Mathematics For 5-Year Olds

Don’t you think this is a tad tough for a 5-year old (in Aly’s case, a 4-year old)?  Or is this the norm?  Alycia can only count and recognize numbers from 1 through 20+ but her pre-school is already teaching the 5-year olds in her class numbers up to 30. Alycia is the youngest in the class being a December child.

I don’t think Aly really comprehends what ‘comes between’ means.  So I think this exercise is really tough for her.

When I coached her in this exercise, I had to write down the numbers from 1 through 30 on a sheet of A4 paper and point out to her to show her where the correct numbers should be in the exercise.

Frankly, do you think this is tough or your 4-year old child already knows the whole concept of this exercise?  Looking at Alycia’s homework each day she brings them home  really scares me big time as I find them to be really tough for a 4 year old. Luckily I am a SAHM who can coach her.  If I were still working and leave her in the care of the sitter, I wonder who will coach her in her homework.  Gosh, I feel like one kiasu mum who is overly concern of her daughter!

Red Tag

Have been tagged by my good blogging pal on this red tag.   It’s not really a difficult tag but time consuming as I had to go through My Pictures folder to find a picture of myself wearing red.  After searching the entire pictures folder, these 2 are the only pix of me in red.

That’s me exercising on my fitball. I used to do this exercise every morning without fail for the past 2 years+ before this pregnancy to relieve my backache.

So, here’s what you have to do in this tag :

1. Post YOUR photo wearing red, may it be a red top, bottom, the least would be red accessories if you hate wearing red… If you can’t find one, you still have an option. Either post your Significant Other’s photo or your child’s photo, if you have one. Of course, they should be wearing red.

2. Let us know the reason why you were wearing red that particular day. Was it your birthday? Is red your fave color or was it the shirt that you first saw in your closet that day?

3. Tag 3 people close to your heart. By the way, they have to be in your blogroll. No cheating heart pleaseeeeeeee!

4. Once you’re tagged, could we please keep it going – just for this month?

END HERE.

I’d love to see you in red too :

A Jinxed Monday

Hubby had a meeting with his client in PJ this morning. On his way back to his office after the meeting, he met with a car accident. A man in another car, who despite saw hubby’s MPV coming, made a quick U-turn but stepped on his brake all of a sudden when he saw another on-coming car. Hubby could not brake on time and crashed onto the car. The front of hubby’s MPV was badly wrecked, so is the other party’s car. I must thank God that hubby was spared of injuries in the accident. If he were hurt in the accident, like how my brother was hurt in a nasty car accident 20 years ago, we would need to hire a good attorney, like the professional personal injury attorney Omaha based to help us with the accident compensation. I heard that the attorneys from Demerath Law Office in Omaha offer free consultation to their clients and will only charge them if they are successful in obtaining a recovery for their clients.

I hope hubby’s MPV will be fixed within 2 weeks, otherwise he will have to rent an MPV which will cost him a fortune.

Is This Too Tough For A 4-Year Old?

Frankly, do you think the word ‘xiao’ or smile in Mandarin is a tad too tough for a 4-year old to write? Though the meaning is straightforward, the word itself has so many strokes that even we adults find it difficult to remember to write, well at least for me, a yellow banana who speaks  smattering Mandarin and can only write my own Chinese name and a handful of Chinese words.

The Mandarin enrichment class teacher had expected her to know how to write this word and her homework was to write a page full of the word ‘xiao’. Even after I had dotted the lines for Alycia to trace the word, she could still not remember the correct order of the strokes.  She was merely tracing for the sake of completing her homework.

Now, I’m really worried how Alycia is going to catch up if I were to send her to a Chinese school in future.  I know nuts about Mandarin and I don’t want to lead her blindly, just as how I had led her blindly on the use of the abacus, coz we were never taught how to use the abacus during our time.  I guess I will have to send her for tuition in future.

