Despite The Busyness…

Despite my mega busyness this week, I managed to whip up something that my kids love. My girls love kaya (coconut jam) and jellies and so do I. I find it very hard to get tasty kaya with reduced sugar from shops. So the only way that I can enjoy tasty kaya that is kinder to my waist is to make them myself. Likewise for jellies, Alycia always bugs me to buy those ultra sweet jellies with sweetness that can choke me instantly. And I hate those artificial colors too. So the best way for them to enjoy jellies is to make them myself. So yesterday, I was all set to make kaya in the morning… using the slow cooker and jellies in the afternoon. And oh yes, almost forgot that I also made them mushroom pasta for lunch.

Here’s my nice-smelling pandan kaya in the slow cooker… looks smooth eh? I tell you it’s really easy peasy job to cook kaya in the slow cooker. Just don’t over cook it, else it will turn into egg pudding, like what happened to my kaya previously.

After 2 failed attempts in cooking kaya using the slow cooker, I finally got it right this time. My 2 fussy food critics gave me the thumbs up!

I quickly made Konnyaku jellies with fresh strawberries and orange slices while Baby was asleep. Alycia and Sherilyn were having Mandarin tuition at home. When the lesson was over, they had nice Konnyaku jellies as treats.

The Sisters

I better jot this funny incident before it slips my mind again. There are too many things that I had wanted to enter into my kids’ blog but busyness has always been the culprit.

A few weeks ago, Alycia was fighting with her 2 younger sisters. She fights with Sherilyn all the time but with Baby, she has a soft spot for her baby sister and often gives way to her. But even best friends fight once in a rare while, don’t they?

As Alycia was scolding her sisters, Baby snapped at her che che “you are the tai kar che! Why are you scolding your baby sister huh??” I was chuckling away to myself at what Baby had said. Her imperfect Cantonese twang when she said “tai kar cheh” (like gwai mui speaking Cantonese) made her statement even funnier. But I did not want to interfere. I do not like to interfere when they squabble, unless it gets out of hand and turns rowdy.

All in all, Alycia is a good che che. She will read to her baby sister when I am too busy. She will give her baby sister anything that she wants.

And another incident to jot down on Alycia. Yesterday she told me that her teacher gave her a yellow Angry Bird soft toy. Her school has a reward system where students who bring the most newspapers for the school’s recycling program will get a present. And what touched me was that my Angry Birds craze girl declined the present. She instead asked her teacher to give the present to another kid who wanted it badly. That’s because she already has a yellow Angry Bird soft toy at home. I think that was a very thoughtful and considerate thing to do and I’m glad she has a very generous heart.

Sick puppy

My little sick puppy is the most resilient pupper ever, just like she has always been. She survived 3 surgeries, did not shed a drop of tear when the doctor inserted an IV catheter into her hand 3 months ago for a MAG3 scan and now, she bounced back after ‘being away’ for 2 days. The 2 days were pretty worrisome for me. Her body felt like a bed of hot charcoal at 39+ degrees Celsius. She was hallucinating, had nilch appetite and did not eat much solids nor fluids for 2 days. I am very very happy that I got my nottie and chatter-box samseng back today, thank God, PTL!

My sick kitty at the height of her high fever can still muster a smile for mummy but had no strength to say “don’t put in your Facebook mummy!”

Today, there was a breakout of dots on her entire body. First time mummies would freak out and fear measles, chicken pox and Dengue fever. But an experienced mummy would just heave a sigh of relief and say good-bye to the high fever. That was what happened to Alycia, my eldest, exactly 5 years ago when she was Baby’s age. We brought her to a paed at Pantai Hospital who did a string of blood tests on her. He was an old doctor but nothing was conclusive. He just did not know what was wrong with Alycia. But my clever mum told me that I was just like that when I was little and assured me that there was nothing wrong with Alycia. My body would have a breakout of rashes/spots too after a bout of high fever. Now, whenever my girls have rashes / spots all over their face and body after a bout of high fever, I don’t freak out anymore but just monitor closely.  But high fever is no play-play matter ok.  Must make sure that your kids’ high fever is under control.

Crazy Mad Days

The past 2 days have been crazily mad and bumpy for me. The gust of bad chi seemed to have entered our house on Thursday and it seems to be still lingering in here. On Thursday morning, the moment I turned on the kitchen lights, I heard a ‘trip’ sound and the power supply to half our unit was cut off. I knew that the lever in the electric box had tripped. I was happy that my computer was not affected but I was wrong. Internet was cut and that is always one of the worst nightmares to happen to someone who earns money relying on the internet. I called Streamyx and was told that our account had been suspended!! Sh*t, I quickly woke hubs up from his sleep to inform him of the power cut and Streamyx disruption.

Long story cut short, at the end of Thursday, Baby started to develop fever. I suspected that it was because the house was like an oven with no fan and she is one who cannot tolerate heat. She is one who gets over-heated pretty easily. The whole of Friday, Baby was unwell. She only ate an egg, drank some soup and drank sips of water and Nutrifresh throughout the day. She had no appetite for food. She complained of tummy ache and purged. Today she threw up and still complained of tummy ache. We had brought her to see our usual paed today. The doctor suspected a UTI attack but I am quite sure it isn’t as I had checked her urine. It looked clear and had no foul smell. Her tummy sounds ‘windy’ though. She was given 2 suppositories to reduce the fever and vomiting. She is however still behaving rather listless, has nilch appetite and only wants to sleep. I am pretty worried. I did not sleep well the whole of last night. I had a bowl on the floor with a wet hanky which I used to sponge Baby’s body the whole night. Also woke her up to force feed her with water. I have not been exercising for the past 2 days due to lethargy and work overload.

My entire living room area is filled with stock from my five suppliers and I wish I had the time to sort them out and get them all sent out before my customers file their complaints on my FB wall! Each time I sit down and try to get some work done, there will surely be interruptions from my kiddos. Oh yes, Alycia and Sherilyn will be sitting for their final exams in 2 weeks. My to-do-list is really scary. Right now, I just want to settle all my customers’ orders before I get attacked. Next is to cook dinner, sigh!!! Next practice spelling, ejaan and ting xie with Alycia and Sherilyn. Next I have to check Baby’s temperature and feed her with water. Oh gosh, I better stop writing and do what I really have to do right now! Happy weekend peeps!

HEALTH FREAK MOMMY
