Haru turns 7 months old in July 2021 and she’s been with us for about 5 months now. Her eyes are certainly bigger than her tiny stomach. She loves food, just like the Yaps. But after she overeats, she tends to have diarrhea and even vomiting. So her health freak hooman mom would freak out each time this happens. Thus, I have put Haru on a diet.
Haru now gets two wet meals a day – fish in the morning and chicken / pork / fish for supper. We used to give her two heap teaspoons of Whiskas kibbles at 12 noon but I think the Whiskas brand of kibbles are not well tolerated by her tummy. There may be certain additives in the kibbles that are causing the diarrhea.
Haru’s stomach can’t handle wheat flour products well and she will have diarrhea or sticky poop after having a just a tiny amount of bread / pau / kibbles. So I’ve given all the Whiskas kibbles to Maria who will be giving them to her friend who has 10 cats in her flat!
I’ve now switched Haru back to Pro Diet kibbles (which is slightly costlier) and she only gets one teaspoon (flat) of kibbles at 12 noon and another one teaspoon at 5 p.m. as snack. No snacking at any other time. No feeding her excessively. Haru is allowed to be out of her cage during the day unless her ‘sakai’ mode is switched on.
I noticed that Haru will be switched into her ‘sakai’ mode if her tummy doesn’t feel comfortable. She gets hyper restless and runs around amok and bites things before the diarrhea or vomiting episodes.
With Haru’s new diet regimen, her tummy doesn’t feel bloated anymore. Her poop is back to normal. I have to be very firm with Sherilyn and Cass not to secretly feed Haru with kibbles or catnip biscuits just to gain Haru’s affection 😐.
Faber-Castell Malaysia has launched the Fast Gel Z, a new retractable gel pen that offers an unbeatable smooth writing experience, making it the smoothest gel pen in the market.
I received the sample pens today and my 3 girls went ‘fighting’ for the black and blue pens. But I only received one each in red, blue and black. As usual, Alycia is always the one who gives in to her two sisters. And since she’s only starting college in September and doesn’t need to use a pen now, Cass gets the blue pen and Sherilyn gets the black one.
In engineering the Fast Gel Z, Faber-Castell developed a new and innovative multi-channelled tip that is paired with ultra-low viscosity ink that results in an unrivalled smooth writing performance. This innovative combination results in The Fast Gel Z Pen delivering the smoothest writing performance out of any other pen in the market. With the new tip technology, there is less friction between the pen and the paper, resulting in a smooth laydown.
Oooh, I would have loved such smoothness from a pen during my high school and tertiary education days! Smoothness = speed! Thus, my girls only buy gel tip pens.
The new Fast Gel Z pen includes the following features:
Ultimate smoothness in writing performance
Fast-dry ink with no smudges
Intense, vibrant inks
Extra-soft grip for superior comfort when writing
Refillable
Discover the ultimate smoothness of the Fast Gel Z today! This gel pen comes in two variants – 0.5mm and 0.7mm, both of which are available in black, blue and red ink.
Each Fast Gel Z Pen retails at RM5 a pen while its refill retails at RM3.50. They are now available at major stationery stores and hypermarkets nationwide, as well as Faber-Castell’s eShop at https://shop.faber-castell.com.my/.
These are the delectables cooked by Sherilyn on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday – Ratatouille.
Monday – grilled chicken and baked smashed potatoes. Both dishes were decadent. If you like French fries, try making baked smashed potatoes. They’re healthier (and crispy too) and so much more yummier. Littered with herbs, black pepper, olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt, the potatoes are really addictive.
When the chicken thighs were in the oven, the sides of the baking paper touched the hot inner walls of the oven and there was fire in the oven! I was out and when I came back, Sherilyn nonchalantly told me that she had to clean up the ashes in the kitchen coz she almost burnt down the kitchen 😲. I have been telling her repeatedly to be extra careful of the sides of the baking paper touching the inner oven walls but 🙄
2020 was a very tough year for all and sundry, including couples planning their nuptials. Covid-19 unceremoniously destroyed the lives and livelihood of millions of people. It destroyed the dreams of couples hoping to have their dream wedding. Couples had to postpone their wedding dates several times and have had to whittle down their guest lists and lost out on huge sums of money due to companies going bust. The dream wedding gowns and wedding suits are still hanging in wardrobes. Many couples have resorted to a low-key wedding ceremony with fewer than 10 guests while some are still looking forward to the day when social gatherings are allowed again so that their dream wedding can proceed and be attended by hundreds of guests.
