30 April 2021 ~ Random Updates

Today is the last day of April and Alycia’s a very happy girl because on Monday next week, she doesn’t have to babysit the toddlers in the pre-school or tutor primary school kids anymore. She’ll be doing brand promotion via social media, which is related to her course of study in college/uni, though she has zero training in this area. However, she still has to teach two pre-schoolers as the pre-school owner doesn’t want these two kids to keep having different teachers. Alycia’s fine with this arrangement as long as she doesn’t have to handle toddlers or teach the entire day.

My dad has finally received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine (Pfizer) early this week! Thank God he hasn’t experienced any side effects, except for a sore arm. If you still haven’t registered for the vaccine, please do so as soon as possible. We have doctor friends and relatives who keep encouraging everyone to be vaccinated. The benefits of the vaccine outweigh any side effects that one may experience.

Papa is extremely pleased with the service that he received when he was at the vaccination center in Ipoh.
Haru is Cass’ de-stressor. Being a Chinese Independent High School student is no easy feat and Cass spends her break time in between lessons playing with Haru.
Cass loves doing this to Haru’s face 😹
I ordered KFC for dinner on Tuesday as there was a RM10 discount promotion. I just love it when I don’t have to clean up a greasy messy kitchen!
I gave some bland tasting KFC chicken breast meat to Haru and she gobbled down the chicken meat within a minute. She loves chicken and pork.

5 Ways Poor Eyesight Can Affect Your Life

Poor eyesight is a terrible thing to deal with and can affect a great many aspects of your life. However, by understanding what it can do to you, you can plan to mitigate its negative effects and work to overcome the challenges posed by poor vision. To that end, this article aims to explain some of the most frequent issues found in people with poor eyesight so that you can learn to deal with and avoid these issues.

1. Frequent Headaches

A particularly irksome and disruptive side effect of poor vision is the constant development of headaches in patients with poor vision. These are not only disruptive, but painful and often if the sufferer is vulnerable to migraines, they can be downright debilitating when they emerge. This pain and suffering is something that most sufferers of poor vision must accustom themselves to. However, with the strategic use of pain killers, the bulk of these headaches could be dealt with. If you are experiencing frequent headaches, make sure to consult your doctor.

2. Poor Mental Health

The constant stresses and pressures of dealing with life with low vision can take a serious toll on the mental health of those who suffer from impaired vision and this means conditions like depression, anxiety and other psychological problems are relatively common in these individuals and that too can take a significant toll on their lives.

3. Reduced Quality of Life

This all comes together to produce a rather reduced quality of life for those suffering from extreme vision issues. However, there are products and support services designed to provide the best quality of life.

4. Increased Risk of Injury

Along with poor spatial awareness, there is an increase in your risk of personal injury. This is for a number of reasons but most commonly, you simply don’t see hazards before it is too late for you to avoid being injured. These injuries can range from the relatively benign, like scraped knees, to the downright deadly, such as car accidents and significant falls. This potential hazard to your life is one of the more major symptoms of poor eyesight and fortunately only affects a small portion of the population who have severely degraded vision.

If you suffer from these symptoms and you cannot seem to mitigate and control them, then more drastic solution could be right for you. Laser eye surgery, such as LASIK in Baton Rouge, is one such option to remedy these issues and give you a new lease on life.Β

5. Poor Spatial Awareness

An inherent effect of a reduced ability to see is reduced awareness of what is around you, this can permeate the life of people with poor eyesight and can even become dangerous if they are not careful. On top of that, this lack of spatial awareness can even exclude those with particularly poor vision from doing things that many people take for granted, such as driving

This can be somewhat mitigated through the use of glasses, but they are not a guaranteed solution to the problem.

Chemical & Pesticide Free Vegetables Delivered To Your Doorstep

I received my first premium veggie box from Farm To Home Delivery last week. The veggies are chemical and pesticide free and some are carbon veggies. The plan that I took is a RM288 per month plan where I’ll get a RM72 premium veggie box (worth over RM81) every week for a month (4x per month). I can choose 15 types of veggies from more than 33 types of veggies that are listed in a google form.

My package includes FREE washing of veggies in Biolux ozone water for leafy, non-leafy and root-base veggies.

What I like about the veggies from Farm To Home Delivery is they are really fresh, crisp and clean. As they are pre-washed with Ozone water, the green leafy veggies don’t have mud/soil on them. They are also cheaper and fresher than the organic vegetables that I usually buy from the supermarket and night market.

