Hubby’s Birthday – 30 December 2015

Pix taken over dinner today at Koyaku Japanese Restaurant, to celebrate the man’s 44th birthday 🙂

The ume and strawberries steeped in alcohol in big transparent jars lining up the bar caught my attention. I casually mentioned to the hubby that I love drinking Umeshu and before I knew it, he ordered a glass for me. Half a small glass cost RM25!

The pictures are a tad yellowish and blur caused by the dim lightning at the restaurant.

Below – my light dinner today, after a week of meat-heavy meals.

Teppan salmon and a small glass of Umeshu on the rocks, shared with the hubby.

Below – Cass waiting impatiently for the food to arrive.

Below – veggie teppan and an assortment of sushi.

Below – tempura prawns for the birthday man, shared with his angels.

Below – super sized chawan mushi @ RM12 a big bowl. It comes with a medium-sized prawn, mini abalone, chicken slices and mushrooms. Very yummy!  And the drama queen sucking on sour lemon *face palm*!  LOL!!

Happy New Year’s Eve to all my dear readers! 🙂

It’s 12:20am now but I am still wide awake! But I’m going to drag my arse to the bed now. Gotta wake up early to go to JPN to get the big girl’s My Kad application done.  Nite nite world 🙂

Boxing Day – 26 December 2015

We had visitors at our place on Boxing Day!

My parents, brother, SIL and niece from Singapore came for a short 3-day 2-night stay. Our girls were so happy to see them again.

My dad got loads of hugs from Cass and Raelyn. One calls him ‘koong koong’ and the other calls him ‘yeh yeh’.

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling

The 2 cousins love to hug dad 🙂

We had dinner at our favorite neighborhood restaurant.

Hubby ordered my favorite roast chicken. This restaurant dishes out one of the best roast chicken, char siew and siew yoke in the world. I kid you not.  The roast chicken comes with super crispy skin with a moist and toothsome interior, in every bite.  I even doggy-bagged all the breast meat, which I will use to cook fried rice or pasta.

Below – sweet and sour pork (the girls’ favorite dish. I would say almost all kids love this tangy and appetizing dish) and steamed fish.

Below – pan-fried aromatic soy sauce prawns.  There were also 2 plates of veggies with no pictures taken of.

After dinner, we headed to Pavillion to see the vibrant X’mas decor.  The entire mall was swarmed with people of all ages, races and smell!  For a moment, it felt like we were at the busy shopping area of Causeway Bay, Hong Kong on a weekend night just 2 weeks earlier. The sea of people was intimidating and we just could not relax as we were all very wary of our handbags.

We quickly did some camwhoring with the Xmas decor…

Cass and Raelyn – the 2 bffs. Though 4 years in age gap, they are nonetheless at the same wavelength and the two can really chatter and play till the cows come home. From morning till way past midnight, they are still yakking and playing and I would be drop dead conked out on the bed. We’ve been sleeping past 1 am the past few nights.

Big Brother’s Birthday and Dong Zhi Dinner at Kok Thai Restaurant, Ipoh

We had big brother Ray’s birthday dinner cum Dong Zhi dinner at Restoran Kok Thai @ Ipoh Garden East on 22 December 2015.

Kok Thai is our most favored restaurant in good old Ipoh.  It’s just a stone’s throw away from my parents and the food is cheap, pretty, awesome (translated from Cantonese, i.e. pang leng cheng to English) ha!  Since aeons ago, we’ve had almost all our celebrations held at this restaurant.

Here’s the poof of my claim on how awesome the food is from Kok Thai. We ordered these dishes that night. Looking back at these pix now is already making my tummy growl. I’ve got to wait for another 3-4 hours before I can tuck into a nice BBQ X’mas Eve dinner, prepared by the hubby at the girls’ grand uncle’s house.

Below: 5-dish platter, which is my absolute favorite. Of all the 4 or 5 platter dishes that I had sampled, Kok Thai’s multi-dish platter is still the best, in terms of choice, taste and most importantly, price.  I just love the mock sharks fins omelette – it’s the tastiest ever!

