Parenting is Challenging

Everyday, I have to embrace a myriad of issues pertaining to my 3 girls, aged almost 5 years old, 8 years old and an almost 10 years old tween.  Everyday I grapple with old problems and on some days, I get ‘interesting’ issues which really stir my mind on how to deal with them effectively so as not to aggravate them further.  Oh, how I wish that I could conveniently remove the ‘gr’ from the grapple and just gobble down the issue as if it were an apple!

Just yesterday, I had to  face these minor issues related to my kids.  I have to always bear in mind that if these minor issues are not nipped at the bud, they could accelerate into problems that can get out of control in time to come.

1) When I picked Cass up from pre-school, her teacher told me that Cass has been writing her letters in the wrong order. For eg.  for the letter ‘b’– Cass has been writing the stroke from bottom up instead of from up to bottom. The teacher asked me to find out why Cass is writing this way, i.e. could she think that it is fun to go against the grain??  Or is this a sign of a learning issue? Back home, I asked Cass to write the letters of the alphabet and her strokes were mostly correct. So I could only guess that this rascal was trying to be funny by going against the grain. Well, I admit that even up to now, at times I still write my letters in the wrong order of stroke, just to beat boredom @J@ Sign  of learning issues for me too??

2) After Aunty J, the van driver had dropped off Alycia and Sherilyn at our condo, she called me on my mobile phone to lodge yet another complain on this rascal!  She told me that Sherilyn has been trying to be a dare devil by opening the door of the van even before the van comes to a complete halt, despite warnings from Aunty J not to do it!  When Alycia heard our conversation, she then remembered that yesterday, her dare devil sister had also sat at the forefront seat of the van, next to Aunty J WITHOUT belting up!  Imagine the gravity of the consequences in the event the van collides with another vehicle!! I tried to draw up an exaggerated story of a horrified and gruesome accident in the mind of this rascal to scare this audacious brat and I hope that she has taken heed and will not repeat this stunt  again.

3) Alycia had yet another meltdown yesterday when I told her to stop burying her face in story books. Lately, Alycia has a  habit of burying her face in storybooks and her eyes will be glued to the book even when she is walking (both at home and outside which can be hazardous), at meal times, in the car, preparing her bed at night and and she can sit at the throne for over an hour, poring into her storybook.   I have also caught her peeping at her storybooks when her Mandarin tuition class was on-going.  Her exam will begin on Monday next week and each time I give her workbooks to do or try to start revising with her,  she would give me a sigh, followed with an eyes-rolling pissed off look and at times, get into a fits of rage and would often end up teary eyed, with a long, sulky face, books thrown on tables, door slammed and she venting out her anger on her sisters by hitting them.  Could this be that her hormones are wracking havoc in this tween of mine?  Or is she doing all these in the name of establishing her own identity? To begin with, this girl can be quite a bull-head since her Terrible Twos days. In fact, of the 3 girls, I’ve had the hardest time dealing with Alycia when she was in her Terrible Twos.  She may be an introvert and not very sociable, she may look demure but looks are really deceiving. She can be downright stubborn.

I wonder what juicy issues await me when my 3 girls are back from school today!

Parenting is such a challenge. Does it ever get any better?

A Day Out At Ikea And I Think We Ate Horse Meat!!

Yesterday, I had to let Cass ponteng class for a day coz I had to go to Ikea to finish off the credit in my account before it expires (my contract as blogger with Ikea ended last Nov). That was the first time I made Cass ponteng class and she was bathed in mixed emotions of both happy and guilty for skipping class when she’s not sick o_O

Our lunch at the Ikea cafe….

Can you see the plate of the ever-popular Ikea meatballs on the table? Yeah, that’s my all-time favorite meal at Ikea and we walloped them all and after checking out for our purchase, I even bought a bag of Ikea meatballs. Was so happy with this purchase until I read from news.sky.com posted by one of my friends in Facebook that  tainted horse meat has been found in Ikea meatballs *GULP*!  Now, what am I going to do with the RM30 bag of Ikea meatballs now?

I also grabbed 3 packs of my favorite Ikea ginger almond thins at RM5 only… and Cass couldn’t be happier that she could fix her own ice cream at the Ikea ice cream vending machine. The expression on her face was priceless!

