Our Sunday – 30 April 2017

The girls got up very early today to soak in some glorious morning sun and sweat it out at the park this morning. Lately, Cass and I are into sun gazing. I actually feel much more energetic after gazing briefly at the morning sun and soaking in the sun’s energy every morning. Go Google sun gazing to read more and practise this with caution lest your retina gets damaged.  Alycia had fix an appointment with her classmate at the park to practise running for their school sports day. While the entire lot of family members were at the park, I had a blissful and peaceful 2 hours at home alone – doing house chores 😀  All I need is quiet time to myself without anyone calling or bugging me and I’ll be happy, even if it means engaging in some slavery chores. I am simple like that.

After everyone had showered, we went to church.  Lunch was at Bread Fruits…

My divine roast veggies and Portobello salad with grilled salmon, washed down with a glass of freshly juiced beetroot + lemon + cucumber + dragon fruit juice. Cass and Drama Queen had mango + pear + orange juice.

Grilled chicken avocado sandwich.

Breakfast set with arugula

While shopping for groceries, we saw a humungous fish head, half the height of Drama Queen at the fish section. I think that fish head probably weighs heavier than Drama Queen!

Back home, the big princess continued with revision in her room. Her first term exam starts on Wednesday.  Cass still has a Math paper to sit for on Tuesday but she’s been chillaxing as if her exam is over.  Drama Queen’s exam is over and she’s been practising some dance moves for a performance in school.

Random Matters

A big thank you to all those who messaged me privately and to Chris for letting me know that you can view the latest picture in my blog. You girls rock!💃 😊

I’m hoping that the pictures uploaded on Imgur will appear in my blogs permanently. The problem with pictures uploaded on Facebook is that they are not permanent. They may appear in my blogs for a few days or weeks until Facebook changes its settings again. Facebook is very, very fond of changing its settings / platform and I find it super annoying! Once Facebook changes its platform or settings, the pictures once copied from Facebook to my blogs will fail to appear in my blogs. And my nightmare begins! Not seeing pictures loading in the blog is every blogger’s nightmare 😱

I have some updates on my missing parcel from the U.K.  19 days after the parcel went missing without a trace, I checked Pos Malaysia’s website and what do I know? The parcel is now in the radar again, woo hoo!!  It seems like there is a human error from the immigration side in the U.K. I think my parcel was inadvertently left behind instead of getting onto the aircraft. And it was after 17 days that the Immigration staff realized my  parcel sitting around. Today I checked Pos Malaysia’s tracking system and both parcels have reached Malaysia, woooooohooooo, thank you Lord!! I have been praying really hard for my parcel to be found and He has heard my prayers. Praying hard now that I will receive both my parcels by early next week.

I am ever so grateful to Anna of Sweet Cures of York. She has immediately sent me another parcel worth RM800 of Waterfall D-Mannose as replacement of the supposedly missing parcel. I will pay her for the second order as soon as I have received it.

Cass has finished almost all her tests except for Math paper, which will be held on Tuesday next week. Guess what happened this week, which is Cass’ exam week? Her Mandarin tutor fell really ill and could not come to tutor her. With no one to help her revise all the Mandarin subjects, I enlisted my mil’s help to tutor Cass 😆  I also solicited the help of Drama Queen to test Cass on some Science questions last night.

We can have some fun out of the house over the long weekend in between doing some Math questions.  Have a happy long weekend and Happy Labour Day to all!

Home-cooked Dinner – 25 April 2017

Our cozy weeknight dinner at home with simple yet yummy dishes:

Sauteed organic broccoli with garlic, fish balls and carrot slices; tomato omelette; Happy Call Pan-fried ribeye steak.

On the foreground are pork ribs and ‘phang kor’ from the soup. ‘Phang kor’ is a seed that looks and tastes very similarly to ginkgo and it has an outer layer of dark red velvety shell, which is removed prior to cooking.  The seeds can be steamed and eaten as it is or cooked as one of the ingredients in a soup.  ‘Phang kor’ are grown on trees and the red fruits hanging all over the tree are really a sight to behold.  Sorry I don’t know the name of this fruit/seed in English. One may find these trees grown outside the compound at housing estates. They are easily obtainable from the wet markets back in my beloved hometown of Ipoh. Oh, this post is making me miss my beautiful hometown now!