Fresh, crisp and clean juicy Ice Plant, which we transformed into a delicious salad for lunch the next day.
Fresh and flawless cauliflower sans any black dot on it. Love it!
Sunflower microgreens.
Microgreens may be tiny, but a new study shows trendy microgreens punch well above their weight when it comes to nutrition.
Microgreens are four- to 40-fold more concentrated with nutrients than their mature counterparts!
Our in-house chef transformed the Ice Plant, sunflower microgreens and cherry tomatoes into a healthy, refreshing and delicious salad with Japanese salad dressing the next day, to go with homemade toast with Pepper Jack cheese.
I only use organic or pesticide-free veggies when it comes to salad. Actually 95% of the veggies I buy are organic or pesticide-free.

The mil used half a head of Napa cabbage to cook ‘jai’ (vegetarian dish) and our teenage chef used the other half to make kimchi.

Salad on Papadam, by Cass. This makes eating junk food a little less sinful πŸ˜‹

I just LOVE all the vegetables that I received from Farm To Home Delivery and can’t wait to start ordering my second veggie box! Can you believe that we’ve almost wiped out all the veggies that we received in our first veggie box in less than a week? Everyone in our family is a heavy eater of fruits and veggies and I spend quite a bit on them everyday.

I also love the fact that I don’t have to risk myself going to the supermarket and wet market in the thick of the pandemic to buy veggies. The veggies are delivered to my condo and Cass helped me to carry them up from the lobby.

Eating organic or pesticide-free veggies can be slightly more expensive than regular veggies, but I strongly believe in investing in healthy foods for our health. The benefits that you’ll reap from healthy eating is worth every cent.

Haru In Our Home

This little fella who’s estimated to be about 4 months old is getting more daring each day. Lately she loves climbing up our dining table to sniff everything on the table. We’re still trying to teach her that the dining table is out of bounds and I think it will take time for her to finally understand. A few days ago, someone let Haru out of the cage but didn’t watch her and went to the bathroom. I was busy working on the computer. When the mil came out of the kitchen, I almost fell off my chair when I heard her screaming and hollering on top of her voice! Haru was standing on the Tupperware container of bread that she had just baked, sliced and stored in the container!!

And there were a few incidences that Haru climbed up the mil’s bed but I managed to bring her down in the nick of time before the queen saw it πŸ˜…

Haru watching Korean drama with her sister.
Haru’s safe haven – under the sofa as no one can catch her if she’s there. She doesn’t like to be placed in her cage.
Tapau cat – any takers?
Haru loves it whenever we put her in a snug plastic bag and carries her everywhere.

Updates on Cassandra

Barely 2 weeks into reopening after an almost 6-month break, many schools across the country had to be closed again this week as the number of Covid-19 positive cases in schools are surging fast and furiously.

Yesterday Cass’ high school sent a notice to inform that Junior 1 students only need to attend physical classes on Mondays and Tuesdays and on online mode from Wednesdays through Saturdays. However, another notice was shot out barely 24 hours later to inform that classes across school will be on a 100% online mode 😩

Here we go again πŸ₯±.

I pray that there will be no more MCO or our entire economy will collapse. I am so sick and tired of the pandemic and how it’s affecting our lives.

As I’ve said it before, online classes are not effective for most students including mine and I think it’s quite a waste of our money on school fees. But the school has no choice given the perilous Covid situation now. In fact, last week in Cass’ class, several students reported that they were in close contact with Covid positive patients and the entire class was told to stay home for a day pending the Covid swab results of the affected students. Another classmate was in close contact with a Covid positive student who takes the same van.

Today is Cass’ Urodynamics procedure at HKL. It’s the second time that she went through this invasive procedure. The first was done 7 years ago when she was 6 years old. The test today shows that almost everything in the urinary tract looks and works pretty normally, which now narrows down the head of Urologist’s suspicion of an ectopic ureter. The recent MRU done recently showed vague images of a ureter exiting abnormally but a Cystoscopy done later (early this year) did not detect the suspected ectopic ureter. As Cass had undergone two abdomen surgeries when she was 13 months old, it is not easy to see things clearly inside with adhesions and stuff.

Another MRU (MRI) with Lasix (dye) has been ordered and the date will be given to us soon… which means that Cass has to go through another Covid PCR swab test 😒

Super duper long queue outside HKL, which started from the lift area to the road outside (over 300 meters long).
Dang bloody hot in the sun waiting. The long queue was caused by Covid-19 SOPs — scanning of My Sejahtera app, temperature screening and giving out of sticker to those who’ve done the screening.
Cass brought along her Chemistry book to get some homework done while waiting.
Cass was allowed to bring her mobile phone into the Urodynamics Suite. Part way through the procedure, I got a pleasant surprise from her via Whatsapp.

