A Night We’ll Never Forget: Alycia’s Kitchen Accident

It’s been seven weeks since that fateful night when Alycia had a freakish kitchen mishap that almost cost her a finger. The memory of that night still haunts me, but time has begun to heal the emotional wounds. I’ve kept a photo from that night, taken in the ER of the first hospital we rushed to. I never had the desire to post it on my blog because it’s too graphic, and looking at it brings back the traumatic experience. But as time goes by, I feel more ready to share what happened.

For those of you who missed my my post in early June 2024 on the accident, I’ll do a quick recap here.

It was a Thursday night, 6 June 2024. That night started off like any other. Alycia was in the kitchen washing a glass container after eating mangoes that I had cut for her. Suddenly, there was a loud crash and a scream. Alycia was screaming to me that she had a very deep cut on her finger and it was very painful. I rushed in to find Alycia holding her hand, blood pouring out from a deep cut on her finger. My heart sank, and I immediately knew we had to get her to the hospital.

I drove to the nearest hospital in our neighborhood, and the ride felt like an eternity. Alycia’s finger was wrapped in a thick towel and she was in so much pain. All I could do was try to keep her calm and told her that whatever it is, the doctors will surely be able to fix the finger. When we arrived, the ER staff quickly attended to her. The doctor examined her finger and informed us that it was badly injured and she required surgery in the OT to save it. My heart broke hearing those words. The doctor gave Alycia an anti-tetanus jab and bandaged up the wound.

From this hospital, we went to two other hospitals and were told that most of the private hospitals in the Klang Valley had no more rooms, even for ’emergency’ cases. I don’t know how serious an emergency case had to be in order to get a room but thank God, we finally got a room at SJMC after midnight. I guess Alycia’s injury was considered serious enough to warrant a room. She stayed in the hospital for 3 nights and was discharged on Sunday.

I managed to take a photo of Alycia in the ER, with her hand being treated. It’s a very bloody and gory image, and I’ve blurred out the doctor’s face for privacy. The photo captures the severity of the injury, and looking at it reminds me of the fear and helplessness I felt that night. But as difficult as it is to look at, it also reminds me of Alycia’s strength and resilience.

Now, seven weeks later, Alycia is finally free from the splint and bandage. Her finger is still a bit stiff, and she has to do finger exercises to regain full mobility. We’re hoping she won’t need to see a physiotherapist, but we’re prepared for whatever comes next. Alycia is determined to recover fully, and I’m confident she will. Her next appointment to see the hand & microsurgery doctor is this Friday.

Time has a way of healing wounds, both physical and emotional. Sharing this story again and the photo feels like a step towards moving past the trauma of that night. Alycia’s courage and perseverance continue to inspire me, and I’m grateful for the support and care she received from the medical staff and our family.

Alycia’s shirt had so much blood on it that I threw it away. I couldn’t bring myself to wash it.

Stylish and Practical: The Perfect Wardrobe for Teachers

If you’re going to start a new job as a teacher, you’ll probably want to know if there are specific teacher clothes that you should wear to appear professional but are also comfortable in front of a classroom full of students. You also have to consider whether the school you’re going to teach has air-conditioned classrooms or just ceiling fans. This way, you can shop for clothes that are appropriate for the temperature and setting in the classrooms. For example, if the classrooms only have ceiling fans and the weather is hot and humid, you should choose clothes made from light and breathable materials. If the classrooms have air-conditioners, then you can wear a cardigan or jacket over your clothes.

While students from most schools have uniforms, the teacher has to choose a suitable outfit every day.  From teacher t-shirts to teacher dresses, having comfortable, stylish, and practical clothing can make a significant difference in your teaching experience.  Let’s see how teachers can make sensible clothing choices and how you can be stylish while also maintaining a consummate professional image.

Versatile Teacher Shirts

Teacher shirts are one of the most versatile clothing items in an educator’s closet..  These shirts are versatile as they pair well with any bottom – pants and skirts, allowing flexibility to mix and match for different looks. When choosing a teacher’s shirt, choose designs with practical features such as pockets and button-down styles, which can be handy for carrying stationery items or adjusting for comfort

Graphic tees with educational themes, humor, or inspirational quotes are popular among teachers as they add a touch of personality, and humor and also serve to educate your students.

