Reasons Why You Should Consider Taking Your Loved One to an Assisted Living Community

As our loved ones get old, there are essential needs and extra care that we cannot fully provide. This is because most of them are subjected to diseases associated with aging and lack enough energy to handle things by themselves. Most people find taking their loved ones to the assisted living communities negatively, which may seem to society like you are neglecting them. There are many benefits on why you should find it essential to take your senior loved ones for assisted living; more details are provided below.

Medical care

Home-based care can be a bit expensive, especially if you are not financially prepared to take care of your loved one. This is because it requires one to seek professional medical help, furnish their rooms with the best medically proved furniture, and purchase assisted living equipment. With a good institution such as asenior living in Fort Myers, everything is well accounted for your loved one. They are best equipped with professionals who handle different medical issues. This is the best way to help your loved ones with any illness they may be suffering from.

Socializing

It would be suitable for your loved one to be in a place with people of the same age and probably handle the same health issues. It makes them socialize best together as well as develop healthy relationships. Most seniors tend to live alone at times, which makes them end up in depression, which cannot be managed when they graduate.

Assisted living

There are personal services that family members can shy off from attending to their loved ones. In assisted living homes, they offer professionals who help them take baths, clean their clothes, and help them around.

Living with senior loved ones can be quite challenging; this is because there are some needs that you cannot fully attend to them with. Choosing a good assisted living community is the best solution for their comfort.

Why Daughters Are A Blessing

As a mother to three girls, I can vouch on the blessings and joys that my daughters bring to my life. Growing up with my 2 brothers in a neighbourhood full of boys on the street that I live on, I had always yearned to have a sister to do girly things with me. Instead of climbing trees, playing kites and marbles, I yearned to have a sister to wear matching dresses with me and play pretend cook with me. Now that I have 3 daughters, I am living my childhood dream of having sisters who are my best friends.

Here are some of the reasons why I think having daughters are a great blessing in my life:

1 Wear Matching Outfits
When my 3 girls were younger, we used to wear mommy and me dresses when we had special outings. I really miss those special moments of us together, enjoying our outings and trips in matching outfits, camwhoring and making heads turn 🥰

2 My confidante
Now that my daughters are all teenagers, I share with them some of the problems that I face in life and we brainstorm ways and find solutions together. I tell them my frustrations and dissatisfaction and they console me and give me ‘advice’.

3 Shopping
There is something very different when shopping with your daughters. I can see the difference with mom shopping with my brothers and she shopping with me. Both mom and I can get crazily excited and ecstatic when we shop for clothes, jewelry, household goods and bags. I miss those days when mom and I went shopping in Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia, Lake Toba and China. We had such great time shopping and traveling together.

4 Daddy’s Little Princess
Little girls aren’t just for mommies to cherish their childhood, even dads have a soft spot for them too. A dad is his little princess’ first love and first hero and she will not fail to bring out the protective man in him. I was and still am my papa’s favorite kid 😍

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of. This rhyme holds so much truth in it. I truly miss shopping for cute baby clothes for my three little girls when they were babies. They no longer want me to shop for their clothes now that they’re persnickety teens. I guess the next time I get to shop for cute kids clothes will be for my grandkids! 😁

Haru The Greedy Cat

Haru D Princess has a ravenous appetite. She’s truly a Yap family cat coz, like the Yaps, she loves food. At slightly over 6 months old, she still needs 4 meals a day! Sometimes even more with treats in between. We’ve tried to cut down at least 1 meal in a day but this fella kept purring and jumping onto our dining table and kitchen tops to scavenge for food. Even after feeding her a packet of wet cat food, she will look for her biscuits jar, swipes the bottle and tries to open the jar. Oh gawd! But surprisingly, she’s not fat. In fact she looks kind of scrawny.

The other day I took out a bowl of hot pork and herbal soup and left it to cool under the fan on the dining table; then went back to work on my PC. Haru D Greedy was out of the cage and I forgot! Minutes later when I turned back to get my soup, Haru had already jumped up the dining table and when she saw me, quickly stole a piece of pork from my soup and ran to the piano to gobble down the piece of hot pork! She’s not even hungry but she just happens to love pork. And chicken, bread, pau and cakes. So whenever we’re eating these, we have to be very careful not to leave them unattended to on the dining table for they will surely be gone within minutes! Unfortunately bread and pau are not well tolerated by her stomach. She’ll get sticky poop if she eats too much wheat flour products.

I thought only stray cats from the back alleys behave like this? I used to hate stray cats as we always had fish and meat missing from our wet kitchen. Why do indoor domestic cats who are well fed act like this too? 😹

Activities To Do With Your Senior Relatives

While we all love a good chat and a cup of tea, it can get tiring doing the same thing every time you visit senior relatives.

So, what else can you do?

In today’s post, we’re going to highlight a number of activities to do with elderly parents and other seniors.