I Wish Sherilyn Will Stop Puking

Sherilyn did it again last night.  This time, it wasn’t at the usual jinxed 12 midnight but at 10ish pm.  I had put the gals to bed early last night as they had taken their medicine and were feeling sleepy and listless, especially Alycia.   After putting them to sleep at 10pm, I went downstairs and sat in front of my computer.  Barely 2 minutes later, I heard Sherilyn coughing twice, followed by her shouting to me “mummy, I vomit“.  I hurried my maid who was downstairs to run upstairs but it was too late.  She had already puked on the bed and needless to say, it was a total mess and stink.   What I really hate most is the washing up part and I can only sympathize with my maid who has to mop the floor, wash away the stinky vomit on the bedsheet, pillow, blanket, pjs, etc. before soaking them in detergent….. all these done at an ungodly hour when she’s already so tired and sleepy after a hard day’s work.    After I had given Sherilyn a warm shower, I transferred the gals to my room where Alycia slept on the baby cot and Sherilyn slept with us on our king sized bed.   I am just so very very tired doing this almost every other night.  My tummy had been aching and not feeling too good yesterday.  I can also barely squat as my belly is terribly huge now.  Each time I squat down, I can feel my baby kicking me, as if telling me not to squeeze her so tightly.

I just wonder when Sherilyn will ever get over this vomiting phase.  I can’t imagine how exhausting it would be having to deal with this vomiting sessions after my 3rd baby arrives.   I think I will need to hire 2 maids to help me or send Sherilyn to stay with my mum.

Sherilyn sleeping with us on our king-sized bed after she had puked on her bed.  I had to place water-proof papers on our bed and plastic sheets under the bedsheet, just in case she pukes again.

Alycia slept on her old baby cot in our room.  She was wearing socks as I applied baby Vicks on the sole of her feet.

As for me, these days I have to sleep next to a bucket.  The moment I hear Sherilyn cough, I will jump up from bed and get the bucket ready.  Boy, I feel so sleepy and moody these days from the lack of sleep.

Abacus Calculation And Chinese School

Alycia’s pre-school is using the abacus method to teach the preschoolers Maths.  Her pre-school is gravitated towards Mandarin and most of the preschoolers there eventually go to a Chinese school.  Last week, Alycia brought home an abacus to be used for her Maths homework.   When I taught her to use the abacus, she appeared lost.  I had a tough time trying to teach her the concept of the abacus and calculations.   This week, she missed the entire week of school again due to her sickness.   If she continues to fall sick regularly, I am really worried she will have a tough time catching up.  As it is now, she is already very far lagging behind her peers as she had missed more than half a year of school last year.

Hubby is really adamant that Alycia has to go to a Chinese primary school in future.  He plans to register Alycia at Kuen Cheng 2 Primary school, despite the horrendous one-way traffic jam leading to the school.  I am really worried that Alycia would not be able to catch up with her studies and homework as Chinese schools are well-known for heavy load of homework.

For those of you who send your kids to a Chinese school, how is the workload like?  Is it true that kids who go to a Chinese school have very little time for play as they spend most of their time trying to finish off homework and attend tuitions?  If it is, that is really unhealthy for a kid. All work and no play can really bore a child to the core and create a feeling of hatred going to school in the child.  I really need some enlightment in this Chinese school thing.

Alycia’s First Ballet Class

Despite running a low grade fever, I still brought Alycia to her first ballet class yesterday.  Thank God, she did not puke or purge in class and was enjoying every moment of the 1-hour session.  While the teacher was teaching the kids dancing, Sherilyn and I watched them through the door outside the room.  I am really glad that Alycia paid full attention and followed her teacher in the steps.  It was really funny to see her dancing tip toed and swaying her arms up and down with the silk hanky like a little bird that’s hopping and flapping its wings.

The teacher helping Alycia put on her new ballet shoes.

Despite all the vomiting, purging and not eating much for 3 days, Alycia still looked chubby in her ballet costume.

On The Road To Recovery

Alycia and Sherilyn are on the road to recovery.  The fever is gone for both gals but they have now developed a cough, as expected.  Sherilyn has even developed a sexy, husky voice and almost lost her voice last night.   There seems to be a lot of phlegm in her throat too.   Though Alycia has stopped vomitting and purging today, she still lacks appetite to eat and feels sleepy all the time.  Tomorrow will be the last day of their course of antibiotics.  I shall start them again on probiotics on Saturday.

Since tomorrow is the last day of school before the school holidays, I am thinking of sending Alycia to school, so that she can bring home all the homework to do during the school holidays.  I hope she did not miss out much during the 4 days of absence from school as she had already missed out many months of classes last year and is still very much lagging behind her peers.

