Tuesday, 30 May 2023 – Indulging in Unhealthy Delights on a School Holiday

With the school holidays in full swing, I decided to bring Cass to try a new sundae ice cream from a truck. It’s a new kid on the block in our hood and the sundae truck is parked right outside Family Mart. Such an icy cold daring move 😅

We began our morning by taking a leisurely walk from the supermarket car park to the sundae ice cream truck. The walk is about 10 minutes one way and under the unforgiving sun in the current heatwave. The anticipation of savoring creamy, delicious soft-serve was growing with every step we took. However, much to our disappointment, when we reached the truck, it was not yet open for business.  Again! This is the second time that we wanted to try the sundae but the truck wasn’t opened yet.

Nonetheless, we were undeterred from making the most of our day. As Family Mart was just a whisk away, we redirected our footsteps to this store.  We wasted no time and eagerly ordered our matcha sofuto, eager to indulge in the delightful green tea flavor.

When Cass walked to the chiller aisle, she couldn’t help but notice the tantalizing array of onigiri, sandwiches, and pre-cooked bento boxes on display.  I was hoping that she wouldn’t ask for any of these unhealthy items but her eyes gleamed with excitement.  I’ve never encouraged our girls to buy chilled pre-cooked fast food from Family Mart.   But today I relented as it’s the school holidays and school holidays are meant for a little indulgence, right? 😊

Thus, our breakfast took an unexpected turn as we treated ourselves to a combination of soft-serve ice cream, onigiri, and pre-packed sandwiches. While it may not have been the healthiest start to the day, the joy on Cass’s face was worth it. We savored each bite, relishing the rare treat and embracing the joy of spontaneity.  It allowed us to step away from our usual routines and simply enjoy the present moment together.

After our breakfast at Family Mart, we walked back to the supermarket to get some veggies and eggs. And then we walked to the Kopitiam to get our takeaway lunch.

Ice cream for breakfast 😛

Onigiri and sandwich. The crabmeat + egg mayo sandwich was pretty yummy too.

Prednisone Withdrawal Symptoms

I think I had withdrawal symptoms after I completed my 5-day course of Prednisone (steroid) to treat a hives attack. On the 6th day, I woke up to a terrible headache, feeling of malaise, lethargic and sleepiness. I felt like a walking zombie, pushing myself to take every step. As I didn’t have the luxury to nap the whole day, I trudged through my day and went to bed earlier than usual. The next day I had similar symptoms but in lesser severity. And on the 8th day, I was back to my usual self, thank God!

For the entire five days that I was on Prednisone (twice a day), I had an enormous amount of energy. I knew that it was the steroid giving me the burst of energy.

Steroid pills, also known as oral corticosteroids, can have various effects on the body due to their anti-inflammatory properties. When taken to treat conditions like hives, they work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system’s response. However, the specific effects of steroids can vary from person to person.

One possible reason why I may have felt energetic while taking steroid pills is that they can stimulate the release of certain hormones, such as adrenaline, which are associated with increased energy levels. Corticosteroids can also enhance glucose metabolism, leading to an increase in available energy.

Additionally, steroids can have mood-altering effects, potentially causing feelings of euphoria or increased motivation in some individuals. This could contribute to an overall sense of heightened energy while taking the medication.

When I completed the course of Prednisone, it’s possible that my body experienced a withdrawal effect. Corticosteroids can suppress the body’s natural production of cortisol, a hormone involved in regulating energy levels and stress response. Abruptly discontinuing steroid use can lead to a temporary imbalance in hormone levels, causing symptoms such as fatigue, tiredness, and a general slump in energy. It may take some time for the body to readjust and resume its normal cortisol production.

Something really simple that I prepped for my lunch – coleslaw and omelette.

5 Critical Factors to Consider When Choosing a Healthcare Provider

Patients entrust their health to the medical professional when choosing a healthcare provider. They must choose someone they trust who understands their needs and concerns.

Whether they are looking for an in-network doctor with their insurance or one that offers convenient scheduling, there are several important factors to consider.

Experience
Today’s health consumers are developing a more sophisticated awareness of quality across all industries, including healthcare. They’re learning that doctors with higher treatment volumes tend to have better outcomes and a lower rate of complications.