Close-up of the yummy dishes for you to drool…

Second dish that came was deboned ‘loong tan’ fish (king grouper) steamed with Ipoh chee cheong fun. This is the restaurant’s new creation and I gotta say that the combination was per-fish! The fish was perfectly executed – texture was smooth and not tough. There wasn’t any tinge of fishy odor. The chee cheong fun texture was super smooth too. And the sauce was out of this world. I must  find the secret to making such lip-smacking fish sauce for my own home-cooked steamed fish! I never like to venture into steaming fish at home coz I can never seem to get rid of the fishy odor from the fish and coming up with the perfect sauce that goes with the fish.

Below: loh hon jai (vegetarian dish) and mutton in hot pot. YUMS!!

Below:  Kok Thai’s signature longevity noodles with shredded chicken, mushrooms and uncut kau choi (chives is called kau choi in Cantonese. It is an auspicious dish which signifies everlasting and longevity)

Dessert was mar thai kang (water chestnut sweet soup with gingko)

Ipoh is no doubt a food haven for foodies, next to Penang and Hong Kong. I am already missing these 3 places now that I am back in KL.   KL has the tastiest char-grilled char siew, siew yoke and pork noodles in the world, right smack in my neighborhood, which are even yummier than the char siew and siew yoke that I had tasted in New Zealand and Hong Kong. And I have already satiated my craving for them today for brunch 😀

Treating Sore Throat, Cough And Phlegm Naturally

When we were in Hong Kong, we had really rich and ‘heaty’ food almost daily. On the second night in Hong Kong, the adults went for a snake meal, where almost every dish that was served had snake meat or other exotic meat in it.  Many people flock to eat snake meat during winter in Hong Kong.  The kids had pizza at Pizza Express.

I, for once indulged in roasted and deep fried food coz heck, I am on a holiday! I was able to relax, enjoy and indulge coz I knew I had my hydrogen water and carotenoids supplement as my ‘defense’ against sore throat.  I have an ultra sensitive throat and ‘heaty’ body, for those of you who know me will know.

We were  moving around quite a bit in Hong Kong.  When I travel, I reduce my water intake as I do not want to be hunting for clean loos hourly.  With ‘heaty’ food and insufficient water intake, my throat started to hurt  on day 3. I quickly popped an extra capsule of carotenoids supplement and an extra packet of  hydrogen water and gargled my throat with sea salt water. The next day, the sore throat was gone!

All my effort and trouble in lugging one whole box of Iz**** (about 7.5kg) to Hong Kong was worth it. The products managed to keep the kids and me in tip top health. The kids ate all their ‘happy holiday food’ from fries to pizza, candies, gum, chips, hot dogs (shudder!) chocolates and burgers everyday. They did not drink as much water as they should (which is 6-8 glasses daily), skipped their daily dose of fresh fruits and smoothies yet they survived without falling ill. But I ensured that they took their daily dose of carotenoids supplement (only 1 capsule each for Alycia and Sherilyn) and hydrogen water (Cass and I took 1.5 – 2 packets daily and the 2 older gals shared a packet each day).

My hydrogen water and carotenoids supplement have indeed given me my peace of mind, wherever I may be.

Here is another testimonial from one of our team members on how hydrogen water has helped her daughter recover from cough and phlegm:

“Morning, today I’m going to share how Iz**** helped  my girl  who has cough. She has been having flu and cough for about one and half months. Everyday can hear thick phlegm sound at her throat and lot of mucus too. All greenish color. Since I tried Iz**** for my eczema, I also give 2 packs to her day and night. (2 packs – she can only finish abt 80%). After one week, she suddenly poo poo in the middle of the night. Then continued two times next morning. Its greenish sticky stool. She poo out all the phlegm. After that no more coughing for her until now. Yes, she recovered from cough!!!”