2) Steamed egg with minced meat

Foodie Baby

That’s how my foodie baby eats her porridge — by cracking up a CNY Bee Hives biscuit and scattering them onto her porridge, just like how it’s done at Chinese restaurants that serve porridge for dim sum! Of the 3 girls, Cass is the most appreciative of food and can eat like a horse without gaining much weight. I wish I have her insatiable appetite and high metabolism too! And I hope she will not balloon up into a tai fei por, LOL!

Hi-Tech Gadgets-Savvy Family

I am sure most families in this high tech era are technologically driven with almost every member in the household owning either a desktop computer, laptop, iPad and a gadget from either the Apple or Samsung family.  My family is no different. We have the whole range of the gadgets that I mentioned earlier.  During free time, everyone will be busy tapping and swiping their fingers on their respective gadgets. These days, if you do not already own a smart phone with WiFi or a phone that requires you to swipe the screen, you are considered living in the Flinstones era!

This picture was snapped last night.  The mil was Skyping with her daughter in Hong Kong using her own iPad with Alycia and Sherilyn joining in the conversation, Cass was watching a cartoon on the laptop and me, I was busy using my Samsung Note mobile phone to capture this scene and then sent this picture to my desktop computer for purpose of this blog post LOL!  Well, in fact I have already ditched my digital Canon IXUS camera since 2 months ago and am now snapping pix using my Samsung Note as it is way faster to save the pix into my desktop computer.   After snapping the pix on my mobile phone, I either post the pix to my Facebook page or send it to my email account immediately.  If I  use a digital camera, I will be too lazy (plus time is another factor) to find my USB cord to transfer the pix from the camera to my desktop computer.  Thus, you will notice that  many of my pictured posts these days are almost ‘live’ as I can blog about an event on the same day or the next day as opposed to many back-dated or ‘stale’ posts in the past 🙂

End Of CNY Holidays

Today we are all back to the grind after a 1-week CNY break, with me having to wake up at 5am despite getting very little sleep last night as it was Chor 8 (we call it the night of fireworks!), the most important celebration for the Hokkiens.  I wonder how my 3 girls can sleep like a log when fireworks and fire crackers were blasting for hours till about 3am since last night!

I did 3 loads of laundry this morning (since 6:30am) and will have to file off my huge stack of documents accumulated for months, today. Business from my online store will be expected to be slow for the next 2 weeks and these 2 weeks will see me getting out of the house almost everyday to accomplish tasks that I have procrastinated for months and years.

Below are some pix taken on ‘yan yat’ (the 7th day of the CNY), which happens to be Sherilyn’s birthday this year.  My princess wannabe was born on the 8th day of the CNY 8 years ago 🙂

With koong koong and granny…

This year, my princess wannabe decided not to be so princessy (for years, she had chosen Princess themed birthday cakes) and chose a Snoopy jelly cake (from Madam Lee’s Jellies) instead.  The jelly cake tasted superb. After the cake-cutting ceremony, we shared our jelly cake with patrons seated next to our table as the kids from the 2 tables were gawking at the cake when we were all in the midst of laughing and cutting the cake. They couldn’t be happier and the parents from both the tables thanked us profusely.

We had dinner at Fong Lye Taiwanese restaurant @ Hartamas.

Our favorite deep fried big prawns with mayo sauce.

Our 2013 Valentines Day

Today the mil and the hubs’ aunt brought Alycia and Sherilyn to Mid Valley Megamall for lunch and shopping.  Hubs was at a client’s function and so could not bring them out. And I was just too lazy to go out as we have been going out almost everyday during the CNY holiday. I just wanted to stay home and like what Cass said, “enjoy some peace” lol! To Cass, peace means having the whole lappie all to herself and doing whatever she wants with the lappie and no fighting with her 2 sisters 😀

Since there was no left over dishes in the fridge, I cooked instant noodles for lunch for Cass and myself… a healthy bowl of instant noodles that is, without any seasoning or soy sauce… just 2 pinches of pink sea salt, pepper and sesame seed oil. The rest of the flavor in the soup comes from 2 pieces of chicken drumsticks, some fresh Eryngii mushrooms, 2 ripened tomatoes, 2 baby sweet corns and 3 eggs. I used the rectangular dried instant noodles packed without any seasoning.

This is all for Cass and she was so glad too that she need not have to fight with her 2 sisters for the noodles!

Tonight we are having homecooked dinner at home and I think the hubs will be home with a cake as usual, just for his 3 angels to have a cake blowing, cutting and photography session for our album.  I doubt my man will surprise me with a gift since he’s just given me a X’mas pressie and next month will be my birthday.