If your older relatives struggle with mobility, maintaining a social life, or eating healthily, they may be suffering from underlying issues like depression and loneliness. They might also be struggling with other conditions such as Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

Talk about Lifestyle

It’s a good idea to discuss how they’re feeling about their lifestyle and health before diving in and forcing new activities on them: Spending the time discussing care and support options might be a better option. According to Brightview assisted living in Baltimore, one of the most common reasons seniors look towards these types of communities is due to the daily activities, socialization, quality meals, and security – which might be the perfect environment for your seniors.

However, if you’re not ready to deal with that difficult discussion, although we don’t recommend leaving it too long, here are five fun and stimulating activities to do with elderly relatives.

Head out for a picnic

One way to ensure seniors get at least one varied and nutritious meal is by preparing a picnic. Head to their favorite spot or try somewhere new and bring out the sandwiches. If you’re stuck on what to pack but want to make sure it’s healthy, check out this list of the best foods for older adults

Paint by numbers

Great for mindfulness and totally rewarding once finished, paint by numbers is an ideal bonding activity for you and your grandparents. You can now even order a personalized picture online to create the numbers and colors for you. You’ll have fun recreating your favorite family picture while painting in the sunshine.

Treat them to an ice sundae

Old age doesn’t mean you can’t be a big kid. And who doesn’t love ice cream? Going out for ice cream sundaes is a great way to get seniors out and about while also indulging yourself. Alternatively, stay at home and bring the toppings to them.

Have a clear out

Whether it’s mobility issues or simply not having the energy, working together to have a clear out will be a great way to spend the day productively. Plus, if there comes a time where your senior parents or grandparents need to downsize or move into assisted living, you’ll be one step ahead.

Create a family recipe book

No matter how good restaurant meals are, they’re never quite as good as family recipes passed through generations. But these recipes are usually passed down through spoken word, which isn’t great for those with bad memory! To keep the family secrets safe, get together and create a family recipe book to ensure the delicious food keeps on coming.

There are plenty of other activities to choose from for rainy or sunny days, but these should get you started! Let us know your favorite things to do with elderly parents or grandparents.

Friday, 2 July 2021

This morning I woke up to a pleasant surprise. My MySejahtera app has been updated with the date of my 2nd dose appointment for the AstraZeneca vaccine. The interval between my first and second dose is 33 days, which is a tad long as compared to Pfizer recipients (my parents in Ipoh are one of them) but I’m glad that I’m now given a date. I’ve been earnestly checking the app daily to see if there’s any update on the 2nd dose appointment date since 2 June when I received the first dose. Thank you to the Government for speeding up the vaccination process!

Hubs will be getting his 2nd dose of AZ on 21 July 2021 and the MIL will be getting hers on the same day as me. We’ll go to the vax centre together again, though there’s a 2-hour time difference.

The Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in most parts of the Klang Valley will commence tomorrow for a period of 2 weeks. In an EMCO, no one is allowed to get out of their house, except for 1 representative from each household, to get food and essential stuff. Areas under an EMCO will be fenced up with barbed wires with surveillance by army personnel. Thankfully our area is excluded from the list but we can’t rest on our laurels as our Taman was and is still a red zone; we may be placed under an EMCO if cases keep surging 😷.

How’s everyone keeping on the eve of the EMCO?

Going Nuts This Lockdown

I’m going nuts as the full lockdown continues with the number of Covid cases showing no sign of abatement and I’m also snacking on a lot on nuts to get enough calories to slog around the house.

With 5 ladies in the house 24/7, the floor is perpetually dusty with hair, dust (construction just next to our condo), cat’s fur, food crumbs (I wonder why these people keeping dropping food on the floor like toddlers!) and other dirt that makes my eye sore. Thus, I’m like a robot vacuum cleaner, moping the floor at least 10x a day! My mum has 2 robot cleaners to do the cleaning for her at home and she’s urged me to get one too. Budget for a robot vacuum cleaner is not in our favor at the moment plus our condo floor area has too many things. I think the robot will get confused instead. I’m the robot cleaner at home and have lost another kilo to my weight this lockdown, weighing a mere 41.9kg net weight first thing in the morning 😳.

On another note, Maria who is asked to take no pay leave from her job as an office cleaner has now found another cleaner job and it’s at our condo. Though she can’t come into our home yet, I’m happy to be able to see her every morning when she mops the lobby of our condo. I still pass food to her regularly and I’ve urged her to collect food from blessing shelves at our Taman petrol station. I can’t wait for Maria to come back to our home!

My new ration of nuts arrived from Shopee 3 days ago. Go check out Zizigo Mall @ Shopee. The price of their nuts are cheaper than other shops and are fresh. This is my 2nd purchase from them.
Busy body Haru D Princess always checks out all my parcels before I open them 😸
Cass is suffering from ‘coronasomnia’ aka ‘Covid-somnia’ lately. A few days ago, she got up at 2:30 a.m. and sat outside Haru’s cage to play with her best boo, then fell asleep at her desk until 6a.m. Last night she got up at 3 a.m. but didn’t tell me. Someone snitched on her and informed me!
