No More Excuses! Get Fit Without Joining A Gym!

Many of us think that fitness depends on our ability to own a gym membership. If you don’t join a gym, you can’t get fit, right? Wrong, there are so many ways to get fit without joining a gym. And, I’ve listed some of the most genius ideas down below:

Start Running
Running is an excellent way to stay fit, which is why you see so many runners everywhere! The great thing about it is that you get to go outside. You can run, and feel the fresh air in your lungs as you do it. Plus, it;s something you can do at any time of day. Early morning before work, or late at night before bed. There’s really no excuse, apart from when the weather’s bad. And, even then, some waterproof running gear is all you need. My biggest tip is to buy proper running trainers. This is because you need the right support when you run. Otherwise, it can be damaging to your joints.

Create A Home Gym
One of the main reasons people think they need a gym membership is because of the equipment there. But, there’s an easy way to work around this and save a load of money. You can create a gym in your home with ease. Especially if you have a spare room or garage that isn’t used as much as it could be. These are the perfect places to set everything up. All you need is the best home gym equipment for fitness workouts. I’m willing to bet you won’t use every machine in the gym, so, you’re wasting money. Most people will only need five machines maximum to get a good workout in. Things like treadmills, bikes, etc. Get some weights as well, and you’ll be sorted for all types of exercise. It may cost a lot to start with, but, you’ll save so much over time. Plus, you have more motivation as your gym is right by you at all times. No excuses, just go to your home gym and get fit.

Play Outside With Your Kids
Believe it or not, but playing with your kids can get you fit. I know, it sounds funny, but it’s true. Anyone with kids will back me up here and tell you all about it. Head outside to a park and play with your children. You’ll find it difficult to keep up with their endless energy. They’ll get you running around and joining in with their crazy games. Before you know it, you’ve worked up a heavy sweat! The great thing about kids is that they love playing sports too. No doubt your children will always ask you to go into the garden and play with them. Kick a soccer ball around with your kids a few times a week, and you can get fit.

Of course, you should combine these ideas with a healthy diet. There are plenty of fitness-friendly food ideas for you to enjoy. Regular exercise, combined with a balanced diet will get you fit in no time!

Smart TV Lessons From Drama Queen

Can you believe that ever since the hubs replaced our old TV with a WiFi-enabled smart TV one year ago, I still do not know how to turn it on? HA HA HA!  Unbelievable right?

Truth is, I have NO TIME to watch the TV.

Am I the only work-from-home-mum of 3 kids who is so outdated and still living in a world of dinosaur TVs? Tell me I am not the only one, tell me!! I feel dumb ya know.

Last week, Drama Queen had to give me a short tutorial on how to operate the smart TV but know what? Half way through it, I was interrupted by work again and by the time I was done replying my customer, I looked at the clock and dang it, it was time to cook dinner already!  So yeah, I still do NOT know how to switch on the frigging damn smart, smart TV!!

How many of you here is just like me and still don’t know how to operate the smart TV? Raise up your hand!! 😀

Awal Muharram Holiday – 3 Oct 2016

One of the best things to happen on a weekday is to have Monday off – off goes all our Monday blues 🙂  And we had just that yesterday. It was such a LUXURY to sleep in on a Monday morning of a school-going week. Total bliss.

We spent our holiday at Avenue K. It’s been more than half a year since we last visited Avenue K.  The one restaurant that we craved to eat at was Tokyo-based Bankara Ramen.

Bankara Ramen serves one of the tastiest ramen in town. If you have tried their pork-infused creamy and luscious broth that comes with each bowl of ramen, you wouldn’t want to have ramen anywhere else.

Check out the spoonful of spicy bean paste chilli. It was so spicy that we wouldn’t eat it but when hubs told us that it costs a frigging RM2 (or maybe RM2.50) as add-on, Drama Queen quickly poured some onto her noodles.

If you are not into ramen, try their Oyakodon, soul food of steamed rice with succulent chicken, soft-boiled egg and shredded seaweed.

Ramen (volcano) egg and Onsen egg.

Deep fried baby fish.

As we walked out of Bankara Ramen, we saw the newly opened Hokkaido Cheese Tart stall at the concourse.  Being the foodie that he is, hubs wanted to try this much raved about baked cheese tart from Hokkaido.