Organic Barley, Lemon Grass And Pandan Drink

I made a big pot of organic barley drink today. The concoction composes of organic unhulled barley, organic Job’s Tears, organic lemon grass powder and organic pandan (screw pine leaves) powder.

Due to its alkalinity, barley water has been used since ancient times to treat various digestive conditions. Barley water is prepared by using one part of barley with 15 parts of water, which is boiled till it becomes 2/3rd of its basic solution. Being extremely alkaline, barley water is also beneficial for those suffering from gallstones. The water-soluble fibre content in it helps prevent formation of stones and cures existing ones. It is also a good remedy for kidney problems and is a traditionally acclaimed drink for supporting and nourishing kidneys in times of stress.

Directions:
~Wash the barley pearls and Job’s Tears several times.

~When the barley pearls and Job’s Tears have turned mushy (about 1 – 1.5 hours later in medium flame), add in the organic lemon grass powder and organic pandan leaves powder and stir until the powders are completely dissolved. Then turn off the fire.  I added 1 teaspoon each.

~ Pour out the barley water using a stainless steel sieve.

As this is my first time trying out this concoction, I didn’t add too much of both powders, lest the drink tastes weird. But the drink turned out great!  I love the color of the drink, which has a pretty hue of green.  The drink is really refreshing when chilled. Even Cass who absolutely hates barley water has no issue gulping her cuppa green barley down without pinching her nose.  This girl always drinks her barley water with her nose pinched *roll eyes*

The next time I prepare this concoction again, I will add more lemon grass and pandan powder. I prefer it to have a stronger aroma of lemon grass and pandan.

Pandan leaves are slightly bitter in nature, thus, do go easy on the pandan powder.

Health benefits of lemon grass:

Lemongrass is used for treating digestive tract spasms, stomachache, high blood pressure, convulsions, pain, vomiting, cough, achy joints (rheumatism), fever, the common cold, type-2 Diabetes and exhaustion. It is also used to kill germs and as a mild astringent.

Prevention of bacteria: Lemongrass might help prevent the growth of some bacteria and yeast.

Lowers Cholesterol: Studies have shown that the regular consumption of lemongrass has shown significant results in sustaining healthy levels of triglycerides and reducing the LDL cholesterol in the body.

Detoxification: Lemongrass helps in cleansing and flushing harmful toxic wastes out of the body, as a result of its diuretic properties.

Cancer: Lemongrass is effective in treating various types of cancers without affecting the healthy normal cells of the body. Research conducted to prove the anti-cancerous activity of lemongrass has shown promising outcomes in the prevention of skin cancer. Studies have shown that a certain component, citral, which is present in lemongrass, helps in inhibiting the growth of hepatic cancer cells during the initial phases and prevents any further production of cancerous cells. Another study has provided supporting evidence regarding the anti-proliferative effect of citral in impeding the growth of human breast cancer cells and the induction of apoptosis.

Health benefits of pandan (screw pine leaves):

Reduce Cramps / pain relief
If you have cramps regularly, you can use pandan leaves as a traditionally cure to help reduce those cramps. Pandan leaves can also help you with gastrointestinal tract cramps, especially stomach cramps. You can make pandan leaves tea and drink it to help you reduce your cramps.

Anti-carcinogenic Properties
Another amazing benefit of pandan leaves is that they are anti-cancerous. It can counteract the effect of toxins and inhibits cancer cell development.

Reduce Fevers
Pandan can help in reducing fever. It is a traditional remedy in treating fevers.

Other health benefits of pandan include : mild laxative for children, detoxifying the body, lowers high blood pressure, helps to strengthen weak nerves, boosts appetite and it can also help men with impotence.

Song Bird

Today in the car on the way to piano class, the song sang by Camila Cabello was played on Mix FM.

Me – I love this song. Do you know the title of this song?

Cass – It’s called Bad Things and it’s sung by Camila Cabello.

Me – Wow, how did you know?!!

