Sherilyn grasps every opportunity that she has in between online classes and dance & guitar classes to cook. When one has a burning passion in cooking (and of course eating!), one will not find it stressful to slog for hours in the kitchen to churn out comforting food for the tummy. I notice this in many of my friends who love to cook, including my mom. These ladies are all busy yet they can squeeze out time to cook and bake everyday. Some even indulge in midnight baking. Unfortunately I don’t have this trait yet and I don’t think I will ever sacrifice my beauty sleep to bake 🥱 😴. Oh well many years down the road when I don’t have that much on my plate anymore, I think I’m going to spend my free time cooking and baking healthy foods. I’m waiting for this day to come 🤤
It’s such a waste that this budding chef doesn’t want to be in the culinary / F&B industry in future. She’s got such amazing talent and creativity. Instead, she wants to study something that’s science related. I’ll see..
Gin is no ordinary drink. Made popular by James Bond, it has recently been revived as a favourite. Heralded as a cocktail drink, making gin has also become a common home project.
A Brief History of Gin
Did you know that the term ‘Dutch courage’ originated with gin? During the seventeenth century, the Dutch fought in the Thirty Years’ War and were observed by the British to drink gin before battle to give them courage. The British soldiers returned to the UK eager to make and drink their own gin.
Coates & Co. gin, later to be renamed Plymouth, is the oldest gin made in the UK. Produced in the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, which lies behind the Royal Navy, this gin has acquired a distinctive reputation in the UK. Its unique taste has been attributed to being blended with Dartmoor water from Devon.
Gin is made with vodka that has been distilled with various botanicals, which are natural ingredients. The key botanical used in gin is juniper, which first came from Scotland. Other items used to flavour gin are liquorice, citrus peel, ginger, cardamom, angelica root, coriander, and cinnamon, to name a few. However, some gins are artificially flavoured, so you want to watch out for this.
Health Benefits of Gin
The main ingredient in gin, juniper, is a berry that contains vitamin C and flavonoids – the latter is also an ingredient in red wine. Flavonoids fight inflammation, cancer, allergies, and viruses. Juniper berries are also anti-microbial and anti-fungal and fight off the flu. The antioxidants in juniper berries promote younger-looking skin. The juniper berries in gin are also a powerful diuretic. They reduce water retention and bloating and can prevent urinary tract infections.
Flavonoids can reduce neurodegenerative disorders, heart disease, and cancer. Drinking gin (in moderation) may assist in improving blood circulation and, by doing so, increase your lifespan. If you stick to neat gin, you will also be keeping the calories down.
Gin contains citrus peel which is a bitter. These botanicals increase digestive enzymes and stomach acid, aiding digestion.
Luxury Gins
While gin can be made with vodka and a few botanicals, this specialised drink has acquired a market of its own. If you are looking for a luxury gin that is not available in supermarkets, then you need to look no further than distoo.co.uk. A big plus is that you’ll benefit from door-to-door delivery of your chosen products.
Luxury gins make great gifts or can simply be enjoyed at home with a few special friends. Unusual flavours such as raspberry and rhubarb or spiced honey tempt the tastebuds. The old flavours like black pepper, citrus peel, and juniper can be obtained from top distilleries with pedigree quality.
Whether you are simply enjoying a gin and tonic, using it for medicinal purposes, or distilling it yourself, this drink has been revived as a firm favourite for many. The variety is astounding. So, whether you consider yourself an expert on gin or simply someone who enjoys a cocktail with friends, you will find much to explore on the topic.
Sherilyn has been busy with back to back online classes, tuition, online guitar classes and dance classes & practice for an online dance competition, thus has not been cooking and baking as much as she’d like to. Yesterday she managed to squeeze out some time to prep Sukiyaki. She even made the Sukiyaki sauce from scratch as we ran out of Mirin. It was yums!
