Hooked On The Wimp

I’ve got a confession to make and I’ll bet you’ll roll on the floor laughing till your stomach aches.  I have always reprimanded my girls not to spend hours on end sitting on the royal throne to perform their business with a book in hand but I am now starting to follow suit my girls’ dirty habit coz I’ve just been bitten by the wimpy bug – I am hooked on my girls’  ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’!

It all started last week when I could not find any interesting reading materials in the bathroom when I performed my daily morning ritual on the throne.  The only book left on the rack was the above green Diary of a Wimpy Kid belonging to Aly and Sher.  So what the heck, I grabbed it and read it anyway.  After just a few interesting pages, I began to realize why my girls can spend over an hour sitting on the throne, just to finish off their  story book.  Plus, the more I read the Wimpy Kid’s The Last Straw, the more I could see how much Alycia is alike the Wimpy Kid!  Just like the wimpy kid in the book, Alycia needs her power nap, she does not like her mummy nagging advising her, she needs sugary food to give her the sugar rush and energy and so much more. I guess most kids her age go through this wimpy kid phase.  Sometimes I get very frustrated when I am unable to reason out things with her and our conversation snowballs into a fireball of heated argument.  I realize that we adults sometimes have to step into our kids’ shoes and try to see through their eyes to understand what they are going through instead of barking right away at their follies.  And I shall continue to hijack my girls’ Wimpy Kid to understand better what goes through the mind of a kid! 😀

Our Saturday – 27 April 2013 And The Election Campaign Fever

Today is a school-going day for Alycia and Sherilyn. It is a replacement school day for the holiday given on Qing Ming (All Souls Day) 2 weeks ago.  Everyone at home was up at 5:45am today — while Alycia and Sherilyn were getting themselves ready, the MIL’s iPad buzzed as she had a Skype video call from her youngest daughter who lives in Hawaii.  So the MIL and the 3 girls chatted with koo koo  and me, I was busy as usual getting some house chores done before rushing Aly and Sher down to catch the school van.

After my morning exercise, the hubs tied Cass’ hair while I had my shower. And off we went to the nearby coffee shop for breakkie.

Someone’s beer belly has shrunk!! Can you see in the picture?  So glad that he finally had the determination to go all out to shed the pounds by working really hard in the gym and donning on his Speedo mens swimwear to swim laps at the pool!

From the outside of the coffee shop, we saw an entourage of people donning on red uniforms and paparazzis with huge cameras.   We could already guess that it was some MPs making their rounds to mingle with the Rakyat.

Can you spot Teresa Kok in pink? She was distributing her Party’s bulletin and rooting for support.

Teresa Kok was walking from table to table with her supporters holding a box to collect donation.  One of her supporters gave Cass this …

Miniature doll fighters…. fighting for Teresa Kok!

… and she asked if we would like to take pix with Teresa.  I politely declined as I did not want our photo to appear in the newspapers since the paparazzis were following her as she took pix with the patrons at the coffee shop.   I can’t wait for the election to be over.  Everyday, my Facebook wall is flooded with news, party war and gossips on GE13.  Every Tom, Dick and Harry is talking about it. My friends and the hubs’ friends are all talking about it. Some are hard core supporters with flags and banners hung all over their house compounds.  Even kids are talking about it and seem to be very savvy about what’s going on. Even Alycia and her classmates are talking about GE13 as one of her classmates is the son of a prominent Datuk who is an MP… and this classmate has been telling Alycia and his friends about his worry should his father lose in the election *facepalm*!!

My Health Freak Breakfast – 25 April 2013

After a  half-hour workout in the gym today where I burned 300+ calories, here’s what I had for breakfast:

1 packet of Ryvita’s mini cream cheese & chives rye crackers (shared with Cass) and half a bowl of honey nut granola topped with untoasted hazelnuts, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and three juicy strawberries. I only poured half a cup of Anlene plain yoghurt into my bowl of granola as 1 cup equals  91 calories and I wanted to use the remaining 45.5 calories for my Haaegan Dazs ice cream later, muahahaha!