As a parent, I’ll do anything and spend any amount on a good supplement if it can treat my children from their ailments without medication.  If you’d like to find out more on the health supplements that I am talking about, do drop me an email at shireenyong@gmail.com.

Winter Solstice and Early X’mas Celebration In Ipoh – 21 & 22 December 2015

We went shopping for X’mas pressies on 21 December 2015 in Ipoh. Also got our girls their extra pairs of school shoes. Now, I’m going to have a problem lugging the bulky shoes back to KL tomorrow as we are taking the ETS (electric train service) without the hubs around to help me. I’m going to get the girls to carry their own shoes since they reassured me that they will lug them back to KL!

22 December 2015…

My brother, SIL and niece from Singapore arrived in Ipoh by plane.  After picking them up from the airport, we went to a nearby coffee shop for Ipoh hawkers’ fare.

Back home, we had an early X’mas celebration and birthday cake cutting ceremony for my brother, Raymond.

We’re off to a Chinese restaurant for a scrumptious family reunion dinner. For the Chinese, the Winter Solstice festival is more important than the Lunar New Year. Here’s a little history on why this is so…. During the Han Dynasty, the Chinese believed that after the solstice, days became longer and so did positive yang energy. Emperors and commoners alike would spend the day offering to the heaven and to deceased relatives. Today, many of the traditions continue.

I’d like to wish all my Chinese readers a very happy Dong Zhi festival 🙂

Our Sunday In Ipoh – 20 December 2015

Today is chillaxing day at home for the kids and me, while my dear papa and mum are slogging in the kitchen to prepare all our favorite food.

Papa has been working in the kitchen doing all the prep for tonight’s  home-cooked dishes while mum has been prepping the black sesame paste, peanut paste, pandan juice and dough for tang yuan (rice balls) for Winter Solstice celebration on 22 December.

Cass is self-entertaining herself on mum’s indoor exercise bicycle and playing pretend cooking. She ‘dished’ out her self-titled “RM2,000 emperor lunch set” for me for lunch.  Sherilyn is messing up with my mobile phone and laptop!

Guess what Cass called the dish on the empty yellow plate?  It’s an “invisible grilled squid” since there wasn’t any toy squid at home. She knows that I love grilled flying squid from our favorite Japanese restaurant.

Above – I got a pleasant surprise when I went into my bedroom.  I saw Alycia donning on my 2-decade old singlet, which she fished out somewhere deep inside my untouched drawer!  My just-turned 12YO sweetie has grown so  much.  She was on her iPod and new headphone from HK  and in her own pre-teen world chatting with her friends and You Tubing.

Happy Sunday world, with love from the Pomelo Land! 🙂

Back In Ipoh

After a horrendous bumper-to-bumper crawl on almost the entire stretch of highway on the Perak side, we arrived Ipoh 3 hours+ later. It would normally only take 2 hours by car to reach Ipoh.  My bladder almost exploded and I had a massive tummy ache from an overly expanded bladder and a growling tummy, OUCH!

No automatic alt text available.

After a quick lunch at home, I rushed to my childhood friend, Jo’s house to have a brief reunion with my former classmates. We have known each other for over 3 decades, some since we were just a few years old.

Living in 4 different countries now (Singapore, Australia, Malaysia and USA), it’s a rare occasion for  us to have this precious reunion 🙂

Home-cooked Dinner – 18 December 2015

It’s fridge-clearing day every Friday and here’s what I dished out today…

No automatic alt text available.

ABC soup – Sakura chicken (breast and drumsticks) with carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, lots of onions, pepper corn and sweet corns.

Sauteed organic brinjal with ‘tau cheong’ sauce, minced meat, tomato and organic ‘lai park’ veggie.  Used a little ABC soup to give this dish a little sauce.

Sweet corn rice.

This could be the last meal that I cook for this year. We’ll be back to the land of pomelos and crunchy fat bean sprouts tomorrow and will return to KL  next week!