The baked cheese tart craze started in Hokkaido, Japan, took over the country and eventually invaded Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore, before making its way to Malaysia.  The mousse centre is made with a blend of three different types of cream cheese, piped into a crunchy shortcrust pastry base. To ensure freshness and perfection, each tart is baked fresh daily at the outlet.   With a crumbly exterior and warm, soft, meltingly cheesy filling, it is no wonder this treat has taken the world by storm.

Each tart goes for RM5.80, and there is a six-for-RM29 promotion going on currently.

So are the cheese tarts really worth a whopping RM5.80 each? If you are a cheese and tart fan, then it is absolutely worth the price. I would give it a 5-star rating for taste and quality. I ate one this morning right out of the fridge and the tart still tasted heavenly.

A few steps away from the Hokkaido Cheese Tart stall were some token-operated kiddie rides. Guess who wanted to ride on it (without buying the tokens of course)? Hahahaha! I guess the big girl missed being a kiddo again.  Once upon a time, she used to love riding them.  I remember hubs and I once collected so many one Ringgit and fifty sen coins just so we could use them for such rides during the weekends.

While I brought the girls shopping, the hubs went for a Thai massage to kill time.  We went to H&M and were pleasantly surprised that there was a sale going on. Lucky us as we managed to grab some real good deals. We also popped by Popular Book Store and Daiso before meeting hubs at Franco Japanese French restaurant for a very early dinner at 4pm!

While waiting for our food to arrive, we sampled the Hokkaido cheese tarts. They were SO good I think I walloped 2 tarts! Drama Queen whacked a tall glass of matcha ice-cream milk shake. Gawd, I would have puked had I put this entire cup of creamy milk shake into my tummy.

Hubs ordered a squid ink rice with mushrooms, squids and omelette which was really rich and delish.

Ham, cheese and egg on a super thick slice of toast.

Warm and soft chocolate pudding.

After stuffing myself with so much rich food, I felt really cloy and had the familiar overeating stomach discomfort. For someone who eats very little food each day, my stomach had a hard time digesting so much high calorie food.  But I think I burnt off all the calories  by this morning. Before I plonked myself onto  bed last night, I did 80 bicycle crunches on the bed. This morning I brisked walked for 40 minutes and back home, after downing a packet of Izumio, continued with a few sets of Swiss Ball crunches on my fitball.

My Sunday – 2 Oct 2016 (Stung By Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen Song!)

Hubs had worked late the previous night, thus wasn’t in the bubbly mood to bring us out of the neighborhood to join him in his Sunday “jalan-jalan cari makan” spin.

Instead, we had Japanese at the restaurant at our condo.

After lunch, we dropped off the big girl at the hair salon for her monthly hair cut while I went to get some groceries. She’s been pestering me since 2 weeks ago for a hair cut coz she was worried that she would be the next random’victim’ to get her hair cut by the disciplinary teacher in school.

Back home, the girls and I just couldn’t stop watching music videos of Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen or PPAP on You Tube.  When I watched the video for the first time two days ago, I thought it was the stupidest music video ever!  And I could not comprehend how this video has become an instant internet sensation with over 16 million views on You Tube. It has also become Justin Bieber’s favorite video on the internet.  The video does not make sense at all. The lyrics are: “I have a pen. I have an apple. Apple-pen! I have a pen. I have [a] pineapple. Pineapple-pen! Apple-pen. Pineapple-pen. Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen.” Uh Uh.   Piko Taro, a character created by Kosaka, is seen dancing in the clip, wearing an animal print outfit.

But you know what? Stupid and nonsensical as it is, the more I watch this music video, the more I love it.  There’s not a single time that I wouldn’t laugh till I tear watching this “brainwash song”.  The girls commented that their mummy is also bitten by the PPAP song HA HA HA HA!

Go have a watch too. Betcha you’ll be bitten by the PPAP bug too!!

Bribing My Kids

Today I bribed the small brat.  Cute as a button and can melt my heart when she is in her angelic mode, this brat can be a little monster when she is switched to devilish mode, spewing out the molten lava from my within through my nose, mouth, ears and all outlets in my body.

