And she’s only in the class for 3-year olds. I was shocked when I saw these 2 books in her school bag the other day. The teacher wrote ‘Revision’ on one of the books and expected the parent to coach the kids at home. I am fortunate that my mil is still around to help me coach Alycia and Sherilyn in their Mandarin homework. When she goes back to HK or NZ, it will be the blind leading the blind for I know very little Mandarin words.
Sherilyn has no problem tracing the word ‘yuet’ or moon in Mandarin (pic above). When it comes to word recognition, she hasn’t the slightest clue…. and the same goes for this yellow banana mummy.
Don’t you think that this book is a tad too tough for 3-year olds?
No. of times viewed = 372
my son only learn Mandarin & Malay this year (4 years old class). Is quite tough for a little kid learn this. So you plan to send her to Chinese school in primary?
Err… IMHO, a 3 or 4 year old shouldn’t even have homework/revision! Arts and craft is good but to learn writing when their hands aren’t strong enough to hold/grip the pencil yet is just torturing… Just my 2 cents though, coz personally I asked around and needed to be sure that Ivan attended a kindy which encourage growth in interaction, values and such rather than having homework, those will come in time… after all, they’re only 4…
argh… home work for 3 years old!! that really kill!!
I think it’s too difficult for a three year old.
homework at this age!! my gosh…
My girls only started writing proper chinese word when they are towards the end of N2. before that, they only learnt the stroke.
wah…those wordings at the bottom..quite tough 😐
ohno…3 years old!!! My girl is 3 years 3mths now and we will be in France for the next few years.. Education back home really stres me out. Guess I have to do coach her more in order for her to catch up when we go back to Singapore.
my girl has a book on mandarin too but so far, no writing requires. At the moment, she’s only learning the strokes and some chinese nursery rhymes. I think Sherilyn’s homework is a bit difficult for her age.
somehow, the education system in Malaysia is as such that homework will be a part of the child’s life. I noticed that Chinese based kindy does tend to give homeworks to kids from as young as 3! I was shocked too when Brendan had homework when he first attended preschool when he was 4!
The teaching scene has changed over the years. My boy came home with work to do too for 4 yrs old 🙂
whoa, i pity the kids nowadays, 3 yo oredi learning all this. what happened to good ol’ days of climbing rambutan trees, chasing each other, playing masak2.
parents are becoming more kiasu, everyone is being so competitive now, wanna be the best, the smartest, no 1 in class. adoi. kesian.
*wipe sweat* stressnya…
When my boys at their old nursery, on the last day, they bring back all the art work and writing at the nursery and together with a few new mandarin book, I got a shock! So young already got so hard mandarin book homework, but the teacher have yet to start the book, and now the nursery closed down already.
Nowadays syllabus quite tough leh
Do these teachers know that three-year olds do not have the fine motor skills, never mind the mental readiness for this kind of “revision”? It’s crazylah, seriously, even may be harmful in terms of emotional development because what the heck happens when the kids can’t do it? Do they kena scolding?
Wow, the kindy is really ‘hardworking’ ler…..Isaac totally has no homework at all, and so far, he so happy about it…..in his mind, he only thinking of eating eating food in school..ha,ha
pressure and stress for kids and parents too…so tough lah, 3 yrs old have to learn to write. *headache*
It really depends on the kindy – which method they follow. Some r really academic, like this 1 that ur girls attend. XY din hv homework when she was 4. Just a w/sheet to do that came with a story book once a wk. That oso started 2nd half of the yr, if I’m not mistaken.
I think learning should be fun, not like this. Kids should develop at their own pace . They should develop a love for learning in a fun environment. When learning is based on revision and homework like this, it kills all their enthusiasm and keeness for learning. Just my 2 sens.
shireen, qiqi is using the same book, only at age four.
Sue… everyone tells me that too.
Sharon… you’re right. Chinese based kindies are very homework oriented.
Jenn…. no, the kids dont get scoldings if they dont do homework. A few parents actually dont allow their kids to do homework. Those who dont do their homework will hv to finish them during class.
Mumsgather…. I think this kindy is too homework based but I hv little choice coz it’s the nearest to my house and I can even walk the gals to school coz sometimes hubby’s too bz to drive the gals to school.
Chin Nee… QQ’s preschool uses this book too?