Cass – And Camila Cabello recently separated from Fifth Harmony.

Me – Wah, you know more than me!

Cass – I overheard er che (2nd sis) and che che (big sis) talking about it that day.

Me – If only the 3 of you can remember your school text book stuff this well, I’ll be very happy!

On our way home from piano class, Alessia Cara’s Scars To Your Beautiful was played on Mix FM.

Cass – this is my favorite song mummy. It’s called Scars To Your Beautiful and it’s sung by Alessia Cara.

Me – how come you know the title of all the latest songs? And you know the full names of the singers too!  What’s this song all about? Why do you like it?

Cass – I think Scars To Your Beautiful is a very meaningful song. The song is telling those people with cancer and without hair, those who are fat and those with scars that they are beautiful. I like this song very much.  I was thunderstruck that those words came out from Cass’ mouth. Only 9 years old and she has such maturity to appreciate such a meaningful and beautiful song.

And then Cass sang along to Scars To Your Beautiful  and got almost all the lyrics to the song spot on.

Random Matters

A mishmash of feelings is now running through my mind.  I have been getting the heebie-jeebies for the past one week. My parcel from the UK is most likely lost in transit. There has been no update in the Pos Malaysia’s tracking  site on the parcel’s whereabouts after it left the UK. The last date it was updated in the system is 6 April 2017, from the UK end.   My missing parcel is now like the missing MH370 flight from KL to Beijing – lost without a trace!

The parcel consists of Cass’ Waterfall D-Mannose. I have been purchasing this item online from Sweet Cures of York since 2010 and have never encountered any problem with the shipping.  The Waterfall D-Mannose this time cost almost RM800 (price fluctuates with exchange rate).   With my previous orders,  all the parcels reached KL within 10 days of payment.

I called Pos Malaysia today to check on the parcel status and as expected, the reply I got from the unempathetic attending customer service staff was “no update in the system, I can’t help you”.  Is this what we call “Malaysia Boleh”?  So meh!!  I emailed the seller yesterday and she assured me that she will help me keep an eye on the parcel.

What if the parcel is really lost? I don’t think the parcel is insured. Praying hard that God hears my prayers and will help me get hold of the parcel by this week, failing which I will have to fork out another RM800 through my nose for the D-Mannose 😭

Just a moment ago, the owner of Sweet Cures emailed me and offered to resend another parcel to me.  I would feel really bad that if the parcel is indeed lost in transit, Anna has to bear the cost of resending another parcel to me, all the way from the United Kingdom. God bless Anna’s heart. She has always been very helpful to me from day one.  This is why I keep going back to her to order for the past 7 years.  If you know of anyone who keeps getting recurrent UTI attacks, Waterfall D-Mannose is definitely a life saver and I fully recommend getting it from Sweet Cures and no where else. There are some online stores in Malaysia selling it but I only have confidence in D-Mannose from Sweet Cures.  Caveat is that D-Mannose will only work if the bacteria is E.Coli as only E.Coli will attach to D-Mannose like velcro and get flushed out from the urinary tract.  Most UTI attacks are caused by E.Coli, though other bacteria like Klebsiella, etc are responsible too.

On another note, today has been a very fruitful day for me 🙂  I surpassed my own quota for new registrations at Naturally Plus, all in just one day 💪😊.   Though today has been a very  hectic day for me with me filling out application forms like mad and getting them couriered to the office. I get a sense of achievement from doing it. Oh yes, the moolah I get from doing all these is one of the motivating factors too 😊

On a lighter note, what would you as a  mummy do when your 9-year old gives you a desperate and forlorn look when she just found out that she has run out of white color paint while rushing off a piece of painting meant for a contest? It’s late into the night and she just needs the white paint to put a finishing touch to her art piece? Under duress, I had a light bulb moment and used undiluted toothpaste  😜  The joy and twinkle I see on my little one’s face is just priceless!