Not only did the pandemic throw a spanner in the works for couples who had their wedding planned last year, it’s also thrown doubt for anyone who pushed their wedding to 2021, or those newly-engaged couples hoping to tie the knot this year. But as more and more people received both doses of their vaccination, this may be a promising year with a glimmer of hope for couples intending to have their wedding ceremonies. As of 26 July 2021, more than 3.88 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide, equal to 51 doses for every 100 people.
Governments across the world are now allowing more ‘social activities privileges’ to those who have been fully vaccinated. This may include allowing weddings, civil ceremonies, dine-in at restaurants, prom nights and other social activities. Those with teens will be elated that they can still don on their prom suits on their much-awaited prom night.
If you’re ready to suit up smartly either for your own wedding or to attend one, hop over to AllAboutSuit to browse their complete range of smart wedding suits. New visitors can enjoy a USD20 discount with discount code: new .
I was at my ‘Peace Path’ at 10:30 a.m. yesterday when Cass Whatsapped me to ask me where I was. I sent her this photo to show her where I was.
After getting my dose of Vitamin D and serotonin, I went to hubby’s central kitchen to get our lunch.
Today is a no-cooking day for us as our in-house teenager chef still has an on-going online exam. And I still have several articles to submit to my boss for July. Have I told you that I received a job offer several weeks ago? The contract is for 1 year. So amidst my already hectic life without Maria helping me until the Covid situation abates, I now have another ‘helping’ on my already full-to-the-brim plate. But I have no complaints. The job came at an opportune time when any additional side income is a great relief to us.

Finding the Right Domestic Helper
Not all domestic helpers are the same. Because of this, you have to put time and effort into finding the right person for the job. You can get recommendations from others and learn about the options in your area to find someone who can help with your needs and who will meet your expectations. Being informed is the best way to see why hiring a domestic helper is a smart move.
Not too long ago, I wrote about my mini drama involving a car park chip coin at my neighborhood supermarket which I always frequent. The dang small and slippery coin slipped out from my hand into a tiny gap between my car handbrake and my seat and I spent 15 minutes frantically trying to retrieve the coin. The supermarket manager whom I am very familiar with told me that he couldn’t help me and I had to pay a RM30 fine to replace the coin 😠. Thank God for watching over me, I managed to retrieve the coin and evaded the RM30 fine!
Today it happened again, WTF! I wonder if it’s only me with butter fingers (mind you, I’m a very cautious person) or this had happened to many ‘victims’? These days, my hands are always slippery and wet from hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Surely the tiny, smooth chip coin would slip from my hand, right? 😐
As I was driving out of the supermarket to the exit barrier, I took the coin from the dashboard and fudge, it dropped from my slippery hand into the tiny gap under the dashboard. I quickly parked my car at the side and with my loyal almost empty Cetaphil hand lotion tube that’s thin enough to go through the gap, tried pushing the coin out but the dang coin went to the right side into an even smaller gap. WTF!!! Previously I used the same hand lotion tube to push the coin out.
I called the car park attendant for help even though I knew that he won’t take the effort to help me coz he’s not the most helpful of staff and always has a grumpy and pissed off face. Wasted my time and effort calling him as he just said “tak tahu”. Whatever, go back to work. I quickly called hubs for SOS and fortunately he was on his way out of his shop to get some ingredients to cook fish head curry and managed to come to my rescue within 5 minutes.
One look at the dashboard and my handyman pushed a lever under the steering wheel and the steering wheel box loosened and moved up; I heard the dang chip coin roll out onto the mat. Thank God for helping me again! I really didn’t want to waste my RM30 on a stupid coin. 🤑
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is protective clothing ranging from helmets to goggles, surgical face masks, face shields, N95 respirators to hazmat suits and much more. PPE is designed to protect the wearer’s body from injury or infection. In times of pandemic, PPE is the first line of defense against deadly viruses for healthcare professionals. With the Covid-19 pandemic spreading like wildfire and mutating into different variants, PPE is more essential than ever. PPE is of utmost importance not only to healthcare professionals and front liners but to each and everyone of us.
