just a little bit longer.

The butter monster even had the cheek to leave this pathetic amount of butter in the tub in the fridge for me!

Her not so favorite brands of butter. These European butters are pretty expensive too, at over RM20 for a 250g tub.

What You Need to Know About Moving Vehicles in the Buckeye State

Ohio, known as the Buckeye State, is a bustling hub for commerce and transportation, making it essential to understand the rules and logistics of moving vehicles within its borders. Whether you’re relocating, selling a car, or transporting commercial vehicles, staying informed ensures a smoother process. Here’s a comprehensive guide to moving vehicles in Ohio.

Understanding Ohio’s Vehicle Regulations

Ohio has specific laws regarding the movement of vehicles, from standard passenger cars to oversized commercial trucks. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) oversees licensing, titling, and registration for all vehicles.

When moving a vehicle into Ohio from another state, it must be titled and registered within 30 days of establishing residency. Additionally, out-of-state titles must be transferred, requiring a visit to a Clerk of Courts Title Office. Bring the following:

  • The original title
  • Proof of identity
  • An Ohio vehicle inspection certificate

Navigating the Titling and Registration Process

For first-time movers, Ohio’s titling and registration process might seem daunting. However, it’s straightforward if approached methodically:

  1. Title Transfer:
Visit a local Title Office to transfer the vehicle’s title. If there’s a lien on the car, the lender must send the original title to Ohio.
  2. Inspection Requirements:
Before registering an out-of-state vehicle, it must pass an Ohio vehicle inspection. This ensures compliance with state safety and emission standards.
  3. Vehicle Registration:
After titling, head to the BMV to register your vehicle. Fees vary depending on the type of vehicle and local taxes.

Vehicle transportation in Ohio is a critical step when relocating from another state, ensuring that the vehicle complies with all registration and inspection requirements before hitting the road. Failing to complete these steps on time can result in fines, delays, or even the inability to legally operate your vehicle within the state.

 Transporting Commercial Vehicles

Ohio’s position as a transportation crossroads means commercial vehicle operators must be aware of specific regulations. Oversized and overweight vehicles require permits issued by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Common requirements include:

  • Accurate route planning to avoid restricted roads and bridges
  • Escort vehicles for wide loads, depending on dimensions
  • Compliance with weight limits on highways

For business owners, partnering with a logistics expert that’s familiar with Ohio laws can save time and reduce errors.

Tips for Stress-Free Vehicle Relocation

Relocating a vehicle can be complex, but the following tips can simplify the process:

  • Hire a Professional Transport Service:
For long distances, consider hiring a licensed vehicle transport company. Make sure they’re bonded and insured for peace of mind.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle:
Before moving, remove personal items, check for fluid leaks, and document the car’s condition with photos.
  • Plan Ahead for Seasonal Challenges:
Ohio’s winters can be harsh, complicating vehicle transport. Plan for potential delays if moving your vehicle between November and March.

Final Thoughts

Moving vehicles in the Buckeye State involves understanding local regulations and planning ahead. Whether you’re an individual relocating or a business moving a fleet, adhering to Ohio’s requirements ensures a seamless process. By following the steps outlined above, you’ll navigate the move with confidence, avoiding unnecessary complications.

Cass Passes Her Freestyle 1 Skating Test

Two Sundays ago, Cass achieved a significant milestone in her skating journey—she passed her Freestyle 1 (FS1) test! For freestyle tests, skaters must wear their costumes, adding a touch of elegance and excitement to the occasion.

Truthfully, I had no doubt she would pass this test. Cass has been incredibly dedicated, pouring 102% effort into her practices and relentlessly striving to improve. Her determination and love for skating shine through every time she steps onto the ice. It’s inspiring to see her chase her passion with such vigor and focus.

I’m so glad that Cass has found something she genuinely loves. Skating has become more than just a hobby for her—it’s a part of who she is. What’s even more exciting is that this passion could become a freelance job for her in the future. Coaching skating might not only allow her to continue doing what she loves but also give her the chance to inspire the next generation of skaters.

It’s no secret that skating is a costly pursuit. Between lessons, costumes, competition fees, test fees, extra lessons before competitions and tests, and other expenses, it all adds up. But hubby and I are committed to supporting Cass’s dreams. Seeing her joy and fulfillment on the ice makes every sacrifice worth it.

Congratulations, Cassandra —you’ve made us so proud! Keep shining on the ice!