Today, our 18-yo who does not fit in well in the kitchen was in a rare mood to try out a new recipe – shredded potato meat-free and flour-free pizza! Like a fish out of water, she created quite a mess in the kitchen, but the saving grace is the pizza was delish and chomped down in a jiffy! 😅 It’s not my kind of meal though as it’s high in cheese (bad for my fibroid and cholesterol!) so I ate chopped raw kale, a hard-boiled egg and sourdough bread with nut butter.
The dangers of drug addiction are so insidious because nobody who starts experimenting with substances ever plans on becoming dependent. Yet, often, this problem sneaks up on people and causes many troubles, making it essential to understand just how this process works on the body and mind.
Please visit https://www.gallusdetox.com/ if you are suffering from the dangers of drug abuse and need help. Doing so will help to keep your body and mind safe from withdrawal and the potential physical and emotional problems that persistent drug abuse is likely to cause in those with addictions.
How Drugs Impact the Body
Drugs impact the body in many different ways, chief among them their ability to force the body to release excessive endorphin chemicals. This substance is naturally produced by your mind when you experience pleasurable situations, such as delicious food, a great laugh with friends, or an intimate sexual encounter. However, drugs artificially increase the number of endorphin chemicals.
This release causes an intense pleasure and euphoria that makes drugs seem so rewarding for many people. Substances like morphine and heroin release particularly potent levels of this substance, causing a person to feel excellent. Other changes in the body include various perception changes that individuals may believe make it easier for them to cope with life’s demands and other issues.
For many people, substance abuse is either a minor pastime or something that they occasionally indulge in with friends. However, some people may develop heavy patterns of behavior caused by addiction. These patterns can be tough to overcome and may damage a person’s life for years. So just how does addiction develop, and what can be done to stop it from worsening?
Why This Progresses to Addiction
As drugs change how the body operates, people may find themselves falling into patterns of behavior that may trigger addiction. Often, these changes in action are pretty small and may not seem immediately problematic to many people.
However, they can quickly become a real problem if they aren’t taken seriously and may progress through various steps that worsen with each level of danger.
Early Experimentation – Most people start out trying drugs on a small scope, occasionally or experimenting with different options to find the reaction they like.
More Regular Use – Some people may persist to more frequent use, such as using drugs on the weekend with friends or occasionally using them alone to relax after a hard day.
Daily Use – Once individuals start to use daily, they are on the border of addiction, though their life may still be in control and their everyday use infrequent enough to be managed.
Addiction – True addiction starts once a person feels incapable of living life without their substance and ignores all aspects of their life beyond getting this drug and using it as much as possible.
Early intervention is critical for preventing the worsening of this issue. Many people may find that it’s better to break the habit during regular use periods rather than progressing to full addiction.
Unfortunately, others may become addicted more quickly without realizing it and may need more specialized help to combat this problematic life issue. Various levels of care are available to handle the progression of this condition.
Getting Help Right Away
Managing this problem requires talking to a professional who fully understands addiction care. Most treatment methods start with detoxification, which carefully removes substances from the body without triggering withdrawal symptoms. This method helps make this process relatively pain-free and gives individuals the best chance of overcoming the long-term effects of substance abuse.
Besides snacking on muruku and brownie chips throughout the lockdown, my other guilt pleasure is online shopping. Since mall shopping is not possible now, online shopping gives me almost the same enjoyment! 😁. Today I was browsing for bra tops at Uniqlo and women’s dresses online at Holapick just to satiate my eyes’ desire for the 2021 women’s fashion trends. I’ve not bought a single outfit or shoe this year and can’t believe how self-restraint I am! Even if I do buy new clothes, I have no where to go besides the regular trips to the neighborhood supermarket, pharmacy, bank, dentist and hubby’s shop.
When I was going through my closet the other day, I almost forgot that I have quite a good collection of dresses. I took out a few dresses and hung them on the clothes rack in my room as a reminder to myself to wear them. The next day, I wore a body fitting skater dress to make a quick dash to the mini mart to get toilet papers 🤭. I know it seemed silly to wear this in the middle of a lockdown but if I don’t wear my dresses now, they will never truly have their moments to shine as there seems to be no end to the pandemic.