The procedure lasted for about 1.5 hours and then we had a long consultation with the head of Urologist.

To be continued…

Different Faces of Haru

Cute and cuddly like a plush toy kitten
Still looking like a tiger cub sometimes.
Spoilt rotten by Cass.
Sometimes acting like a ‘longkang’ rat.
Loves watching video games and Korean drama while being a lap cat.
Milk drunk. She LOVES drinking milk from her bottle and wouldn’t want to let go of the bottle even when she’s finished the bottle of milk… just like a human baby who refuses to be weaned off the bottle!
Puzzled looking tigard / leoger.
Always gets very perplexed with the shadows from the morning sun and thinks that there’s someone on the door, wall and floor.

Haru is Cassandra’s wish came true.

Update On Alycia’s Temporary Job

Alycia has finally told the owner of the international pre-school and daycare centre that she will resign and work until the end of April. Teaching is totally not for her. In addition to teaching regular pre-schoolers and primary school kids, she has to teach a 6-year old Autistic boy and even put him to sleep! Some kids would make her tell them stories and teacher Alycia has to put on her best thinking cap to cook up some silly stories to amuse those kids 🀣.

Alycia is not one who can create funny stories off the cuff. She’s not even one who likes children! I wonder how she did that!

Wait, there’s more!

Alycia also has to help care for babies at the daycare, like putting them to sleep, watch them when the main caregivers are busy and bring the babies to their parents’ cars in the evening when the teachers in charge are busy. Alycia comes home feeling jaded everyday. She finds teaching kids such a bore to her. She can’t wait to quit this job.

One evening last week, there was a bad frog-choker and in the heavy rain, Alycia had to carry a 15-month old baby boy to his parent’s car — one hand carrying the baby and another holding an umbrella. I was in disbelief! I thank God that Alycia didn’t slip and fall in the torrential rain as she was only wearing slippers and she has never done anything of this sort before in her life πŸ™

I have to agree that this job is totally not suitable for Alycia. Nonetheless, I think she has gained a wealth of experience in her very first formal job which requires her to mingle with other teachers, parents, the owners and of course children. And even babies. Fortunately she has experience carrying and pacifying her twin baby cousins from Singapore, else she will be clueless on how to deal with babies and toddlers.

Coming back to Alycia’s informal verbal resignation. The owner of the pre-school and daycare counter-offered Alycia. She promised Alycia that teaching kids will only be until end of April. As Alycia will be pursuing a course in Mass Communication, the owner gave Alycia a new job specification, which will be related to her studies. Starting May till July 2021, Alycia will be in charge of handling the centre’s social media pages, viz brand promotion and social media presence. Alycia has accepted the offer and she has to learn how to go about doing it. She hasn’t even started her Mass Comm course yet. The new job scope will be a good stepping stone for Alycia to begin her first job that’s related to her studies in college and uni. Alycia will commence college in September 2021. I’m so excited for her!

Free Online Games For Kids and Adults

Online games have been getting the bad rap from parents as many children are unable to manage their time well when they spend too much time on online games. If parents create reasonable guidelines with their children and create positive agreements around playing online games, then struggles like kids neglecting their homework, staying up late playing on their computers, disinterest in school activities and problems with children isolating themselves will not become an issue. The key is once you’ve set out the rules and guidelines on gaming time, you as the parent has to follow through and reward or revoke the privilege accordingly.

Parents can make game time a reward by setting their child’s gaming time contingent to her actually fulfilling or failing a goal. For example, your child can be allowed to play for an hour on school days if she maintains a certain grade or completes all her homework.

If gaming time is managed well, online games can bring some benefits to a child.  They can help supplement your child’s learning curve and teach them key life skills such as:

1. Help your child exercise creativity.

2. Enable your child to learn a little about setting and achieving goals

3. Enable your child to work on online social skills

4. Your child can absorb information in a fun way

5. Help your child with attention to details

6. Create problem-solving and planning skills

7. Help build resilience.

Cass is an online games junkie and she’s pretty adept in all the games that she plays. Now that she’s 13, she knows how to manage her time in a way that she has the time to play online games and time to finish her homework. Late submission of homework in her high school would mean marks being deducted, so it’s a great deterrent to her from submitting her homework late.

