I am so, so, so tempted to have my nails manicured with personalized nail art BUT…
1) I prepare food for my kids everyday, 3x a day. What if the nail paint drops out bit by bit into the food? Imagine peeling an orange, cutting a slice of cake or spreading jam on a slice of bread. The food will have direct contact with the nail polish. That’s toxic and if ingested over a long period of time….I am intoxicating my own kids with nail polish!
2) I wash my youngest kid’s bump and brush her teeth (my fingers get in contact with her mouth) several times in a day and I am sure a teeny weeny bit of paint from the nail would come off over time. That’s toxic!
3) I do house chores. Definitely the paint would be scraped off during the course and if it does, my heart would ache as I see uneven and even peeling paintings on all my finger nails.
SO…. it looks like I have to ditch this vanity idea of mine and have it shelved for the next few years or perhaps forget about the idea as long as my kids live with me? I’m so sad. I envy my friends who can have their nails painted beautifully while mine have been naked for the past 10 years! I am just curious, for those of you who have to care for young kids, how do you still have your finger nails painted and how do you keep them immaculate for just 1 week?

do it on ur toe nails???
I am just as curious as you are and share the same concern as you on all 3 points eventhough I have only one kid. Mine has been kept short and naked at most times since the birth of P and to think that it was the complete opposite before. I am very concerned about things like food preparation, washing rice grains (even though yeah we could use a sieve and a spoon but really, so “mah farn”), the thought of just a little chip falling into the food is a major turn off.
Rachel, yup I only do it on the toe nails but it’s not complete when the finger nails are so naked. It’s like wearing a very nice pants / skirt but the top is bare wor!
Mommibee, yeah, so mah fan! I can wear a pair of disposable plastic gloves to prepare food but that’s so so mah fan and not environmental friendly 🙁
Hi, long time reader, first time commenter .. 😛 i’m not a mom but i seen my mom’s nails been bare since we were born .. with the same concern as you had so she only painted her toenails .. I on the other hand, paint my hands from time to time .. cause I know once I settle down, my fingernails will be bare .. 🙂
Lyn, this is one of the many sacrifices a mother has to make, so appreciate your mum even more 🙂
After having kids, I don’t have manicure or paint my nails anymore, for the same reason :-(.
i dont paint my fingernails coz i do housework period and its a waste of time if it gets chip off often and need to redo. have never thought about the toxic part though which makes sense.
so my toes get painted now and then..have resorted to do doing on my own coz cheaper. but getting lazy already. 🙂
I’ve never done my nails apart from during wedding time haha..doesn’t sound like a girl right :P. I think I’m too rough that my nails will never endure more than a week if I have them painted. I used to fix PC, gotta open up hardware, no way u can keep ur nails painted, it’ll be a waste. Actually I prefer them n@ked LOL. And just keep it slightly longer, looks like bare french mani :P. For pedi..err dare not say cause my toe nails are too ugly to do any painting, better not waste time and moos on it LOL.
I’ve never tried that ever since I had kids. Like you too I’m afraid it will fall off while I’m preparing food in the kitchen. Afterall, if we do a lot of housework, it doesn’t last long, I guess.
I am addicted to pedi but mani are a waste of $ as my nails get smudged within 2 hours! So, usually bare finger nails but I put on some neutral polish for special occasions. Reason is chips are less noticeable.
lololol. I hear you!
there’s this nail polish called Gelish. it stays on ur nail for 3-4 weeks. very nice and lasting.
i have done it twice so far. no need to worry about nails chipping. 🙂