Fashionistas the world over are sheltering at home, but they’re still getting dressed and celebrating the joys of clothing and looking swag. One thing is obvious – those in the fashion industry seem to be quietly skipping anything that’s too dressy or over-the-top. You’ll find fewer ornate dresses with confusing straps and sleeves or heavily embellished tops when people are looking for comfortable casual clothes for women suited for working from home for the long haul.
As our formal dresses, pencil skirts, formal shirts, soft suits and high heels are now hibernating in our wardrobes, comfort clothing like bermuda pants, track pants, leggings, casual tops and dresses have now taken over. Fashion houses are now on the casual work wear bandwagon, and have designed semi-formal clothing lines that factor in professionalism and comfort. These semi-formal clothing from Holapick are comfortable yet affordable, perfect for the pandemic-affected bank accounts.
The pandemic has caused many of us to rethink how we get dressed each day. Many of us still want variety, latest fashion trend and fun from our wardrobes without the waste to our wallets or our beloved mother earth.
Stay safe and healthy folks! You can still stay fashionable even if you’re at home 😉
I am convinced that Haru understands me when I talk to her. She ‘answers’ me with a soft purr when I ask her questions. She also comes to me whenever I ask her to “come here”. We’re getting more connected by the day. The girls and I dot on her, even Alycia who has a phobia of cats! Alycia now helps to babysit Haru and can bravely carry Haru around without screaming or freaking out like she used to when we first brought Haru into our home.
Haru’s still not spayed yet. I’m trying to coincide the procedure with the girls’ next school holiday. Hopefully she’ll be well behaved when she hits puberty at 6 months old 😸
Our body is composed of about 60% water. It is therefore essential to keep our body well hydrated so that our body can function optimally. The function of water is more than just to quench our thirst. Water is needed to regulate our body temperature, protects all our organs and tissues, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and to moisten tissues in the eyes, nose and mouth. Water can even help with weight loss. When you drink a lot of water, it helps you feel full longer, thus you eat lesser. And the best thing is water is zero in calories!
As our body loses water through sweating, breathing, bodily excretions and digestion, it is therefore important to rehydrate by drinking fluids regularly and eating foods that contain water. This is the reason why it is so important to drink sufficient water so that we remain healthy.
How much water do we need? The current IOM (Institute of Medicine) recommendation for people ages 19 and older is around 131 ounces for men and 95 ounces for women. This refers to your overall fluid intake per day, which includes anything you eat or drink that contains water, like fruits or vegetables. Of this total, men should get around 13 cups from beverages. For women, it’s 9 cups.
Girls and boys between 4 and 8 years old should drink 40 ounces per day, or 5 cups. This amount increases to 56–64 ounces, or 7–8 cups, by ages 9 to 13 years. For ages 14 to 18, the recommended water intake is 64–88 ounces, or 8–11 cups.
How to get motivated to drink enough water
Many people find it a chore to drink the recommended daily water intake. The reasons are varied from dislike to drink water to being too busy with life’s daily activities and work and simply forgetting to drink.
Staying well hydrated and healthy requires a little effort on our part. One way of reminding ourselves to drink is to have a water bottle by our side. You can be working in an office, a student or always on the go. Get yourself a Keepto 64 oz water bottle with time marker and you’ll most likely feel motivated to keep chugging every two hourly.
Keepto water bottles have unique inspirational quote and time marker printed on the bottles. This makes it even easier than ever to drink the perfect amount of water each day. The inspirational quote is great motivation for any fitness goal including weight loss, muscle gain, and tracking water intake during a detox or pregnancy.
Keepto comes in 20 fun colors in a variety of color gradients. Choose one in your favorite colors and you’ll be happy to lug the water bottle everywhere you go to keep yourself well hydrated. You have the option to choose the lid – straw lid or spout lid.