Chiropractic Care for Pregnant Moms: A Safe and Effective Solution

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can also bring about physical discomforts such as back pain, pelvic misalignment, and increased pressure on the spine. For pregnant moms, chiropractic care offers a safe and non-invasive way to alleviate these discomforts while promoting overall health and well-being throughout pregnancy. With gentle, specialized techniques, chiropractors can help expectant mothers feel more comfortable and prepare their bodies for a smoother birthing experience.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on maintaining proper spinal alignment and addressing the unique physical changes that occur as the body prepares for childbirth.

1.  Relief from Back and Pelvic Pain: As the baby grows, the added weight can shift your center of gravity and increase strain on your back and pelvis. Chiropractic adjustments help realign your spine and pelvis, reducing pain and improving mobility.

2.  Improved Balance and Posture: Hormonal changes during pregnancy loosen ligaments, which can lead to poor posture and misalignment. Regular chiropractic care helps maintain proper alignment, promoting better balance and reducing strain on your body.

3.  Enhanced Baby Positioning: Chiropractic techniques, such as the Webster Technique, can help optimize pelvic alignment, creating more space for the baby and potentially reducing the risk of complications during delivery.

Safe and Gentle Care for Expectant Mothers
Chiropractors who specialize in prenatal care use techniques that are specifically adapted for pregnant women. These adjustments are gentle, safe, and designed to provide relief without putting pressure on the abdomen. Chiropractic care can be a great addition to prenatal wellness routines, supporting both the mother’s and baby’s health.

Take the Next Step Toward a Comfortable Pregnancy

My Blood Test Update

Last Saturday, I went for a routine blood test at AA Pharmacy, eager to see if the statin I started back in April had effectively lowered my cholesterol. The test package from Accura Healthcare was reasonably priced at RM38 and included a lipid profile, blood glucose test, and a full blood count. On Sunday, the results arrived via WhatsApp, and I was both relieved and surprised by the findings.

Positive News on Cholesterol

The good news: my total cholesterol level has dropped significantly from 7.98 in March to 4.93 now. Clearly, the statin is working! This improvement is reassuring, and it shows that my efforts to monitor and manage my cholesterol are paying off. Despite having genetically high cholesterol (it runs in the family), statins managed to bring the level down.

Blood Glucose Check: FBS vs HbA1c

My blood glucose level was also well within range at 4.98, which is consistent with my usual Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) readings, which have always been below 5.2. This result initially made me feel at ease, but then I noticed a new marker on my report: HbA1c. For the first time, I saw an HbA1c reading, and to my surprise, it had an asterisk next to it, indicating a high result.

Curious about HbA1c, I did a quick Google search and learned some important insights. HbA1c, also called glycated hemoglobin, reflects your average blood glucose levels over the past two to three months. Essentially, it measures how much glucose has attached to your red blood cells, which is why it’s often used to assess long-term glucose control.

According to health guidelines:

  • An ideal HbA1c level for those with diabetes should be 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or below.
  • For those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the target HbA1c level should be below 42 mmol/mol (6%).

My HbA1c reading was 6.08%, just above the threshold, which flagged me as at risk of pre-diabetes.

Getting Advice from My Cardiologist

I immediately shared my report with my cardiologist, hoping for his guidance. He confirmed that despite my good FBS reading, my HbA1c indicated that I’m at risk for pre-diabetes. He emphasized the need to cut back on sweet foods, as sugar is likely a factor driving up this average blood sugar level.

Rethinking My Diet

I’ve always followed a low-carb diet, avoiding rice, noodles, and most starchy foods, but I do indulge in cakes, biscuits, and my favorite probiotic drink, Vitagen. With this new information, I realize it’s time to take a closer look at my diet and be more mindful of sweet stuff and fruits. In fact, the memory of when I was pregnant with Alycia came to mind—my blood sugar levels had spiked due to my love for grapes. Cutting down on them and reducing sweet foods quickly brought my glucose levels back to normal, so I’m optimistic this approach will help again.

My Plan for Healthier Blood Sugar Levels

Armed with my cardiologist’s advice and a clear goal, I’m ready to cut down on sugary treats and even moderate my intake of fruits to keep my blood sugar stable. In six months, I’ll do another blood test to check my HbA1c level, hoping to see a drop back to normal levels.

This experience has reminded me of the importance of regular blood tests. Our health markers tell us more than we might assume, and even small changes, like cutting down on sugar, can make a huge difference in the long run. If you’re putting off your blood test or feel that you’ve “checked everything before,” remember that there’s always more to learn. It’s never too late to start making healthier changes!

