Haru The Goblin

This cheeky pussy gave Sherilyn and me a major heart attack this afternoon.

She was playing her favorite game of ‘football’ with an Izumio cap when she accidentally swiped the cap under the fridge. While trying to retrieve the cap, Haru’s paw got wedged under the tiny gap between the fridge and the floor.

I saw her rolling on the floor next to the fridge and thought she looked super cute. It didn’t occur to me that her hand was stuck under the fridge as she wasn’t yelping. Moments later, Sherilyn checked on Haru and then ran to me and told me that Haru’s paw was stuck under the fridge!

Frantically, we tried to free Haru’s paw but she was yelling in pain, crying, hissing at us and tried to bite us. We were also worried that we may injure her hand whilst trying to free her paw. We were even on the verge of calling the Bomba (fire-fighters) to come to Haru’s rescue ๐Ÿ™€ when Sherilyn took out the torchlight to shine under the fridge. She saw Haru’s claw stuck on the fridge’s metal stand and pushed the claw and then voila, Haru’s paw was freed!

What an ordeal and heart-stopping moment it was for all of us!! I really thought that Haru would end up at the vet’s clinic again.

But this dare devil went back to the fridge minutes after she was freed and tried to retrieve the cap again!

Spookily, I met a friend at the supermarket this morning and was informed that her 12-year old dog had recently died of heart failure. She told me that her dog was cremated at the Nirvana Memorial Park and its ashes scattered at Tg Sepat. I asked her more details of cremating pets as I never knew that pets are also cremated at the same place as humans. And lately, I’ve been thinking about what I’ll do with Haru when she crosses the Rainbow Bridge one day.

Talk about superstition! That’s why some Chinese old folks don’t like discussing about death for fear of it becoming a reality.

Spoilt to bits by all of us.

  1. Our two previous cats were cremated and we kept the ashes, on full display in the wall unit! Talking about cats, my current cat had to have dental surgery recently, cost CAD 2k! Worse part is they took out 3 teeth but aborted for the last one as her heart rate and blood pressure dropped. There were 2 vets and 2 nurses working on her and she, thankfully stabilized. So, I donโ€™t think we will let her go through another surgery. I was just going to say that with Haru being young, start brushing her teeth, maybe a few times a week. No need for anything fancy, I use a kidโ€™s toothbrush and there is no need for toothpaste.

    1. Oh gosh, so sorry to hear that you kitty had to go through a surgery to remove her teeth. How old is she?
I bought a pack of pet dental wipes for wiping Haru’s teeth but the thing is we’re always busy or forget to clean her teeth!
Thanks for the reminder. I’ve now set a reminder on my eCalendar to have Haru’s teeth wiped every day. I certainly don’t want her to go thru what your cat went thru ๐Ÿ™€

  2. Glad to hear that your daughter managed to de-escalate the situation with abit of resourcefulness and keeping calm in the heat of the moment. I experienced something similar with my pet cat many years ago. She was called “Cookie” and was a very plump and adorable cat.
Early one weekend morning, when my mom was up and about in the kitchen, Cookie has playfully snuck into our washing machine, which had a side-loading door that was partially open. Once inside the drum compartment, one of Cookie’s claws had become lodged into those tiny holes in the drum. The drum was rotated freely but with Cookie’s weight inside, it was swinging like a pendulum and this prevented Cookie from being able to dislodge her claw and she was meowing in pain. I had immediately awoken and rushed to the kitchen where my dad and mom were frantically trying to extricate Cookie’s claw, but she was hissing and trying to bite anyone who touched her paw. Cookie was lying on her back with one of her paws outstretched to the top part of the inner drum. Then the idea came to me to try and rotate the drum so that Cookie would be in an upright position, and when we did that, she gained her bearings and was able to quickly dislodge her claw and bolted out of the drum!
I think that was one of my most stressful moments ever, but am glad that it had ended as quickly as it had begun. I can imagine you all heaving huge sighs of relief after Haru came free.

    1. Hi Alvin
Thanks for sharing your story on Cookie. Thank God your mom didn’t turn on the washer with Cookie inside! I can imagine the scenario of you and your parents trying desperately to free your fur baby. Yes we were all so relieved after Haru was freed but this stubborn kitty kept going back to the fridge to retrieve the cap. We had to close the kitchen door to prevent her from going in. Thank God Haru’s paw wasn’t injured.