Modest Yet Stylish Teacher Dresses

Teacher dresses should be modest yet stylish. Look for dresses with practical features and cutting, such as pockets to place small stationery items, comfortable material, and A-line or fit-and-flare style for ease of moving about swiftly. Choose dresses with modest hemlines such as knee-length, midi, or below-knee. Also, choose dresses in versatile colors and patterns for easy pairing with cardigans, jackets, and accessories to create different looks.

Fun and Functional Back-to-School Shirts

Back-to-school shirts are an amusing way to kick off the new school year and show your love for teaching. These shirts often feature playful designs or catchlines that celebrate the start of a new academic year. They can be worn on the first day of school or during special school events to help create a positive and welcoming atmosphere for your students.

Conclusion

Owning a consummate collection of clothes appropriate for a teacher is essential for creating a versatile and practical wardrobe. Invest in tailored pants, skirts in modest hemlines, modest blouses, teacher shirts, and fit-and-flare dresses. Consider smart jogger pants and jeans for more relaxed days or special occasions like the school’s sports day, jogathon days and field trips. Also, consider investing in comfortable shoes as teachers spend a great amount of time on their feet.

With a collection of comfortable, durable, practical and stylish clothes appropriate for a teacher, you can slay the day and tackle both the challenges in the classroom and school with confidence and style.

Camera Crumbs

Last Saturday hubby had to work in the evening and couldn’t have dinner with us. Weekends are the only days that he gets to eat with us but if he has work, I will settle the girls’ dinner.

As I was busy and also lazy to cook and drive out for dinner, I ordered food from Shopee Food. I ordered Vietnamese noodle salad with grilled lemongrass chicken from Pho Viet for Alycia and Sherilyn. For Cass, she chose to order something different as I’ve always been ordering the same thing from Pho Viet. I’ve ordered food from other restaurants previously but none of the food really satisfied us as much as the food from Pho Viet. For food delivery orders, the food always didn’t taste as good as when eaten at the restaurant. Pho Viet is the only restaurant that never failed to satisfy us.

So Cass spent the morning browsing her Shopee app and finally ordered noodles in fish maw soup from one Yat Tong restaurant @ Kuchai Lama. I kept dissuading Cass not to order soupy noodles as I am not comfortable with hot soup being placed in plastic bags or containers. But this stubborn girl went ahead to order – with me paying 🙄

The noodles and soup were very impressive. The soup was packed in a single-use thick plastic pouch with a cap, which was leak-proof and very unique. The fish maw soup tasted and looked almost identical to the golden fish maw soup from Haidilao. The noodles had a generous serving of lean pork slices and bursting balls.

Fish maw noodles soup from Yat Tong restaurant, Kuchai Lama. Very tasty but I find the bursting balls very salty.

Cass also pan fried some meat dumplings to go with her bowl of soupy noodles.

Our greedy girl hoping to get a treat from her sister but nope, we don’t give her anything that’s salty.

Takeaway fish maw soup stored in this thick leak-proof plastic pouch with a sealed cap.

Supermoon on Monday. The moon was actually super huge but appears small in photo. My younger brother stays at one of the 3-block condos opposite ours. He recently moved in. It’s about 5-10 minutes’ walk from my condo.

New skirts from Shein. I didn’t intend to post the photos here. I took the photos to write a review on the Shein website to earn points (money). But I’m very pleased with the hot pink ruched bodycon short skirt and black midi tight skirt with thigh-high slit, thus my posting here to share. Both the skirts cost no more than RM80 and the quality is very good.

Level Up Your Fitness Wardrobe with High-Quality Gym Clothes

The right gym clothing can help you to achieve your fitness goals. High-quality workout apparel boosts your confidence and enhances your workout experience and performance. Here’s a guide to exercise-friendly clothes that can elevate your fitness regimen.

Comfortable Workout Shirts

A good workout shirt with a comfortable bottom is essential for any fitness routine.  The range of workout shirts from Iron Panda Fit is crafted with style and comfort in mind. Whether you’re jamming the gym, or yoga studio, hitting the tarmac, or engaging in HIIT, Iron Panda Fit has everything you need to provide the comfort and support you need to perform optimally.

When choosing tees for your workout, opt for tees made from lightweight and sweat-wicking materials to prevent overheating and ensure you’re comfortable throughout your workout sessions.   Try to avoid wearing heavy clothes as this can cause quicker exhaustion, shorter workouts, and less efficiency throughout.  Baggy clothes can get tangled in a gym machine you’re using and you will find it harder to monitor your movements whereas tight clothes may be suffocating and restrict your movements.