Finding an ” in-network ” doctor with your health insurance provider is also important. It’s not uncommon for doctors to switch networks and no longer accept new patients, so it’s best to check before you make an appointment.

Sam Lee Prospect Medical believes that excellent medical care and a positive patient experience are interconnected, and a good healthcare provider should prioritize both. Clinicians are eager to level up their patient satisfaction metrics and deliver a healthcare experience that inspires adherence and leaves them feeling heard, understood, and empowered. This includes having the ability to read cues like a patient’s tone of voice and body language.

Reputation
Whether it’s a medical facility or a doctor, reputation plays a critical role in choosing a healthcare provider. Patients can search online for reviews and ratings to learn more about the physician or hospital before deciding.

In addition to looking for positive reviews, patients should also consider how well a physician communicates with them. For example, did they answer questions thoroughly with empathy? Do they speak clearly and avoid complex-sounding scientific terms?

When selecting a primary care physician, many ask friends and family for recommendations. Another great resource is the website of your health insurance provider, which will provide you with a list of doctors who are “in-network” and meet your health needs. Many county medical societies will also have lists of physicians in your area.

Fees
The amount a provider charges for health care or service is reflected on the patient’s medical bill. For patients with healthcare insurance, doctors’ fees are negotiated between the provider and the third-party payer (insurance company).

Many insurers have arrangements with providers to charge lower prices for services to their customers, called preferred providers. This reduces consumer costs and is an important driver in choosing providers.

Choosing a doctor that is in-network with your specific health plan is important. Otherwise, you could be hit with surprise medical bills that exceed your budget. It’s also good to check whether your physician accepts new patients. This can often be found by calling the office directly.

Insurance
Insurance coverage is a big part of the healthcare equation. Whether it’s a monthly premium, deductible, copayment, or coinsurance, the amount you pay when you use services can greatly impact your total costs.

Some healthcare providers are in-network for a specific health plan, meaning they agree with the insurance provider to offer care at a negotiated or discounted rate. This is often a good thing as it can lower your out-of-pocket costs.

However, other healthcare providers must be in-network for any particular health plan, and you’ll have to pay out of pocket if you see them. Also, some states have laws and regulations that affect the rates of a certain type of health insurance. These can have a bigger effect on your rates than you may realize.

Personality
Choosing a healthcare provider is an important decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Some factors to consider include determining your healthcare needs, meeting potential providers, evaluating their practices, and determining if they speak your language.

Personality also plays a role in choosing a provider. You’ll want to find a provider with whom you feel comfortable and with a personality that meshes well with your own.

The best way to choose a healthcare provider is to get recommendations from family and friends and do your research online.

The Potential of Yoghurt: A Delicious Defense Against Dementia

Plain low fat yogurt is a staple in my diet. I eat a small bowl everyday, with seeds, nuts and a drizzle of gula Melaka. It fills me up healthily and it helps things move smoothly down south in the morning. Cass and Sherilyn can both whip up really delicious smoothies and sorbet with a variety of fruits and sugar-free yoghurt. I recently read that yogurt even has the potential to stave off dementia and it’s backed by research.

While there is no definitive cure for dementia, emerging research suggests that incorporating yoghurt into our diets may offer some protective benefits against this debilitating condition.

Photo taken in February 2016. This is how I like to indulge in my yoghurt – skinny & sugar-free yoghurt with nut butter, seeds, nuts, and maple syrup or gula Melaka.

The Nutritional Powerhouse:

Yoghurt is a versatile and widely consumed dairy product known for its nutritional value. It is packed with essential nutrients such as protein, calcium, vitamins B12 and D, and probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that promote a healthy gut microbiome, which is crucial for overall well-being. However, recent studies have uncovered a new dimension to yoghurt’s health benefits—its potential to protect against dementia.

The Gut-Brain Connection:
The human gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. Research has demonstrated a strong link between the gut and the brain, highlighting the importance of a healthy gut microbiota in maintaining optimal brain function. The balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut plays a pivotal role in regulating inflammation, reducing oxidative stress, and enhancing cognitive function—all factors that can influence the risk of developing dementia.

Yoghurt and Cognitive Health:
Several studies have observed an association between yoghurt consumption and a reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease revealed that daily yoghurt consumption was linked to a 42% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in older adults. Another study published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience in 2020 found that yoghurt intake was associated with better cognitive performance and a lower risk of cognitive impairment in older adults.