We’ve been advised and encouraged to do double masking along with other PPE like goggles and face shield when out in crowded places and healthcare facilities. A recent CDC study found that when people wear a well-fitted surgical mask covered by a cloth mask, they can increase their own protection from aerosol droplets by 90% or more, and that possible transmission is significantly reduced when both parties wore masks.
PPE will be essential for healthcare staff and the general community for the long haul as Coronavirus is unlikely to be eradicated. It will however, become endemic but with decreased potency over time. Shopping for face masks, N95 respirators, face shields and goggles will now be an inevitable routine for you and me and everyone else, just like shopping for other essentials like food and drinks. We will probably have to live with wearing a face mask whenever we are out for years to come.
It is the hope of everyone that as more of the world population gets vaccinated and acquires some immunity through exposure to the virus, the impact of the virus on the world in terms of mortality, severity and the need for social isolation will lessen.
Meanwhile, the best we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones from Covid-19 is to mask up the correct way, dress up in proper PPE which you can shop online for at New York Microscope Company, practise social distancing and sanitize our hands and spaces regularly.
Stay safe and healthy, everyone. May we all persevere to stay strong and determined to fight this war against the invisible enemy together.
After several months of coaxing Maria, our part-time helper of 9 years to get vaccinated, she finally relented and registered herself. Two weeks ago, her friend helped her to download the MySejahtera app onto her phone. Today Maria received her first dose of Pfizer and her second dose will be on 9th August. I’ve also been advising Maria to wheedle her husband to register to be vaccinated but she kept telling me that her husband is very stubborn, has a phobia of needles and who keeps giving invalid excuses to avoid getting vaccinated. However, after she came home from the vax centre today, she managed to convince her husband to get vaccinated. Maria quickly sent me a Whatsapp message to ask me to guide her to download the MySejahtera app onto her husband’s phone. As she doesn’t understand English, I had to translate everything on the app for her. I sent her a You Tube tutorial in BM too. I used Google Translate to translate my explanation to her in BM 😬
I also informed Maria that her husband has an option to walk-in to any vaccination center on 1st August onwards to get vaccinated without any prior appointment / registration via MySejahtera.
I’m so glad that my persistent persuasion has paid off. Maria has already gotten her first dose today and her husband will soon be vaccinated. Soon Maria can walk into our home to help us again. I’m so proud of Maria.
I used to eat raw veggie salads and microgreens quite a bit. The leafy greens and vegetables are a good source of natural fiber and contain beneficial plant chemicals which help to reduce bad cholesterol, control blood sugar and fight diseases. I only buy organic or pesticide-free veggies, especially if they are to be eaten raw.
Throughout the lockdown since last year, I’ve stopped eating salads. Our lives were changed overnight. Routines changed. Suddenly the girls needn’t have to go to school anymore and it’s been more than a year that the girls haven’t gone to school except for a short few months last year and two weeks this year. My healthy eating habits went out of the window as I tried hard to adapt to being cooped up at home 24/7 with 3 kids and a mil without any helper. Fortunately hubs is in the essential service and can still work at his central kitchen. That’s one less person to be cooped up with 24/7 in our apartment.
Maria, our most trusted part-time helper has to stop coming into our home once more as we don’t know whom she mingles with the moment she leaves our home. But cooking and chores have to continue without her. I was sick to my head of having to clean up and wash up with a house full of occupants cooking, snacking and eating throughout the day. The house is dusty and dirty all the time. Sometimes I wonder if they are thrash and dirt generators! And everyone seems to be resistant to dust and dirt except me. I was and still am like a human robot cleaner. I CAN’T WAIT FOR MARIA TO COME BACK! But this is only possible when the number of Covid cases start to go down and when we are fully vaccinated including Maria. I’m glad that Maria will get her first dose of vaccine tomorrow.
Suddenly I just didn’t bother about home-cooked food anymore. I ate food from hubby’s shop almost daily though they are mostly spicy and fried dishes. I also ordered food delivery to our home 2-3 times a week. Each time the food arrived, all of us would get excited. After enjoying the meals, there’s not much to wash or cleanup. Such blissful and stress-free meals! I needed this sanity so much.
