The long drought period has finally ended and I was dancing the happy dance with the girls when it finally poured cats and dogs last week. I had been waiting for that day to arrive for over 3 months! I can now put behind my worry and fear of the impending water rationing plan that had been threatening us in the dailies for the past few months as the rain water is now filling up the dams, thank God! But I am welcoming another new worry now – our laundry. During the rainy season, our clothes do not get dried fast and have the musty odor the next day after wash. While I love living in a condo, one of the things that I have to grunt is the lack of space in the kitchen and balcony for the laundry. With an existing headache of finding a space to put a new dishwasher, another headache is the damp clothes piling up everyday during the rainy season. When the hubs and mil saw the eye-sore sight in the dining area yesterday, the hubs bought a new clothes rack yesterday, which we will have to place in the dining area temporarily, directly under the ceiling fan to air-dry our clothes LOL! Well, it is still more practical, economical and space-wise than a clothes dryer which we do not have space to put and shoots the electricity bill sky high.
Eye-sore in the dining area…
This weekend,we will also have to go shopping to get Alycia another pair of black shoes for her school. Last night, the hubs had to use a hair-dryer to dry Alycia’s pair of black shoes which was still very damp, which she only started to wear 2 weeks ago. She passed her probation and is now a school prefect. And guess what? The hair-dryer got over-heated and is now spoilt!

It is a great challenging for us too staying in the apt. What we do is we install our living room aircond compressor in the balcony to help drying process.
We also have Dryer (the basic one which can be installed above the washing machine) as our sos…where if the clothes are dry but still not 100% (damp damp smell), we will use the dryer so it will consume less electricity as compared putting wet clothes…
yes, even for me who stayed in the landed property has the same issue when rainy season.. I remembered those schooling days, I hide my shoes under the chiller / fridge to dry…
Oh same goes to us, the clothes need to hang for 2 days to get it dry. I use dryer to blow my kids shoe too but luckily my dryer is those heavy duty like the saloon one.
hmm..i thought the water rationing issue was a politically-motivated one? there’s no such thing as the dams being in critical level?
Great….Alycia is now a school prefect!
I like rainy seasons too……..but worry for the laundry too.
Hi. Just want to share some tips on drying the school shoes. After washing and scrubbing it clean, I spin dry it in the washing machine. It shortens the drying time a lot during the rainy season.
Barb, I thought so too but I think the dams could be running low too as it had been really hot and dry the past few months.
Adel, wouldn’t the spinning spoil the shoes? You tried it? How did yr shoes turn out after a few spins?
Buy for them waterproof shoes if the schools allows them.
Mum, what brand has waterproof shoes?
Yeah, rainy seasons not good for our laundry…and more work for us too!
The shoes are okay coz the shoes nowadays are very thick. A quick spin mainly to spin out the excess water.I use regular spin function, after that the shoe was just damp so very fast dry. I didn’t even use a laundry bag. Maybe you can try to put it in a laundry bag. I did more damage to the shoe from all the scrubbing.:)
Adel, thanks!
One thing i don’t want on rainy season, the laundry suck me…arrrgggg,
Have to go get a new hair dryer too. Back when I was younger, we placed the shoes under or behind the fridge and it will definitely be dry in a few hours!
If u run the aircon in the bedroom at nite, put the damp clothes in there; it will help dry.
Check the hairdryer again, might work again after it has cooled down. Did the same before with wet shoes and the thing is not to stuff the dryer right into the shoe; best to move it around, much like drying hair. Another trick I have learned is to stuff crumpled up newspaper into the shoes to soak up moisture and as well takes the stink out of them. Do it all the time with the season changes here before storing shoes away.
Just wanted to echo what Merryn posted – I used to place my school shoes under the fridge too. They would be as dry as toast the next morning 🙂
Thanks Chris, Merryn and Kit for the tips!
My fridge is the new fashion type, i.e. the bottom does not have space to slot in shoes :S
We have been having rain almost everyday here. I usually place the school shoes under the fan or in the aircon room while we sleep at night. it would be a good idea to have an extra pair just in case.
Congrats to Alycia to becoming a prefect, a good starting ground to be trained as a leader in the future.
hahaha … yes, I too, dried my shoes under the fridge…
Wow… school prefect. Congrats, Alycia.
prefect wears black shoes? how nice…wont notice the shoes are dirty, hehe…
