I was jogging at our condo grounds at 10a.m. today when Alycia sent me a photo of her SPM result slip. I told her to Whatsapp me after she’s checked her results online. I couldn’t believe my eyes!
Alycia has all the while been quite a diligent student before the pandemic. When the SPM dates kept being postponed with rumors of possible cancellation last year, she just lost her determination to keep revising as she wasn’t sure if the SPM exam would be scrapped just like the UPSR and PT3. Both her sisters escaped the two major government exams last year and these two exams have since been abolished!
Just before the SPM, Alycia had a burnout. I’ve never seen her so relaxed and chill before a major exam! I was super worried but there was nothing much I could do except to encourage her. I didn’t place much hope in her scoring any As. I told myself that as long as she passes the SPM exam, I’ll be happy. The pandemic and prolonged quarantine at home with almost the entire year away from school has caused a lot of mental stress not only to Alycia, but many other students, including Cass.
I never expected Alycia to score an A for her Math and she gave me a huge surprise with As in her Math, Science, English and Economics papers. Some parents are celebrating their kids scoring straight As and I am celebrating Alycia passing her SPM with 4As (with a ‘1A’ in her 1119 GCE (O) ). Her high school recognizes her 1119 GCE (O) score as an A and she’s listed as 5As recipient in the school’s website under the list of excellent SPM achievers.
With this result, Alycia is now qualified for a partial scholarship from Sunway College for her Foundation program! Well done Alycia! I’m so proud of you. Our next goal is for her to achieve a good CGPA for her degree course so that she’ll get another scholarship from the university.