Throughout our time sheltering at home, I also snacked on chips with the girls but have to stash away some sinful snacks in Alycia’s room. I didn’t want Cass to see these snacks. She can lose herself and binge on them. Because of her health issues, I try to keep junk food away from her. And partly because of her, I’ve started to eat healthy again. I’ve recently started to eat raw vegetables again. I don’t completely stop buying snacks but I stock up the kitchen with more healthy foods and snacks. Instead of ice-cream, I buy yoghurt. Instead of chips, I buy nuts. I stock up the refrigerator with lots of fruits as Cass loves fruits. Cass also loves the roast almonds and mixed nuts from Signature Market and I keep replenishing them so that she gets to snack on healthy foods. My love for raw salads and microgreens have rubbed off on the girls too. They now eat these raw microgreens and salads with me several times a week, when in the past they’d not even try. Which kid likes raw alfalfa and radish sprouts, eh?
Shopping for stationery items for the kids during the lockdown be like this:
Yesterday I went to Mr DIY after being hounded by Cass and Sherilyn for days. Sherilyn who’s sitting for her mid-term exam (online) needed pens and Cass broke her mechanical pencil. Her ear phones also conked out and she needed a new set for her online lessons. So I went to Mr DIY alone and video called the girls so that I’d get them the right items this time.
Have I told you that the girls are super persnickety when it comes to their stationery items? A few days ago I bought a Faber Castell mechanical pencil from 99 Speedmart for Cass but she didn’t want it and I had to bring it back to the mart to exchange it with something else. Not too long ago I bought her a new set of cheapo earphones but she didn’t want to use them as the earphones didn’t have bud covers. And pens must be gel and not click or grip with only 0.5mm tip 🙄. During my time, I only used pens given as free gifts and my mechanical pencil (also a free gift from a blackcurrant cordial purchase) lasted until my college days! That’s how frugal and careful I was with my belongings.
Which girl doesn’t like wearing shoes with high heels? They’re elegant, sexy, stylish and make you appear a few inches taller and slimmer. When wearing high heels, you are much more aware of your gait and may find that you tend to move with more grace, elegance and confidence. However, there’s always a downside to everything and this includes wearing high heels.
Years ago when I was working in the corporate world and wore heels every single day, I suffered from painful heels, sore toes, the occasional blisters and backache. But I couldn’t give up on the killer heels. I didn’t look good wearing women’s flat sandals in my corporate suits as I don’t have the height to look good in flats. I continued wearing high heels almost daily until the pandemic swept the world early last year. When the pandemic just started, everyone was terrified of going out. I started to wear sneakers and sports shoes with socks when I got out of the house to shop for groceries. I wanted every part of my body covered to protect it from the virus. And it also helped that wearing sneakers and sports shoes helped me walk at a faster pace and it felt super comfortable compared to high heeled shoes. As a result, I walked more every day and clocked up to over 17,000 steps daily every day.
A study in 2012 from Harvard Medical Publishing states that high heels users will usually have shorter steps, flexed toes, and also calf muscles shrink that affects the feet to be more susceptible to injury. According to information on the Harvard Medical Publishing page, the criteria of an ideal shoe are to have a wide and non-pointed tip, soft material, and flat surfaces.
Wearing flat shoes has its own advantages for your health. Here are the following benefits:
Practical
Comfortable
More distance covered
Low risk
Protects your feet
Better feet health
Safety and prevents falls
Lesser knee and low back pain issues
However, not everyone can wear flat shoes. One of the conditions caused by wearing flat shoes is plantar fasciitis. This is a common foot condition where the inflammation of the fascia that runs along your foot causes you pain. If you are suffering from plantar fasciitis, it will be made worse with unsupportive shoes like flip flops and other flat shoes with no support. You can help avoid future problems by looking for flats with arch support from online shoes shops like Shoessee. Steer clear of flats that have really thin soles.
You only have one pair of feet, so take good care of them so that they will last well for the rest of your life. Feeling pain with every step you take is the last thing you ever want. Choose the best women’s shoes online carefully as a good pair of shoes is vital for the health of your feet. Happy feet = happy day! 😉
As Covid-19 continues to spread and mutate in most parts of the world, a small medical device called a pulse oximeter has started to fly off the shelves, making it an essential medical device in a Covid-era home.
