Baby’s latest fancy is to suck on ice cubes. Everyday, she will pester me for “ice cold“. Ice cubes have now become my #1 bribe whenever she fusses and refuses to pee in the potty or drink water. But after today’s incident, I think I will not give her anymore ice cubes to eat on her own. Just a moment ago, while sucking on ice cubes with her 2 jie jies at the dining table, Baby choked on a piece of ice cube. About 5 minutes into sucking the piece of ice cube, she cried and gasped for air. I dashed to her aid and pat her back with my hand. Thank God, the piece of melting ice cube shot out from her throat immediately and landed on the table. Thank God the piece of ice wasn’t lodged in her throat. That was a real scary incident. I almost lost her! Had I not been around her, she could have choked to death on the piece of ice cube!  Accidents and tragedies happen in a split second.
This post also serves as a warning to all you parents out there. If you want to let your toddler suck on a piece of ice, make sure she eats it under your watchful eyes.
My sweetie-pie has now transformed into a naughty-pie. She’s at the height of her Terrible Twos phase now. I pray that it will not intensify coz I am already at my wits’ end with her all-day horrible temper tantrums now.

omigod..this is scary Shireen. Thank God you were closed by. did you have to put her on her tummy or tilt her before patting her back?
Make her some ‘ais potong’, ribena ,lemon or plain, with a child’s plastic spoon as the ice-cream stick, so she can hold the spoon and lick the ice. Of course she still needs supervision as usual when she feeds herself with anything.

I am sure it was scarey but u can’t really choke on ice..unless of course it was a HUGE piece. My kids were fed ice all the time and even though they may choke occasionally, I just observed and the ice of course like u said melts and all is well. If it helps, and like I said, don’t know how big the cube was, just smash it in a baggie with the back of a spatula to “soften”it and break it up a bit. Regardless, always a good idea to keep an eye on toddlers as they put things in their mouth all the time! My son used to dig his fingers into his own loaded diaper and ….

Shireen, when I read about Baby C sucking ice cubes some days ago through your blog. I was actually wondering of the choking hazard. Didn’t expect it was really happened . Thank God that she is saved by you again.

this is any parent’s nightmare and thank goodness u could get it out in time and also thank goodness it’s ice. maybe u want to give her crushed ice from now on.

When I read your earlier blog about your girl and ice cubes, it did cross my mind that she might choke on it..
I had a personal experience with ice cubes when i was a child and had that near death experience.. the suffocating experience actually. Luckily, the maid at that time was fast and quick to dislodge the ice cube by whacking hard on my back and ice cube flew out.. I was about 8 years old then and since then I have been very careful with ice-cubes.
I do continue to have ice cubes in my drinks but never suck on it and hence, I dont allow any children under my care to have this habit too. It is a very dangerous thing.
Oh dear, thank God Baby C is fine. Joshie also loves ice cubes but i dare not let him suck on them for fear of choking!