I’ll bet only health, fitness and diet freaks will eat such boring grub and with calculation of calories and carbs in mind! 😀

New Found Flash Cards

Cass was rummaging through my drawers  last week and guess what she fished out from the deepest end of the drawer that I hardly open? Boxes of flash cards on Math (division, addition, subtraction), words, opposites and nouns! They were all new and I was so pleasantly surprised with her unintentional discovery!  I inspected the flash cards and tried hard to trace back when I had bought them.   Moments later of trying to muse over the history of the new flash cards, I remembered that I had bought them 6 years ago, back in the early year of 2007, when Cass was not even formed yet!  Imagine the cards have been sitting nicely inside the deepest and darkest spot inside my bedroom drawer and had it not been Cass’ curiosity to dig inside the drawer, I think the flash cards would have to be given away later.  They ain’t cheap ok and I bought them when I was still very much a pro-flash cards full-time SAHM with a full-time maid and had so much time on hand to flash cards to Alycia and Sherilyn up to 3-5 times a day!  I even had the time to make my own flash cards and even made my own story books with pictures of Alycia and Sherilyn and a story to go with each picture to pique their interest in reading.

Anyway, the flash cards are still handy.  Since Sherilyn still faces confusion with the spelling of some nouns in plural like when to change ‘f’ to ‘ves’,  ‘y’ to ‘ies’, etc., I started to flash the cards to her with Cass observing and learning as well.  But the Math flash cards with simple additions are too easy even for 5-YO Cass.  I still do not have the heart to give them away as the cards are still so new and are very sentimental to my heart. Perhaps I will just do like what my mum likes to do, that is to keep them for my grand-children HAHA!

Serai Restaurant @ Life Centre, KL And We Saw Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk K!

We spent a good 15 minutes at the church car park yesterday, at a lost over where to head to for lunch. Finally, the foodie hubs suggested going to Life Centre at the heart of the Golden Triangle to try out some new restaurants at the refurbished Life Centre as he had heard positive review from his friend on the cluster of new restaurants at Life Centre.

We made the right choice of restaurant yesterday as the food was impeccable, great ambience and service was good too. Actually we wanted to try the Japanese restaurant next to Serai but it was fully booked, so we went back to Serai. Just after I was seated, I spotted 2 familiar faces directly opposite me. It was Malaysia’s most popular song bird Siti Nurhaliza and her hubby Datuk K! What a pleasant surprise. Datuk K was still donning on a neck braces and appeared very quiet, which is understandable as he is still recovering from a near-fatal road accident that happened overseas a few months ago.

Serai @ Life Centre exudes a chic and unique concept in a fashionable urban setting in KL’s Golden Triangle. Emulating the dining experience of its sister outlets, Serai @ Life Centre reflects an exclusive look and feel, incorporating floor to ceiling windows with picturesque views of the outdoors. The menu comprises of fusion food – mainly  local delights as well as Western.

Here’s what we had:

Serai Platter @ RM25 per plate…

Nasi Kerabu @ RM22 per plate…

Chicken and beef sate @ RM15 per plate. We initially ordered only 1 plate but after tasting how delish it was, we ordered another plate.  Loved the thick and luscious peanut sauce which ain’t too spicy.

Pumpkin salad @ RM16.90

Middle Eastern Medley @ RM45.  The rice tasted like nasi Briyani and the lamb shank was superb — tender, juicy and full of flavors!

Seafood Marinara @ RM27 and there was also a chicken mushroom pasta @ RM12 under the kids menu (not in picture)…

Serai iced tea @ RM8.50 and Minted Calamansi Soda @ RM10.50. Loved both the refreshing drinks!  The serai (lemongrass) tea went very well with the mint leaves and ice sorbet.  The fresh mint leaves drink also paired terrific with the soda. Both drinks were not overly sweet and very invigorating on a hot afternoon.

Milky Bandung (rose syrup with fresh milk) @ RM8.50 and Teh Tarik @ RM5.50 to go with the Tiramisu @ RM14.80…

Oreo Cheese Cake…

Total damage was RM302.75 for 5 adults and 3 kids, which is fairly reasonable as the food was above par in taste, presentation and price.   Very satisfactory service and love the spacious setting of the classy restaurant. Would definitely make a return soon!

