A Week of Whirlwind Adventures: From Passport Renewal to Last-Minute Travel Changes

This past week has been a whirlwind of activity, filled with everything from passport renewals to last-minute travel changes. To top it all off, I was down with a cold and a blocked nose, no thanks to the flu bugs from the mil and Sherilyn.

The week kicked off with a mission to renew my passport, a crucial step in preparing for an upcoming overseas holiday. However, the journey to the Immigration Department was not without its challenges. Despite waking up early on Monday and attempting to secure a queue number via the QMS app on my phone, I found myself thwarted by the limited availability of slots. By 6.30am, the numbers for all three UTC offices (Pudu, Keramat and Sentul) were already snapped up.  I then enlisted the help of Alycia the following morning to help me stay glued to the phone to grab a queue number, and after a few hiccups, we managed to secure a spot at UTC Keramat, albeit not the location I initially intended. Hubby and I were hoping to get a queue number at UTC Pudu.

Fortunately, the waiting time at UTC Keramat was pretty fast. When we arrived at 8.30 a.m., the number that was called out was 9005 and my number was 9032, while hubby’s number was 9064. Within one hour, my passport was done and collected. I am impressed with the efficiency of the staff.

At the UTC Keramat Immigration office.

There’s a camera booth at every counter for instant photo-taking.

No cash and eWallet will be accepted for payment. Remember to bring along your credit card or debit card!

With passports in hand, the focus now shifted to planning our holiday. Alycia was eager to make the most of her semester break, and together we scoured for overseas tours. Meanwhile, amidst the hustle and bustle, I lent a helping hand to my mother-in-law as she prepared for her journey to Hong Kong and London. She will be away for four months. From organizing travel insurance to running last-minute errands for her, it was a flurry of activity before her departure.  Alycia also went to Hong Kong, albeit on a different flight from her grandma.  Alycia took Air Asia while the mil boarded Cathay Pacific, an hour difference in take-off time. Alycia will be spending a week in Hong Kong.

As plans for our trip began to take shape, fate threw us a curveball. A visit to the travel agency on Wednesday to book our Seoul trip ended in dismay as soaring airfares dashed our hopes of a getaway within my budget (RM12k for the entire trip). When the travel agency staff quoted me the price for two pax to Seoul, Korea a few days ago, it was about RM9k. But a few days later, the air fare shot up and now the price went up to about RM16k for the two of us. This is only for a 4D 3N stay in Seoul. It’s a crazy price to pay as in essence, we only have two full days in Seoul.

After we left the travel agency office, we walked to Pavillion KL for lunch at Ichiban. Alycia led the way with the help of Apple Maps, the default map system for iPhone. She used Apple Maps to help her get around Singapore when she was there recently for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert.

At the Sedunia Travel office in Bukit Bintang.

Despite our best efforts to find alternative options at Air Asia, the steep increase in prices during peak season left us reeling. The Air Asia’s flights are all at odd hours or with a stopover in Bangkok. April is spring time in Korea with sakura in full bloom and one of the best times to visit, thus the soar in air fare prices.  After much deliberation and consultation with my parents and hubby, a spontaneous decision was made to switch gears and opt for Bangkok instead. I am still determined to go to Korea but will have to do so during non-peak months.

I have tasked Alycia to do the homework of searching for hotels near the places that we plan to visit, restaurants, and other essential information needed for our holiday in Bangkok for 3 nights and 4 days. She’s now in Hong Kong and very eager to do the homework coz it’s something that’s fun.

Today, as I celebrate my 51st birthday, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of events that transpired throughout the week. Despite the challenges and unexpected changes, there’s a sense of excitement and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. With plans to book our air tickets to Bangkok and finalize accommodation in the coming days, I’m reminded that life’s greatest adventures often begin with a leap of faith and a willingness to embrace the unknown.

Embracing Wellness: My Journey Into Iyengar Yoga

Embarking on a journey toward wellness is often a step-by-step process, and for me, joining a yoga class has long been a dream waiting to be realized. After years of contemplation, last Thursday marked a significant milestone as I finally took the plunge and attended my trial class for Iyengar yoga. It was a moment of fulfillment, ticking off a cherished item from my bucket list.

My initial intention was to explore flow yoga, drawn to its dynamic movements and graceful transitions. However, timing and logistical challenges such as parking woes and traffic congestion led me to reconsider, ultimately opting for Iyengar yoga, which offered morning classes in a more accessible location with ample parking spaces.