Understanding the Mechanisms:
The exact mechanisms underlying yoghurt’s beneficial effects on brain health are still being explored. However, researchers believe that the probiotics found in yoghurt play a crucial role. Probiotics have been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, enhance the production of neurotransmitters, and strengthen the gut barrier. These mechanisms can have a positive impact on brain health and help protect against the onset of dementia.

Other Considerations:
While the emerging evidence is promising, it is essential to approach yoghurt as part of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Yoghurt should not be seen as a magical cure for dementia but rather as one piece of the puzzle. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, staying mentally active, and managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are also important factors in reducing the risk of dementia.

Conclusion:
While more research is needed to fully understand the connection between yoghurt and dementia prevention, incorporating this delicious dairy product into a balanced diet may offer additional protection for our cognitive well-being.

The next time you’re tempted to grab an ice-cream from the freezer, why not grab that spoon and indulge in a bowl of guilt-free plain yoghurt instead? Feel free to add some brain and heart loving toppings like nuts and seeds, and your favorite fruits. It might just be a tasty step towards a healthier brain.

Hives Attack – Day 3

After the miracle intravenous jab at the ER on Wednesday, the itch stopped and the welts vanished instantly. I’ve never been happier to get a jab than this one!

While the jab made me a bit drowsy, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I was able to enjoy a restful night’s sleep—an elusive luxury I had been longing for due to the constant itching. The relief provided by the treatment allowed me to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face the day.

Although the intravenous jab provided instant relief, it was necessary to continue with steroid pills for five days to ensure a complete resolution of my symptoms. Following the prescribed dosage, I have to diligently pop the steroid pills until Sunday, as instructed by the doctor.

After experiencing the instant relief and the absence of itching following the jab, I was ecstatic. However, as is often the case with chronic conditions, a momentary itch on my thigh just now made me paranoid about the possibility of another hives attack. Such fears are natural and understandable, considering the previous discomfort I have endured. I tried to remain calm and told myself that a single itch does not necessarily indicate a full-blown relapse. Trusting the effectiveness of the treatment and having faith in our body’s healing process is key to overcoming such paranoia and moving forward with confidence.

After battling with hives, it’s important to give your body the time and space it needs to heal. Transitioning to plain, simple foods can provide a gentle reset for your digestive system, allowing it to recover from potential triggers or allergens that might have contributed to the hives. These unadorned meals provide the body with vital nutrients while minimizing potential irritants, helping to restore balance and promote overall well-being.

While I never had any allergies to food before, I try not to get takeout but cook something simple at home. I can survive on really simple no-frill foods, unlike everyone else in the house.

Yesterday I stir-fried cabbage + bok choy + foo pei and that was what I ate for lunch and dinner. I also ate a quarter slice of air-fried marinated Beacon chicken breast, half a sweet corn, low-fat plain yogurt with sunflower seeds and lots of fruits. Today I had steamed fish, steamed chicken and a boiled sweet potato for lunch and dinner.

My lunch and dinner yesterday.

Cass’ dinner ~ vegan pasta (from hubby’s kitchen), the cabbage dish, air-fried marinated Beacon chicken breast and cherry tomatoes.

Boiled sweet potato for lunch today. This sweet potato imported from Japan is really delicious – fine texture, sweet and the skin peels off easily. It’s almost triple the price of locally grown ones.

Fun and Easy Ways to Love Yourself Today

Loving yourself is a fundamentally important part of your overall well-being and happiness, which is why it’s important to prioritize self-care and nurture a positive relationship with yourself on a daily basis.

If you’re looking for fun and easy ways to show yourself some love and appreciation, then you’re in luck. Here are some suggestions to help you embrace self-love today.

Practice Gratitude

Start your day by expressing gratitude for the things you appreciate in your life. Write down three things you’re grateful for or simply reflect on them in your mind. This can be so helpful because cultivating gratitude shifts your focus in life to the positive and fosters an attitude of contentment and self-love.

Treat Yourself (and Reward Yourself too)

Do something nice for yourself that brings you joy. It could be buying yourself a small treat like a delicious pastry or a new book, or it could be treating yourself to a spa day or a massage. Treating yourself occasionally reminds you that you deserve love, care, and indulgence.