Graphic Gym Tees for a Trendy Look

If you’re the type who likes to add a touch of character to your gym clothes, graphic gym tees are a great choice. These tees are aesthetically designed with eye-catching graphics, witty humor, or inspirational quotes. Wearing tees that express your perspective or motto can give you that extra motivation to reach your workout goals with vigour.

Unisex Scoop Bottom Cotton Tank

Opt For Performance Shorts for Optimal Mobility

Men’s performance shorts are crafted to provide the wearer with maximum comfort and mobility. Selecting bottoms designed with sweat-wicking technology is essential to keep you dry and comfortable. Choose lightweight and stretchy materials to enable you to perform a full range of motion, whatever the workout. You may also wish to choose shorts with pockets to put small essential items when you work out.

Men’s Performance Training Shorts With Hidden Pocket

Women’s Gym Crop Tops for Comfort and Style

If you want to combine fashion, function, and comfort during a workout, women’s gym crop tops are the perfect choice.  Crop tops enable you to move more freely and concentrate on your workout while keeping you cool. Your body temperature rises when you exercise and you start to sweat profusely. A crop top allows heat to escape from your midsection, keeping you cooler faster, and more comfortable. Wear a comfortable sports bra underneath and you’re all set to achieve your fitness goals.

Women Gym Crop Tops

Conclusion

Investing in better-quality gym shirts and apparel can bring about a notable difference in your workout performance and overall experience. You will feel more confident in your appearance and working out will be more enjoyable. Roundup of Updates For The Week

My lasered foot for the removal of a viral wart is almost healed (about 98%). It’s no longer in multiple layers of plaster, bandage and cling wrap but only in a plaster. I can walk pretty normally now but I am still wary of putting too much pressure on the wound as it is not 100% closed up yet. I’ve not started to run yet, but walking a lot more than I did two weeks ago.

This is how my foot looked a week ago. The reason why I used plastic food cling wrap to wrap the area is because the plaster does not stick on well to the heel. Because of the location of the wound, it’s hard for the plaster to stick securely, thus the use of cling wrap.

Picture on top – the wound as of 25 July 2024 vs. wound on 11 July 2024 at the bottom.

I decided not to put any food photos in this post as food and graphic wound photos just don’t chime in.🤮 No matter how delicious the food may look, it won’t look appetizing next to a bloody wound.😜

Here’s the link to the You Tube video of Sherilyn’s dance cover for the song Gyubin – Really Like You by her dance studio. It’s a Kpop dance performed in The Starhill, KL last week.

Update on Alycia’s Injured Finger: A Six-Week Journey to Recovery

Friday, 19 July 2024 ~ Today marks exactly six weeks since Alycia’s freakish kitchen mishap that almost cost her a finger. The journey has been long and painful, but we are finally seeing some progress.

After six weeks of keeping her injured finger in a splint and her entire left hand wrapped in a big bandage, Alycia finally had them removed. I could feel her relief too! The moment was a significant milestone in her recovery. While the finger is still stiff, removing the splint and bandage is a positive step forward. Alycia must now focus on finger exercises to regain mobility. The surgeon commented that the stiffness on the finger is caused by scars on the tendons as well as scars on the skin.

Despite the progress, Alycia’s finger is not out of the woods yet. If there is not much improvement in two weeks, she may have to see a physiotherapist twice a week. To avoid this, which adds to the cost and time, I constantly remind Alycia to diligently perform her finger exercises. We are hopeful that with consistent effort, her finger’s mobility will improve, and she can avoid additional therapy.

After the doctor’s appointment, we decided to celebrate Alycia’s progress with a lunch at SJMC’s cafe. Alycia ordered lasagna, which she said tasted very much like the one her dad makes in his central kitchen. It was a comforting and delicious meal after weeks of hospital visits and treatments.

To further celebrate the removal of the splint and bandage, Alycia requested a sofuto from Family Mart. She chose a matcha sofuto, her favorite. It was a small but meaningful treat to mark a big step in her recovery journey.

While Alycia still has a bit of a journey ahead, the removal of the splint and bandage is a significant milestone. We are optimistic that with continued finger exercises, she will regain full mobility in her injured finger.