Though she is doing pretty well in her studies in school, she has an ‘attitude problem’, which is driving me NUTS!   Something must have happened between her and her tutor and she started to dislike her Mandarin tutor recently.  The brat will act up each time the tutor comes and this is DRIVING ME INSANE!  Now, this Mandarin tutor is the nicest teacher I have met. Alycia loves this tutor and got along with her really well throughout the 5 years that she tutored Alycia.   Cass and the tutor started off with a very cordial and chummy relationship since the beginning of time.  Cass was about 5 years old when she joined her 2 sisters during Mandarin enrichment classes.  When her syllabus got tougher as she progressed from pre-school to Primary 2, naturally the tutor had to increase the homework load.  Coming from a family consisting of yellow banana parents, our girls are gravitated towards English. They speak in English at home, watch TV shows, listen to English songs and prefer reading English books. With so much influences from pop stars from the West, they are pretty much ‘westernized’.

It was the hubster’s idea of sending the girls to a Chinese school. I had already anticipated all the problems that would brew and crop up one by one should our girls be educated in a Chinese school and tried to change his mind 8 years ago, but the hubster stood his ground – only Chinese school. Period.

Fine then.

For a child coming from an English-speaking family with yellow banana parents, mastering the Chinese language will be tough – most of the time, as they are unable to receive much guidance from the parents. Naturally, our girls had a very tough time picking up the Chinese language since they were in pre-school. While spoken Chinese is still manageable as their grandma speaks in Mandarin with them whenever she is around, written Chinese is one of the toughest languages to master and they all struggled during the initial years.  They are still struggling with Chinese writing.  I personally find that whether a child can flourish in a Chinese school depends very much on the character of the child. Does the child possess the material to study in a Chinese school?

Alycia survived 6 years in a Chinese high prestige primary school (SBT) and breezed through it, though she had had many minor melt-downs during Mandarin tuition classes.  She had a very good tutor who would entertain answering her questions sent via Whatsapp round the clock. Yes, I am referring to the same tutor.   Alycia did not protest when her daddy was adamant in sending her to a Chinese independent high school (private).  She is doing OK now. It is too soon to comment further as she is only in Junior High One.

For Sherilyn, she has a typical ‘kwai por’ or ‘Mat Salleh’ character. When she was younger, she used to tell us “I am an English girl, not a Chinese girl!”  She would greet me “hey mum” (and she still does),  reads only English books, watches English movies and listens to English songs and tells me “I HATE CHINESE SCHOOL!!” all the time.  She even recites the times table in English though they are required to do so in Mandarin.  She would morph into another person during Mandarin tuition classes.  She gets so bored that she can snooze off during Mandarin tuition classes.  She would find ways to stall time like faffing around pretending to look for things or pretend to have urges to use the bathroom.  And now, the littlest one is just like Sherilyn during Mandarin tuition classes!!  Monkey see monkey do.  Which is why I feel SO stressed out lately whenever the Mandarin tutor comes.  On bad days, she would refuse to cooperate with the tutor. This is when corporate punishment is meted out.   I feel so harried by the two brats and I am sure the tutor feels the same.

When I run out of ideas to get the 2 brats to behave during Mandarin classes, I bribe them. I use threats and corporal punishment.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. It is easier to use bribes on the littlest brat.  Today I bribed her with something that she really likes from my online store, which is some magic clay.   And it worked. She behaved 90% well, which is a vast improvement compared to the previous class.  I know my way of dealing with these 2 brats is not ideal.  There could be some better ways.  But I do not have the time and money to find a better solution. You may suggest  finding another tutor who uses a different approach in teaching them or perhaps have a better chemistry with these 2 brats. But it is not easy to find another good tutor. I am very comfortable with the current tutor who is one of the nicest teachers around and her fees are very reasonable.  Also, I know that a child cannot be compelled to like something which she naturally dislikes. This will backfire and have serious negative consequences.  These 2 brats hate studying in a Chinese school but are compelled to.

I can’t rant out to the hubs for he will comment that I am harping on the same string again and again. And I can anticipate his replies to me.  He is by nature a very happy-go-lucky person and does not place high expectations on academic achievements on his girls.  He’ll be satisfied with mediocre marks and positions while I am the total opposite.

OK, enough of ranting.  I just have to accept the ebb and flow of life of a mother with 3 head strong kids.  My motherly instinct tells me that they will turn out well in future.  And just like Lukas Graham sings – my mama said that it was OK.  Mama said that it was quite alright.

My mama always tells me to let it go and chill… she was not pushy on my studies when I was young (and she was a teacher) and I still turned out fine now 🙂