Total cholesterol has gone down from 7.89 in March 2024 to 4.93 in November 2024.

HbA1c of 6.08. My goal is to bring it down to below 6 within 6 months.

Saturday, 16 November 2024 ~ A Morning at AA Pharmacy For A Blood Test

Today, I made my way to AA Pharmacy for a blood test. In collaboration with Accura Healthcare, AA Pharmacy offers monthly affordable blood tests, making it an excellent alternative to clinics or hospitals. Over the years, I’ve done my annual blood tests here. I like the convenience that Accura will Whatsapp the softcopy of the blood test report to me first and I can later collect the hardcopy from the pharmacy at my neighborhood.

This visit, however, wasn’t part of my routine yearly check-up. My cardiologist had advised me to check my cholesterol levels a few months after starting on statins, and today was the day to see if the medication is working.

I have Familial hypercholesterolemia, a disorder that is passed down through families. It causes LDL (bad) cholesterol levels to be very high. Even though I eat very little meat, and am stick thin, my cholesterol levels are still very high.

As I sat down at the registration table, the man from Accura managing the blood tests surprised me. He asked if I’d come for a blood test earlier this year in February. When I confirmed, he said he remembered me! Imagine my surprise—he’d only seen me once for about 10-15 minutes, nine months ago, yet he still recalled me. I couldn’t help but wonder what made me so memorable! Perhaps my friendly chatter or just good old serendipity? Either way, it was a small but pleasant moment that added a personal touch to the experience.

Thankfully, the medical assistant did a great job drawing my blood with minimal discomfort—something I always appreciate, as needles aren’t my favorite thing. With the test done, I rewarded myself by heading next door to a coffee shop for a comforting bowl of my favorite bitter gourd soup with minced pork.

Skipping the noodles, I opted for a hearty bowl filled with thinly sliced bitter gourd, a soft egg, minced pork, and crunchy pork lard, all swimming in a hot, flavorful pork soup. It was a bowl of keto pure comfort after fasting for 16 hours.  Alongside, I indulged in a cup of milk tea—a treat I’ve avoided for over a year due to its tendency to cause heart palpitations and dizziness. But today, I couldn’t resist!

Now, the waiting begins. I’m hopeful that my cholesterol levels have dropped and that the statin is doing its job. I’d rather not have my cardiologist increase the dosage or add another medication. Fingers crossed that the changes I’ve made to my lifestyle and diet, coupled with the statin, are enough to keep things under control.

RM11 for a big bowl of bitter gourd, minced pork and an egg with lots of pork lard in a flavorful pork broth.

Fruitful Investments: Prioritizing Fruits for My Family’s Health and Well-being

For as long as I can remember, fruits have been a dietary cornerstone in my family. Since my daughters turned six months old, I’ve made it a point to introduce a variety of fruits into their diets. As they grew, this habit blossomed into a family culture of fruit appreciation that we all share. Each of my daughters developed a love for fruits, mirroring my own passion for fresh, wholesome produce. Yet, as much as they enjoy fruits, I still play a big role in their consumption—because when it comes to peeling and chopping, they can be a bit…lazy!

When my girls were younger, I made them each a daily fruit box to enjoy after school, packed with freshly cut apples, citrus fruits, berries, melons, or whatever was in season. Now that the two older girls are in university, life is busier, schedules are less predictable, and we’ve had to adapt. I no longer prepare a box for each of them daily, but I keep an assortment of cut fruits in the fridge. They can grab a container whenever they come home and I can see that they truly enjoy their ready-to-eat fresh fruits.

Cass, my youngest, has kept up with our tradition of daily fruits. She’s a fruit monster and devours them in quantities that frequently stretch my budget! Alycia still enjoys fruits but doesn’t reach for them every day like Cass. And Sherilyn is so busy with her studies and competitive dance that her diet has suffered a bit. She doesn’t make fruits or other healthy foods a priority anymore, but she’ll indulge in exotic fruits like mangoes, blueberries, or strawberries when they’re around. I hope she’ll return to her daily fruit consumption once her routine settles.

In maintaining our fruit-focused diet, I’ve noticed that it’s not just a weekly grocery choice but an investment in health. With an average of RM200-RM300 each week spent on fruits alone, it may seem like a big expenditure, but it’s one that I believe pays off in the long run. I see it as a form of health insurance, hoping it supports their immune systems and helps them cultivate a lifelong appreciation for healthy foods.