For the first time in more than a decade, we’ll get to celebrate my elder brother’s birthday together on Winter Solstice Day. The girls will get to roll ‘tong yuen’ (rice balls) again. The last time we did that in Ipoh was 3 years ago. As well, we’ll get to celebrate my niece’s birthday a day before her papa’s birthday on 21st Dec. Back in KL, we’ll be celebrating the hubby’s birthday on 30th Dec.

December is a month lined up with birthday celebrations of loved ones with lots of over-indulgence in good food and merriment. It’s also a month that I lax on my exercise regime. But worry not I am, come Jan 2016, I am very sure that I will be stressed out with 3 kids starting school again. When the kids have school, my exercise regime is orderly.  And my zombified days will begin again come 4 Jan 2016 🙁

I have mixed feelings on school starting again. I’m happy that I am ‘forced’ to swim again at 6:30am every day and have my me time in the morning, yet I shudder at the thought of not getting 7-8 hours again. It’s tough to get by each day with only 4-5 hours of sleep. It’s gonna be worse next year as Alycia has to attend full day school even on Saturdays, which means I lose out on sleep even on Saturdays! 🙁

Well, I think I am going to make a New Year Resolution. It’s a tough one. And that’s to force myself to hit the bed by 10pm every night so that I get 6.5 hours of sleep each day. I know life is going to be really mundane like that by oh well, I have to sacrifice something in order to gain something more important. I’ll be fine 🙂  Happy weekend world!

Hong Kong Trip – Day 3 (8 December 2015)

We went to Ocean Park today. The last time I was there was in 1994, with my mum during our Hong Kong and Bangkok tour together. WOW, 21 years ago!  Boy,  have I aged and how did time pass by so quickly??!

No automatic alt text available.

Though it is my second visit to Ocean Park, I enjoyed myself thoroughly with the kids. I saw some newbies in the park – like this enchanting train (pic below) that brought us to the other side from the entrance of Ocean Park.

And this Flash Ride (Thrill Mountain) – as you can see from the pic below, this ride spins you up to 22 metres into the air, rotated 360 degrees by a robot arm.  It is recommended for those who love adrenaline rush.  Alycia and Sherilyn are both suckers for crazy rides like this. Yup, they went up this ride, the roller coaster as well as all all those tummy churning, neck-breaking rides.

No automatic alt text available.

Alycia and Sherilyn wanted to go up the Abyss Turbo Drop (pic below – the twin tower thingy) but hubs and I said NO!! From 20 floors above ground level, you will drop, in a clean, vertical free fall, gawd!

 - Ocean Park

Alycia and Sherilyn went up this ride too…

Cass was in a real foul mood at Ocean Park coz she did not meet all the requirements for the rides – below 12YO and below height requirement. Poor baby girl. See her droopy lips and sulky face above? I had to bribe her to take that picture with me!

But we managed to sneak her into the white water rafting ride, yipee!  Though we rented rain coats (freaking expensive!), we got wet too!

Above – kids after the white water rafting ride.

Below – to the aquatic to watch the sea lions and dolphins in action. It was by far the most interesting event at Ocean Park. The sea lions and dolphins are so clever!

No automatic alt text available.

The kids munched on grilled chicken thighs and lots of pop corns!

Image may contain: 1 person

Hot dogs, fries and pizza for lunch…

Hubs had to cheer up Cass coz she didn’t get to go up on any of the rides that her sisters and cousins went, except for the white water rafting. And she got hit by a toy gun in the eye when it rebounded. She was in tears and I got a heart stopping moment!

We took the cable car back to the main entrance of Ocean Park and then took a cab home.

The ride on the cable ride was exhilarating and it was during this ride that I found out that the hubs has acrophobia (fear of heights) haha!!

Have You Bought School Shoes For Your Children Yet?

Parents, the school holidays are coming to an end soon.  Have you started shopping for your children’s back-to-school paraphernalia? This time, your’s truly is very efficient and quick.  School uniforms and school shoes were already bought even before the school holidays started, thanks to the advent of online shopping!