Hubby kept telling us that he had a similar accident when he cut his third finger with a pen knife when he was 17 years old. This resulted in his finger being stitched up in a clinic. That was 36 years ago and in those days, accidents like this did not require reconstruction in the OT or physiotherapy. After the accident, he could not bend his third finger for a long time and it took him over a year before he could finally bend it. He reassured Alycia that her finger would regain full mobility in time to come.

Injuries can be a tough test of patience and resilience, but Alycia has shown remarkable strength throughout her recovery journey. With the splint and bandage now off, we are hopeful for continued progress. The next couple of weeks are crucial, and we will be there every step of the way to support Alycia. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and no need for physiotherapy.

The doctor going through the sets of finger exercises with Alycia. Thank God the removal of the splint wasn’t as painful as the removal of stitches, which were done two weeks ago.

This eco-friendly & green-concept restaurant at the lobby of the Outpatient Centre serves affordable, tasty, and freshly prepared Western & Asian food. The cafe is clean and comfy.

Family-Friendly Weddings: What to Consider

Planning a wedding can be stressful enough without having to accommodate the needs of children and extended family members. However, with some thoughtful planning and preparation, you can create a wedding celebration that is enjoyable for guests of all ages. Here are some tips for putting together a family-friendly wedding that will be memorable for everyone involved.

  1. Choosing Activities for Kids

When kids are part of the guest list, it’s important to have activities planned to keep them engaged and entertained throughout the day. Set up a supervised kids’ area with crafts and games, and even hire a professional babysitter or two to oversee activities. Have toys on hand like colouring books and board games so kids can have fun while parents mingle and dance. Consider scheduling dedicated times for kids’ activities like face painting or lawn games before the ceremony or during cocktail hour.

  1. Providing Guest Accommodation

If you’ll have lots of out-of-town guests, especially those travelling with children, arrange for affordable local accommodations like discounted hotel blocks, rental homes, or campgrounds. This gives families more flexibility and convenience as they won’t have to worry about driving long distances late at night after the reception ends. Provide guests with a list of family-friendly restaurants, parks, museums, and other attractions in the area they can enjoy as well.

  1. Choosing the Right Menu

Cater your reception menu to appeal to all ages and tastes. Include kid-friendly fare like chicken fingers, mac and cheese, and fresh fruit. You can even add a separate kids’ buffet table if you want. For adult guests, offer selections like steak, salmon, pasta, and hearty sides. And don’t forget dessert—cupcakes and ice cream sundaes are always crowd-pleasers! Having options ensures every guest can find something appealing.

  1. Picking the Perfect Venue

When kids and extended family are involved, you’ll likely need more space than for an intimate adults-only affair. Consider outdoor or rural venues where kids can run around freely and safely. Barns, farms, parks, and gardens provide beautiful backdrops for family weddings. Shropshire offers a wealth of stunning rural wedding venues perfect for larger gatherings.

Shropshire’s top wedding venue provides fabulous settings to host your family celebration in the countryside. With Shropshire weddings, you can find the ideal venue for your special day. From grand estates to quaint halls, weddings in Shropshire offer spacious outdoor areas for kids and large banquet halls to accommodate your guest list.

  1. Entertainment for All

It’s important to have entertainment and music that appeals to both kids and adults. Consider hiring a magician or caricature artist to delight kids during the cocktail hour. For dancing, opt for a DJ or band that plays hits across multiple decades and genres. You can even get the kids involved by adding classic party games like limbo or karaoke. The key is having a variety of interactive entertainment to keep all guests engaged.

Planning a family-friendly wedding does take some extra forethought and effort. However, choosing the right venue, menu, entertainment, and activities can result in a celebration that delights guests of all ages.

Sherilyn’s Grueling Schedule: Balancing Back-to-Back College Assignments

Sherilyn is in the final stretch of her 1-year Foundation in Natural & Built Environments course, with plans to begin her degree studies in September. As the end of the foundation year approaches, the workload has become increasingly intense, leaving her with little to no time for herself. The relentless projects and assignments have taken a toll on her sleep, leaving her exhausted and overwhelmed. On top of her studies, she is very much involved in dancing, rehearsals, and video shooting. Dancing is her first love and will always be.

