The Overthinker’s Dilemma: A Blessing or a Curse?

I am an overthinker—sometimes even a chronic worrier. There are both pros and cons to this trait, and I’ve lived long enough to see how it has shaped my decisions, or in some cases, paralyzed them.

The Pros: Thinking Ahead & Avoiding Pitfalls

Being an overthinker means I am cautious. I like to plan ahead, assess all possible risks, and make sure that I’ve considered every angle before making a decision. This trait has saved me countless times from making mistakes, both small and costly.

Before committing to something, I naturally ask myself:

✅ What are the risks?

✅ What could go wrong?

✅ Is this the best decision in the long run?

This ability to foresee potential problems has helped me avoid bad financial decisions, risky ventures, and unnecessary headaches. In many ways, my overthinking has been a protective shield.

The Cons: The Paralysis of Overthinking

But here’s the downside—I often take too long to make decisions. Sometimes, I get so caught up in the “what ifs” that I end up doing nothing at all.

Many opportunities have slipped away because I was too busy overanalyzing every possible risk. Sometimes, even simple decisions become exhausting because my mind races through endless scenarios.

And here’s what makes it even more frustrating—my three daughters are not overthinkers. Fortunately for them… but unfortunately for me! 😂

Overthinker vs. Risk-Taker: Who Has It Better?

Unlike me, my daughters jump into things headfirst. They are not afraid to make decisions on the spot and learn as they go. They get to enjoy life more because they don’t let fear stop them from trying new things.

Last year, my eldest daughter booked a trip to Korea with her friend without consulting me and even overlooked buying travel insurance. Fortunately, I suddenly remembered about the insurance and helped her purchase it.

Of course, this means they also make plenty of mistakes—some of which are very costly. And guess who ends up paying for these mistakes? Their dad and I! 🙃

Honestly, if I had someone paying for all my expenses and costly mistakes, I think I would also take more risks and try more things in life! LOL!

Are You an Overthinker Too?

My lunch of Nutrislaw (coleslaw with white & red cabbage, carrot strips, celery and onions), cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, chick peas, siew yoke with crackling skin, and roast chicken breast.

My lunch of baby spinach, wild rocket (Arugula), tuna mayo with lots of raw shallots, and roast chicken breast.