Izumio For Good Health

Wednesday is CoCo day in school for Drama Queen and Cass. They stay back until 3:30 p.m. and will only be home around 4-ish p.m.  Ever since Cass had a bout of high fever (41 degrees Celsius) on her second CoCo day in school about 2 months back, I have this phobia that she would have high fever again after being in the hot afternoon sun on CoCo days. To me, she is still a fragile baby like she was but truth is, she’s much stronger than what I think she is – physically, mentally and emotionally. I have gone through so much with her and watched how much she suffered during her baby days.  I really don’t wish to see her suffer anymore pain and I want no more hospitalization stays with her again, ever.

To give me a peace of mind on CoCo days, I pack a pouch of hydrogen water into Cass’ lunch bag on CoCo days. Since she doesn’t want me to drop by in school so often now, I let her bring the pouch of hydrogen water to school herself. I used to drop by in school to check on her 1-3 times in a week, gave her the hydrogen water, made sure that she peed and chatted with her teachers and friends. But lately, she kept telling me that the principal does not encourage visiting parents in school except if the child is unwell. Oh well. I guess I just have to learn to let go and let Cass grow up *crying a river*

Cass will grow up well, I know she will.

How Safe Is Your Family In Your Own Hands?

Nothing matters more to me in this world than the health and safety of my family members. I’d do anything to keep my family members in the pinkest of health. Some of the things that I do now to keep my children healthy is to give them a good brand of health supplements and ensure that they have healthy meals. I try to go organic as much as I can. I also buy toiletries and household cleaners that contain no harsh chemicals as much as I can.

I am fortunate that I stay in a place where I can buy organic food and other healthy food stuff conveniently.  From time to time, I have  blog readers emailing me to ask me where I get my organic food stuff as their location makes it very difficult for them to get hold of such items.

For those of you who have been desiring to purchase healthy food stuff, organic food, healthy personal care products and supplements but have no easy access to them, you can now shop for these items online at Green Wellness.

Green Wellness is an online retailer that focuses on healthy groceries and preventive healthcare products through distribution of toxic-free and chemical-free premium products sourced from all over the world, conveniently delivered to your door step.

What I like about Green Wellness is that they carry an impressive panoply of healthy products. I could find organic spirulina capsules, organic oat noodles, organic sauerkraut,  healthy snacks for my girls  and much more interesting healthy items.

I have already placed an online order for some healthy food items and can’t wait to receive them soon!

Easter Sunday – 16 April 2017

I almost wanted to skip church on Easter Sunday today as Drama Queen has to sit for an exam that starts tomorrow for a week. I wanted her to stay home to do revision as she’s not been revising much lately. I knew that after church we would be out for lunch and  shopping and by the time we reach home, it would be 4-ish pm already. With the usual diddle daddle, by the time she gets to sit down to revise, it would be after dinner, at 8-ish pm already.  But Drama Queen reassured me that she would not dawdle today and would study really hard when we’re back from church.

Fine. We’ll see…

So off we went to church this morning.

Cass and her Sunday School friends sang at the Chinese service. I left the English service for 15 minutes to watch her sing and then continued to listen to the sermon in English. After service, there was a treat of pau for all the parishioners. The girls received a takeout pan pizza each from Sunday School along with other goodies.

Lunch was at Macaroni Cafe.  The hubs ordered pizza. Yeah, more pizza for the girls and they were cheering to no end to more pizzas for today.

Margherita pizza for the girls and yummy grilled chicken cajun salad for yours truly.

And there’re more pizzas! A trio pizza composed of smoked salmon, prawn pesto (yums to this!) and salami.

After a carbs loaded lunch and grocery shopping, we were finally home for some quiet time for Drama Queen and Cass to revise.  Cass will be sitting for her first exam for this year next week. Here’s to a massively stressed out weekend for me this week!  As if coaching 2 rascals for an exam is not enough, I have to be up at 5am on a Sunday to get Alycia ready for a marathon…on a Sunday, what the fun!!

While the two younger girls did their revision, the big girl kept belting out and dancing to Bruno Mar’s new hit, “That’s What I Like”.  This catchy song is now stuck in my head and I can’t seem to get it out  😍

My Wednesday – 12 April 2017

Today is CoCo day in school. I left the house for school at 9:30 am to bring lunch (homecooked spaghetti bolognese) for Cass and Drama Queen.  After I left the school, I picked up the hubs from his office and off we went for our ‘week day dating’.  Hubs and I, we try to have breakfast or lunch together several times in a week sans the kids.