The demands of the foundation course have been relentless. Sherilyn has been working tirelessly on back-to-back assignments, barely catching a moment to rest. The past two weeks have been particularly challenging, with little to no sleep as she races against deadlines. A few nights ago, she was still at college at 3:30 a.m., working on a project with her course mates. Despite my worries, I knew she was dedicated to completing her work. Whenever she or Alycia are not back home yet, I won’t be able to sleep well too. So I am also battling sleep deprivation.

After submitting one assignment (drawing of floor plans and site layout), another challenging project awaited Sherilyn. This time, her task involved creating something out of a big bunch of matches, air-dry clay, red papers, fire lighters and sharp cutting tools. For two days, our apartment was transformed into a makeshift workshop, filled with the smell of smoke and ashes from burning matches and papers. The air was thick with fumes, and our air purifier was working overtime to clear the air, with numbers in air quality rising to three digits. As someone with OCD, the mess and chaos drove me to my limits, and I found myself nagging non-stop and yet helping Sherilyn clean up the aftermath despite dealing with a painful right tennis elbow and a post-surgery left foot.

While I was frustrated with the mess and the strain it placed on my own health, I understood the pressure Sherilyn was under. I am still asking her if an architectural course is truly her passion, given the relentless workload and sacrifices it demands.

After pulling two all-nighters, Sherilyn is finally submitting her assignment in college today. I hope she can get some much-needed rest and sleep before the next round of assignments begins. It’s been a grueling journey, but her hard work and perseverance are commendable. As her mother, I am incredibly proud of her dedication and resilience, even if it means enduring sleepless nights and a chaotic home environment.

As Sherilyn prepares to transition from her foundation year to her degree studies, I hope she finds a better balance between her academic responsibilities and personal well-being. The road ahead in an architectural course will undoubtedly be challenging, but I believe in her ability to navigate it with the same determination and strength she has shown so far. Even if she decided to drop architectural and pursue another degree course after the Foundation course, I will support her decision.

Here’s to hoping for more organized projects and less smoke-filled rooms, messy dining table, and dirty floors in our house in the future!

Super messy dining table.

Burnt match sticks on the left and match sticks sprayed with black paint on the right. The ensemble, along with burnt red papers is supposed to create some kind of aesthetic design, I guess.

Burnt match sticks, which looked like some mushrooms.

Carefully burning the edges of some folded red papers.

Now I know why many students gave up the architectural course mid way as it’s not easy. I don’t think it’s easy.

Why Consuming Too Many Refined Foods is Bad for Us

We all love burgers and sausages and takeaways, but eating large amounts of refined and processed foods can negatively impact our health in several ways. Here are 5 key reasons why we should be mindful of overdoing refined foods.

1. Nutrient Deficiency

Overly refined foods like white bread and white rice have had the nutritious bran and germ removed during processing. This leaves only the starchy endosperm, stripped of beneficial fibre, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds.

Eating too many refined grains can lead to deficiencies in iron, magnesium, zinc, folate and other essential micronutrients over time. This is especially true if refined grains make up the bulk of your carbohydrate intake, rather than whole grains. Choosing whole grain versions like whole wheat bread and brown rice provides more complete nutrition.

2. Blood Sugar Spikes

When refined grains are consumed, they are quickly broken down into sugar during digestion. This leads to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Foods high in sugar like sweets, soda and juice have a similar effect.

Over the long run, frequent blood sugar spikes can increase your risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. The fibre in whole grains causes their carbohydrates to be digested more slowly, for a gentler impact on blood sugar.

3. Inflammation

Refined oils like soybean, corn, sunflower and canola oils are often used in processed foods. These oils are high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. Excessive omega-6 intake promotes bodily inflammation, which has been linked to chronic diseases.

Additionally, the refining process strips away antioxidants like vitamin E that can combat inflammation. Eating too many refined foods means you’ll miss out on antioxidants from whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

4. Gut Health Imbalance

The lack of fibre in refined foods can alter the balance of gut bacteria, promote intestinal inflammation, and contribute to constipation. This disrupts our digestive health.

It can also allow candida, a fungus that lives in the gut, to thrive. Candida feeds on sugar and can cause an overgrowth if too much refined sugar is consumed. A candida overgrowth leads to candida symptoms like bloating, cramping and diarrhoea.

Take a candida test if you think this might be a problem for you.

Prebiotic fibres from whole plant foods support a diversity of beneficial gut bacteria. This improves gut balance and intestinal health.

