Suckling Pig No More

The set menu that the hubs chose for the dinner we had on Saturday to celebrate my dad’s birthday consisted of a suckling pig, among other dishes. I used to like suckling pig but in recent years, I have started to feel really geli (repulsive) each time I eat them, especially if there is a thick layer of fat stuck to the crispy skin.  Gee, that’s just too fattening, donch ya think so?  Just 2 weeks back, I had read an article in the newspapers on how baby animals are killed and brought to the pot and served on the dining table. I felt really gross after reading that article.

When I saw this suckling pig staring at me, I felt my stomach turning, haha…. and then the next few dishes that followed, I lost my appetite. I felt even more nauseous when the baby’s pig head was chopped into pieces for everyone to devour on, muahahahaha…. I think I should stop the hubs from ordering this dish in future – to prevent cruelty, to save money (a suckling pig ain’t cheap) and for health’s sake.  Do you eat suckling pig?

I think I should turn into a vegan soon!

  1. I was told that eating too much pork will cause blood parasite. The worms in the pig will never die no matter how long we cook them. So i chose to eat pork only once in a while, eat mostly chicken.

  2. i read that article too and i was so grossed out in how they treat the animals so cruely. i’ve never liked suckling pigs and have always passed this dish when i sat in a 8-10 course meals in chinese restaurants. my wedding time also i refused to order this dish as i feel so ‘kesian’ having so many baby pigs getting killed. and i only got to know from that article that the piglets are only 6 weeks old before being killed! so sad!

when i told hubby about this article and he said go vegan la (i’m actually on a 100 days veggie diet now and it’s so tough – my 2nd time some more!) if i want to be so extreme. personally, i can cut down on red meat and also chicken. but i dont think i can pass on seafood like fish and crabs (btw, softshell crab also are treated cruelly! sigh!).

  3. I’ll eat it if served, but not be the one to order it. In some restaurants they put shiney lights in the eyes of the dead piglet!! OMG!! I’d much prefer if they just serve a few pieces(no head or legs) with other things like bbq duck etc. The one thing I won’t eat and have successfully campaigned to have it off the menu for any big dinner is sharksfin soup. Again, an unneccessary expense and extremely cruel to the sharks which have been over-hunted.

  4. i do fancy suckling pig but i’ll scrape the fats out and just eat the skin. Amber loves it too. Perhaps if I tell her baby pigs are killed, she won’t eat. Reading this post, I feel guilty now. Maybe I should stop eating or stop hubs from ordering this dish. I love sharks find bu would rather go for artifical ones. Thicker and better texture and I’m not paying a bomb. After all they taste the same and it’s so cruel to let sharks die a slow death with fins removed. At least the piglets are killed instantly and they are bred for purpose of consumption whereas sharks are not.

  5. that’s exactly the reason i dont eark pork, bak kut teh, pig trotters, etc etc, too gross for me.
only pig i eat is luncheon meat – even that i feel gross at times.

  6. My hubby loves suckling pig too but whenever I eat it, first few pieces is still ok but after that, I will surely feel geli of the ‘taste from the fat’ and also the throat will feel quite itchy due to the ‘oil’ from the fat ……. then after we are done, my tummy will feel uneasy and feel like vomiting so I told hubby no more suckling pig for me! We just ate 1 3 weeks ago and the ‘after taste’ are still in my mouth till now I think …… definitely no more for me!! kekekeke! Actually I am quite afraid of the taste of ‘pork’ ….. don’t know why 🙁

  7. My favourite…. even my daughter likes the crispy sking, she even know it has to be dipped into the sweet black sauce to enjoy it.
I would usually scrap the fat off before i eat the skin.
Pigs are breed to be eaten, suckling pigs are also the same.