If you have not bought school shoes for your children yet, fret not. Stay calm and don’t panic! You do not have to brave the crowd at the shopping mall with your children tagging along. You can order their school shoes online at the Pallas Online Store.

See, our girls are showing off their new Pallas school shoes!  Alycia is all set to attend the orientation at her high school tomorrow!

And monkeying around too…

Ms Drama Queen even donned on Alycia’s new high school uniform just for the fun of it. Omaigod, both of them look like teenagers though Alycia has just only turned 12 and Ms Drama Queen is not even 11 yet!

The girls commented that their Pallas school shoes are very comfortable, thanks to the spongy foam on the interior of the shoes. There is also a mesh design on the exterior of the shoes for good ventilation.

For those of you who have children with flat feet, some of the Pallas school shoes models are designed with a corrective insole and molded to provide support for the natural arch of the foot.  The shoes provide optimum comfort for the flat feet, weak or fallen longitunidal arches.  The shoes relieve strain on the foot muscles while your child walks and runs.

Pallas school shoes are specially designed with corrective insoles for children with flat feet.

Above: school shoes with arch support insole.

Pallas school shoes are priced very affordably, ranging from RM27.99 to not more than RM45.00 a pair.

Check out the wide range of school shoes at the Pallas online store. They also have funky and colorful sneakers, which are very affordable as well. I think I am going to get our girls some new sneakers too!

Humble Food Again

After a week of super rich food indulgence in Hong Kong, it’s time to start eating ‘humble’ food again 😀

My tummy and innards cannot stomach such meat-intense and high caloric  meals everyday. While we were in Hong Kong, we had a snake meal on the second day, where almost every dish that was served had snake meat in it. And not forgetting the roast goose, crabs, beef, sharks’ fins, roast pigeon, fattening ‘por lor’ bun, egg tarts, dim sum, seafood and sweet deserts that we indulged in almost everyday.

Here’s what I had for lunch today…

No automatic alt text available.

A slice of bran and wheat bread with a drizzle of organic extra virgin coconut oil and maple syrup.  I didn’t know that coconut oil on bread would taste so good! It reminds me of the sweet coconut buns from my favorite bakery.  And there was not a tinge of rancid coconut taste from the coconut oil. Instead the coconut oil was very flavorful.

Homemade smoothie of the day is pineapple + green apple + orange.

Tonight, I will be dishing up a meat-free stir-fried vermicelli with 2 types of fresh mushrooms, carrots, cabbage and lots of onions and garlic 🙂

Hong Kong Trip 5th Day – 10 December 2015

Today, all the girls attended a baking class, courtesy from eldest SIL.

Alycia followed her uncles and cousin, Lucas for a hike up Victoria’s Peak.

While everyone was busy in the midst of their activities, the hubby and I walked the streets of Wan Chai, in search of all the yummy food in Hong Kong. Yup, that’s the hubby’s passion 🙂

We stopped by at Kam’s Roast Goose, the world renowned roast goose specialist, after asking around for directions to the restaurant and using Google Maps.

We were 3rd in the queue… but waited for over half an hour for the shutters to be lifted. Check out the beeline from the facade of the restaurant at about 5 minutes before the restaurant opened its doors. Like seriously, is the food really that good?  Well, in Hong Kong, you queue up in almost every eatery.

Hong Kong Trip Pictures

Hey world, we are back to our home sweet home last night!

Flight was very bumpy and rough for a whole hour during descent as there was a thunderstorm. Thank God we landed safely, PHEW!!

But we were not lucky in getting a cab at the airport. After queuing up for over half an hour for the taxi and no sign of any taxi coming, the 5 of us had to lug our super heavy luggage back inside the airport. Hubs then bought tix for the train to KL Sentral.  Long story short, we got home 3 hours later.  And by the time I had finished washing 2 loads of dirty laundry and cleaned the house, it was only close to 1am that I managed to plonk myself onto my comfy bed. How I missed my bed! 😀

Below – our last meal in Hong Kong, at the airport and it had to be at the hubby’s favorite restaurant, Cheng Du.