Tragic News

I had a major shock of my life early this morning when I logged in to my Facebook account to read the postings by my friends  on my News Feed.   I could not believe my eyes when I read that one of my customers was stabbed to death by some cold-hearted muggers yesterday evening.  It was the deceased’s sister who posted about the death and her sister is also my regular customer.  The deceased is only in her early 50s and she was such a nice and easy-going customer. The victim died while organizing a Hash Run. She was a massive supporter of Safer Malaysia and was always involved in charity work. She was stabbed 4 times and bled to death by the time her husband arrived and the ambulance took her to UH. They were at Gasing Hill for a Hash Run. Their daughter was with them too.

2 men were on a motorbike and had stopped next to the victim and her daughter. The pillion rider stepped off the bike and immediately stabbed her and tried to take her pouch. She shielded her teenage daughter and before the 2 men could harm the daughter, the young girl ran for her dear life. The daughter witnessed the entire tragedy.

I just cannot fathom why such a good-hearted person has to die at such a young age and in such a tragic and cruel manner. It is my hope that the ruthless murderers will be caught in the shortest possible time, face justice and serve due penance. May they rot in h*ll! I myself was a snatch theft victim and thank God I was not injured, albeit I have now developed a phobia of passing motorbikes whenever I walk or run on the road. And that’s why I always have a pepper spray in my pocket when I run on the road.  The scum was never caught and I never expected that our policemen would be capable of nabbing such criminals. The hubs’ car was stolen twice and in broad daylight on both the occasions! The car thieves were never caught too!  Pray tell how many more Malaysians must suffer and die before our security system wakes up!

Chia Seeds Goodness

This is my latest health freak food for the kids and myself – chia seeds!

I add a teaspoon of chia seeds to my drink everyday — then wait for 15 minutes for the seeds to bloat up after the seeds soak up the water like a sponge, before I chew on them. The texture and taste are similar to that of the seeds in kiwi and strawberry, which is very refreshing and ‘crunchy’.  Rascal #2 requested that I add a teaspoon of the chia seeds into her tumbler of plain water to be brought to school. I’ll bet the social butterfly had a fun time showing the ‘tadpoles’ drink to her friends in school 😀

Goodness of Chia Seeds:

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Chia seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds’ lipid profile is composed of 60 percent omega-3s, making them one of the richest plant-based sources of these fatty acids — specifically, of alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. The omega-3s in chia seeds can help reduce inflammation, enhance cognitive performance and reduce high cholesterol.

Fiber
Fiber is associated with reducing inflammation, lowering cholesterol and regulating bowel function. Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, with a whopping 10 grams in only 2 tablespoons. That is one-third of the daily recommended intake of fiber per day.

Antioxidants
Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals, aging and cancer. The high antioxidant profile also helps them have a long shelf life. They last almost two years without refrigeration.

Minerals
Two tablespoons of chia seeds contain 18 percent of the DRI for calcium, 35 percent for phosphorus, 24 percent for magnesium and about 50 percent for manganese. These nutrients help you prevent hypertension and maintain a healthy weight, and are important for energy metabolism and a part of DNA synthesis.

Satiety
Satiety is the feeling of being full and satisfied, which helps lower food cravings between meals. The combination of protein, fiber and the gelling action of chia seeds when mixed with liquids all contribute to their satiating effects.

Gluten-Free
Chia seeds contain no gluten or grains. Therefore, all of the nutritional benefits of chia seeds can be obtained on a gluten-free diet.

Egg Replacer
The outer layer of chia seeds swells when mixed with liquids to form a gel. This can used in place of eggs to lower cholesterol and increase the nutrient content of foods and baked goods. To make the egg replacement, mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water and let sit for 15 minutes.

Can Be Digested Whole
Unlike flaxseeds, which are also high in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and minerals, chia seeds do not need to be ground in order to obtain their nutrient or egg- replacement benefits.

Dyslipidemia
A study published in the “British Journal of Nutrition” showed that chia seeds as a dietary fat source can lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels while increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol. The study also found that when substituting chia seeds for other fat sources, such as corn oil, the ALA was able to prevent high triglyceride levels and reduce central obesity.

Blood Sugar Regulation
Chia seeds can play an important role in regulating insulin levels. They can reduce insulin resistance and decrease abnormally high levels of insulin in the blood.