Iyengar yoga, a form of hatha yoga, focuses on precise alignment and technique, emphasizing quality over quantity in each movement. Through slow, deliberate poses and controlled breathing, I discovered a practice that not only strengthens the body but also cultivates flexibility and improves posture.

During my trial class, I experienced firsthand the benefits of Iyengar yoga as my muscles were gently stretched and strengthened. The following day, I welcomed the pleasant ache in my muscles—a sign of progress and growth within my practice.

I opted for walk-in classes as this allows me the flexibility to attend sessions according to my schedule, albeit at a slightly higher fee of RM40 per session. While committing to weekly classes may be challenging, I am committed to prioritizing my well-being by making time for yoga whenever possible.

As I eagerly anticipate my second class tomorrow—a paid session—I reflect on the sense of accomplishment that accompanies each step forward in my wellness journey. Yoga has become more than just a physical practice; it’s a path toward holistic well-being and self-discovery.

And as I continue to explore the depths of yoga, another item on my bucket list is on the brink of becoming a reality—an overseas holiday. While details remain under wraps until my passport renewal is complete, the anticipation of embarking on this adventure fills me with excitement and anticipation.

Brunch after yoga at Sixteen with hubby. I ordered a sweet corn fritters plate with smoked salmon, salad and poached egg.

Hubby ordered his usual set – toasted sourdough bread with scrambled eggs and butter.

Beyond Beauty: Exploring the Impact of Personal Care Products on Health and Wellness

In the crowded personal care market, the allure of beauty often overshadows the potential impact these items can have on our health and wellness. The array of options is endless, from skincare potions promising eternal youth to hair care elixirs guaranteeing luscious locks.

Statista claims the United States is poised to witness significant growth in the Beauty & Personal Care market. The expected revenue is estimated to reach US$100.30 billion in 2024. On an individual level, this translates to an average expenditure of US$293.30 per person. Moreover, online sales are projected to contribute substantially to approximately 27.9% of the total revenue by 2024.

Understanding the industry’s magnitude is crucial as we explore the impact of personal care products on health. This understanding is crucial for consumers and society at large. Remember that sometimes, beneath the glossy packaging lies a complex landscape of ingredients that can profoundly influence our bodies and the environment.

In this article, we explore the intricate relationship between personal care products and our health and well-being.

Common Ingredients in Personal Care Products

The world of personal care products can be complex, filled with unfamiliar terms and a dizzying array of ingredients. But beneath the fancy names lie some basic categories that play essential roles in how these products function. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most common ones:

  • Base Ingredients: These form the foundation of the product, making up the bulk. Water is king here, but other elements like oils and waxes can also be used.
  • Functional Ingredients: These are the workhorses that target specific concerns. For example, sunscreens contain UV filters to protect skin, while moisturizers might contain hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate.
  • Emollients: These are like skin soothers. They soften and smooth the skin, leaving a pleasant feel. Common emollients include shea butter and mineral oil.
  • Surfactants: These are the cleaning powerhouses in shampoos, soaps, and facial cleansers. They help water and oil mix, washing away dirt and grime.
  • Preservatives: These unsung heroes prevent bacteria and mold growth, ensuring the safety and longevity of your products.
  • Fragrances and Dyes: These add to the sensory experience — the pleasant scents and colors we associate with personal care products.

Understanding these basic categories can empower you to make more informed choices when navigating the vast array of personal care options.

Skin Care Products

While skincare offers a path to healthy, glowing skin, it’s important to be mindful of the ingredients lurking within some products. Certain chemicals, while promoting specific benefits, can have unintended consequences.

  • Sulfates: These cleansing agents, often in shampoos and face washes, can strip away natural moisture, causing dryness and irritation.
  • Parabens: Often used as preservatives, parabens have been linked to potential hormonal disruptions, although research is ongoing. Paraben-free options are readily available for those seeking a more cautious approach.
  • Fragrances: The delightful scents we associate with skincare can sometimes be a mask for a multitude of chemicals. These can trigger allergies or sensitivities, causing redness, itching, and inflammation.
  • Retinol: A powerful anti-aging ingredient, retinol can be highly effective but potentially irritating, especially for sensitive skin. Patch testing and following proper application guidelines are crucial.