On top of that, you should reward yourself too. The next time you find yourself struggling to do something difficult, and doing it anyway, you should absolutely get yourself a reward for getting the job done. These rewards can be anything from a lovely piece of jewelry from a great store such as Chapter 79 to something simpler, like that piece of cake that you really wanted.

Practice Positive Self-Talk

You should always pay attention to your inner dialogue so that you can listen out for and replace self-critical thoughts with positive and uplifting affirmations. Speak kindly to yourself and remind yourself of your strengths, accomplishments, and unique qualities, because when you’re your own champion in your head, you’ll find that you can stick up for yourself better outside your mind too. Positive self-talk boosts your self-esteem and cultivates a positive self-image, which is incredibly important for a healthy life.

Engage in a Hobby or Creative Outlet

When you spend time doing something you love or exploring a new hobby, you give yourself a new way to enjoy your day. Engaging in activities such as painting, playing an instrument, gardening, or cooking allows you to express yourself creatively and brings a sense of fulfilment and joy. What’s more, it also allows you to stay active and physically healthy, which can also bring a heightened appreciation for your life.

Connect with Nature

Finally, you should spend time outdoors and connect with nature whenever you can. Take a walk in a park, have a picnic by the beach, or simply sit in a garden and soak in the beauty of your surroundings. Nature has a calming effect on the mind and soul and helps you feel connected to something greater than yourself.

Remember, self-love is an ongoing journey that requires consistent effort and self-awareness. By incorporating a few of these ideas, you’re taking a step toward nurturing a better relationship with yourself. So, do what you can to embrace self-love as an essential part of your daily life and watch how it positively impacts your overall well-being.

Hives Attack

Experiencing a hives attack can be an incredibly distressing and uncomfortable ordeal. Early this week I found myself caught in the grips of this aggravating condition, and the intensity of the itch and discomfort led me to seek urgent medical attention at an ungodly hour today.

It all began on a seemingly ordinary Monday night when I first noticed the appearance of hives on my body. Initially, the itchy hives were limited to only my back, but by Tuesday, they had spread throughout my body, making their presence more pronounced and distressing. The affected parts of my skin turned red and developed welts, resembling blisters. What started as an annoying discomfort soon turned into an overwhelming struggle.

The relentless itch accompanying hives is perhaps the most maddening aspect of this condition. By Tuesday, the itch had intensified, and it seemed to amplify with every passing hour. In an attempt to find relief, I purchased a tube of steroid cream (hydrocortisone) from the pharmacy and applied it to the affected areas. However, despite my efforts, the cream failed to tame the maddening itch. Sleep became an elusive luxury, as the intensity of the itch disrupted any hope of shut eye.

Desperate for relief from the unbearable itch and recognizing the severity of my condition, I made the decision to visit the emergency room in the early hours of the morning today. At 1 am, I asked my hubs to drive me to the hospital. The urgency of the situation was apparent, as I hoped for immediate medical intervention to alleviate my suffering. I just couldn’t go on with the second night of not getting any sleep.

The widest and biggest welt was right smack on my abdomen, measuring about 10cm in diameter.

Upon arriving at the emergency room, I was promptly assessed by a doctor who recognized the severity of my hives attack. To provide immediate relief, the doctor administered a 2-in-1 intravenous injection consisting of a steroid and antihistamine. Miraculously, within seconds of the injection, the itch that had tormented me for days vanished. It was a much-needed moment of relief. Additionally, I was prescribed oral steroids and antihistamine pills. The steroid pills have to be taken twice a day (two pills each time) for a span of five days.

At the ER. Super relieved with no more itch right after the jab was administered.

I couldn’t really identify the culprit for triggering this allergy. This is my first time having a hives attack and I don’t think I have any allergy. I know though, that what I wasn’t allergic to in the past, I could be allergic to it now, and this is known as adult-onset allergies. I didn’t eat anything new or use any new toiletry and laundry products. The only way I can find out what my allergies are is to do an allergy blood test, which costs a few hundred Ringgit. Cass did an allergy test at Pantai Medical Centre a few years ago.

My encounter with hives taught me a valuable lesson. It highlighted the importance of recognizing when professional medical attention is necessary for severe allergic reactions. While over-the-counter remedies may suffice for milder cases, it is crucial to seek timely assistance from healthcare professionals in more severe situations.