How much do you spend on fruits for your family each month?

Today the girls get to enjoy pink guava, mangoes and papaya!

Love the vibrant pink hue from the pink guava!

Reasons to Replace a Concrete Driveway with Block Paving

Thinking of replacing your tired, worn concrete driveway? Block paving is an attractive, durable alternative that offers many benefits. Upgrading to block paving can instantly boost your home’s kerb appeal while providing long-lasting functionality. There are several solid reasons to consider replacing your concrete driveway with block paving.

Better Aesthetics with Block Paving

One of the main reasons homeowners opt to replace plain concrete with block paving is for the aesthetic appeal. Block paving comes in lots of different colours, patterns, and textures to create a stylish driveway that complements your home’s exterior. The modular nature of the pavers means you can create custom designs like borders, patterns, or accents. Concrete tends to look boring and flat in comparison. With block paving installed by companies specialising in block paving driveways Coventry, you can mix pavers of different colours and sizes to create visual interest. It’s a great way to increase your home’s kerb appeal.

Better Drainage than Concrete

Concrete is an impermeable material that collects rainwater on the surface. In contrast, block paving is designed to allow drainage between the joints of the pavers. Stormwater can seep through the gaps and permeate into the substrate below. This prevents large puddles from forming and eliminates standing water issues. The drainage properties of block paving also help reduce surface runoff into drains. Less flooding means you don’t have to worry as much about tracking wet mud or debris into your home after heavy rainfall. Proper drainage with block paving also minimises cracking and heaving issues over time.

Long-Lasting Durability

Both concrete and block paving are very durable driveway options built to last. However, concrete wears down faster than block paving over the years. The individual pavers used in block paving are made of durable high-strength concrete. Their smaller size allows for easy repair and replacement of single damaged pavers as needed. With block paving, you can redo small sections seamlessly without the expense of re-paving the entire driveway. Block paving maintains its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal for decades longer than poured concrete. It’s built to withstand use and weather with minimal upkeep required.

Easier Repair and Modification

Over time, concrete can crack, crumble, sink, or heave due to freeze-thaw cycles, weather, and ground movement. Repairing concrete properly requires specialty tools and materials. However, repairing a block paved driveway is much simpler. Because it consists of individual units, you can remove and replace damaged pavers one by one as needed. No special skills or concrete work needed! Block paving also makes it easy to modify or extend your driveway over time. No jackhammers necessary – new pavers can be laid right over the existing ones if you want to expand your driveway later on. Overall, block paving is a more DIY-friendly and cost-effective material when repairs are needed down the road.

The aesthetic appeal, drainage properties, long lifespan, and easy repairability make block paving a superior choice over concrete for UK home driveways. The initial installation cost may be higher but block paving adds value and will save you money in the long run.

Monday Morning Surprise at the ‘Chap Fan’ Shop

Today, I decided to walk to the “chap fan” (economy rice) shop to buy some dishes. As l I walked into the shop, I spotted a familiar face – MC, the ‘friendly’ guy I always seem to bump into there. As soon as I stepped in, he was at his usual spot, facing the entrance with a playful grin, almost as if he’d been waiting for me.

MC is one of those colorful characters who’s always been open about his interest in me, even though he knows I’m married. We’ve known each other for about ten years, and he never misses a chance to crack a few jokes or make small talk. We met at the gym at my condo and used to chat every morning when he came to our gym to workout.  He doesn’t live in our condo but owns a unit there. He lives in a bungalow in our hood.

True to form, the moment he saw me, MC started with his usual banter, mentioning that he hadn’t seen me around for two weeks and teasingly asked where I’d been. After paying for my food, he invited me again to have lunch with him sometime. As I was about to head out, he asked for my phone number since I’d changed it a few years back and hadn’t given him the new one. Out of respect for our long-standing friendship, I shared it with him and quickly made my exit.

Since my hubby has taken my car for the past month, I have been walking to the shops to buy food and groceries in the mornings. He recently sold his old 9-seater MPV, which had become a bit of a mechanical headache, especially since the pandemic. With one issue after another, costing him tens of thousands of bucks to repair his car, he finally let it go, and he’s now eagerly waiting for his new car to arrive 🏎️. I am so glad to have my car back finally!