The Big Girl’s Meltdown

The big girl had a major meltdown this morning from 6am right through to lunch time!  I had blogged that her fever had subsided yesterday but at around 6ish pm, her temperature shot up to 38.6 degrees Celsius again but she was not feeling uncomfortable. She felt pretty normal and had pretty good appetite.  Only her body was very warm, which was partly aggravated by the melting hot weather with a temp. of 35 degrees yesterday.  So the hubs forbade her from going to school.

This morning, when the hubs stopped Alycia from going to school, he unknowingly opened the Pandora’s Box!  Alycia threw into a horrible fit of rage!  She sobbed and wailed and pleaded for us to allow her to go to school.  But the hubs said “NO” and no means no, period!  The big girl bawled uncontrollably which made her daddy angrier.  Thank goodness there is always the indulgent grandma to ‘sayang’ the big girl and pulled her back to her bedroom and tried to comfort her.  The brouhaha this morning was something that is happening pretty often of late.  I had blogged in one of my earlier posts that lately, this big girl is having a hard time managing her emotions and the manner in which she talks to us.  Long story cut short, the big girl went back to bed and cried herself back to sleep. When she woke up, she was still angry with all of us and put on the longest, sulkiest face ever *facepalm*!!

After sending off rascal #2 this morning, I jogged to the mobile market to get a packet of yee mein and prawns to prepare the big girl’s favorite noodles dish for lunch.

A mother knows best. After this delish lunch of yee mein cooked with prawns, squids, fish balls, chicken fillet, veggie and egg sauce, the big girl’s mood was lifted up instantly!

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and I think this adage holds true for kids too! 😉

Lunch For The Kids Today – 16 April 2013

After 3 days of vomiting and retching with zilch appetite, Alycia’s appetite is slowly returning today. For 3 days, everyone at home has been eating porridge and vermicelli cooked with minimal oil and meat.  According to the paed’s suspicion, Alycia has been attacked by some kind of virus. You know doctors, when they cannot be certain as to what is wrong with their patients, they will usually diagnose them as suffering from viral fever – the ‘cannot be ascertained sickness’ — you agree with me? I thank God that her body temperature is now back to normal after hovering at 39.4 – 39.9 degrees Celsius for the past 3 days.  All kinds of thoughts on what could be wrong with Alycia ran through my mind — from Dengue fever to bird flu, chicken pox to the latest H7N9 virus.  The paed told us to bring Alycia back to this office should the fever not subside by today (Tuesday) and she will then be prescribed with antibiotics – the medication that I dread the most as I had seen the ugly side effects antibiotics had caused to my kids — which made them sicker!! The ultimate horror of antibiotics is when the bacteria in your body becomes resistant to it. That was what happened to Cass when she was on long-term prophylactic antibiotics and that is another long story to be told.

Anyway, according to the girls’ BM tutor, more than 30 people from a school in KL had been down with the same sickness with similar symptoms.  So I guess that this strain of virulent virus is now in the air. So parents, please keep your child hydrated, ensure that they pop their vitamins, eat healthily and stay away from crowded places, if possible.

Today, I asked Alycia what she’d like to have for lunch and we spent more than an hour to finally think of something that she felt like eating!  Instead of going to a nearby Japanese restaurant to have ramen or soba as suggested by the mil, Alycia told me that she wanted to eat Maggie mee, of all things!  So the mil and I came up with our healthy version of instant noodles for Alycia, without any MSG.

Our healthy maggie mee, minus the sachet of powdered junk.  The soup base is chicken breast fillet with tomatoes and squids, a dash of salt and bonito flakes.  Made some scrambled eggs too.

Starting from tonight, I can have my restful and uninterrupted sleep again after having to wake up several times at ungoldly hours in my groggy state  of mind for the past 4 nights to sponge my 10-year old girl and to feed her with water and fever meds.  Oh well, that’s the fun of being a mother!

Someone is Under The Weather

….which spells trouble for any mummy!