Experiencing a hives attack can be a daunting ordeal, filled with discomfort, frustration and sleepless night. From the initial appearance of hives to the unbearable itch that disrupts daily life, the battle can be arduous. However, seeking urgent medical attention can be a turning point in finding relief. My journey through the extremely itchy welts, failed attempts at soothing the itch, and ultimately, the effective treatment received in the emergency room brought an end to my suffering.

If you find yourself facing a similar situation, I hope my experience serves as a reminder to prioritize your well-being and seek appropriate medical care to find relief from the torment of hives.

Simple Steamed Vegetables For Dinner

Tomorrow is Sunday, aka Cheat Day / Refeed Day / Treat Day! 🤩

Thus, today I had a really clean diet, almost meat-free and ate mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

This is my dinner today – steamed organic pumpkin and radish and seasoned with olive oil and ground black pepper, with a tablespoon of toasted sunflower seeds. No salt and no sugar added.

In addition to my steamed vegetables, I pinched a few slices of fish and vegetables from my daughters’ lunch of economy rice with dishes.

Speaking of economy rice, it is no longer economical. I paid RM27 for my 3 daughters’ dishes today with no rice. I usually cook my own healthy black and red rice, Ponni rice, Basmati rice or parboiled rice. But today the girls had a treat of sushi rice since it’s a Saturday.

I also had an orange, bananas, a wedge of avocado, red dragon fruit, guavas, brazil nuts, ground nuts, organic almond milk with ground flax seeds and oats, a piece of organic millet + pumpkin seeds + seaweed cracker, a handful of crispy vacuum fried shiitake mushrooms, low fat yogurt with sunflower seeds, and a few cups of matcha green tea (from matcha powder) and my must-have decaf coffee with milk in the morning. This is what I usually eat on weekdays. I’m now a flexitarian and my food is about 90% plant-based, though avoiding soy products.

My Life In Photos This Week

Hello peeps!

There’s nothing much to update from me this week, except that it’s been a hot, hot week. It’s so hot that I am always drenched in sweat at home, the moment I move about to do chores. So, this is pretty much a good excuse for me to avoid doing stir-fries and anything that involves cranking up the hot stove 😬

Fortunately I’ve been getting food from hubby’s kitchen almost every day. So all I had to do was to prep a simple green veggie dish by blanching in hot water, or a meat dish grilled in the oven or air-fried. No stir-fries and deep-fries in the sauna cum kitchen.

Sherilyn and I have also started discussing on her tertiary education path as the SPM results will be out soon. Basically, she’s interested in taking A-Levels and then, the shocker, she wants to take a degree in architecture.

Say what? I couldn’t believe her choice.

I’m not really keen in her taking this course as it’s an 8-to-11 year course before one becomes a professional architect! 8-11 years! And the money to fund the studies!! And will she have the perseverance to complete the whole course? I’m now breathing on rarefied air!

She definitely needs a full scholarship or some kind souls to fund her 8-11 years of education from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree.

Anyways, the ultimate decision will depend on her SPM results.

Even Haru is feeling the heat and prefers to sleep on the cool floor with body stretched.

Delicious chicken satay with thick peanut sauce and Kuih Talam from hubby’s kitchen.

Blanched ‘Yeh Heong Far’ flower veggies from my regular organic veggie seller. I drizzled some olive oil on it and used the satay sauce as dressing.

The next day, we had beef satay, Roti Jala and chicken curry from hubby’s shop.

Yummy for our tummies 😋
The Roti Jala tasted really good and crispy when air-fried the next day.

My wrist splint from China (ordered through Lazada) finally arrived after a week. I’ve been wearing a wrist splint to sleep at night for the past 1.5 years to prevent the discomfort of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from disrupting my sleep. And it works like a charm. China-made wrist splints cost a fraction of the price of branded ones sold at local pharmacies and the quality is good. Just make sure you read the reviews first before ordering.

Is It Safe To Consume Expired Vitamins?

Vitamins are essential nutrients that the body needs in small amounts to function properly. They are found in a variety of foods and can also be taken in supplement form. However, it’s not uncommon for these supplements to expire before they are used up. This raises the question: is it safe to consume expired vitamins?