5. Other Health Issues

There are additional concerning health effects tied to overeating refined foods such as:

  • Increased risk for heart disease due to the trans fats and low omega-3s in many processed foods
  • Higher cholesterol levels as a result of refined carbohydrates and damaged fats
  • Possible decreased cognitive function and dementia resulting from nutrient deficiencies
  • Greater chance of depression and anxiety due to blood sugar fluctuations and inflammation
  • Higher likelihood of acne and skin conditions because of high glycemic diets and food sensitivities
  • Greater exposure to food additives, emulsifiers and preservatives that may impact health

Limiting refined foods as part of an overall balanced, nutritious diet can go a long way in supporting our health and preventing chronic disease.

The One House Chore My Hubby Loves

My hubby is not the type who readily engages in household chores. With his demanding work schedule, his evenings are often reserved for unwinding by watching videos on his phone. However, there is one chore he secretly loves: ironing clothes. Despite his busy and tiring days, he dedicates at least half an hour to an hour each week to this task, ironing his clothes and our daughters’ clothes without complaint.

It’s quite endearing to see my hubby who is a neat-freak meticulously ironing each piece of clothing. He doesn’t mind doing it and takes pride in the result. Fortunately for him, I prefer buying wrinkle-free clothes, so he doesn’t have to iron my clothes as much. But even when I do leave a few pieces on the ironing rack, he will still iron them for me, showing his affection through this small yet significant gesture.

Last year, he made a surprising purchase that further revealed his secret love for ironing.  After dinner at Bangsar Shopping Centre, he wandered into a luxury home living products shop that specializes in ironing boards, pedal dustbins, bathroom and kitchen assortment. None of us anticipated that he would buy something so extravagant, especially from a household products boutique. But to our amazement, he emerged from the shop holding a jumbo-sized Brabantia ironing board under his armpit that cost  RM400! This luxurious ironing board has become his pride and joy. With its spacious surface and sturdy build, it has made ironing an even more enjoyable experience for him.

In a way, ironing has become his little escape. It’s a task that allows him to focus and unwind. I think that to him, there’s something meditative about smoothing out the wrinkles, transforming crumpled fabric into perfectly pressed garments. He might not admit it outright, but I can see that he genuinely enjoys this chore 😆. His face lights up with a sense of accomplishment after he’s done, and there’s a certain satisfaction in his eyes as he hangs up the freshly ironed clothes.

While my hubby might never admit it, I know that ironing brings him a sense of satisfaction and peace. And I couldn’t be more grateful for the small but significant way he contributes to our home.

Jumbo sized Brabantia ironing board. I still don’t know how to operate it. According to Alycia, there’s a button somewhere to open and close the board.

The hole where the viral wart used to be is healing well 🙏. Bleeding is minimal and there’s not much pain when I walk given that I am still tip-toeing on my left foot. I am hopeful that I can start to exercise again with brisk walking by next week.

Lunch and dinner for everyone today ~ air-fried ribeye steak, steamed egg, pumpkin and veggies. Cass added Mizuna salad to her bowl.

Hubby bought 6 thick slabs of ribeye steak and we still have 2.5 pieces left. The girls are very happy that they get to eat steak three days straight.

I just discovered that air-fried steak tastes as good as pan-fried ones and it’s so much easier with air-frying. There’s no oil splatter and washing is minimal.

Method: marinate steak with Lea & Perrins sauce, soy sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, McCormick Season All Seasoned Salt (optional). NO oil is needed for frying.

For well done steak, air-fry for 10 minutes at 190C. Turn off power. Let sit in the air-fryer for 5 minutes before serving. No flipping to the other side is needed.

For medium rare, air-fry for 8 minutes at 190C. Turn off power. Let sit for 5 minutes. No flipping to the other side is needed.

In the afternoon, hubby surprised us with a box of pastries from Dou Dou Bake . 💞

Cinnamon bun, chewy chocolate chunk sea salt cookie, rose pistachio escargot and almond croissant.

Double chocolate tart.

My Experience with Laser Surgery for a Viral Wart

On Thursday, 11 July 2024, I underwent a laser surgery to remove a stubborn viral wart on my left foot. The procedure took place in the Procedure Room of the consultation suite at Sunway Medical Centre. The procedure started at 12 noon sharp, and by 12:15 p.m., it was all over. It was an outpatient procedure.