Today we went to Charlie’s Cafe. He ordered Sarawak Laksa and I ordered a small portion of fried vermicelli with curry vegetables and a slice of fried Thai style mackeral fish. Hubs also ordered 3 pieces of Musang King durian cheese tart which was so durianlicious!

I was already very full after my second breakfast. I had an early breakfast at home of homemade toast before leaving for school. But the hubs was craving for Portugese egg tart and a cuppa latte from Red Kettle. So we segued into Red Kettle from Charlie’s Cafe, which was just a few steps away. Though I was so stuffed that my tummy could touch my boops when I sat down (HAHA!), I could still polish off half the Portugese egg tart. It’s really the bomb. It’s SO, SO divine – the filling is so creamy and milky and the pastry is so fluffy and buttery. It’s the best Portugese egg tart in the world. I love everything from Red Kettle.  I love their lemon polenta cake and their range of gourmet breads.

After a super heavy brunch, we stopped at the car workshop to have my car’s central locking system fixed. Waiting for an hour for my car under the zinc roof made me sweat buckets. After fixing my car, I stopped by a fruit stall by the roadside to buy fruits, which made me sweat even more!  When I reached home, I had another shower from head to toe.  These days, the weather during the day has been sweltering and in the evening, it would pour cats and dogs. I have been taking 3-4 showers a day for the past week.

Today the mil has a dinner appointment with some relatives, so dinner was mine to settle. But thankfully the hubs sent me food from his kitchen. I am so lucky I don’t have to cook! I hate cooking when the weather is hot. I hate cooking when there is no momentum. After having the mil around for  3 months, I have lost the momentum and mojo to cook.

We had some glorious curry dishes for dinner cooked by hubs’ chef: sambal prawn with petai, assam fish, beef rendang, nasi hujan panas (colorful rice cooked with spices or Rainbow Rice) and Nyonya kuih. The portions were really big and I stashed some away in the freezer. We are going to eat the same stuff again tomorrow 😀

Cassandra’s 9th Birthday & New Piano Teacher

My baby girl turned 9 on 9 April 2017.  It was a Sunday. She attended Sunday School in the morning, which she looks forward to every Sunday. After church we had lunch at a Japanese restaurant. Type of cuisine was her choice and Japanese is her favorite cuisine.

Cass ordered cold buckwheat noodles, which comes with her favorite Chawan Mushi (‘favoritest’ of all food), Unagi and Miso soup.

The Japanese restaurant manager gave Cass a birthday gift, which was a complimentary dessert of her choice.

Cass chose Matcha ice-cream with mochi and red bean.

After lunch at Kimiya, we segued into Inside Scoop Ice Cream (located just steps away) to get 3 scoops of licklicious Cempedak ice-cream, then segued into a cafe next door to have cakes and coffee.  We had another round of cake-cutting for Cass.  On the eve of her birthday the night before, we had a round of cake-cutting with all her grand aunts and grand uncles.

With daddy dearest…

On the eve of Cass’ birthday, we finally met Cass’ new piano teacher, Crystal. Thank God Cass was at such ease with teacher Crystal. This is because teacher Crystal has very similar mannerism and persona as teacher Katelyn, Cass’ first piano teacher whom she misses very much.  Teacher Crystal is a music graduate from the University of Malaya and is pretty good with kids. I hope Cass’ love for piano will continue to flourish and she will pick up all the good techniques right off the bat under the guidance of teacher Crystal.

Happiest birthday my dear baby girl Cassandra. May God continue to bless you with good health, healing and overflowing of happiness every day of your life.

Should I See a Primary Care Physician or Go to an Urgent Care Clinic?

Primary care physicians and urgent care clinics can both offer quality medical services, but there are times you have to make tough choices on which is the best method of receiving treatment at the time. Below are a few of the specifics to consider before making the choice.