Sorry for the long silence here 🙂

Been busy traipsing, shopping, eating and bonding in Hong Kong the past few days.

As I am typing this post I am queueing up for a ride with Cass at Disneyland and it is 730pm now. We arrived at Disneyland late as we were away at Lamma Island for an excursion.

It is just Cass, eldest SIL and I at Disneyland. The other kids say it is too kiddish for them ha!

Will upload all pix when we are back in KL 🙂

Dental Implants

Living with a missing tooth can be frustrating. Many people avoid smiling or laughing and spend an enormous amount of time attempting to hide their faces from the public. It is not necessary to live life with this constant distraction. Dental implants look and feel just like natural teeth and can give you a radiant and dazzling smile that you can share with the world.

What are Dental Implants

Dental implants are small prosthetic teeth that your dentist will insert into the space of a missing tooth. These implants are made from a blend of materials that will allow you to eat like normal. Implants last for a lifetime, and you never have to worry about removing or losing them. Dental implants are popular among people who want to enjoy a radiant smile, even if they have lost teeth in the past.

Who Gets Dental Implants

Dental implants are the ideal solution for anyone who wants a permanent solution to tooth loss. While there are many temporary solutions like partials and bridges, dental implants are the only way to replace your lost tooth for life. The process for getting a dental implant depends on several factors. First, you will have to have enough bone in the affected area to support the new tooth. If you do not, your dentist will have to perform a bone augmentation or graft in order to add more bone to the jaw. The dentist will perform x-rays to see the exact nature of your jaw structure, then make several casts that he will use to create the tooth. Finally, the dentist will start to create a new root for the tooth and perform the implant procedure. The typical time frame for getting a dental implant is between five and six months for most patients.

Cost of Dental Implants

The cost of dental implants can vary considerably depending on your dental needs. If you are getting multiple tooth implants, the oral surgeon can often combine procedures such as x-rays to save you money. In some cases, your insurance may cover the cost of your implants if they are medically necessary.

When it comes to enjoying a dazzling white and perfect smile, there is no better way than through cosmetic dentistry. If you are looking for dental implants in Ocala, you can find a qualified oral surgeon who can restore your smile and allow you to enjoy smiling and laughing again.

It’s Alycia’s 12th Birthday Today!

My precious baby turns 12 today!

The day I found out that the IUI fertility treatment that hubs and I went through together was a success (i.e. we conceived Alycia) and the day I first saw Alycia 12 years ago today were the happiest days in my life!

There are no celebrations lined up today as everyone is super busy running last minute errands before we fly off to Hong Kong tomorrow.  We’re going to have a nice dinner at our favorite cafe tonight though, with a cake-cutting session.

This morning, we left the house at 8:30am, with girls and 2 grandaunts in tow to get these done:

Sent my car to the Hyundai service center for service.
Went to KL Sentral to collect our train tix (for our return trip from Ipoh – KL on 23 Dec).
Went for breakfast.
Sent Sherilyn and Cass to the hair saloon to get their hair trimmed.
While waiting for us, hubs brought the rest to get groceries at the supermarket.
Collected my car from Hyundai service center.

Below: someone is very, very bumped out that daddy had to drag her to the hair salon again, hollering away for her to get down the car. Each time she gets a hair trimming session, it’s a HUGE drama ok… with more tears shed than hair!

See from the picture yourself and tell me who the hair salon drama queen is! 😀

As I am typing this post, I am taking a breather from packing.  Packing for 3 kids and for own self for a holiday to a cold country is not fun ok.

Exactly a year ago on 5 Dec 2014, Alycia and Sherilyn took a flight to Auckland, New Zealand with grandma.  Alycia’s a very, very lucky girl. How many kids below 12 years old out there gets an overseas holiday as birthday present every year eh? 😉