I recently encountered a situation where the seller (a pharmacy) on an online platform inadvertently sent me two bottles of vitamins with an expiration date of July 2023 and it’s already May 2023 now. On the shopping platform, the seller had wrongly written the expiration date of November 2023. I think it was a mistake on the seller’s side as this is a trusted seller whom I have been buying from for over a year now.

The seller offered me two options : to raise a return and refund or accept a small discount voucher from them. As I hate the hassle of sending the products back and wait for a refund, I chose the latter.

Is It Safe To Consume Expired Supplements?

The expiration date on a vitamin bottle is usually an indication of the manufacturer’s guarantee of the vitamin’s potency up to that date. After the expiration date, the manufacturer cannot guarantee the vitamin’s potency, purity, and safety, which means that it may not be as effective as it was before the expiration date. The expiration date on vitamins is usually set at 2-3 years after the manufacturing date, depending on the type of vitamin.

The supplements that I received with only two months left before the expiration date.

But does that mean that consuming expired vitamins is unsafe? The answer is not entirely clear-cut, as it depends on the type of vitamin, how long it has been expired, and how it has been stored. In general, vitamins that are expired by a few months or less are likely to be safe to consume, but their potency may have decreased, making them less effective. On the other hand, vitamins that are expired by a year or more should be avoided, as they may have lost most of their potency and could potentially cause harm if consumed.

It is worth noting that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not require supplement manufacturers to provide expiry dates on vitamin or mineral supplements. The companies may choose to include this information, but only when valid data support the date, and when it is not false or misleading. As a result, a person may prefer to only purchase supplements that contain expiration dates.

The safety of consuming expired vitamins also depends on how they have been stored. Vitamins should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. If vitamins have been exposed to these elements or have been stored improperly, their potency may have degraded faster than their expiration date suggests, making them less effective or even harmful.

Consuming expired vitamins that have degraded in potency may not necessarily cause harm, but it also may not provide the health benefits that the vitamins are intended for. In some cases, however, consuming expired vitamins could be harmful. For example, some vitamins, such as vitamin A and vitamin D, can accumulate in the body and become toxic if consumed in large amounts, and their potency may increase after expiration.

In conclusion, while it may be tempting to consume expired vitamins to avoid wasting them, it is generally not recommended. If the vitamins are expired by a few months or less, and have been stored properly, they are likely safe to consume but may not be as effective. Vitamins that are expired by a year or more, or have been stored improperly, should be avoided altogether. It is always best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and dispose of expired vitamins appropriately.

Throwback Food Snaps

Sherilyn whipped up a big tray of grilled vegetables on Monday morning to make a simple Bibimbap bento to bring to work. I ate some of the grilled veggies for my lunch and hubs ate the remaining the next day. This is my favorite kind of meal and I can eat this every day.

Organic sweet corns, pumpkin, Jap sweet potatoes, shimeji mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, big onions and garlic, seasoned with ground black pepper, salt and lots of olive oil.
My lunch. So delicious and impossible not to love this!

Our current favorite rice – organic red rice and black rice cooked with Japanese sweet potatoes. We have this for dinner almost every day.

Red rice and black rice are considered nutritious because they are whole grains that retain the bran, germ, and endosperm of the rice kernel, unlike white rice which has been stripped of these nutritious parts. This means that they are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Red rice gets its distinctive color from anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants that can help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Anthocyanins have been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, and cognitive decline.

Black rice is also high in antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which give it its deep purple color. These antioxidants have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Black rice is also a good source of iron, which is important for maintaining healthy red blood cells, and magnesium, which is important for maintaining healthy bones and muscles.

Red rice, black rice and Jap sweet potatoes cooked together in the rice cooker. The red and black rice texture is chewy (like glutinous rice) and the rice is imbued with the sweetness and aroma of the sweet potatoes.

Hubs bought these sweet potatoes imported from Japan and they are so sweet, soft and delicious.

Breakkie with the hubs at Makan La @ Brickfields – pork noodles, dry chicken curry noodles and fishballs.

Breakkie with Sherilyn and Cass on a Saturday morning – I had char siu Hong Kong chee cheong fun (RM8) and Sherilyn had CCF with prawn filling (RM10). The CCF also had veggies and eggs fillings, but there were too little fillings and we were not quite satisfied with our plate of CCF.