Sushi Sandwich

Since my 2 sick kittens do not have appetite to eat much, I decided to make them something different and appealing for lunch today.  I copied this from one of the Singaporean mummies’ blog.   It doesn’t take too much time and it’s really simple to prepare.  All you need to do is to buy a loaf of fresh bread,  fry 2 beaten up eggs, have some seaweeds, jam and cheese ready.  Rolling up and cutting up of the sushi sandwich only takes 10 minutes.

The top and bottom ones are egg and seaweed ‘sushi’.  It would taste better with some butter but since Alycia has a tummy discomfort and kept puking yesterday, I omitted the butter.

The ones in the middle are strawberry jam and cheese ‘sushi’.

Since I did this hurriedly (was rushing to grab an offer from this advertiser at 1pm), I did not do a good job rolling up the sushi and pressing the bread tightly.

Alycia and Sherilyn loved the sushi sandwiches to bits and gave their “ooohs and aahhs” and a big thumbs up!

Next time, I will try tuna sandwich sushi and chicken floss sandwich sushi.

As I was making this sushi sandwich, I was salivating away thinking of the gastronomical Japanese cuisine that we had last week.

What should I get myself for my birthday this year?  I haven’t been pampering myself with something that I really like and something that’s expensive for the longest time. Alycia Is Really Sick

Alycia is really sick and has been throwing up for the last 2 days.  Each time her temperature goes beyond 38.5 degrees Celcius, she will puke.  This afternoon just before lunch, she was playing with the maid and laughing away.  She laughed so hard that she puked…. and all that came out was phlegm, lots of them.  There wasn’t any food for her to puke as she had puked them all out after breakfast.  I held the plastic bag and sat waiting for her to puke for almost 15 minutes.  Poor Alycia was puking with so much might, pushing out the phlegm that after puking, her eyes were all red and there were tiny red blood spots all over her neck like this :

Last year, the same thing happened to her.  It was the first time I had seen such spots.  Even the paed at Pantai Medical Center, Bangsar was not sure what caused those spots. He suspected that the spots were due to an allergy to certain medication that he had prescribed her.  I was really worried that it was a symptom of Dengue fever as the spots remained on her body for more than 1 week.  A blood test was done to rule out Dengue fever and of course it wasn’t.  After that particular incident, each time she puked too hard, the spots would appear on her face and body.  Now, I know that the spots would habitually appear each time she pukes.

Hopefully Alycia would be feeling much better by tomorrow as she will be attending her first ballet class tomorrow evening.

Both The Girls Are Down

My worst nightmare came true last night.  Not only is Sherilyn having fever, Alycia who does not have a strong immune system also caught the bug and is having high fever (40 degrees Celcius), swollen throat and a runny nose.  She could not stomach any food this morning and threw up twice.  Sherilyn also has a very swollen throat with 2 white dots on her throat.  To add to my problem, my surge protector was struck by lightning yesterday evening.  I could not have access to internet and had to call the Streamyx technician to come and fix the problem.  Luckily I have the contact number of this technician whom, at just one call can come to fix my problem immediately.

I feel so exhausted and sleepy now.  I was up almost the whole night sponging the gals and giving them water.  I woke up at 6:30am this morning to check on my new maid and to instruct her to do things.  Don’t really have the mood to blog now.  It’s 5pm now and in just a moment, I have to teach my maid how to cook porridge and cook some simple dishes.   I will have another battle to confront later if the gals are still having high fever and need suppository .  It’s always a power struggle whenever it comes to inserting suppository for the gals.  Hubby will be super busy this week and will not be able to come home early to help me out.   When it rains, it really pours.  Sigh….. why do problems and challenges always come and greet us all at once and leave us with very little space to breath?

Sherilyn’s Turn To Fall Sick Now

I am feeling much better today – no more blocked nose, runny nose or sore throat, only a slight cough every now and then.  I think the barley water, crysanthemum tea, Manuka honey, lots of fruits and gargling of salt water throughout the day really helped.  Getting enough sleep also helps.  Now it’s Sherilyn’s turn to have runny nose and she has a body temperature of 38 degrees Celcius now.  I know her body is trying to fight off the virus now, thus the fever.   I hope she gets better tomorrow and I’m praying that Alycia won’t be the next to be down.   It would be really tough for me to handle 2 sick toddlers, having to train a new maid and feeling so heavy, sick and uncomfortable myself.