Alycia has been running a high temperature (up to 39.4 degrees Celsius) since Friday evening. What’s worrying this quack doctor mummy is that she shows almost no symptoms, except for a slight phlegmy throat.  Alycia is also complaining of dizziness, headache and generally feeling malaise with not much appetite. I am highly suspecting dengue fever or a problematic throat (this girl is very susceptible to throat infections and phlegm).  I am planning to wait for another day for her body to self heal BUT I am getting too much pressure from people surrounding me, urging me to bring her to the doctor.  From my 10 years of experience handling fevers with my 3 girls, I know what the doctors will say, do and prescribe. I know that the doctor will probably prescribe Alycia with kids dosage of paracetamol, which I am already giving to her since yesterday. And I do NOT want the doctor to conveniently prescribe my kid with antibiotics, which can cause more harm than good.  Blood test to rule out dengue fever is best done  from the 5th day of the onset of a fever.  I also have experience caring for 2 dengue patients before (hubs and the mil).  So to placate the people dear to Alycia, I will bring her to the doctor’s office today, so that everyone gets peace of mind.

On a  side note, let me show you a canvas poster color painting of the portrait of Vincent Van Gouh, which Alycia painted at her art class on Friday….

After 10 months of attending art enrichment classes, Alycia has made giant strides in her painting skill 🙂

Art For Year 4 KBSR Students

A few days ago, I was taken by surprise when Alycia showed me a pack of colorful styrofoam pieces for assembling.  For a moment, I thought that her friend had given her a pack of jigsaw puzzle. But she told me that it was her school homework from Art class!  I thought that she was  pulling my leg.  For the life of me, I have never received such fun looking homework from school, ever!  How could she have received from her school such awesome home assignment?  I think it is good that kids are given the opportunity to learn how to assemble such things.  I admit that I am terrible in assembling crafts like this one.  I have no patience or interest to do such stuff. So thumbs up to the school for introducing such an interesting craft to pique the interest of kids from young.

Alycia, having so much fun assembling the photo frame, which took her less than 15 minutes

Daddy was equally surprised to see this photo frame! For the lives of us, we have never done such  fun thing in school. All we did was the boring old stuff of drawing and painting lol!

Lastly, the pupils are to insert a photo into the photo frame before submitting their assignment to the teacher and Alycia chose her class group photo 🙂

When The Brain Feels Sluggish

Being a blogger, I have my fair share of days when my brain feels like it ain’t performing up to par and needs a jolt from its dormant state of mind. Today is just one of those days. I knew that today would be one of those days when the brain feels sluggish the minute the alarm on my mobile phone buzzed at 5am. Normally, I would spring right out from bed but today, my head felt fuzzy and my body felt burnt out. My body was able but my mind was not. I was so tempted to cover myself with the blanket and return to slumberland but a few seconds of shut eye could eventually lead to an hour and this can be disastrous on a school-going day! I can only blame it on the wacky hormones wrecking havoc inside me at this time of the month.

On a school-going day, the mornings are the best time for me to nap as there is absolute peace at home with no disruption and hullabaloo from the kids but I normally take the opportunity to make full use of the peace to do my online assignments and work from my online store. I am so tempted to take a cat nap now but I have to help the hubs with some work and to check out some knoll sofa at homeq.com.au. We are looking for a new set of sofa and I will be surfing the net to check out for stunning selections for ideas. I have exactly forty whirlwind minutes  to complete my work before it is time to pick up Cass from school and that will be the start of my stressful day once the rascals are back!

Our Tuesday – 9 April 2013

Today after my ‘refresher driving lesson’ with hubs, I told him that we should avoid having another fattening breakfast.  I’ve had enough of pastries and sausages from Ficelle for the past one week and I certainly did not want to eat noodles, rice or any carbs.  So after dropping off Cass in school, we stopped at the fruits shop.  He ordered a freshly blended juice while I ordered a whole coconut.  I had eaten fruits at home earlier in the morning.

After our fruit juice breakfast, we walked to the bakery to get her a cake for her birthday celebration  in school later.

When everyone was singing the “Happy Birthday” song to Cass, her expression suddenly turned from happy to one that was on the brink of crying! And she covered her mouth with her palm as if to stifle an outburst of emotions, just like how those beauty queens normally react when they are announced the winner. I thought she was really going to tear but thank God, she soon smiled again when daddy asked her to cut the cake LOL! After school, I asked her if she almost wanted to cry during the celebration in school and she said YES! I asked her if she was overcome with emotions and joy and she said YES! I told her that it is normal to feel this way and then I told her about her birth story and that I also teared when I heard her first cries in the OT exactly 5 years ago today!