Worried About Oral Health? Follow These Top Tips

Oral health is about more than just having a bright, white smile; it’s a crucial part of your overall well-being. Good oral hygiene can actually prevent a range of issues, from stained teeth and cavities to gum disease and tooth decay. It can even reduce the risk of some health conditions. If you’re concerned about your oral health, here are some top tips to help keep your teeth and gums in great shape.

1. Brush Regularly and Correctly

Brushing is one of the most essential practices for maintaining oral health, but it’s not just about doing it twice a day—technique matters, too. Here’s how to brush effectively:

  • Use the right brush: A soft-bristled toothbrush is best, as it’s gentle on both teeth and gums.
  • Brush for two minutes: Short brushing sessions may miss spots, so aim for a full two minutes.
  • 45-degree angle: Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions.
  • Brush all surfaces: Clean the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of your teeth for thorough coverage.

Top Tip: Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when the bristles start to fray.

2. Don’t Skip the Floss

Flossing is just as important as brushing, yet it’s often overlooked. Flossing helps remove any leftover food particles and plaque from between teeth and along the gumline, areas where your toothbrush can’t reach. Make flossing a daily habit, ideally before bedtime, to help prevent cavities and gum disease. If regular floss feels awkward, try alternatives like floss picks or water flossers.

3. Rinse with Mouthwash

Mouthwash can provide an extra layer of protection for your teeth and gums. Look for a mouthwash that contains fluoride to strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Additionally, antimicrobial mouthwash can help reduce plaque and prevent gum disease. Use mouthwash once or twice a day after brushing and flossing to enjoy its full benefits.

4. Watch Your Diet

What you eat has a significant impact on your oral health. Foods high in sugar and starch, for example, feed the bacteria that cause plaque, leading to cavities and gum problems. Try to limit sugary snacks and drinks, including soda and even fruit juices. Opt for foods that promote oral health, like apples and carrots, dairy products (rich in calcium), and green tea, which have natural antibacterial properties.

5. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is essential for keeping your entire body functioning and hydrated, but it also helps your mouth stay healthy. Water rinses away food particles, helps produce saliva, and balances pH levels, reducing the risk of cavities. Make it a habit to drink water after meals to help cleanse your mouth and neutralize acids.

6. Don’t Forget About Tongue Care

Your tongue can harbor bacteria, just like your teeth and gums. Bacteria on the tongue contribute to bad breath and can affect your oral health. Use a tongue scraper or use your toothbrush to gently brush your tongue every day to remove bacteria and improve your breath.

7. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regular dental check-ups are absolutely crucial for maintaining good oral health. Dentists can spot issues like cavities and oral cancer in their early stages, allowing for timely treatment. Aim for a check-up and cleaning every six months. Even if you don’t have any symptoms, these appointments help catch potential problems early and keep your teeth in optimal condition. If you’re looking for a suitable dentist, springmountdental.co.uk offer private dental care and a wide range of treatment options, meaning you can get the care you need to maintain health and be your best self, too.

8. Consider Preventive Treatments

Preventive treatments like fluoride treatments and dental sealants are especially beneficial for protecting teeth. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay, while dental sealants provide a protective coating on the molars, where cavities are most common. Ask your dentist if these treatments are suitable for you.

9. Consider Cosmetic Dental Treatments

If you’re concerned about the appearance of your teeth, cosmetic treatments can also play a role in enhancing your oral health. Procedures like teeth whitening, orthodontics, or veneers can not only improve aesthetics but also boost your confidence in your smile, which may encourage you to maintain your oral hygiene better. Cosmetic treatments are an option if you want to address issues like staining, alignment, or chipped teeth.

Maintaining good oral health doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s all about consistent, everyday habits and regular visits to the dentist. By following these top tips, you can enjoy a healthier mouth, a brighter smile, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re taking good care of your oral health.

Adjusting to Life Without a Part-Time Helper

After 12 years of having Maria, my part-time helper, take care of our home, life feels different now that she’s no longer coming by. Maria, who’s now pregnant with her second baby, has had to stop work due to health concerns. Last year she had a molar pregnancy and had to perform a D&C. She borrowed money from me for the procedure and was traumatized by the incident for a long time. Her eldest child, a boy, is already 4 years old and living in Indonesia with her MIL.

Rather than looking for a replacement, I decided to manage the household chores myself. While it’s an adjustment, I’ve found ways to make it work and even uncovered a few new strategies for keeping my sensitive hands safe.

My hands are quite sensitive, so a big priority for me has been to find gentle cleaning solutions. I’ve switched to mild dishwashing liquids, which tend to be a bit pricier but are much easier on my skin. When it comes to cleaning, disposable nitrile gloves have been a true lifesaver.