With our country’s hospitals on the verge of paralysis caused by a surge of Covid cases and patients requiring ICU care, the practice of regularly checking on one’s health at home becomes essential to prevent potential medical emergencies.
At a virtual press conference that I attended recently via Zoom organized by Zuellig Pharma and Medisana, Dr Wong Teck Wee talked about the importance of health monitoring from home. Dr Wong is a registered specialist in cardiology and internal medicine with NSR (National Specialist Register, Malaysia) and Singapore Ministry of Health. He demonstrated how to use a pulse oximeter and what the readings mean.
What is a pulse oximeter?
A pulse oximeter is a small device that looks like a big clothes peg. This tiny fingertip device can give you valuable information about your health during a bout of Covid-19 or any respiratory illness.
You place your finger snugly inside (most require nail side up), and within seconds it lights up with numbers indicating your blood oxygen level and heart rate. Most healthy people will get an oxygen reading around 95 to 98 percent. Some people with existing health conditions may have a lower normal reading. You should check in with your doctor if the number falls to around 93 or 92 or lower.
If the level of oxygen became this low all of sudden, these patients would be unconscious, having seizures, or otherwise affected. This means that there were a period of days where they were going silently down and they were not aware of it.
The device will also show your heart rate. A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from about 60 to 100 beats per minute, although athletes with a higher cardiovascular fitness will have a lower pulse.
Why is a Pulse Oximeter an Essential Gadget at Home
Patients with Covid-19 can experience a potentially dangerous drop in oxygen saturation without having obvious breathing problems. This condition is called “Happy Hypoxia” and is usually common among younger patients. Without a pulse oximeter, they might never know it or get very used to how they feel, despite very low oxygen levels. One of the factors contributing to the increased number of severe Covid-19 cases is “Happy Hypoxia”. By the time they go to the hospital feeling shortness of breath, their oxygen levels would have dropped significantly, and they could have very advanced Covid pneumonia. Too many patients were showing up at the hospital with perilously low oxygen levels, putting them at risk for severe complications and death. Many doctors are advising patients to get a pulse oximeter, making it the go-to gadget of the pandemic.
Is there a risk to monitoring oxygen levels at home?
It’s possible that a home monitor could give a faulty reading or be used incorrectly, prompting a patient to seek care unnecessarily. If you or someone in your home shows a very low reading, you may want to test your device on a healthy person to confirm that it is working correctly and discuss it with your doctor. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you get a good quality pulse oximeter. It is your own health that you are monitoring with the device, so spending a little more on a good pulse oximeter is a well spent investment.
Why You Should Buy An MDA Approved Pulse Oximeter
Malaysians seeking to buy pulse oximeters for Covid-19 home monitoring measures should only get those certified by the Medical Device Authority (MDA). When you shop for one at the pharmacy, do ask the pharmacist if the pulse oximeter is MDA approved. Many people are buying this device online and if you’re planning on getting one from online stores, be sure to ask the seller if their device is MDA approved and ask the seller to show you proof of it being MDA approved.
Medisana PM100 Pulse Oximeter
One of the top 9 best pulse oximeters in Malaysia is the Medisana PM100 Pulse Oximeter. This pulse oximeter can give you an accurate reading of your heart rate regardless of a bar graph or waveform. It uses a simple and convenient one-touch operation, complete with a bright OLED display that can be viewed in six different directions. You can even adjust the brightness accordingly using its 10-level setting. It also comes with an automatic switch-off feature, which would shut down within 8 seconds if no measurement is taken. This helps to save the battery efficiently. Other highlights include a battery level indicator and a bundled carrying strap to hang it on.
In conclusion
When it comes to health and wellness, many people generally focus on eating a well-balanced diet, getting regular exercise and sufficient sleep. However, health monitoring seems to be a neglected area when in fact, it is equally important in order to prevent diseases. Regular health monitoring and disease prevention can reduce suffering, medical costs and even prevent death.
Medisana Contest
In conjunction with the ‘Health Monitoring Begins from Home’ campaign, Medisana will be organizing an online contest to give away COVID CARE TRIO containing 1x Pulse Oximeter, 1x Non-Contact Thermometer and 1x BU535 BP Meter on 3 different months. The contest is starting on 15 July 2021 to 14 August 2021, 15 August 2021 to 14 September 2021 and 15 September 2021 to 14 October 2021.

