Lately, I am hooked on overnight oats!
Oats have never really been my favorite food. But after overnight oats became a Facebook sensation for the past one week, where almost all my blog friends have been coming up with their own juicy creation of overnight oats, I got hooked on it too!
This is my 3rd batch of overnight oats. I soaked about 6 tablespoons of organic oats with fresh milk, macadamia nuts, chia seeds and pine nuts.
Note : full cream milk will produce a very creamy texture vs. low fat milk which will produce a less creamier texture.
Just before eating the oats, I cut up some avocado and tossed in a few dried cranberries. You can add in whatever trimmings that fancy you but try not to add in trimmings that are overly sweet. Oatmeal is actually quite rapidly converted to sugar, and even if you leave off the added sugar, dried or fresh fruit, you will still experience high blood sugars. Steel-cut oats and oat groats are healthier than oatmeal.
I used to soak the oats with some fruits too but after giving it some thought, mixing and soaking freshly cut fruits with milk overnight ain’t a very healthy idea. Moreover, fruits will go through oxidation process. Thus, I now prefer to add in fruits just before I eat the oats. Aromatic fruits like bananas, strawberries, mangoes, oranges and jackfruit will go better with the overnight oats. I also like to drizzle some gula melaka (coconut palm sugar) into my oats.
Another reason why I am so hooked on chilled overnight oats is the recent killer hot weather. Whenever hunger pang kicks in, I just open the fridge door and wallop a few spoonfuls of cold overnight oats. The cold creamy oats going down my throat and into my tummy douses the heat within instantly!  This is definitely a healthier alternative to ice-cream and it tastes yummy too!
Here’s a tip for those of you who are diabetic or are on a diet – You can lower the GI (glycemix index) of oatmeal by combining it with a little lean protein, such as milk, a half-scoop of protein powder, or some natural yogurt. Healthy fats are another fantastic option. Add in nuts like walnuts and almonds or a sprinkling of ground flaxseeds and chia seeds. Cinnamon or nutmeg are also good options to add flavoring, without the sweetness. Remember not to adulterate your oats with lashings of sugar, cream, dried fruits and jam 🙂

Looks very yummy and creamy.. Yep, I’ve seen the same in those mummy forums.. They also soak the oats with milk in transparent glass jars like yours.. The presentation very nice too..
Louiz, have you tried it too? Overnight oats is a very versatile healthy snack which you can concoct yourself to your liking by putting in any ingredient that you like 🙂
You mean to say you soak instant oats in milk overnight in the fridge and eat it the next day? The oats that I usually pour hot water over it? Has the milk got to be hot too? What if I use soya bean milk instead of dairy milk? Why overnight and not at the time just before consumption?

Overnight oats are just oats soaked overnight that absorb the liquid you put them in – any kind of liquid you like! The most common mixture is equal parts raw rolled oats, milk and yogurt. You can use any kind of yogurt, milk or liquid. Soy bean milk and almond milk also can. I had even tried soaking my oats in coffee milk. Put in the fridge overnight and let ‘em soak up the liquids. I like to store the oats in a glass jar, covered. I use cold fresh milk to soak the oats. It has to be overnight so that the oats are soft and have absorbed the liquid. And it tastes great if eaten chilled 🙂
yes I do dear 🙂 but the difference is I always prepare oats with yogurt and berry’s
but I’m sure it will be more yummier with creamy milk and nuts …i’ll try your recipe today itself .

I just put water to soak the oats for a few hours (not even overnight) and then put nuts such as walnuts, pecans, pine nuts and it tastes great to me!

Just be cautious that rolled oats are processed. I try to stay away from them, although I have to admit they are great for apple crumble pie! I use steel cut oats which are less processed. Trouble is it has to boil for 15 mins. Short cut is I soak them overnite, in the morning, bring to a boil for 3 – 5 mins, add in shredded coconut, an egg, sprinkle of salt and whatever else, and ready to go! Good thing is it really fills one up and keep hunger pangs at bay. My aunt in KL enjoys it cold, so she makes a big pot and keeps it in the fridge for a few days. Have you seen the chia seed- pudding that is basically chia seeds and a liquid, milk, coconut milk, soymilk, etc, pop in the fridge for a couple of hours? Plan to try that out.
Thanks for the tip Chris. Oh yes, anything processed is not very good. NExt time round, I’ll get the steel cut oats. The chia seed pudding sounds yummy! I love any dessert with coconut milk in it. Let me google search for the recipe!