Nitrile gloves are made of synthetic rubber that resists punctures and harsh cleaning chemicals. They’re thin yet durable, keep my hands dry, and handle just about every task without tearing. Although water sometimes seeps in from the top, I’m planning to invest in some elbow-length gloves to minimize that as much as possible.

Aside from dishwashing, these gloves have proven essential for heavier tasks like scrubbing bathrooms or wiping down greasy surfaces in the kitchen. I tried disposable plastic gloves, but they were no match; they tore easily and let water in. Nitrile gloves have made my transition to self-sufficient cleaning so much easier.

As for the rest of the household routine, I’ve had to make some adjustments. Cooking every day isn’t feasible anymore, so I’m opting for simple meals or leftovers on some days to save time. We ‘tapau’ food from shops for lunch almost every day and dinner is either homecooked or we just skip dinner altogether if lunch is heavy. Similarly, I’m learning to be more relaxed about the little messes—like dust on the fans and windows or a bit of grease on the kitchen walls—that aren’t urgent. Keeping up with everything perfectly is less important than finding balance and keeping things manageable.

One-tray meals are a regular now. I dump all the different types of meat and veggies into a tray and grill them in the oven. Here, I grilled Beacon drummets & wingettes and salmon in one tray. I even marinated both the salmon and chicken with the same seasoning.

Why I Haven’t Let Alycia Wash a Dish in 5 Months

Since June this year, a simple daily chore like washing dishes has become a hands-off task for my Alycia. 6th June was the day her left ring finger was severely injured after a glass container shattered when it slipped from her hand when she was washing it and required immediate surgery. What started as a two-month recovery period turned into a five-month journey, and she still hasn’t touched a single greasy dish.

Initially, Alycia’s surgeon estimated that she’d be back to normal activities by August. But due to an infection that developed in the finger two months after the surgery, she needed a second emergency surgery to drain the pus. This setback, and the lingering risk of infection, has made me wary of letting her handle any dishwashing duties. Even her very understanding and compassionate boss at the café where she works part-time told her that she could come back to work and doesn’t have to handle dishwashing.

Though the second surgery should have been the end of her troubles, she faced yet another challenge when blisters formed on her finger a couple of months later. We’re all a little frustrated by the slow recovery, but protecting her finger from further issues has become a priority.

As a result, I’ve taken on the extra task of washing all of her dishes, even when I’ve already settled into clean clothes after a shower. It’s not an ideal situation, and I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t get tiring and frustrating, and at times I do feel angry. On top of the extra washing, I’ve switched to gentle dishwashing liquids to protect her finger from harsh chemicals, in case she washes non-oily dishes, adding an extra cost. Every time she places her used plates and cutlery in the sink, there’s a moment of frustration; but I remind myself that it’s for her healing and peace of mind.

It’s been a challenging year, with unexpected hurdles one after another, but we’re pushing through. Next year, I look forward to a fresh start and hope for Alycia’s full recovery. Here’s to hoping 2024 brings healing, health, and a full return to daily routines for both Alycia and me!

A Sunday of Simple Pleasures

Yesterday was a quiet Sunday morning for my hubby and me. With his mom off to Ipoh for a fun trip with friends, and our girls each caught up in their own routines, it was just the two of us. Alycia was working her part-time job, Sherilyn was home finishing yet another assignment before heading to the dance studio, and Cass, as always, was practicing at the skating rink.

My husband suggested brunch at O&S coffee shop in Paramount Garden, PJ. This bustling spot is packed with all our favorite hawker dishes, and it was perfect for a morning just to savor good food and conversation without the usual family commotion. After filling up, we indulged a bit further and stepped next door to Nareo Donut for coffee and a donut treat. It was impossible for hubby to leave without picking up some extras, so he bought four donuts for the girls – a little splurge at RM55 for four!

After brunch, we made our way to Pavilion Bukit Jalil to pick up Cass. She wasn’t thrilled to see me at first – she’d been cheering for her skating friends who were undergoing tests that day and wasn’t ready to go home. So, hubby parked, and I waited inside the rink to watch her for a bit. Watching Cass glide, jump, and spin on the ice always amazes me; her grace and dedication are inspiring. Reaching this level in skating is no small feat, considering that she started late and has only been skating for two years, and I can see all the hours of training and practice in her every move. She’s still got many levels to master, and each step forward is a testament to her determination. Of course, skating comes with a very hefty price tag, but seeing her joy and progress makes it worthwhile. Cass will be sitting for her skating test this coming Sunday and she’s been going to the skating rink more times this week to practise.

