I think I had withdrawal symptoms after I completed my 5-day course of Prednisone (steroid) to treat a hives attack. On the 6th day, I woke up to a terrible headache, feeling of malaise, lethargic and sleepiness. I felt like a walking zombie, pushing myself to take every step. As I didn’t have the luxury to nap the whole day, I trudged through my day and went to bed earlier than usual. The next day I had similar symptoms but in lesser severity. And on the 8th day, I was back to my usual self, thank God!
For the entire five days that I was on Prednisone (twice a day), I had an enormous amount of energy. I knew that it was the steroid giving me the burst of energy.
Steroid pills, also known as oral corticosteroids, can have various effects on the body due to their anti-inflammatory properties. When taken to treat conditions like hives, they work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system’s response. However, the specific effects of steroids can vary from person to person.
One possible reason why I may have felt energetic while taking steroid pills is that they can stimulate the release of certain hormones, such as adrenaline, which are associated with increased energy levels. Corticosteroids can also enhance glucose metabolism, leading to an increase in available energy.
Additionally, steroids can have mood-altering effects, potentially causing feelings of euphoria or increased motivation in some individuals. This could contribute to an overall sense of heightened energy while taking the medication.
When I completed the course of Prednisone, it’s possible that my body experienced a withdrawal effect. Corticosteroids can suppress the body’s natural production of cortisol, a hormone involved in regulating energy levels and stress response. Abruptly discontinuing steroid use can lead to a temporary imbalance in hormone levels, causing symptoms such as fatigue, tiredness, and a general slump in energy. It may take some time for the body to readjust and resume its normal cortisol production.