The dermatologist instructed me to lie on my right side so she could easily access my left foot. Before administering the two Local Anesthetic (LA) injections, she sprayed a numbing spray on the site. The spray was freezing cold, making my foot almost numb. She quickly followed with the LA jabs. The first jab was excruciatingly painful, and I cringed in agony. The second jab, though still painful, was slightly more bearable. Both jabs lasted for about 6-7 seconds. After the LA jabs were administered, the doctor reassured me that the worst part was over.

The Laser Procedure

After ensuring that I couldn’t feel any pain on the wart site, the doctor began the laser procedure. She explained each step as she worked. I felt no pain during the laser treatment, only a tugging sensation on my foot. The room was filled with the smell of burning, which was the carbon dioxide (CO2) from the laser and my burnt skin and flesh. I could see bits of white debris flying, which I assumed was my skin. I also heard the sound of a vacuum cleaner, likely a suction machine to suck away the burnt skin debris. I stayed still and avoided moving my body to look at what the doctor was doing.

At 12:15 p.m., the doctor announced that the procedure was over. She mentioned that I might feel pain after two hours, but thankfully, I experienced no post-surgery pain. My foot was bandaged, and I was instructed to keep it dry for two days. If it got wet, I was to apply Murozin ointment on the wound and re-bandage it.

The cost of the laser surgery cost RM750. After adding up the consultation charges last week and post-surgery consultation in two weeks’ time, the total cost would be around RM1,500. I hope my insurance will approve this claim.

Post-Surgery Care

Despite three layers of protection—a cotton crepe bandage, a layer of plastic food cling wrap, and a plastic bag covering my foot—the outside of the plaster was still slightly damp after my shower. However, the plaster is water-resistant, so my wound was still dry. Showering without wetting my left foot was quite a challenge. I sat on a backless, armless chair, trying to keep my left leg up at a 90-degree angle by resting on the wall. After my shower, I changed the plaster and bandage and finally saw my wound. There was a large hole where the wart had been, with some blood oozing out 😮. It was a gory sight, but I had to dress the wound myself. Thankfully, Sherilyn was there to help me with the flimsy op-site plaster.

I thought hard about whether I should post a photo of my lasered foot and I think I shouldn’t, not at the moment. It can be too creepy and disturbing to some.

The next day, I improved my showering technique. I used a non-slip rubber plastic chair with arms and back support, hanging my left leg on the armrest. This time, the bandage stayed quite dry, though I changed it anyway due to some slight blood stains. Although the doctor advised keeping the wound dry for two days, I plan to keep it dry for longer. The hole looks deep and scary, and I can’t risk getting it infected.

After two days of showering with my left leg up at almost 90 degrees and walking on my toes to avoid putting pressure on the wound on the side of the heel, I now have an achy leg.

Conclusion

The laser surgery to remove my viral wart was a brief but intense experience. The pain from the LA jabs was significant, but the actual laser procedure was painless. The post-surgery care has been a challenge, but I am managing with careful bandaging. I hope for a smooth recovery, free from infection, and that new flesh and skin will grow back to cover the hole in my foot. This journey has been tough, but I am optimistic about the healing process and look forward to walking pain-free again.

Photo on the right – pre surgery. The wart looks unsuspicious but it caused me a lot of pain when I walked or applied pressure on it. Viral warts take a very long time to go away on its own, it could take years. But when waiting isn’t an option and over-the-counter treatments failed, like in my case, it’s best to consult a dermatologist.

This will be my footwear fashion for the next one week.

This non-slip chair with arm-rest and back-rest is a life-savior for post-surgery patients when they want to keep certain parts of their body dry. Hubby bought this chair for his mum to sit on during shower after her cataract surgeries two years ago.

10 July 2024 ~ Update on the Viral Wart on My Left Foot

The past few days have been a whirlwind of trying desperately to get my insurance to approve the laser procedure to remove the viral wart on my left foot. After several phone calls to my insurance agent and dermatologist, I have to accept that my insurance will most likely NOT cover this procedure. However, my insurance agent advised me to submit my claim, and I hope that it will be approved by the insurance as the wart removal by laser is not for aesthetic purposes.

The Insurance Battle

Navigating through insurance claims has been a daunting task. Despite the clear need for the procedure due to the pain and difficulty walking, my insurance company is reluctant to approve it. I spent hours explaining my situation to my insurance agent, hoping for some understanding and flexibility. My dermatologist has also provided detailed reports and an appeal letter to support my case, but the outcome remains uncertain.