Healthline recommends avoiding certain ingredients in personal care products. These include oxybenzone, phthalates, formaldehyde, methyl and propyl parabens, PEGs (polyethylene glycols), and aluminum. These ingredients range from common allergens to potential carcinogens, with some linked to hormonal disruption.

Research on some ingredients is limited, and findings on others are mixed. It’s important to note that phthalates and certain parabens have been associated with hormonal disruption, while others may pose risks of carcinogenicity or skin irritation.

Hair Care Products

The health of our hair goes beyond just aesthetics. Strong, healthy hair reflects overall well-being, with factors like nutrition and stress playing a significant role. Hair care products can play a crucial part in supporting healthy hair growth and scalp health.

Shampoos and conditioners cleanse the scalp, remove dirt and styling product buildup, and replenish moisture. However, some ingredients commonly found in hair care products can be detrimental. Sulfates, while effective cleansers, can be overly stripping, leading to dryness and irritation. Silicones, often used to provide shine and manageability, can cause buildup over time, weighing down hair and hindering healthy growth.

One area of concern within hair care products is the use of chemicals in hair straightening treatments. Studies suggest a possible link between certain chemicals found in hair straighteners, relaxers, and similar products, states TorHoerman Law.

These chemicals may be associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, and even ovarian cancer in some cases. These chemicals, including phthalates and formaldehyde, break down the hair’s bonds and achieve a straighter style.

The hair straightener cancer lawsuit alleges that manufacturers didn’t properly warn consumers about the potential risks. The lawsuits allege that companies knew of risks but sold products without warnings.

Though the scientific evidence is evolving, it underscores the need for consumers to prioritize safer hair care products.

Body Care Products

Body washes, lotions, and deodorants are staples in most self-care routines. But their benefits extend far beyond simply cleansing and masking odor. The ingredients in these products can interact with the skin’s microbiome, influencing not just surface health but potentially impacting overall well-being.

  • Antibacterial Soaps: While effective at eliminating bacteria, these products can disrupt the delicate balance of the skin’s microbiome. Opting for gentle cleansers that preserve this balance can promote healthier skin in the long run.
  • Deodorants vs. Antiperspirants: Traditional antiperspirants often contain aluminum, which can clog sweat glands and potentially interfere with the body’s natural detoxification process. Deodorants, on the other hand, simply neutralize odor-causing bacteria. Choosing natural deodorants or aluminum-free antiperspirants can be a healthier option.
  • Moisturizers and Lotions: These products not only hydrate the skin but can also create a protective barrier against environmental irritants. Look for formulas rich in emollients and humectants, which attract and retain moisture, leaving skin feeling soft and supple.

Environmental Impact

While we focus on the impact of personal care products on our health, it’s crucial to consider the bigger picture. This includes evaluating the industry’s environmental footprint. Our self-care choices can have a ripple effect, influencing the planet’s health.

  • Packaging Waste: The personal care industry generates a staggering amount of plastic waste yearly. Much of this packaging, from shampoo bottles to lotion tubes, ends up in landfills or pollutes our oceans.
  • Microplastics: Many exfoliating products contain tiny plastic beads that wash down the drain and contribute to microplastic pollution in our waterways. These microplastics are ingested by marine life and can work their way up the food chain, potentially harming human health.
  • Chemical Runoff: The ingredients used in personal care products can enter our water systems through wastewater treatment plants. Some chemicals, like certain sunscreens, can harm aquatic ecosystems like coral reefs.

According to CleanHub, packaging waste is the biggest environmental hurdle for the beauty industry. A staggering 120 billion pieces of packaging are produced annually, with a concerning 95% ending up discarded. It translates to a significant environmental burden, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

Tips for Safer Products Choices

With so many personal care products lining the shelves, navigating towards safer options can feel overwhelming. But fret not! Here are some simple tips to empower your self-care routine:

  • Embrace Less is More: Simplify your routine by opting for multi-tasking products that address multiple concerns. It reduces overall product usage and potential exposure to various ingredients.
  • Befriend the Ingredient List: Familiarize yourself with common ingredients and research those you’re unsure about. Look for products free from harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates, which have been linked to potential health concerns.
  • Seek Certifications: Look for certifications from independent organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) or B Corporation. These certifications indicate the brand’s commitment to safer ingredients and sustainable practices.
  • Embrace Natural Alternatives: Explore natural alternatives for common products. Consider DIY options using natural ingredients like coconut oil for hair care or baking soda for deodorant. Patch test any new product before full application to avoid irritation.