As we headed toward the supermarket, we noticed a Michael Kors roadshow with an offer for a complimentary gourmet coffee if you signed up as a member. Cass didn’t waste a second – she’s always been one for freebies and quickly scanned the code to claim her coffee. Over time, she’s managed to snag a fair share of free goodies from the shops in the mall. It’s a small joy but so much fun to see her so excited about these little perks!

In all, it was a laid-back Sunday but full of those simple moments that make life feel just right. Family, good food, watching our kids in their element.

At Food Merchant, I picked up this wagyu beef patties as I couldn’t resist the buy 1 free 1 promotion! I also bought the usual 50% discounted triple washed salads and blueberries.

How a Thoughtful Bathroom Design Boosts Wellness in Every Detail

The bathroom, often seen as a functional space, holds tremendous potential for enhancing wellness and tranquility. A thoughtfully designed bathroom can become a personal sanctuary where every detail contributes to a sense of relaxation, rejuvenation, and balance. By incorporating certain design principles, you can create a bathroom that promotes wellness, turning everyday routines into moments of self-care. Here’s how focusing on essential elements can make your bathroom a true haven for health and relaxation.

1. Embracing Natural Materials for a Calming Aesthetic

Natural materials can create a soothing environment, helping to connect your bathroom to nature. These materials evoke a spa-like feel, reducing stress and inviting relaxation. For example, a stone or wood vanity can bring warmth and texture to the room, while a glass shower enclosure can keep the space feeling open and serene. Thoughtfully selected, high-quality materials make a big difference in the bathroom’s ambiance, and a range of natural-inspired options is available through Woodstone Bathrooms, offering products that blend elegance with calming design.

    2. Lighting That Sets the Mood

Lighting plays a significant role in creating a soothing bathroom environment. Aim for a combination of natural light and soft, ambient lighting to create a balanced feel. Layered lighting, including dimmable overhead lights and wall sconces near the vanity, lets you adjust the brightness when you need to, whether you’re preparing for the day ahead or unwinding at night. Installing soft LED lights around mirrors or under shelves adds a gentle glow that minimizes shadows, enhancing the bathroom’s relaxing vibe.

    3. Maximizing Space for an Open, Airy Feel

Cluttered spaces can often lead to a cluttered mind, so maximizing your bathroom layout with ample storage and thoughtful organization is essential. Choose vanities and storage solutions that streamline your essentials while keeping the space open and airy. Floating vanities, recessed shelving, and sleek cabinetry can keep your items helpfully out of sight yet within easy reach, giving you a clean, organized environment that promotes calmness. A minimalist design approach keeps the bathroom feeling fresh and focused on wellness.

    4. Incorporating a Wellness-Inspired Shower or Bath

An upgraded shower or bath experience can significantly enhance your bathroom’s wellness factor. Consider features like rain showerheads or multi-jet showers for a spa-like feel, or add a soaking tub to create a space for unwinding. Adjustable water pressure settings and temperature controls allow you to personalize your experience. The right fixtures can turn a simple shower or bath into a soothing ritual, bringing a little luxury into your daily routine.

    5. Adding Natural Elements for Balance

Incorporating elements like indoor plants, bamboo accents, or a small water feature can create a beautifully harmonious environment. Plants not only add greenery but also improve air quality and reduce stress. Choose low-maintenance, humidity-loving plants like aloe vera, bamboo, or peace lilies to complement your bathroom’s natural design. Even small touches, such as wooden trays or stone accessories, bring grounding energy to the space, promoting a sense of balance and peace.

    6. Enhancing the Sensory Experience

A wellness-focused bathroom appeals to all the senses. Soft textures, such as plush towels and bathmats, add a layer of comfort, while aromatherapy can play a massive role in setting the mood. Use essential oil reed diffusers to fill the room with calming scents like lavender or eucalyptus, enhancing your relaxation. Additionally, consider installing a small sound system or a waterproof speaker to enjoy soft music or nature sounds, creating an immersive environment that nurtures your well-being.

    7. Prioritizing Comfort with Smart Features

Integrating smart features into your bathroom design can make routines more comfortable and efficient. From heated floors to smart mirrors with built-in lighting and anti-fog features, these enhancements add both luxury and convenience. Smart showers allow you to set water temperature and flow preferences, providing an optimized experience each time. By adding these features, you can enhance both functionality and relaxation, supporting wellness in every interaction.