Cass has been playing online games since she was 3 years old when I got her an iPad. She started off with educational online games that are interactive. That’s where she learned her ABCs, 123s, ‘suku kata’ (Malay phonics), English phonics, Math equations and much more. She’s now hooked on games within Roblox such as Arsenal, Islands, Jailbreak and some other simulator games (bee swarm, sushi shop, bubble gum, etc.) and a few others that she explores when she has the time. Sometimes she plays Minecraft and Super Tetris. I like Super Tetris too and we sometimes play it together. Super Tetris is a brain exercise game. According to a study, brain imaging shows playing Tetris leads to a thicker cortex and may also increase brain efficiency. Whenever I have too much worries on my mind, playing Tetris is one of the ways that help me to de-stress.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is qG9vi1n.png

Do you want to know where you can play online games like Super Tetris, Pac Rat and many more for FREE? Check out Plays.org, a website where everyone can play fun online games for free and the best part is all the games can be quickly played from the browser on desktop computers, iPads, laptops, Kindly Fire and mobile devices.

Another game that I like from Plays.org is Pac Rat, a game similar to the classic Pac Man. While Pac Man is brutally difficult after the first few levels, Pac Rat is much easier than Pac Man and I actually prefer games that are not too difficult. My aim of playing games is to de-stress and it makes me feel accomplished when I score high in my games πŸ˜†

Flight Simulator Air Traffic Control is a fun brain-teaser game for both children and adults. Cass and I had fun playing it. The goal is to safely land planes and helicopters on the right landing pads and without causing the aircrafts to collide. It sounds easy but the aircrafts keep popping out from the sides so quickly that I didn’t even have the time to strategize how best to maneuver the respective aircrafts to their destinations on the best routes to avoid a collision.Β

Plays.org has over 100 browser-based games which you can easily findΒ  from their user-friendly website. There is a catalog which is located at the bottom of the website where all the games are listed, such as Animal, Golf, Physics, Strategy, Simulation and much more. And there’s no annoying advertisements on this gaming website.Β  Another plus point!

If you’re an online game stan and are looking for some free fun games to play, Plays.org is the place to go to. But play with caution as the games can be quite addictive πŸ˜‰

Pet Therapy

After a long hard day in a ‘military’ style Chinese high school, the moment Cass gets home at 3.30pm, she puts down her bag and picks up her beloved Haru to get a dose of pet therapy to de-stress 😻

Cass loves feeding Haru boiled shredded chicken breast meat. She makes Haru do tricks like sit, stand and shake hand before giving her a piece of meat. I think most of the time that Haru stands, sits and shakes hand is just a fluke. But over time, I think Haru will some how understands the commands.

But can cats be trained to do tricks?

I think most cats will be happy to do this with the right motivation and for Haru, her motivation is the chicken. She is crazy over boiled chicken meat.

Below: Haru nibbling on my ankle today. This is her way of initiating a game or play with me. She gnaws at my ankle and then runs away like a panther and then hides under the sofa. When I turn back, she pounces on my leg from the back and nibbles on my leg again.

Card board and box loving cat. Which cat doesn’t, eh?

At almost 4 months old, Haru still LOVES her milk / water bottle time. Alycia is cat-sitting Haru here.

Haru The Little Biter

Haru loves to bite playfully on our ankles and both my ankles now have holes on them! She’s adorable to bits but when she gets too excited from playing, she behaves like a sakai and embeds her sharp fangs into our legs, arms or hands! Cass has so many red scratches and bite marks on her hands that one day her teachers will surely query her, from suspicion of her being abused by her parents πŸ™€πŸ˜Έ

Sherilyn and Cass love to swaddle Haru with a cloth and make her their lap cat while they attend online classes. And Haru seems to enjoy it too.

Haru’s favorite spot has got to be my box of Izumio under the table. Though I give her empty boxes to play with but she only likes my Izumio box with packets of Izumio inside! She likes to sit on my chair too.

Tactical Clothing For Outdoor Sports

One of the endurance courses that I had to go through when I signed up for a 10-day wilderness adventure camp for teenagers (similar to Outward Bound School) was a long-distance cycling course under the sizzling hot sun on a trunk road from one town to another. That course was enervating but extremely fun as I did it together with my besties, along with wonderful and fun-loving instructors. That evening we were all sunburnt with stings on our red raw skin.  I should have asked mum to bring me shopping for some tactical clothing to protect me from the elements before the camp.  The next morning, we had another obstacle course (quite similar to what the army does) which was laid out in the jungle. We got muddy from head to toe from having to crawl commando style in a muddy tunnel on the jungle trail.