Haru D Greedy now knows that the trash can at the dry kitchen has food scraps since the day she dug the can and found a huge chunk of KFC chicken skin that Cass threw away. Boy that was like finding a pot of gold for her! We were all busy with our things in the living room and forgot to close the kitchen door. When I stepped into the kitchen, I saw thrash strewn on the floor with the big piece of KFC chicken skin dangling on Haru’s mouth. When I reacted, Haru got scared and ran away, leaving the piece of skin on the floor 😹
Since that happy discovery day, Haru has been eyeing the trash can throughout the day. Yesterday she dug out a big piece of pau skin that Cass threw away. I suspect that Cass is deliberately throwing all the food scraps in the dry kitchen trash can as she knows that these are Haru’s favorite food. Today Haru climbed up the dining table and stole a piece of sourdough pancake when Cass let her out of the cage but didn’t watch her. Both Cass and Sherilyn were attending online lessons and I was washing the bathroom. When I came out, I saw Haru with a chunk of sourdough pancake on the floor.
Haru oh Haru, why are you always so hangry? You’re well fed but you behave like a stray cat eyeing everybody’s food all the time. 😹
Covid-19 has changed the way most of us purchase our necessities. In a short 1.5 years ever since the start of the pandemic, many of us have now switched to online shopping as many physical retail outlets all over the world are closed due to lockdown measures. Ever since the authorities imposed a movement control order in our country in March last year, more than 50% of my purchases have been switched from physical shopping to online shopping. Initially I didn’t really enjoy online shopping as I wasn’t familiar with how I should go about to get free shipping and cashback. But after I’d finally figured out that by just spending a couple of minutes several times a day on the shopping platform, I could collect free shipping vouchers, cash back vouchers and other freebies. The prices of the items in my shopping cart sometimes go down too. These vouchers have helped me save quite a bit from my online purchases. Besides, I get to save on petrol and parking and most importantly, my time, through online shopping.
Ever since we fostered Haru, a stray kitten, I have to do quite a bit of shopping for her. From cat litter to wet food, cat snacks, cat milk powder, litter tray, cat toys, catnip to scratch board, I never knew that having a cat involves so much shopping! Thankfully I can get all of Haru’s essentials from pet shops online without having to leave the safety and comforts of my house. The next on my shopping wish list for Haru is an enclosed covered cat litter box. Haru’s current litter box is not covered and she, who’s an OCD cat (just like her human mom!) sometimes causes a mess with sand strewn everywhere with her obsessive digging and covering up after she’s done with her deed .
Online shopping has helped me keep my sanity in check throughout the lockdown. Many of my friends are finding the same thrill scouting and shopping for cheap stuff like house plants for sale and cheap household storage products during the lockdown to beat the cabin fever. One friend even bought cheap condoms during a sale and was tickled pink with her cheap finds that she posted about her purchase on social media.
Analysts and e-commerce companies like Aoin predict that the growing trend of online shopping is here to stay even when the pandemic is over. As I have now mastered the art of online shopping to save money and time, I prefer online shopping over mall shopping. Of course, I do miss mall shopping but I think I’m going to stay safe at home for some time until the pandemic in our country is under control and it’s safe for us to venture out again.
The durian season is back and the durian lover in me is back with a vengeance this year as I hardly had any last year. We’ve been having Musang King for brunch almost everyday the past one week and my cravings for MK durians is still not 100% satiated yet 😬
Thankfully this year we don’t have to break the bank to get the MK durians. Hubby is helping his best friend sell the durians and he gets the durians at a steal and sometimes at no cost. That’s what best friends are for. They’re no fair weather friends and they help each other out in good and bad times.
Are you droooooling already? These MK durians are creamy with thick, bitter sweet pulp and I don’t get the sting in my sensitive throat after eating them. These durians are grown in orchards free from the use of pesticides.
If you want to taste these to-die-for Musang King durians, you can contact Alan at 019-898 1881. The durians are sold online or via phone call/Whatsapp. The durian pulps will be delivered via Grab, free delivery within Taman Desa or you can pick up at Taman Desa.