Tonight, to make this feel like her day, I will be ordering pizzas to be delivered to our place for dinner. I pray to God that He will bestow my baby girl with good health, happiness and wisdom always.

Happy birthday baby girl! You’ve certainly come a long way to reach this day and I pray that your subsequent birthdays will be filled with happiness and good health too.

Our Sunday – 7 April 2013

Today has been a marvelous day for us. We were not late for church and the girls learnt something new in Sunday School. I accompanied Cass throughout her session spent in Sunday School as she was reluctant to let go of me. I actually enjoy pre-schoolers’ Sunday School very much as I treat it as a refresher class on the bible for me. To recap, the Sunday School teacher told the kids a story extracted from the book of Genesis, on the Tower of Babel. It was a good opportunity for me to reinforce the importance of obedience to Cass, that she has to not only obey God but to obey mummy, else she will be punished like how God punished the people who refused to listen to him and continued building the tower of Babel.

After church, we headed to Bangsar Village for lunch. My main intention of going to Bangsar Village was to support my good friend, Patsy’s charity initiatives of raising funds for the kids of Myanmar. This lady has a heart of gold and she is always on the go, helping the needy. She has been making frequent trips to Myanmar to help the kids of Myanmar in various areas. I met several of my blogger friends at the charity drive – Rachel Toh, Elaine Lee, Syn Nee and another childhood friend of mine. They were all at the charity drive to give support to the organizers and at the same time, to help make a difference to the lives of some needy kids with their purchases.

I spent my entire evening helping Cass and Sherilyn with their homework from Sunday School. While the homework for Cass was pretty easy and fun, Sherilyn’s homework required me to refer to the bible. I whipped up my King James Bible but the words were so small that my eyes were almost cocked lol! So I went online to check for answers, which was such a breeze and super fast too!

The kids are still having their home-cooked dinner of chicken rice now as I am typing this post. I can’t wait to send them all to bed so that I can sit down and relax and do the things that I want to do without any interruption!

Me with Patsy, the lady with a heart of gold and Tessa, her lovely 9-YO who made the felt tissue paper holders that I am holding in this picture. I bought 3 from her stall 🙂

Me with the very lovely Tessa.

Cassandra’s 5th Birthday Dinner

In 3 days, Baby C will turn 5!!  Baby C is the moniker that I used in my blogs to refer to Cassandra ever since she was born and I stopped using this nick name as I feel that she is too old to be called a baby. But in my eyes, she will forever be my youngest baby girl, the baby girl who has brought me so much heartaches, moments of despair, heart attack moments, stress and yet, so much joy, pride and laughter.

Today being a Saturday, we celebrated her birthday in advance at Xenri D’river View Japanese Restaurant.  We asked her several times where she’d like to have her birthday celebration and she had steadfastly stated that she wanted only Japanese food!

I’ll leave you with some of the pictures that I had taken with my mobile phone camera just a moment ago, thus the not so sharp quality of the pix.

A galore of mouth watering food…

Love this deep fried oysters…

What’s missing in this pic is Alycia, my camera-shy girl and of course the woman who bore these 2 lovely girls for she was busy snapping pix…

It’s all shown in her face. She’s one very happy and satisfied soon-to-be 5-year old girl.

Homecooked Meals

Grandma made a batch of pumpkin buns just before dinner.  My bread-crazed Cass announced to grandma that she ain’t going to eat rice and only wanted to eat mien pau (bread in Mandarin) with homemade kaya and cheese.  So while the rest of us had rice with yummy homecooked dishes, Cass had bread and I only nibbled on the dishes, minus the rice.

Our dinner on Wednesday — stir-fried cabbage with julienned carrot, steamed minced pork with water chestnut, french beans omelet and a fried rice left over from lunch.

The mil is away for a few days, so I am back in action in the kitchen again! Tonight I will cook a one-pot dish cum soup of anchovies with spinach and chicken drumsticks.   There is still some porridge left in the pot, which I cooked for lunch.

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂

HEALTH FREAK MOMMY