Keeping ourselves well hydrated is a conscious effort. You have to remind yourself to drink throughout the day so that you get the recommended daily water intake everyday to stay healthy. Having a cool water bottle with motivational quotes in your favorite colors next to you makes drinking water just so much more rewarding! I’m a sucker for water tumblers and am now itching to get a Keepto water bottle with time marker 😁
With another full lockdown enforced, I’ve found an outlet to release my boredom and stress through online shopping 😁. I get so much self-satisfaction grabbing free shipping and cashback (sometimes up to 50% on cashback!) vouchers, thus saving tons of 💰💰. These days, I buy most of my stuff via online shopping – from laundry detergent to cat litter, cat biscuits, wet wipes, yoga mats, snacks, books, supplements, nuts, granola, nut jams, lotion, chicken, pork, vegetables and many more. The other day, I ran out of Daiso floor wipes and was overjoyed when I found out that Daiso is now on board Shopee. They were previously not selling online but with so many rounds of lockdown, no business can survive if they don’t go digital and sell online. I quickly ordered my usual dry and wet floor wipes and lint roller replacement tapes and was doubly overjoyed when I managed to claim free shipping AND even received 987 Shopee coins from the purchase equivalent to RM9.87 in credit in my Shopee account! This is far better than shopping physically at a Daiso store as I managed to save so much $$!!
I have at least three more parcels to look out for next week — one for my KN95 face masks, second one for my 2 jars of nut butter and third for my laundry detergent and softener. I got all these at unbelievable deals and saved more $$!
Online shopping can be really addictive but I am buying only essential items these days. There will be no more clothes and bags and impulse purchases anymore like I used to until hubby’s catering business makes a full recovery.
I can’t wait for Shopee’s next sale, which is the Jun25 Payday sale followed by the 7.7 (7th July) sale. Tssk tsssssssk, do you know that while I’m on the throne every morning, I claim my daily free coins, play Spin and Win and Claw Machine to get more coins and claim free vouchers/freebies on my Shopee app? 🤭 🤫
The Covid-19 pandemic and Zoom have created a new era of waist-up dressing, which puts jewelry, especially necklaces and earrings, in the spotlight. These were the categories that designers and fashion trendsetters focused on throughout the pandemic.
Fringe jewelry was a major trend of the season, swinging boldly from ears and collarbones as well as seams. Cute and dazzling figurative jewelry like the devil’s eyes cross chain necklace, lip brooches and the like are a hit with jewelry trendsetters too. There were pretty cascading pearls and beads, chokers as well as mesh. No matter the variation, all of the jewelry pieces are eye-catching, alluring and will animate any outfit during Zoom meets.
Jewelry has always been the finishing touch and versatile companion to your outfit and style. Whether it is a cute spider charm pendant or a chunky chainlink necklace, jewelry will complete your outfit of the day. With some parts of the world opening up, people are raring to show off their shiny metals and gemstones and jewelry is the perfect way to do it.
Some countries are still in enforced lockdown as Covid cases are still surging. Work and daily activities are being organized around the home, transforming houses into home office, classroom and personal training studios. Thus, casual fashion is already a global trend. Fashion trendsetters are wearing more relaxed and funky jewelry like charm bracelets and cute necklaces with themes like ocean, flowers, zodiac signs and the like.
Choosing your jewelry is just like choosing your wardrobe. The most important thing is to pick something that is within your comfort zone and personal fashion style, and makes you feel confident! 😉
We had some excess food from hubby’s shop today and my thought immediately went to Maria. I’ve been wanting to send her food ever since we told her to stop coming to our house temporarily until the number of Covid cases go down and stabilizes. We have a very vulnerable folk at home and do not want to risk her health. Maria has also been told to take unpaid leave from her job as an office cleaner until the lockdown is lifted. She must be financially very tight now.