Cultivating Wellness Through Informed Choices

The world of personal care products extends far beyond achieving flawless complexion or bouncy curls. Our choices have the power to influence not just how we look but also how we feel and how we impact the environment.

By understanding the ingredients we put in our bodies and their impact on our microbiome, we can make informed decisions. This knowledge also helps us consider the potential environmental consequences, promoting true well-being.

Next time you choose a product, remember: it’s about nurturing wellness from within as much as enhancing outer beauty.

Random Updates on My Daughters

Life as a parent is a beautiful whirlwind of emotions, filled with moments that make our hearts swell with pride. Here are some updates on my daughters, each carving their unique paths in life.

Cass, my resilient figure skater, had a big day today. Rising with the sun at 6 am, her dad sent her to the skating rink before 7 am for her figure skating test – first with pre-test practice and then the actual test. Hours of practice and dedication culminated in a successful outcome – she passed her fourth test! Despite the early mornings and rigorous training regimen, Cass’s passion for figure skating remains unwavering. Her commitment to two to three times per week on-ice practice, coupled with daily off-ice sessions at the gym and at home, is a testament to her dedication and love for the sport.  She celebrated her passing with pizza, chips, and Bundaberg root beer, all courtesy of her loving grandma.

Meanwhile, Alycia, my spontaneous adventurer, surprised us all with an impromptu decision to jet off to Hong Kong with her grandma. With her semester break looming and no concrete plans in sight, she seized the opportunity for a spontaneous holiday. Just like that, she booked her air tickets late last night, ready to embark on a week-long adventure in the vibrant city in eleven days, adding yet another stamp to her growing passport. It will be her fourth time in Hong Kong. She will fly back to KL on her own after a week’s stay in Hong Kong while her grandma will fly to London to visit her eldest daughter.

And that’s not all – Alycia’s travel bug doesn’t stop there. She’s also gearing up for a train journey to Perlis and then to Penang with her friends this weekend. This girl is living her best life!

As for Sherilyn, my thoughtful planner, she’s gearing up for a getaway of her own. With her semester break in full swing, she’s eagerly anticipating a trip to Penang with her friends next week. However, the temptation looms as Alycia’s escapades in Hong Kong beckon. Despite her desire to join her sister on this exciting adventure, Sherilyn understands the importance of financial responsibility. Having recently purchased an iPhone 14 that costs over RM3k with my assistance, she’s diligently saving up to repay me in ten installments. It’s a lesson in financial accountability that she’s taking to heart, even if it means missing out on a holiday abroad.

As I reflect on these updates, I’m filled with a sense of pride and admiration for my daughters. Each one embodies their unique blend of passion, spontaneity, and responsibility, carving out their paths in life with unwavering determination.

Sherilyn whipped up a pot of ‘Phoon Choy’ last week, composed of prawns, abalones, mushrooms, my papa’s Hakka ‘yeong ho si’ (stuffed dried oyster with fish paste), fatt choy and broccoli. I know it’s a bit late to be having this as CNY is already over but it doesn’t matter. We can eat this all-year round, just like eating Chinese sausage all year round. 😁

Revisiting Memories at Xin Cuisine, Concorde Hotel

Sundays are a cherished time for our family, marked by moments of togetherness and indulgence in good food. Last Sunday was no exception, as hubby treated us to a surprise family lunch that took us on a journey down memory lane and tantalized our taste buds in equal measure.

This time, we embarked on our usual Sunday lunch with no clue as to our destination. It wasn’t until we arrived at Concorde Hotel that the mystery unfolded, evoking fond memories of our wedding day almost 24 years ago, when we celebrated our union at this very hotel in May 2000.  I thought that hubby was pulling my leg when he told me that he was bringing us to Concorde Hotel for Dim Sum.  We have not gone to a hotel for lunch for eons and in recent years, we hardly dine in hotels.

Stepping into Xin Cuisine, the Chinese restaurant nestled in the lobby of Concorde Hotel, we were greeted by the familiar sights and smells of dim sum – a nod to our wedding dinner held in the same venue.

True to form, the dim sum at Xin Cuisine proved to be a feast for the senses, with each bite bursting with flavor and tradition. From delicate dumplings to crispy spring rolls, the quality of the food remained as impeccable as ever. This is the reason why we chose to have our wedding at Xin Cuisine because of the quality of the food served.