Sense of Urgency
The choice between seeing a primary care physician and urgent care clinic doctor might seem hard at times, but the trick is to understand the urgency of the situation. If you are experiencing a medical problem that will make it difficult to wait for the doctor to squeeze you in, this is the best time to visit an urgent care clinic. You do not want to sitting around a doctor’s office waiting for an appointment if you are needing stitches, or are in a lot of pain.

Health Problems That Are After Hours
Medical problems can crop up at any time of the day or night. Seeing a primary care physician tends to be a little cheaper and may be covered by insurance, but they also have limited hours. You will often not have much choice in whether to seek medical help from an urgent care clinic if it is late in the day. An urgent care clinic is still a more affordable option to a traditional emergency room.

When Your Primary Care Doctor Has No Openings
Most physicians try to leave some openings in their appointment book to squeeze in emergency, or unexpected visits. There are days that this is not possible, especially during times that areas are being hit hard with colds and flu. This makes a visit to an urgent care clinic the sensible choice.

The Difference Between Chronic and Urgent Conditions
A sprained ankle or pulled muscle is a medical condition that might require urgent attention. Conditions like Multiple Sclerosis and diabetes are long-term chronic conditions that would be better looked after by a regular primary care physician. The medical team at a primary care physicians office will take the time to get to know you, your condition and monitor progress. It is more difficult for an urgent care team to offer this same level of chronic patient care. It is also usually cost prohibitive for those with chronic conditions to seek regular treatment at an urgent care clinic.

Get quality immediate medical services at an urgent care emergency room Spring TX like Cypress Creek ER.

Home-Cooked Food For School

Drama Queen likes bringing home cooked food to school. This year, she has to stay back in school every day for UPSR exam preparation classes. When there are extra dishes and rice from dinner, she will keep them in the fridge. The next morning, she will wake up 5 minutes earlier to reheat the food to bring to school. When she’s in the mood, she will cook something up in the evening, for school the next day.

Below is the turmeric fried rice that she cooked on her own without any help form us adults.  The ground turmeric oil is from the turmeric chicken that we had for dinner. As there was quite a bit of ground turmeric and shallot oil left on the platter, she used the oil to fry some rice, along with some chopped carrots, long beans and 2 eggs.  The fried rice was not only aromatic and yummy, it’s very healthy too.  The fried rice was enough for her and Cass to bring to school.

Ting Xie (Chinese Spelling)

Last night, Cass was in the mood to study for her Ting Xie (Chinese spelling) for today. If I don’t ask, this girl will not study but lately, she’s been pretty good, thanks to the in-house timetable that we have both agreed on.

She wrote the 8 words for Ting Xie on a tiny piece of paper measuring about 3.5 x 3.5cm and wrote the Chinese words with Han Yu Pin Yin so tiny that I could barely read them.

Cass – mummy, please test me on my ting xie. This is the paper.

Me – hello, I can’t read the words. They are SO small!

* Cass then sauntered to Alycia’s room and fetched the magnifying glass *

Cass – here’s the magnifying glass. Quick test me.

After testing her on the words…

Cass – mum, I am in high spirits today. I think I can score 100% for my Ting Xie tomorrow! 💪

And yes she did score a 100% for her Ting Xie today. She’s so happy 🙂

Exam Season Is Here Again

The dreaded exam season is here again!  This time, I am attempting to go green.  To save papers and printer cartridge, I am cutting down on the printing of test papers.  Instead, Cass goes to the website where the test papers are accessible and writes down her answers on a piece of recycled paper where  I will then refer to the website to mark.

Here, Cass is working on a BM test paper. She’s wearing an anti-blue light glasses which I bought from the Naturally Plus office. It’s mine and she always steals it from me whenever she uses the laptop and handphone.  I am going to get  three more pairs of this eye glasses for the girls soon.

The fact that blue light penetrates all the way to the retina (the inner lining of the back of the eye) is important, because laboratory studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. Added blue light exposure from computer screens, smartphones and other digital devices might increase a person’s risk of macular degeneration later in life.

Our girls also pop 1-2 capsules of Super Lutein a day to protect their eye health and overall health. Let me know if you are interested in Super Lutein as I can help you to order it.