Cass’ delicious yee mee with loads of black fungus, veggies and minced pork.

I’ve stopped ordering milk tea coz the strong tea is causing me insomnia, albeit drinking it in the morning. I’ve switched to fresh carrot juice with milk (RM6/glass) instead and it gives me almost the same satisfaction minus the sleepless night.

Still feeling hungry after breakfast as she didn’t finish her plate of prawn CCF, Sherilyn made herself a plate of delicious salad and pan-fried buttered sourdough toast with avocado and parmesan shavings.

Sherilyn made Turkish eggs with pan-fried sourdough for dinner the previous night.
Turkish eggs, also known as çilbir, is a delicious breakfast dish that involves poached eggs served on top of garlicky yogurt with a drizzle of spicy warm butter. The combination of poached eggs, garlicky yogurt, and spicy butter creates a creamy and savory flavor that is irresistible.

Sunday, 30 April 2023 ~ Lunch at Strangers at 47, PJ

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a scrumptious weekend brunch, Strangers at 47 Café @ Section 17 PJ is definitely worth checking out. Located in PJ, this cozy cafe occupying three shop lots is one cafe that won’t be a stranger to success with its striking selection of fanciful & flamboyant crepes, some lip-smackingly savory, and others magically sweet. Even the ordinary-sounding components here are top-notch.

We started with the Lethal Shrooms Crepe and Uncle Salmon Crepe, both of which were perfectly cooked and complemented the filling ingredients perfectly.  We wanted to try the crepes with sweet fillings but by the end of our meal, we were too stuffed to try them. We even had to doggy-bag some of the cakes and savory crepes home.

Next came the big breakfast set, which was a hearty combination of eggs, ham, sausage, sauteed spinach and mushrooms, hashbrowns, baked beans and a fluffy crepe that was sure to fill us up for the day. The food was brought to the tables by a robot.

Big Breakfast with crepe.

Toasts with scrambled eggs.

The Lethal Shrooms crepe has fillings of portobello, shimeji, baby king oyster mushrooms, soft and flavorful spinach, caramelized onions, tomato relish and poached egg.

The Uncle Salmon crepe is delightfully filled with pan-seared salmon fillet, sweet potato fries, sautéed cream mushroom & spinach, and miso cream.

Next, we tried the Tomato Chicken Linguine and the Roast Chicken Cajun. The linguine was cooked al dente and had a rich and thick tomato sauce with a generous serving of minced chicken.

The roast chicken was cooked to a T and accompanied by fried potato rings and a cucumber and pineapple salad.  It was succulent and packed with flavorful spices.

For desserts, we indulged in the Cendolier Cendol Cake, Pandan Mochi Swiss Roll, Chocolate Brownie, and Moist Chocolate Cake. Each dessert was a work of art in itself and tasted as good as it looked.

Chocolate brownie, Pandan Mochi Swiss Roll, Pandamic (pandan, lemongrass and ginger drink) and apple juice.

The Cendolier Cendol Cake was a cheesecake with a refreshing and unique twist on a classic Malaysian dessert. The cendol jelly added a fun, chewy element that was a delight to bite into.

The Pandan Mochi Swiss Roll was a delightful combination of chewy and fluffy textures.  This unique swiss roll cake featured pandan-flavored sponge cake with a pandan mochi right smack in the middle. This cake had a very aromatic pandan flavor that was simply irresistible. The pandan sponge cake was light and fluffy, and the mochi filling added a wonderful chewiness that contrasted beautifully with the softness of the cake.  Overall, this cake was a winner in our books.

The Moist Chocolate Cake, on the other hand, was very rich, moist, and decadent and was simply heavenly. The chocolate flavor was intense and we loved how the cake practically melted in our mouths.

Decadent cakes – Cendolier Cendol Cheese Cake and moist chocolate cake.

Each cake had its own unique flavor and texture, but all of them were delicious in their own way.

This cafe is pet-friendly and if you’re planning on bringing your pet, you can dine outdoor (right outside the cafe).
We waited for about 15 minutes for a table outside the cafe.

Overall, our experience at Strangers at 47 was fantastic. The food was superb, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. We’re already planning our next visit and can’t wait to try more of their dishes and cakes.