These look like any other dim sum but they taste superb, one of the best dim sums that we’ve eaten.

Dim sum still served on push carts.

Yummy desserts. The tau fu far is silky smooth.

Fried prawn fitters with big chunky prawns inside.

Full house.

After savoring our dim sum goodness, hubby surprised us once again by whisking us off to Three Years Old for coffee and cake. As we lounged in the cozy ambiance of the café, the girls indulged in a trio of sliced cakes, accompanied by steaming cups of gourmet coffee.

Sherilyn & her dad

Our joyous afternoon took an unexpected turn when Sherilyn experienced an allergic reaction, reminiscent of a previous bout of hives that landed her in the hospital in June last year. She was at her dance studio for class when this happened, so she walked to a nearby pharmacy to get medicine to tame the allergy. We realized that the culprit may have been the prawns consumed during our dim sum earlier.

Reflecting on Sherilyn’s allergy history, we came to the sobering realization that while she may not have a direct allergy to prawns, certain chemicals used in their processing could trigger adverse reactions. Most of the time, eating prawns would cause no allergy but sometimes, she would get an itch in her mouth and lips and the worst case was a full-blown hives attack requiring hospitalization in June last year. Thankfully, with swift intervention, the medication managed to stave off a full-blown hives attack, sparing Sherilyn from further discomfort.

Saturday, 2 March 2024 ~ Dinner

We planned to eat at our friend’s tai chow restaurant but there was a cloudburst and the only place that we could conveniently go to without getting wet and braving traffic congestion is the Japanese restaurant at our condo lobby. We love eating at this restaurant but we seldom go to this restaurant now as we have tried almost every item on their menu after living in this condo for almost 16 years. This Japanese restaurant has been around for more than two decades. The owners’ two daughters are the same age as Alycia and Sherilyn. Our girls and their girls grew up together and took swim lessons together when they were younger.

This is what we indulged in, just the three of us – hubby, Cass and me. Alycia was in Singapore to attend Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert, Sherilyn was at a dance rehearsal, and the mil was at another dinner.

Sushi platter. Hubby (currently on a low-carb diet) ordered a sashimi platter but the sushi chef inadvertently prepped sushi, so hubs accepted it, out of goodwill. Hubby and the sushi chef are good friends. Had this been at another restaurant, hubby would reject the wrong order outright.

Cass’s raw salmon salad.

Fried noodles. Our all-time favorite.

Chawan Mushi

Another family favorite – grilled Japanese flying squid. This restaurant dishes out one of the best grilled flying squids around town with meat that does not feel like chewy rubber.

Unagi Don.

Food Glorious Food

These days we don’t cook as frequently as we used to when the girls were younger. During the girls’ growing up years, we used to cook five to six times a week. Twice to thrice a day. Those were the days when we had the luxury of live-in helpers. I would plan the meals weekly, hubby would do the marketing and our helpers would execute the menu. When the mil was around, she would do the marketing and cook. When the girls were younger, the mil stayed in Hong Kong and Auckland most of the time as my nephews and niece were still toddlers and the mil was always overseas to take care of her daughters’ babies.

I really enjoyed those days when I needn’t have to do much house chores. Bless our helpers for giving us so much relief.

Fast forward years later and now our girls are in university and high school respectively. The two older girls do not have dinner at home regularly. Cass only eats one meal a day and my dinner is usually by 4pm, together with Cass when she comes home from school. On most days, there’s food from hubby’s kitchen. Thus, we don’t cook much these days. When the momentum to cook is lost, we tend to get lazy to cook. But who cares, right? As long as we enjoy our food and are happy, that’s good enough. 😋

Our brunch today ~ Kai Si Hor Fun from Jalan San Peng

‘Watt kai’ (smooth steamed chicken)

Fruit rojak that’s next to the Kai Si Hor Fun stall.

Our favorite Vietnamese noodle salad with grilled lemongrass chicken and Bánh mì from Pho Viet, ordered via Shopee Food.

A medley of Taiwanese sandwich, bun and pancake ordered via Shopee Food

Healthy eats from Sixteen Cafe (previously LDG) – poached eggs and scrambled eggs with avo and salad.

Buddha Bowl from Sixteen Cafe

Crab meat omelette with crispy tempeh from Sixteen Cafe.

Almond croissant and chocolate tart from Sixteen Cafe.

HEALTH FREAK MOMMY
