During our most recent trip to Penang, we feasted on seafood at Bali Hai @ Gurney Drive again. It was our second time there. The first time was about 2 years ago and for lunch. We had an enjoyable seafood lunch but literally melted in the freaking hot weather as this restaurant is semi open air. The hot sea air blown to the restaurant in the afternoon made us all sweating profusely. This time we had dinner and felt much more comfortable as that particular night was breezy.
So many types of exotic seafood!! We wanted to try everything but that would probably cost us tens of thousands of Ringgit had we done so! I was eyeing a few tables next to ours feasting on some gigantic lobsters, geoduck and Australian crabs *gulps* Hmmm… thou shalt not covet! Go enjoy your humble prawns, crabs and fish!
We ordered prawns and had them steamed plain. For prawns and crabs, we prefer them steamed plain to enjoy the natural taste and sweetness.
Fresh scallops… but nope we did not order them.
Baby squids.
We ordered these 2 types of shell fish. Cass, my seashell craze girl even tapau-ed the empty shells with thorns back to the hotel and gawd did they stink like sh*t! I spent my morning washing the shells with soap in the hotel but still, the fishy odor lingered on until today.
Our baked crabs. A trip to Penang will never ever be complete if the hubs does not get his dose of crabs. He will not even leave the island should he not get to eat crabs ha ha ha! This was our first round. When he did not feel satiated (he has 3 princesses who are all absolute crab lovers too!), he ordered another 2 crabs!
Steamed fish…
Our yellow shell fish (as seen in the 7th picture above cooked into this dish). The picture here is a tad unclear and does not do justice to the dish. The actual dish was delish! Loved the texture of the chewy yet not rubbery shell fish meat.
Stir-fried lala with ginger and spring onions….
Steamed prawns with ginger – simplicity is the ultimate sophistication! We do not like other sauces to mask the natural flavor and sweetness of the prawns.
Oyster omelette (ho chien) and thorny seashells. We did not quite like the thorny seashell meat as it was a tad hard and rubbery and strenuous on our jaws ha!
We ordered 6 pandan coconuts and 2 glasses of umbra juice to quench our thirst and to expel the heatiness after a day of marathon eating in Penang. This time, we could almost tick off all the items on our To Eat List but did not have ample time to drive all the way to Kek Lok Si market to savour the assam laksa! Still good anyway, despite a short 24 hours stay in Penang 🙂
All in all, we really enjoyed our seafood dinner at Bali Hai with my parents. And I think we will be visiting this restaurant again in our next visit to Penang.