Transform Your Bathroom into a Wellness Sanctuary

Every detail in a bathroom can contribute to a wellness-focused design, turning daily routines into opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation. By emphasizing natural materials, calming lighting, optimized space, and wellness-focused features, you can transform your bathroom into a sanctuary. With the right elements, your bathroom becomes more than just a functional room; it’s a place to reconnect with yourself, find calm, and nurture well-being every day.

Wardrobe Essentials for Moms on the Go

As a mom with a packed schedule, your wardrobe should work as hard as you do, offering comfort, versatility, and style while keeping up with your busy days. Whether you’re dropping off the kids, attending meetings, or running errands, having a few key wardrobe pieces can make getting ready a breeze. Here are some wardrobe essentials for moms on the go that balance function, comfort, and style to fit your daily routine.

    1. Comfortable Yet Stylish Jeans

Every mom needs a reliable pair of jeans. Opt for a high-rise style for comfort and versatility. Skinny or straight-leg cuts work well with various tops and shoes, giving you an easy base to build from. Look for jeans with a bit of stretch—they’ll provide comfort throughout the day, whether you’re on a grocery run or heading to a parent-teacher meeting.

        2. Go-To T-Shirts and Tops

A collection of well-fitted t-shirts in neutral colors is invaluable. Soft fabrics like cotton and jersey work best for all-day wear, and classic shades—white, gray, black—make mixing and matching with other pieces easy. Layer these tops with jackets or cardigans for effortless style.

Try adding a few blouses or button-up shirts to your rotation for a more tailored look. These tops can be dressed up with jeans or layered under a blazer for a polished yet approachable look.

        3. Practical Dresses

Dresses are a quick way to look put together with minimal effort. Look for a versatile shirt dress, wrap dress, or A-line that flatters your shape and works for both casual and slightly more formal settings. With so many options in UK plus-sized clothing from froxx.co.uk, finding a dress that fits comfortably and makes you feel confident is easier than ever.

        4. Stretchy, Stylish Leggings

Leggings have become a staple for moms because they’re practical, easy to move in, and can be dressed up or down. A high-quality pair in black or gray can be paired with longer tops, oversized sweaters, or even layered under dresses when the weather cools. Look for leggings made with a thicker material so they’re less transparent and offer added support.

        5. Layer-Ready Cardigans and Sweaters

Cardigans and cozy sweaters are great layering options, especially for colder days. A neutral-toned cardigan adds warmth to your outfit without feeling too bulky and works well over dresses, tees, and blouses. For extra style points, choose a long cardigan that falls below the hip—it’s a flattering cut and ideal for busy days.

        6. A Casual Blazer

A blazer is perfect for adding polish to your look, even if you’re just heading out for a quick coffee or doing a school drop-off. A well-fitted blazer in a neutral shade like navy, gray, or black can easily dress up jeans, tees, or even a simple dress. It’s a great way to feel effortlessly chic.

        7. Comfortable Shoes That Go the Distance

Look for stylish yet comfortable footwear to support you all day. Sneakers, ankle boots, or a classic pair of flats are all great options that offer comfort without sacrificing style. Opt for neutral colors so you can easily match them with different outfits.

        8. Functional Outerwear

A lightweight jacket for spring and fall or a warm coat for winter is essential. Choose outerwear that is practical for the weather in your area, with features like water resistance or a removable hood. Classic options like a denim jacket, trench coat, or parka are versatile and stylish.

        9. Crossbody Bag or Backpack

A hands-free bag is essential for moms on the go. A crossbody bag or backpack keeps your essentials close while allowing you to move freely. Choose a style with multiple compartments to help keep your items organized and accessible.

        10. Accessories to Elevate Your Look

Accessories are an easy way to add personality to your look. Think about adding a few go-to scarves, a stylish watch, or simple jewelry pieces. Accessories like a statement necklace or a colorful scarf can make a basic outfit feel more intentional and put together.

Building a Wardrobe That Works for You

Choosing wardrobe essentials that fit your lifestyle and provide comfort and flexibility will make a big difference in your day-to-day routine. Each piece should serve a purpose, bringing you confidence and style as you navigate your busy life. With a wardrobe built for convenience and versatility, looking put-together can be both simple and satisfying, empowering you to take on each day with ease.