Mentally Preparing for the Procedure

As someone with a low pain threshold, the thought of the laser procedure is quite intimidating. The idea of enduring several Local Anesthetic jabs and laser zaps fills me with anxiety. However, I am mentally ready to take on the pain. The 4 months of pain that I was in with every step I took is nothing compared to just 15-20 minutes of pain tomorrow. I have gone through 5 major abdomen surgeries in my life and I know I will survive tomorrow.

Finding Strength in Perspective

Over the past four months, every step I took was a reminder of the persistent pain from the wart. Walking became a challenge, and everyday activities were marred by discomfort. I have not exercised for more than a month ever since the wart started to hurt badly when pressured is applied on the foot. Comparing this prolonged agony to the brief pain of the procedure puts things into perspective. Enduring a few minutes of discomfort for long-term relief is a small price to pay, though I will have to be prepared to pay between RM1k – 2k out of my pocket for this procedure at Sunway Medical Centre.

The Anticipation of Being Pain-Free

The thought of walking without pain is incredibly motivating. The past few months have been difficult, but the promise of relief is within reach. I am looking forward to regaining my mobility and enjoying activities that I had to forgo due to the pain. The anticipation of being pain-free keeps me strong and determined.

Conclusion

Tomorrow is the day of the procedure, and while I am nervous, I am also hopeful. The journey to this point has been filled with challenges, from dealing with insurance to managing pain. However, I am ready to face the final hurdle. Please pray for me as I undergo the laser procedure. Your support means the world to me, and I hope to come out of this stronger and pain-free.

This photo popped up on my Google Photos a few days ago. Taken exactly 12 year ago, Sherilyn was 7 and Cass was 4. They were my models for my online store (for 10 years) where I sold clothes and kids stuff. I do miss them a lot at this age. Still like babies, they were way more obedient, cute, talkative and told me everything. It’s quite the opposite now 🥹

The Journey Behind the Gold

Cass’ recent achievement at the recent Skate Malaysia 2024 is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and perseverance. Winning a gold medal was not just about her graceful one-minute performance on the ice. Behind the perfect one-minute performance is something no one would know if they didn’t ask. It was about the countless hours of practice every day, the sacrifices, the lack of sleep, the tears, injuries, physiotherapy sessions, and the determination that led up to that moment.

The Road to Victory: Daily Practice and Self-Discipline

Behind every flawless performance are countless hours of practice. Cass’ journey was no different. She dedicated herself to daily practice, both on and off the ice. This included self-learning sessions where she would watch videos, attend online courses conducted by accomplished skaters from overseas, analyze techniques, and practice tirelessly to perfect her moves. Her commitment to the sport meant early mornings, late nights, and a schedule packed with skating lessons and self-training.

Overcoming Obstacles: Injuries and Physiotherapy

The path to success is rarely smooth, and Cass faced her share of obstacles. Injuries are an unfortunate part of any sport, and ice skating is no exception. Cass had to deal with injuries, including a lateral sprain on her ankle just three weeks before the competition. This required physiotherapy sessions and a temporary halt to her training. I thought that she would have to skip Skate Malaysia 2024. However, her determination saw her through these tough times, and she managed to recover enough to compete, though not at 100%.  Last year she fell during training and injured her back. Off she went for physiotherapy again and after the fall, I bought her butt guard pants.  Weeks before she fell, I dreamt that she fell on ice, and in my dream, I saw how she fell – she was spinning when she fell hard on the ice and flipped several times. It was every mother’s nightmare!

The Financial Commitment: An Expensive Sport

Ice skating is an expensive sport, especially if you decide to compete. The costs of rink time, coaching, equipment, costume, choreography fees, extra lessons, competition participation fees, miscellaneous fees, and physiotherapy add up quickly. Even downloading a song for her routine had a price tag to it.  As parents, we had to make sacrifices to support Cass’ dreams. This meant cutting back on other expenses and prioritizing her skating needs. Despite the financial strain, seeing her passion and growth made every sacrifice worthwhile.

The Transformation: Shaping Character and Discipline

Beyond the medals and accolades, ice skating has profoundly shaped Cass’ character. The discipline required to excel in the sport has translated into other areas of her life. She has become more focused, responsible, better at time management, and resilient. The lessons learned on the ice have made her a more disciplined individual, ready to face life’s challenges head-on.