First Day Of Our Year Of Sssssssssnake

We had our  reunion dinner at the hubs’ uncle’s house yesterday. Everyone was hissing with laughter, tossing yee sang and feasting on lots of rich CNY dishes from chicken (organic chicken) to pomfret fish, loads of pork dishes, braised mushrooms with sea cucumber, duck, gigantic prawns, several veggie dishes, soup and an array of CNY desserts and snacks.

Today, as part of our CNY tradition, my mil cooked fried vegetarian  vermicelli and a vegetarian dish.  In the morning, we had a Skype call on the mil’s iPad with her 3rd daughter in New Zealand.  The girls tempted sam koo ma with the fried vegetarian vermicelli and mandarin oranges. It was great catching up with her and her pair of cutie twin boy and girl.

The girls ‘offering’ kam (mandarin oranges) to sam koo ma

After our vegetarian lunch, hubs and I gave ang pow to our brood of 3 and they were taught how to say sweet verbal offerings to the elders.

And after this ang pow ceremony, we went to Mid Vally Megamall. Whilst the hubs, the mil and the 3 girls watched ‘Journey To The West’, I had a great time shopping — bought clothes for the girls and myself and shoes for myself haha! Nothing gives me better satisfaction than retail therapy, sssssshehehehehessssssssssssss…….

Here’s wishing my family members, all my readers and all my friends a very happy, prosssssperoussss and sssssssssmooth sssssssailing year of the Ssssssssssssssssnake!  Ularla!!

Last Day Of School Before CNY

Little Miss Social Butterfly donning on her cheongsam (from my online store) for a cheongsam parade in school today.

In addition, she also took part in a lantern-making contest last week. Today, she will be going up the stage to receive her ang pow as a reward to the lantern-making participants. She can’t wait and has been talking about this for days! If you ask Alycia if she’d like to take part in any of these, she will give me a disgusted look and say NO WAY is she going to wear a cheongsam, LOL! And no way is she going to make a lantern! Alycia will instead raise both her hands to get selected if there was a sports competition.

For those of you on a road trip traveling back to your hometown to celebrate CNY, remember to drive safely. It’s way better to be a little late than never. We will stay put in KL and my parents will be coming next week to celebrate Sherilyn’s 8th birthday. Yup, this princess wannabe was born during CNY, on the 8th day 🙂

Answering Back Rudely

My almost 5-yo baby girl has a very bad habit lately.  She has learned to answer me back, in a curt way that is!

Example of how she likes to answer me back…

After umpteen times asking her to go to the bathroom to pee, I finally blew my top.

Me –  go and wee wee right now!

Cass ignored me…

Me – if you get another UTI, I will dump you in the hospital and won’t take care of you!

Cass – SO??

Me – So you will suffer in the hospital alone!

Cass – I DON’T CARE!

I wonder where she has learned that from — the smug, rude way of answering back!!

Yesterday  evening after she has answered me back rudely, I was really pissed off with this rascal. After dinner…

Cass – mummy, I am still hungry

Me – SO?

Cass – I want to eat biscuits

Me – I DON’T CARE!

Cass – why are you talking like this?

Me – that’s how you answer me. Do you like it huh??

Cass – NO…

Me – don’t talk like that to me again, you hear me? Say SORRY now!

Cass – I am sorry mummy, I am sorry mummy, I am sorry mummy…. and she went on and on babbling apologies till I asked her to shut up lol!

A typical sight if we go shopping after 9pm…

Creamy, Nutty, Fruity Sandwich

Here is my creamy, nutty and fruity sandwich on 100% wholewheat Massimo bread.  I’ll bet no one could guess what the fillings are for the bread eh?

Wholewheat bread with light cream cheese spread, homemade marmalade jam and young grated coconut — so wholesome, full of fibre and lip smacking.  I still prefer bread for breakfast vs nasi lemak and noodles, which I find are a tad oily and heavy on the stomach as the first meal of the day.

I’ll bet not many people would want to have this for breakfast eh?  Would you?

Kobe Beef Lunch – Sunday, 3 Feb 2013

Here’s our homecooked lunch today, which is the first meal that the mil whipped up for us since her return from Hong Kong yesterday.