At the end of the 10 days wilderness adventure camp, my parents barely recognized me when they picked me up from the bus station.Β  From a snow white, my skin had turned bronze, a result of being grilled under the merciless sun for 10 days! And it started to peel badly for the next couple of weeks. I looked really horrible with blotchy skin but my skin turned fair again over time. I really should have prepared myself well with tactical clothing for the 10 best days of my life to avoid getting such bad sunburn.

Tactical clothing are built to withstand the elements, and the abuse of wear and tear.  These specially tailor clothing are a solid choice for the adrenaline junkies and adventurous travelers. If you’re into mountain climbing, jungle trekking or hiking, it would be a smart choice to invest in some tactical shirts for men or women to stay safe from the elements.

To shop for the best tactical clothing for your adventures of a lifetime in the jungle, sea mountains and off-roading, why not have a look at Wayrates.com? They have a good range of unisex tactical clothing and footwear for you to select from.

Sunway College and Sunway University

I got an appointment for a briefing and tour of Sunway College and Sunway University last Friday. It’s our second visit to the university; the first was in December 2019 when we were there by invitation for a screening of the short films produced by undergraduates of the digital film production faculty.

We were all awed by the facilities offered by the university and college. Its strategic location from Sunway Pyramid, LRT station, eateries and other amenities is by far one of the star attractions, not to mention the university’s strategic partnership with Lancaster University, UK (QS World University ranking #135; top 10 universities in UK). Graduates will have a degree certificate from Sunway University and Lancaster University. In fact, almost all my friends with college-going kids send their kids to Sunway College / University.

With the My30 Unlimited Travel Pass offered by our PM during the MCO last year for unlimited public transportation at only RM30 a month, I think we won’t have to spend too much on her transportation from our home in KL to Sunway. Even if I factor in Grab fare on days that she takes Grab, it is still cheaper than renting a room at the campus.

Lessons at the college and university are still conducted on a hybrid mode now. I will most probably be registering Alycia for the September 2021 intake. In the meantime, Alycia has gotten herself a part-time job as a teacher at a daycare / after-school centre in our neighborhood. This is the daycare that Sherilyn used to go to when she was in primary school. And I’m still looking around for a suitable driving academy for Alycia to start driving lessons. I got a shock when I was told by a driving school at my neighborhood that it will cost almost RM2,600 for a driving package!!!

Sunway University is letting its students do social distancing with the stars by placing celebrity cut-outs in its communal areas.
We walked across the bridge linking Sunway University to Sunway Pyramid for some retail therapy.

Raising Duit Smart Kids In A Digital Era

From a very young age, I was taught by my parents to be thrifty, never to spend unessentially and to save as much money as I possibly can for rainy days.Β  I made my first 10 sen when I was 8 years old in 1981 when I sold my homemade book marks to my class mates.Β  When I turned 12, I was allowed to keep the ang pow money that I received during CNY. I also did house chores to earn money from my parents. Β Β I’ve never looked back since. The 10 sen that I earned have grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Thus, it’s natural for me to teach my 3 girls to inculcate good money habits from a young age.Β  My girls are naturally pretty financially savvy now that they are teenagers. They think twice or thrice before buying something and only if the item is very cheap. They will give up an offer for a cup of boba milk tea or a lavish meal in exchange for the money and then save up to buy things that they want. They also have an entrepreneur mind – they continuously think of ways to grow their savings via little business endeavors – from selling old story books and pre-loved items to baking cookies and much more.

How Young Should We Start?

It’s never too early to start instilling good money habits to your kids. Start by telling them that everything that they have from food to toys, books, clothes, etc need to be purchased with money.  And they have to work to get money. Explain to your kids that it is only through good financial planning that they will have extra money for savings. Explain to them how vital it is to have savings.

Importance of Financial Literacy

About 84,805 Malaysians were declared bankrupt between 2015 and 2019. Based on the figure provided by the Insolvency Department, people below the age of 34 made up 26 per cent of the bankruptcy cases. This is alarming because it reflects that the level of financial literacy among young Malaysians on the ground is still lacking. When someone is being financially illiterate, it will lead to poor financial decisions such as over-utilisation of credit cards and overspending, which end up in low financial well-being as what has been happening to the youth of Malaysia in recent years.  This is made worse during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people were totally unprepared to face the loss of income, whether short term or long term.