I called Maria and arranged a place and time to meet up. I gathered all the excess food from hubby’s shop, gave her a box of Vitamin C effervescent to boost her immune system, packed some snacks, bread and kuih and met her at 99 Speedmart. Before I got down from the car, the MIL who was with me passed a RM50 note to me and asked me to give it to Maria 💗
I am meeting Maria again tomorrow to pass her today’s excess food from hubby’s shop. I’m going to pass her some disposable face masks as well. I was shocked when she told me last year that she washed her disposable masks for reuse! I told her to not do that again and then gave her some thick washable face masks.
Lately Sherilyn has not been cooking and baking as much as she used to. She’s been busy with dance rehearsals and online classes as the new school term has just commenced. She now sleeps at 10pm and wakes up at 6am to do her dance practice and feed Haru before taking a quick shower and off to online classes. She’s been rehearsing for an online dance competition with cash prizes for the winners. Our dancing queen is a sucker for dance competitions. Actually she loves taking part in all sorts of competitions and contests since her pre-school years.
Though Sherilyn hasn’t been trying out new recipes lately, she still does simple cooking several times a week. She’s not the type who would eat bread or toast with butter and jam or biscuits for breakfast. Alycia and I always lament that Sherilyn’s got a ‘high class’ palate and can’t lead a simple and humble life. While Alycia, Cass and I have no complaints with a slice or two of Gardenia or Massimo bread for breakfast or lunch, this girl with a royal papillae has to crank up the stove to dish out some fancy-schmancy dish with a touch of aesthetic on her food 🙄
Yesterday she prepped Gilgeori Toast (Korean Street Toast With Cabbage and Egg) for brunch. I was busy and forgot to snap a photo of the toast. It looks something like the one below:
I was jogging at our condo grounds at 10a.m. today when Alycia sent me a photo of her SPM result slip. I told her to Whatsapp me after she’s checked her results online. I couldn’t believe my eyes!
Alycia has all the while been quite a diligent student before the pandemic. When the SPM dates kept being postponed with rumors of possible cancellation last year, she just lost her determination to keep revising as she wasn’t sure if the SPM exam would be scrapped just like the UPSR and PT3. Both her sisters escaped the two major government exams last year and these two exams have since been abolished!
Just before the SPM, Alycia had a burnout. I’ve never seen her so relaxed and chill before a major exam! I was super worried but there was nothing much I could do except to encourage her. I didn’t place much hope in her scoring any As. I told myself that as long as she passes the SPM exam, I’ll be happy. The pandemic and prolonged quarantine at home with almost the entire year away from school has caused a lot of mental stress not only to Alycia, but many other students, including Cass.
I never expected Alycia to score an A for her Math and she gave me a huge surprise with As in her Math, Science, English and Economics papers. Some parents are celebrating their kids scoring straight As and I am celebrating Alycia passing her SPM with 4As (with a ‘1A’ in her 1119 GCE (O) ). Her high school recognizes her 1119 GCE (O) score as an A and she’s listed as 5As recipient in the school’s website under the list of excellent SPM achievers.
With this result, Alycia is now qualified for a partial scholarship from Sunway College for her Foundation program! Well done Alycia! I’m so proud of you. Our next goal is for her to achieve a good CGPA for her degree course so that she’ll get another scholarship from the university.
Haru had her first bath yesterday, at almost 6 months old. When Sherilyn tried to blow dry Haru with a hairdryer with me carrying her with a towel, that scaredy cat got intimidated by the sound of the hairdryer. Her deadly sharp claws popped out instantaneously and the wet pussy struggled and jumped out from my hands and in the process, clawed me with the razors. As the skin on my inner arm, palm, shoulder, fingers and right boop broke, I felt like I was being mauled alive by a tiger!!
The thrills of having a cat 😹
I’ll be bringing our girl to the vet for neutering on Friday. To be honest, this worrywart here is very worried whether there’ll be complication arising from the neutering. I’m very certain that Haru will protest having a cone of shame put on her neck. She wouldn’t even wear a collar. She hates having anything on her neck and body.