1) Kobe beef #5, flown from Japan to Hong Kong, which the mil brought back from Hong Kong yesterday

2) Super sweet and juicy cherries which the mil brought back from HK

3) Homemade whipped potatoes.  After mashing up the potatoes, we used a hand mixer to whip up the potatoes so that the texture is smoother.  Seasoned with fresh milk and a dash of salt and pepper

The Kobe beef was really juicy.  The kids ate medium well and without any salt or pepper, yet it was really juicy and tasty, without a tinge of beef odor.  Now I know why Kobe beef is frigging expensive! The piece  of steak you see in this picture cost over RM100 a piece.  It’s the tenderness, texture and the juiciness of the meat that give Kobe beef a cut above the rest.   The adults ate medium rare and seasoned with a little salt and pepper.

Kobe beef refers to cuts of beef from the black Tajima-ushi strain of Wagyū cattle, raised according to strict tradition in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. The meat is generally considered to be a delicacy, renowned for its flavour, tenderness, and fatty, well-marbled texture. Kobe beef can be prepared as steak, sukiyaki, shabu shabu, sashimi, teppanyaki, and more.

Tonight,  the mil is cooking dinner again. I think she is going to pan fry Salmon fish, braise pork ribs, steam Chinese sausages from HK and stir fry a veggie. We so miss her homecooked dishes and I am SO happy I don’t have to sweat it out in the kitchen anymore, for the next few months LOL!

Koo Ma, the girls said thank you very much for the Kobe beef, cherries, shoes and all the goodies!

How Are Shark Babies Born?

Rascal #2 was doing her Science in Mandarin homework (Standard 2) today and she came to a tricky question. The question asks which animals give birth to babies the way a human is being birthed, i.e. without being hatched from an egg. I could help her on most of the animals until I saw the picture of a SHARK, aha!

So what else, GOOGLE search of course! And here is the answer:

Baby sharks are called pups. Just like there are many types of sharks, there are also different ways that sharks come into this world. There are THREE ways that sharks are born (boy I never knew!):

1) eggs are laid (like birds)

2) eggs hatch inside the mother and then are born

3) pups sharks grow inside the mother (like humans)

Sharks can have from 1 to 100 babies at a time, depending on the type of shark. The ones with pups that grow inside the mother have fewer babies at a time than sharks that lay eggs outside the body.

Sharks do not care for their babies after they are born, but they do search for a safe place where they can lay their eggs or give birth.

Now, this means that the question in Sherilyn’s workbook can have 2 answers *scratch head* The person who set this question had not done his/her work thoroughly, shame shame! I hope there will not be such both-ways-questions in their Government exams in future.

I never really gave a thought on how sharks are being born. And I’ll bet you do not know too eh?

Our Typical School Going Day

5am – I wake up at 5am sharp.  Strictly no time to swipe my handphone alarm and then go back for a short snooze, coz if I do that….. I’m in for BIG trouble!  I do some house work and computer work. Then fix the girls’ lunch boxes and milk.

5:45am – The girls wake up.  Lots of screaming at Miss Dilly Dally to be FASTER, FASTER, FASTER TIE YOUR LONG HAIR OR I’LL CHOP THEM OFF, FASTER WASH UP, FASTER DRINK YOUR MILK, ETC!

6:20am – We go down and run like mad ladies to the lobby

I jog round the condo or go to the gym after sending the girls off.  Sometimes I jog to the market-on-van to buy fresh produce.  Must be back by 7:40am to prepare Cass for school. She is not any better than Miss Dilly Dally but still slightly better.

8:15am –  I send Cass off to school

8:30 – 12:30pm is ME TIME, woohooo! Just love the absolute peace at home! I hang the laundry, have a super quick breakfast and quickly do all the work that requires thinking coz when the rascals are back, I will not be able to think straight anymore.

11:30am – I have to start cooking.

12:15pm- pick Cass up from school.

2ishpm through 4ish pm – rascal #1 and #2 are back from school.  Cass takes the opportunity to play with her scooter when we go down to pick her che ches up.

4ish pm – 9pm is lots of moving round the house, fixing meals, washing dishes, washing tumblers, attending to the 3 Royal Princesses, checking their homework, explaining work to them, read to Cass, getting them ready for tuition, swimming, ballet,  lots of screaming and lots of hair-pulling moments.

9:30pm – 11:30pm – Finally peace again!!! But but but… I will be too jaded to enjoy the peace. I can even type on the computer with my eyes closes LOL!

HEALTH FREAK MOMMY