I did a Google Review on the vet and read some negative reviews on him, with some commentators stating that their pets died after being spayed by this vet. However, this vet is a much loved and trusted vet by pet owners in our neighborhood and I’ve read very good reviews on him. I’m now torn, unsure of whether to go to this vet or another one. The other vet that’s further away from our neighborhood has mixed Google Reviews too.
Haru’s going to be hissing like a mad cat at the vet’s on Friday. She’s going to be very upset not being able to eat her breakfast (she’s a very hungry cat who needs 3-4 meals a day) and then manhandled for the procedure. We’re all going to have a tough time subduing her. I’m so not looking forward to this Friday 🥺
After a long wait for the Covid-19 vaccine, I finally had my 1st dose of AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine at Universiti Malaya today. My appointment was at 5:30pm and the mil’s at 7:30pm. The mil went with me hoping to be allowed into the hall though her slot was 2 hours later. Thankfully the staff allowed her in after checking the date on her MySejahtera app.
We were given a number at the hall. My number was 1148 and mil’s 1149. When we were seated, the number on call was 1128, only 20 people ahead of us. Not too bad. After going through two stations with staff and doctors talking to us, we were ready to be given the shot. We proceeded to the 3rd station to wait for our turn. The nurse who attended to me was very jovial and I learned later that she has to jab an average of 1,000 people each day! Kudos to her for still being so affable and patient.
Before the shot was administered, the nurse told me to check the syringe to make sure that it has 0.5ml of liquid as proof. Honestly, I could hardly see it as I was wearing goggles and even after pulling down my goggles, I could not see it clearly as 0.5ml is such a minuscule amount. The shot was painless (and I have extremely low pain threshold) like what everyone had commented and I looked at the needle as it went into my arm. A relative who was given the shot saw liquid dribbling down his arm and he demanded that another shot be given to him. There were also incidences of needles breaking during the process. So to all those of you who are going to have the shot taken, take note of the needle and liquid before and during the shot.
After the shot, we were given a card with the number ’30 minute’ printed on it. The 30-minute is for post-vaccination observation. We were at the 4th station, waiting for our vaccine card. The waiting time was exactly 30 minutes and because of this, the mil and I needn’t have to wait at the observation station anymore. After receiving our vaccine card, we left the hall, only to be surprised with a door gift! Outside the hall, the mil and I did the must-have after-shot photography at the photo booth for social media bragging rights🤭
We checked in at the hall entrance via MySejahtera at 4:54pm. Exit time was around 5:55pm. I was given my shot at 5:30pm sharp. The waiting time for the vaccine card was exactly 30 minutes. The timing is SO impeccable and impressive. The entire process took us no more than an hour. We were truly impressed with the efficiency of the staff and system. There were no uncontrollable crowds like what some people had posted on social media. I guess this is because as more vaccines are administered daily, the organizers and staff are getting more organized and efficient.
Here are some of the pix taken on the day of our AZ vaccine. I can’t wait to receive the second dose 😁
Tomorrow will be my turn to be vaccinated with AstraZeneca! Venue is at Universiti Malaya. The mil is also having hers tomorrow at the same venue, 2 hours later. So we’re be going together. Hubs had his AZ vaccine on 23 May 2021 and all was well with him. He had almost no side effects, except for having a slight chill 2 days later and that’s about it. I’m envious of him!
Honestly, I am worried of the side effects, especially the controversial blood clots and stroke. I was anemic 4 years ago (caused by a fibroid) and I’ve not had another blood work done to check the red blood cells after a fibroid removal surgery performed in May 2017. I’ve been diligently popping Sangobion (iron supplement) daily for the past one month. I’m not sure if being anemic has any correlation with blood clot. That may just be my unfounded fear. I’m just a worrywart.
Wish me luck guys! I need lots of it. I shall be updating everyone on my experience at the vaccination centre and whether I have any side effects from the vaccine.
